By Max Edison Defender For the first time in 42 years, you can now use the word champion and TSU football in the same sentence. Led by Division IAA’s #1 rated defense, a tremendous running attack, and the poise of a back-up quarterback, the Texas Southern University Tigers defeated Alabama State and were crowned Kings of the SWAC football conference. The game’s final score, 11-6 was not indicative of the Tigers total domination of the ASU Hornets. Consider this: offensively the Hornets finished the game with 72 yards of total offense, 36 of those in the first half, for an average of 1.7 yards per play! For former TSU QB and current head coach Johnnie Cole, the victory could not have been sweeter. “This is the biggest win in school history since 1952, we wonTate the national title,” Cole proclaimed. “This By when ReShonda Billingsley is what it’sDEFENDER all about.” Of course, it wouldn’t be the Tigers if they didn’t have to overcome an obstacle orhas twocome alongup the way and exas Southern University’s president this contest waswill no different.
