HORSE SPOTLIGHT

Willoughby
Willoughby (aka Will or William) takes the spotlight in this month’s newsletter as a cute, compact chestnut gelding with a tiny star and the beginnings of a mustache on his soft snout. He is a striking copper color and he has a nice laidback vibe about him that has made him a favorite around the barn.
He got a great start in DEFHR’s training program with our very own Sandy Fain last summer when he spent a few months at the Spa with his buddy, Freddie. Sandy had him doing all sorts of cool things like trailer loading at a distance, with Sandy just asking him politely to load up!
Willoughby is currently in training with Sara and has been impressive with his lovely roundpen skills, and being very responsive and quick on his feet. His under saddle training has just begun, but we have a feeling once he gets going he will find a riding partner quickly!

...he has a nice laidback vibe...that has made him a favorite around the barn.”

Volunteer Spotlight

How long have you volunteered with DEFHR?
Since March 2010
Do you have a favorite DEFHR herd member, past or present? If so, who?
That's a tough question, but I think I'd have to say Ziporah. She was one of my foster horses.
Did you have any previous equine experience(s) before volunteering with DEFHR? What was it?
I've been horse-crazy since I was a little girl, but my parents didn't really have the means to give me a horse or riding lessons. I was lucky to have some friends with horses during my high school years, though, so I would ride their horses. The closest I came to having my own horse was leasing one for a year from a friend who had gone off to college. It was a dream come true for me.
How did you initially find out about us?
Somehow I knew of DEFHR's existence, but I can't remember how I knew!
What's your favorite part of volunteering with DEFHR?
My favorite part is meeting all the wonderful people I've met over the years - both DEFHR staff and volunteers. And fostering various horses for a few years was such a great experience too. I would borrow friends' teenage daughters to come foster with me, or do night feeds together, thereby providing some horse time to other young girls.
