Editorial

Designing cities to be more livable—that’s one of the key focuses of our publishing program. From Berlin, we look longingly to Paris, where policies promoting more greenery and fewer cars are setting a clear example. This spring, we turn our attention to the mobility transition with two important books: the new volume of the Mobility Design series is a practical handout for those seeking to intelligently connect public transportation with individual mobility, while Courage! calls for greater boldness in urban transportation planning and presents twelve European case studies, from the car-free city center of Ljubljana to the Piazze Aperte in Milan.

Livable cities also need good schools. But what defines a contemporary school? Neue Lernwelten offers essays and conversations that explore Austria’s educational landscape and present exemplary schools and kindergartens in our neighboring country. Wir bauen Bildung! takes stock of Germany’s largest educational building program, through which the City of Munich has completed more than 200 new construction and renovation projects over the past decade.

You can also immerse yourself in the work of both emerging and established architectural offices through our new monographs: Radically Local presents, for the first time, the projects of the optimistic and inventive French collective studiolada. An der Moderne kein Zweifel takes readers on a lively tour through the award-winning architecture of Ansgar and Benedikt Schulz. And the two volumes of the Uwe Schröder Werkverzeichnis comprehensively document the buildings, teaching, and writings of the influential Bonnbased architect. Finally, Stone Voids takes us beyond the European horizon to the groundbreaking work of Chinese architect Xu Tiantian and her remarkable revitalization of an abandoned quarry.

We hope you enjoy these and all our other new titles for Spring 2026!

Stone Voids

Xu Tiantian’s Reactivation of the Huangyan Quarries

arc en rêve centre d’architecture (ed.)

From cavernous quarries carved by centuries of stone extraction to vibrant public spaces, Stone Voids tells the story of how architect Xu Tiantian and her studio DnA_Design and Architecture transformed the Huangyan stone quarries in Taizhou, China. Through her “architectural acupuncture” approach, she has returned 20,000 square meters of disused industrial land to the community, blending precise, minimal interventions with a deep engagement in local culture and ecology. Essays, interviews, and striking visuals capture a project that reactivates a once-forgotten landscape, turning it into a place for gathering, memory, and renewal—offering a powerful model for reimagining industrial heritage worldwide.

Seeking Sustainable Tourism

Architecture, Culture, Community

Could tourism heal more than it harms? Seeking Sustainable Tourism brings together over forty artists, architects, community leaders, and tourism practitioners to find ways that travel might serve both people and planet. Born from PRAKSIS’s three-year project An Urgent Situation, this visually rich collection blends global perspectives with local case studies, offering context, methods, and visions for the future. The book examines the built environment as both a site of tension and a tool for transformation. Spanning diverse geographies and themes—from Indigenous rights in Sápmi, to cultural identity in Zambia, and community-led regeneration in Indonesia—it invites readers to rethink tourism as a space for care, creativity, and shared responsibility.

BOB CAMPUS – von der Magie des Gemeinsinns

Band 2

Montag Stiftung Urbane Räume (ed.)

Social cohesion requires trust, a sense of community, and tangible places. The BOB CAMPUS in Wuppertal is one such place—a social construct and a learning space, created and shaped collectively by many people. This book tells its story—personal, honest, and inspiring.

Following the first volume in the Gemeinwohl bauen series, which focused on the structural and spatial transformation of a former textile factory, this second volume explores the socially transformative potential of participatory and cooperative processes in the creation and appropriation of the site. Around thirty people—from the neighborhood, volunteer initiatives, non-profit and migrant self-organizations, the Montag Stiftung Urbane Räume, and the municipal administration—share their personal perspectives on the project, supplemented by expert insights from urban planning as well as the social and educational sciences. Their stories illustrate what it takes to spark—and continually nurture—the magic of community spirit within a neighborhood.

Courage! Transformation of Mobility Space

Process, actors, and design

Aglaée Degros / Martin Berger / Eva Schwab / Sabine Bauer / Jonathan Fetka / Dominik Hölzl / Barbara Russo (eds.)

Courage! is a call for greater boldness in mobility planning. The book outlines the steps toward successfully implementing the mobility transition and encourages decision-makers in politics, public administration, and urban as well as rural planning. Twelve European case studies illustrate the transformation of transport spaces into environments for active mobility, more greenery, and higher-quality public realms. The analyses of processes and projects cover the actors involved, the decisions they made, the obstacles they overcame, the time they needed to bring about change, and the design solutions that proved effective. Six in-depth essays provide concise yet in-depth insights into key issues shaping the discourse on the mobility transition.

