Looking Back at November A Special Thank You to our Holiday Volunteers!! The holiday season is always a reminder of just how lucky we are to have all of you! We appreciate all who helped with the horses on Thanksgiving. By taking time out of your holiday, you enabled the barn staff to have some extra time to enjoy theirs.

HORSE SPOTLIGHT

Gia

Gia is a 28 year old paso fino who came in as a BCS 1 out of Shenandoah County, Virginia in February of 2020. Gia had matching subsolar abscesses in the toe area of both of her hind feet, possibly chronic and untreated for a long time. The interns and barn staff packed her back feet every day for turnout for six weeks while she was in rehab to help her abscesses drain and her soles to firm up. Once Gia regained a healthy body condition, she showed us that she was a sweet, quiet mare and an excellent companion. In the years since she arrived, Gia has spent some time up at our second location, DE2. Gia gets ‘pulled out of retirement’ every now and then to aid in other horses rehabilitation and recovery process. Gia has been a transition buddy for multiple other horses working through rehab here, including Upendi and Savannah. She is the perfect companion for horses who are hurt physically and mentally, and her easy going attitude has helped other horses recover faster and with less stress. Gia is also safe to handle by almost everyone and she helps teach new volunteers how to lead, groom and pick up feet. Gia is perfect for the farrier every time, she is good for the vet and we even use her to teach interns how to do hoof wraps and standing bandages for the first time. She is truly a little black diamond in the rough. Page 05

Volunteer Spotlight Susan Holechek

How long have you volunteered with DEFHR? Like, 10 1/2 years.

Page 07

Do you have a favorite DEFHR herd member, past or present? If so, who? Definitely Eddie, but Atlas was my go-to boy before he passed. I groomed him every single week for months and months.

How did you initially find out about us? A niece of mine volunteered here, and I came out to check it out!

What's your favorite part of volunteering with DEFHR? Goodness - everything. I love giving tours, mucking, laundry. I pitch in to do whatever falls to the wayside, and I’ve made such amazing connections with so many people here!

Did you have any previous equine experience(s) before volunteering with DEFHR? What was it? I’ve been around horses since I was 3. I rode my first horse in Minnesota, where I was born. When we moved to South Dakota, my family owned 6 or 7 horses; I grew up with them.
