HORSE SPOTLIGHT

Page 04

Jackpot

"Jack" is a grade gelding who is one cool dude. He has coasted through life on charm, and has no known prior training. Jack is healthy and comfortable, and is currently learning some new skills. Agility obstacles are his favorite as he is bold, curious, and loves a challenge.

Although gelded as adult, he has good ground manners and is a solid citizen. He’s a nice companion, easy to live with, and an easy keeper. He’d probably be quite happy just to hang out with you and your friends.

Jack is very green undersaddle with his aids and steering, but is very kind. His best fit for a home would be mainly as a field babysitter with an owner who also wanted to spend some time with him either on enriching groundwork or light flatwork. He really enjoys spending time with people. Jackpot, "Jack" is in off-site training with Equine Welfare Society located in Keswick, VA and available for adoption!!

“She loves basking in the sun during a grooming session!”

Volunteer Spotlight

Deryn Sirgo

Do you have a favorite DEFHR herd member, past or present? If so, who?

My favorite herd member is Rooster. He is a pony and he is a very sweet pony. Whenever I go to groom him he always neighs.

How did you initially find out about us?

My mom found it when she asked my school if there were any barns or places I could volunteer. I already ride and volunteer at another barn, but I wanted something I could do regularly. Rooster, Deryn’s favorite DEFHR horse.

Page 07

How long have you volunteered with DEFHR?

I have volunteered for almost a year. I started in October 2023 when I began middle school and was looking for a place earn SSL (student service learning) hours and knew for me, it had to be with horses!

What's your favorite part of volunteering with DEFHR?

My favorite part is when I get to go and help make the feed. I like that I get to see which horse gets which type of feed and that helps make sure the horses get exactly what they need to be healthy.

Did you have any previous equine experience(s) before volunteering with DEFHR? What was it?

I started riding horses in 2020, during the pandemic. I became better and better at riding, and now I am on a show team for the International Equestrian Association (IEA) at another barn. I also have always loved horse care and enjoy taking care of horses, grooming them and feeding them. I was volunteering at the barn I initially learned to ride at, and also at the barn I train at year round, but neither of them had SSL hours and I wanted something I could do more often.

Many employers offer matching funds and paid time off to volunteer and give back to the community? Corporations and businesses are getting on board with matching donation amounts for their employees. For example, you donate $10 each paycheck (via automatic payroll deduction) then your employer matches your amount to your chosen charity!! Your employer may also offer paid time off to volunteer with your co-workers. Businesses partnering with local non-profits is a great way to show their support and give back to their local communities. Plus, employee group volunteering serves as a team building experience.

MCCORMICK SPICE, UNITED HEALTH CARE, T. ROWE PRICE, HOME DEPOT, RAYTHEON, CLOROX, CONSTELLATION

ENERGY AND CVS HEALTH ARE JUST A FEW OF THE MANY COMPANIES GIVING BACK THROUGH THEIR EMPLOYEES.

Check with your employer’s human resources department for the give back programs they offer or about starting one! For corporate/business group volunteer opportunities, please email Carrie at welcome@defhr.org.
