We’ve officially kicked off Legacy season for 2024 with campers who are eager to come out to the farm and learn more about DEFHR, volunteer, and have a great time!
The neglect charges were dropped. (Winnifred, Xackery, Yara, Zafrina, Auntie Ann, Billy Bob, Colton's Creed) 13 charges of failure to provide. The trial is set for November. (Gallant, Hobbit, Iffy, Jackpot, Khaleesi, Letty, Mochi, Nifty, Offelia, Poppy Seed, Qelty, Rosa, Scooter)
A Comment About the Cabell County Outcome from DeEtte Hillman, Equine Programs Director @DEFHR:
Active Investigation & probate. Charges are pending.
(Ipsy, Julius, Kelpie, Lennox, Moose, Nicolette, Odessa, Penny, Queen, Ronald)
In late May DEFHR was informed by the State of West Virginia that the charges against the owners of the Cabell County horses had been dropped and that the horses were to be returned. Though this outcome was unexpected, it is a possibility in any criminal case that DEFHR supports. We understand and deeply appreciate the impact this decision has had on our staff, fosters, and volunteers. We remain resolved to support the needs of West Virginia’s law enforcement agencies and the horses they are committed to helping. Thank you to our volunteers for your ongoing support of this mission and our staff.
A favorite of Barn Staff Colleen, Bing Bang Boomer is a newer addition to DEFHR who came in as a stallion. He has since been gelded, and has been very excited to be out with the rest of the geldings in G2! He loves to make friends, and thinks that everyone is meant to be his buddy, whether they think so or not.
He is a favorite among volunteers now that he gets to receive their love and attention, and will do just about anything for a scratch session, which are reportedly his favorite part of being groomed. He’s progressing quickly, and it won’t be long before he enters the adoption program. We’re sure that it won’t take long for him to win someone’s heart with how sweet he is!
“Make sure to stop by and ask Staff Colleen all about her favorite boy, Boomer!”

Do you have a favorite DEFHR herd member, past or present? If so, who? Barney, yeah. To me he was different from the rest of the herd, and he was always accommodating for grooming.
did you initially find out about us?
I’ve known about Days End for 40 years, because I’ve lived in the neighborhood and my son was a volunteer when he was a teenager (early 1990s). Subsequently, I came to the Fall Festivals.
How long have you volunteered with DEFHR?
I think it was post-pandemic. I tried before, and I know I applied to volunteer pre-pandemic, but I can’t remember when I started volunteering. It hasn’t been more than 4 years.
What's your favorite part of volunteering with DEFHR?
For me, it’s the connection with people and outdoors. I really love the FOT crew, past and present, and I really enjoy being able to work outdoors.
All the staff, really. I enjoy all the staff at DEFHR, it’s an amazing group of people.
Did you have any previous equine experience(s) before volunteering with DEFHR? What was it? No.

Many employers offer matching funds and paid time off to volunteer and give back to the community? Corporations and businesses are getting on board with matching donation amounts for their employees. For example, you donate $10 each paycheck (via automatic payroll deduction) then your employer matches your amount to your chosen charity!! Your employer may also offer paid time off to volunteer with your co-workers. Businesses partnering with local non-profits is a great way to show their support and give back to their local communities. Plus, employee group volunteering serves as a team building experience.
MCCORMICK SPICE, UNITED HEALTH CARE, T. ROWE PRICE, HOME DEPOT, RAYTHEON, CLOROX, CONSTELLATION
ENERGY AND CVS HEALTH ARE JUST A FEW OF THE MANY COMPANIES GIVING BACK THROUGH THEIR EMPLOYEES.
Check with your employer’s human resources department for the give back programs they offer or about starting one! For corporate/business group volunteer opportunities, please email Carrie at welcome@defhr.org.