Mobility Design

Shaping Future Mobility. Volume 3: Transfer

Heike Andersen / Hanna Bader / Andreas Blitz, Peter Eckart / Andreas Grzesiek / Amelie Ikas / Julian Schwarze / Anton Viehl / Kai Vöckler

How can the ongoing transformation of transportation succeed? With its focus on the environmental and societal sustainability of new planning measures, design research plays a central role in the development of sustainable mobility. The third volume of the Mobility Design series is a practice-oriented resource for communities, planners, mobility providers, and politicians. Developed through close collaboration between municipal authorities and mobility designers, these recommendations and examples demonstrate how cities can promote the potential of intermodal, environmentally friendly mobility. Their design principles, rigorously grounded in scientific knowledge and based on user needs, supply useful tools for those involved in the development of future-oriented mobility concepts.

Data-Spheres of Planetary Urbanization

Grga Bašić / Neil Brenner / Mariano Gomez-Luque / Nikos Katsikis

How can we map the urbanization of the planet in an era of climate breakdown? The Urban Theory Lab’s Data-Spheres of Planetary Urbanization confronts this question by assembling a series of experimental visualizations of the worldwide urban fabric. This book reverses the mainstream, city-centric perspective on urbanization, showing, instead, that the world of contemporary urbanization encompasses much of the planet, including apparently remote areas, wildlands, and oceans. Cities are not only producers of value, but also entropic black holes that consume surpluses produced elsewhere and project waste back into the planetary biosphere. Non-city spaces are, correspondingly, the metabolic bases of planetary urbanization.

Neue Lernwelten

Impulsgebende Schulen und Kindergärten in Österreich

ÖISS Österreichisches Institut für Schul- und Sportstättenbau (ed.)

Over the past fifteen years, Austria has seen the emergence of numerous educational buildings that provide fresh impulses for new learning environments beyond the traditional corridor school layout. This development is the result of joint efforts by stakeholders in pedagogy, architecture, and public administration to adapt learning spaces to contemporary educational approaches and to activate space as a “third teacher.” This book presents fifty outstanding examples and, through essays and conversations, reflects on the contexts and conditions of their creation. It is aimed in particular at educators and architects who seek to create better learning environments and are looking for a shared foundation to do so.

10 Jahre Bildungsbauoffensive München

Landeshauptstadt München, Baureferat (ed.)

Ten years ago, the Munich City Council launched Germany’s largest municipal school construction initiative. This book not only reflects on what has been achieved so far but also highlights the challenges and opportunities that still lie ahead for the Bavarian capital in developing a high-performing educational infrastructure. These challenges and opportunities serve as an example for other cities and municipalities as well. The accomplishments and qualities of this initiative are explored across five thematic clusters through introductory texts, interviews, illustrative infographics, and documentation of exemplary architectural projects. In doing so, the book brings central issues into focus: educational equity, forward-looking pedagogy, resource-conscious building, and interdisciplinary, cooperative action.

Radically Local studiolada

Based in Nancy in eastern France, studiolada is an architectural collective founded on values such as commitment to the common good, responsible use of resources, service to the public sector, collaborative dialogue, short supply chains, and circularity. These principles shape a collective practice deeply rooted in its local territory, drawing on its resources and dynamics.

Conceived and edited by architect and lecturer Mathias Rollot, Radically Local reflects on the collective’s philosophy while showcasing the wide range of work they have realized over time. It features an illustrated selection of thirty key projects, includes four exclusive interviews with studiolada members, and presents ten open contributions from external professionals and scholars, providing a rich diversity of perspectives on their practice and the ideas that inform it.

An der Moderne kein Zweifel

Die Essenz der Architektur von Schulz und Schulz

Falk Jaeger

Brothers Ansgar and Benedikt Schulz are among the most successful architects in Germany. Their designs are regarded as sophisticated, their constructions optimized and economical, their spatial concepts custom-made yet flexible. Their architecture is of timeless beauty and free of formal gimmickry, firmly rooted in the modernist tradition shaped by Mies van der Rohe.

What is the secret of this unpretentious, human-centered architecture? Architecture critic Falk Jaeger focuses on the ideas, architectural stance, and social positioning of the two architects, which he conveys to readers in pointed and engaging texts.

David Kasparek (ed.)

