Dear readers, In our commitment to diversifying the path to Open Access, we are particularly pleased that we can continue the “OA-Transformationspaket germanistische Linguistik” initiative in 2024. With our new reference series “Handbooks of Germanic Linguistics” we have created an international forum that offers accessible and up-to-date information on dimensions of the Germanic languages from an empirical perspective. Further current research overviews can be found in the handbooks “Deutsch als Fach- und Fremdsprache”, “Sprache und digitale Kommunikation” as well as “Manual of Applied Romance Linguistics” and “A new companion to the Romance languages”. Eine empirische Untersuchung zur Kommasetzung beim Schreiben und Einsetzen

Die empirische Studie (N=657) vergleicht, wie Kommas beim Schreiben in eigene Texte integriert und wie sie in einen vorgegebenen Text eingesetzt werden. Daran zeigt die Arbeit, dass das Integrieren von Kommas in eigene Texte nur lose mit dem Einsetzen in fremde Texte zusammenhängt. Zudem bildet die Untersuchung in einer völlig neuen Tiefe ab, welche linguistischen Faktoren die Schwierigkeit eines Kommas für Schreiber/innen beeinflussen. This empirical study (N=657) compares how commas are integrated into a one’s own texts while writing and how they are inserted into a text written by someone else. The study reveals that integrating commas into one’s own texts only loosely corresponds to the insertion of commas into someone else’s texts. So-called determiner sharing poses problems for syntactic theory since it seems to be dependent on another ellipsis. It is shown that this apparent parasitism can be derived in movement-based approaches to ellipsis without any additional assumptions. The theoretical framework for the study of minoritized languages has been constructed from different areas of knowledge, creating a situation in which “language” is just one of the elements. This collection of essays proposes to recover the centrality of bilingualism, biculturalism and bidialectalism in the understanding of the different social, cultural and political processes of historical and contemporary language justice.

This volume provides a new set of methodological and theoretical approaches to the study of literary multilingualism in the age of national literature. Broader studies examine multilingual origins of seemingly monolingual national literatures. Case studies show that supposedly monolingual authors used multilingual techniques in their writing. The last part presents methods and theories to analyse multilingual texts within national literatures.

The study deals with petitions from the Esclavos series of the Ecuadorian National Archives from court cases of the Corte Suprema de Quito in the period 1702–1849, in which enslaved people were involved directly. The focus is on the study of argumentative strategies as discourse traditions: including topoi, linguistic means of constructing ethos and pathos, and linguistic marking of argumentative functions and structures.

Once again, Romanian sets itself apart from its sister languages, this time by the fact that it preserves and cultivates the Latin mihi est pattern, almost entirely replaced by a habeo pattern in the other Romance languages. In Romanian, the mihi est construction represents the most natural way of expressing psychological and physiological states and it occurs with a dative experiencer that behaves as the subject of the structure.

The aim of this volume is to grasp more completely the typological characteristics and the developmental potential of motion verbs and the constructions in which they occur in Romance languages. The contributions explore motion verbs and a wide array of single- and multi-verb constructions that have received scant attention thus far, taking into account not only grammaticalization processes but also discursive, lexical and pragmatic phenomena.

The book provides an overview of the evolution of phasal periphrases from Latin to Spanish, from the perspective of diachronic construction grammar, grammaticalization and discourse traditions. It also addresses the periphrastic character of phasal structures, as well as aspects that have been marginalized to date (chains of periphrases, possibility of double passivization or dialectal variation).

Zeitschrift für celtische Philologie (ZcP) was founded in 1897 by Kuno Meyer and Ludwig Christian Stern. It is thus the oldest significant journal of Celtic studies still in existence. In the early period, its focus was on Celtic (mainly Early Irish) philology and extant texts in Continental Celtic languages (mainly Gaulish). Later, these areas were extended to include modern Celtic languages and typological questions.
