Tiki Torch

This firecracker of a pony came in July 2023 with her buddies Red Rooster and Sweet Savannah. She’s currently hanging out with another senior pony, Blue Bell, and her goat sidekicks: Noah, Simon and Timothy. She seems to be in charge of both species in the paddock and they all respect that. Tiki recently started in a training program to work on her catchability and farrier manners. She’s like the ultimate Survivor as she thinks she can outwit, outlast and outplay the human that’s trying to catch her and she’s pretty good at it! She’s hid behind trees, goats and ducked under the goat playground to outplay the human. She may have been outwitted by the human because her stomach betrayed her and she became easily bribed by the draw of snacks. Of course that tactic draws the goats too which makes it a bit of a stampede for the human! Tiki may be a little silly looking with her llama like neck and her big bug eyes but we have a feeling that she’ll capture someone’s heart and she’ll find a great home where she can be the boss and feel like she is the ultimate Survivor!

“...she thinks she can outwit, outlast, and outplay the human that’s trying to catch her...”

Volunteer Spotlight Nancy Johns

How long have you volunteered with DEFHR? I believe it has been about 7 1/2 years now.

Page 07

Do you have a favorite DEFHR herd member, past or present? If so, who? I have had lots of favorite DEFHR herd members and might well give you different answers on different days. One of my favorites is Colton. He lives at DE2 right now. He is rather anxious but smart and very sweet! He likes sharing a field with mares who tell him what to do!

Did you have any previous equine experience(s) before volunteering with DEFHR? What was it? Not much: I took riding lessons when I was a kid and went on trail rides from time to time after that.

How did you initially find out about us? When I retired, I wanted to volunteer with animals. In a regular animal shelter, I feel SO sad and wish I could take every cat and dog home with me. I knew I couldn’t take a herd of horses home, and I’ve loved horses all my life, so I looked on the internet for local places where I could volunteer with horses. I happened to find DEFHR!

What's your favorite part of volunteering with DEFHR? I enjoy learning new tasks as a volunteer, and I love spending time with the horses, especially learning more about how to care for them, handle them, and communicate effectively with them.
