Die Aufgabe war, ein serielles Bildkonzept mit einer eigenständigen Gestaltungsidee zu entwickeln. Die Motive sollten sich als Fortsetzung über alle Katalogcover durchziehen. Wir danken dem Gewinner Alexander Kerski für seine gelungene Umsetzung. Schriftzeichen bilden die Grundlage seiner Gestaltung, bei der prozedural generierte Objekte aus Buchstaben, lebhafte und abstrakte Bildwelten schaffen. The images that adorn our catalog covers are the product of a design competition that is carried out each year by De Gruyter in cooperation with Lette Verein Berlin, a vocational training association. Participants in the competition were asked to create a series of interrelated images that are united by an overarching design concept. We would like to thank Alexander Kerski for his winning submission, which uses procedurally generated letter-based objects to create vibrant and abstract visual worlds.

This is the first complete translation of the poetry of Cao Zhi, a major figure from the formative age of classical Chinese poetry. The translations take the reader beyond anthology pieces to present a more complete view of the literary practices and concerns of Cao Zhi and his contemporaries. A number of works not previously available in English are included here, enhancing our understanding of the culture of China’s early medieval period.

This is a new, accurate translation into English, with critical introduction and notes and based on recent scholarship, of Yan Zhitui’s (531–590s) complete literary works, including his famous Family Instructions, his self-annotated poetic autobiography, a never-before-translated fragmented rhapsody questioning the phenomena of the natural world, and his extant poems. The appendix provides a translation of Yan’s biographies in dynastic histories.

This book focuses on the outbreaks of plague in the Byzantine Empire (330–1453 A.D.), as a historical and biological phenomenon. Being multifactorial, epidemics must be approached from various scientific disciplines, including epidemiology, microbiology, historical demography, and geography. The author illustrates the temporal relationship between humans, diseases, and environment in the Byzantine era on the basis of the epidemics of plague.

Homosexuals were mustered out of military service in the Bundeswehr until 1979, after which homosexuality alone was no longer considered grounds for unsuitability. But for homosexual soldiers, military service was an option, but a career was not – they were generally unable to progress to the rank of officer. Storkmann uses interviews, court files, and internal documents to examine the Bundeswehr’s approach toward homosexual soldiers.

The new towns of Bordeaux and Edinburgh were the two largest urban expansions in terms of area within Europe at the time of their development. Developing almost simultaneously between 1770 and 1830 as metropolitan residential districts, they spanned the transition from Early Modern urban planning to the urban development of bourgeois society. The author shows that the traditional attribution to Jacopo Bellini and the interpretation of the contents contingent on it have to be subjected to a revision. Based on new findings, the book of drawings actually belonged to Bellini’s son-in-law Andrea Mantegna, and his pupil, Francesco Squarcione, was responsible for creating them.