The architect, professor, and author Uwe Schröder has shaped the debate on fundamental themes of architecture—topology and typology, space and aesthetics—for more than three decades with his clear, uncompromising stance. These two beautifully crafted volumes present, for the first time, his award-winning oeuvre in its entirety: buildings and designs with numerous photographs and drawings, as well as the key texts Schröder has written over the years and his Raumentwurfslehre (theory of spatial design). The books open with essays by Bonn-based architecture journalist David Kasparek, who also compiled the complete chronology of Schröder’s work. When viewed together, a fascinating picture emerges of the reciprocal influences of building, thinking, and teaching—disciplines so often regarded as separate.

The Making of Alpine Architecture

Media, Awards, and Exhibitions in Vorarlberg and Grisons

What makes some regional architecture more famous than others? The Making of Alpine Architecture investigates the cultural construction behind contemporary Alpine architecture, exploring the events, publications, and buildings that have shaped architectural discourse on an international scale. With a particular focus on the Austrian Vorarlberg and the Swiss Grisons, the book examines the underlying dynamics and traces how shifts in architectural criticism from the late 1980s onward have fostered a new cultural image of the Alps. By weaving together historiography and detailed case studies, it reveals how strategic cultural interventions not only shaped regional identity but also influenced the quality and reception of architecture far beyond the mountains.

Synergies: Building Collaborations in Architectural Research

Architekturfakultät der Technischen Universität Graz (ed.) Guest editors: Urs Hirschberg / Milena Stavrić / Sophia Meeres

Architecture is, by definition, multidisciplinary—in design, in practice, and in research. However, genuine and productive collaboration across different disciplines is rarely a given. GAM 22 is dedicated to those synergies that succeed: when architects and material scientists explore new pathways toward carbon-neutral construction, when digital technologies, biological processes, or innovative recycling strategies become integral parts of architectural concepts, the result is more than the sum of individual contributions. GAM 22 brings together inspiring examples from research and practice that demonstrate how interdisciplinary collaboration can generate fresh impetus for our built environment. It is as a plea for the necessity of cooperation—and a volume full of hope at a time when it is urgently needed.

Von der Weltausstellung zur Bauausstellung

Regine Heß

The first German building exhibition took place in Dresden in 1900, establishing a curatorial practice that lives on today in the International Building Exhibitions (IBA), which continue to draw millions of visitors. Von der Weltausstellung zur Bauausstellung explores twenty international case studies—some of which have been researched for the first time—to trace the architectural history of major exhibitions that have left a lasting imprint on cities and regions. The author demonstrates how organizers appropriated the typologies of world, industrial, decorative arts, and colonial exhibitions, and how architecture, spatial design, and representation shaped and influenced each other. She follows the development from the Great Exhibition of 1851 to the Interbau of 1957, examining communication strategies, industrial prefabrication, urban planning and settlement concepts, as well as strategies of inclusion and exclusion.

Architecture for Warfare

How Corporations Profit From Destruction and Reconstruction

Some of the largest architecture firms have effectively become war corporations. At the same time as designing Olympic parks and world-famous buildings, they have constructed military bases, maintained weaponry, and trained personnel for wars in which hundreds of thousands of people have been killed. In some conflicts, the same firms have been contracted from invasion to reconstruction, including facilitating military attacks, rebuilding war-damaged infrastructure, and establishing new governments. Architecture for Warfare tells the story of a form of multidisciplinary corporation that employs architects skilled in designing structures alongside former military personnel with experience handling live-fire weapons. It highlights the tensions and contradictions within these architecture-led firms that claim to make the world a better place. The book combines personal narrative with detailed research to reveal unsettling relations between design, planning, and armed conflict.

Cinema and the City in the Age of Planetary Urbanization

Nitin Bathla / Silvia Cipelletti / Markus Lähteenmäki / Klearjos E. Papanicolaou

Amid deepening ecological and democratic crises, urban theory is changing fundamentally. Film and cinema—media historically intertwined with the city—have likewise undergone a profound transformation in their modes of representation and visual culture since the late 1980s. Today, filmmakers, photographers, and radical artists investigate the distant landscapes and territories of extended urbanization in all its forms. Films like Behemoth (Zhao Liang, 2015), Homo Urbanus (Ila Bêka & Louise Lemoine, 2017), and Leviathan (Lucien Castaing-Taylor & Véréna Paravel, 2012) exemplify this genre. But how do cinema and the city mutually shape each other? This book stages an encounter between film and the theory of planetary urbanization by deploying the notion of the Sensoriums of Planetary Urbanization. It offers a deep analysis of the multifaceted experiences of urban life—within and beyond the city.
