HORSE SPOTLIGHT

Fort Frederick
Fred was a neglect case from Cecil County in April 2023, he came in with Willoughby (adopted) and Venice (in training). It’s been fun getting to know Fred and finding out his different personality traits. He loves getting massaged on his withers and his shoulders, he will close his eyes and just melt into your hand! He loves the chiropractor and is going to need his own personal masseuse when he gets adopted! He also has a comedic streak in him…the other day he was getting a hair cut and the person was standing on a mounting block so they could reach his mane since he is so tall…he reached out and ‘gently’ pushed her with his nose right off of the mounting block and then pretended that he didn’t see a thing!
Under saddle he likes to wander around the arena and play with any obstacle or jump that is set up and bop it with his nose or push it over. His favorite thing to do is to stop and smell the flowers in the flower boxes.
It’s always cool watching horses blossom and change as they get more comfortable being around people and as they heal internally and externally. We can’t wait to see what’s next for this silly, handsome, tall gray Thoroughbred!

“His favorite thing to do is stop and smell the flowers in the flower boxes.”

Volunteer Spotlight
Greg Myers

How long have you volunteered with DEFHR?
Back in 2018, I think I got in around July.
Do you have a favorite DEFHR herd member, past or present? If so, who?
Eema, the 30-year old palomino mare. I was out by Mare Paddock feeding chute, and she came up and put her head over my shoulder. So I started scratching her. She inched up over the next few minutes until we were shoulder to shoulder and she leaned into me.
What's your favorite part of volunteering with DEFHR?
Helping anybody that needs help. And if nobody needs help, then I guess it’s mowing.
How did you initially find out about us?
Through Just Serve. All you do is put your area code in, and out pops all the volunteer opportunities near youhorses popped up, and I said “I can do horses!”
Did you have any previous equine experience(s) before volunteering with DEFHR?
What was it?
I grew up around horses. My mother told me stories of me being on horses before I can even remember. My nearest neighbor growing up was 1200 acres of pasture and cattle in Oregon, and everything was done with horses.

Our residential internship program is in need of a reliable used vehicle to support our interns as they travel between our facilities and the local community for essential tasks.

If you, or someone you know, has a car or truck they no longer need and would be willing to donate, it would be a tremendous help to our program and the dedicated interns who help us every day. Your generosity would directly support our mission and allow our interns to focus on their work with the horses.

Many employers offer matching funds and paid time off to volunteer and give back to the community? Corporations and businesses are getting on board with matching donation amounts for their employees. For example, you donate $10 each paycheck (via automatic payroll deduction) then your employer matches your amount to your chosen charity!! Your employer may also offer paid time off to volunteer with your co-workers. Businesses partnering with local non-profits is a great way to show their support and give back to their local communities. Plus, employee group volunteering serves as a team building experience.
MCCORMICK SPICE, UNITED HEALTH CARE, T. ROWE PRICE, HOME DEPOT, RAYTHEON, CLOROX, CONSTELLATION ENERGY AND CVS HEALTH ARE JUST A FEW OF THE MANY COMPANIES GIVING BACK THROUGH THEIR EMPLOYEES.
Check with your employer’s human resources department for the give back programs they offer or about starting one! For corporate/business group volunteer opportunities, please email welcome@defhr.org.
