HORSE SPOTLIGHT
Madame Merlot
Meet Madame Merlot, a 2013 Thoroughbred mare standing 16 hands tall and ready to find her perfect person. With her balance of energy, neither hot nor dull-Merlot brings just the right amount of personality to keep things fun and engaging. She’s proven to be a quick learner in her in-hand agility training and is polite and easy to handle in daily routines. This beautiful mare enjoys spending time with people, but is equally happy to unwind in her stall or out in the field. Adaptable, clever, and charming, Merlot would make a wonderful companion and partner for so appreciates all of the great qualities of a Merlot is currently enjoying some spa treatment with DEFHR’s own volunteer, Sandy, with another DEFHR horse, Dorothy. She’s receiving some one-on-one time with Sandy, going over the lessons that she learned during her time with Equine Welfare Society last year. The last report we got from Sandy was that she is a delight to work with and has been eager and responsive in the work!

19 New Horses!
Did you know that every horse who comes into our care spends their first 2 weeks in quarantine? We want to make sure no one has anything contagious! We have special quarantine protocols and safety measures required for anyone who enters a quarantine zone.
SO MUCH to all our volunteers who have worked extra hard to take care of our horses in quarantine this month. We are currently at 79 horses total!

Our summer interns have officially arrived and you’ll see them around the farm until August 15th. Let’s give them a DEFHR welcome! We may even have some f Equine Vets in this group!

Internships at DEFHR give emerging professionals valuable insight into the day-today management, operations, and requirements of a large horse rescue. Interns can utilize their unique skills learned at DEFHR in their next careers in the equine industry.

650 SSL Hours!
We are so proud of Volunteer Zoe who will graduate 8t grade this June with 650 “Student Service Learning” hours- about 500 of those hours were earned here at DEFHR. Whether she is making feed, mucking stalls or recruiting her entire family to volunteer, she is always a joy to see on the farm. Congrats Zoe!

Volunteer Groups
Did you know we host different types of groups for “volunteer days” here at the farm? From Scouts to Seniors to Corporate Companies, we welcome all types to come for a day of service.
Leading a group entails giving a brief tour of the property, setting them up with an assigned farm project, and giving a horse ‘meet and greet’ opportunity at the end.
