Calls intensify for party leader to step down Defender News Services

Some of Texas' top Republicans are urging a county party leader to step down after the revelation that she sent a text that included a racist slur. Galveston County Republican Party Chairwoman Yolanda Waters is now facing pressure from Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, Texas GOP Party Chairman James Dickey and Land Commissioner George P. Bush. It was the latest example of statewide Republicans moving quickly to denounce racism in their own ranks after a firestorm involving a state representative complaining about his "Asian" primary challengers. The Galveston County situation centers on a monthsold text exchange in which Waters complained to another person about her local State Republican Executive Committee member, J.T. Edwards, who is Black. In the texts, she Yolanda Waters referred to him as a "Typical Nig." Waters told the newspaper she made an "unfortunate typo" but did not elaborate on what she had meant instead, saying she could not remember. She apologized in a Facebook post to "anyone who took my typo in offense" and said she intends "to keep my position in the upcoming election." "I am saddened and hurt that anyone believes I am 'racist' against my own people," said Waters, who identifies as "Latina/ African-American." Dickey said in a statement that the Texas GOP "does not tolerate racist remarks and actions," adding that he has asked her to resign. Abbott spokesman John Wittman called Waters' text "abhorrent" and said the language has "no place in the Republican Party." After the Galveston Daily News broke the story, Bush tweeted that Waters should apologize and resign. Sixteen Galveston County precinct chairs have also signed on to a statement calling for her immediate resignation.

Lone Star College to offer bachelor’s degrees Defender News Services

Lone Star College has received approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to begin offering bachelor’s degree programs. LSC students will be able to earn the following bachelor’s degrees beginning in fall 2020: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN); Bachelor of Applied Technology in Cybersecurity (BAT); and Bachelor of Applied Science in Energy, Manufacturing and Trades Management (BAS-EMTM).

The approval from SACSCOC, the higher education accreditation agency for the southeastern United States, makes Lone Star College the first community college in Texas to roll out three bachelor’s degree programs. “This is a significant milestone for Lone Star College,” said Stephen C. Head, Ph.D., LSC chancellor. “This approval allows Lone Star College to expand its commitment to providing high-quality academic and workforce programs in response to our area employers’ needs.” The BSN degree is designed for licensed

Voting rights measures restored NNPA Newswire

More than four years after sections of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 were taken out by the Supreme Court and following four attempts under a House led by Republicans, Rep. Terri Sewell’s (R-Ala.) bill to reinstate voting protections has finally passed. “Voting is personal to me because it was on the streets of my hometown, Selma, that foot soldiers shed their blood on the Edmund Pettus Bride so that all Americans – regardless of race – could vote,” Sewell, who is African American, wrote on Twitter. “I am so proud the House voted to #RestoreTheVote,” she added. The measure, H.R. 4, passed by a 228-187 margin, with all Democrats voting in favor while Sewell and Pennsylvania Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick were the only Republicans to support the legislation. Many are now calling on the Senate to take up the measure. Rev. Dr. William Barber, the president and senior lecturer of Repairers of the Breach and the architect of the Moral Mondays Movement in North Carolina, is among those calling out Senate leaders. “The U.S. House passed legislation to restore the Voting Rights Act,” Barber said. “If [GOP Senate Majority Leader] Mitch McConnell refuses to take it up in the Senate, he’s confessing that he believes the GOP can’t win without voter suppression.”

Gerrymandering, unfair voter I.D. laws, and intimidation at the polls are among the tactics being used to prevent voters of color from casting votes, said Marcela Howell, the founder and president of In Our Own Voice: National Black Women’s Reproductive Justice Agenda. “Passage of the Voting Rights Advancement Act by the House is a first step toward restoring our democracy. We applaud the House of Representatives for passing the Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2019,” Howell said. “The wholesale disenfranchisement of voters threatens our democracy. Conservative lawmakers across the country are pulling out all the stops to prevent people of color – especially Black people – from exercising our right to vote.” Sewell’s bill initially would cover 11 states, including nine in the South, and also California and New York. The bill would require all states to get federal approval for election changes known to disproportionately affect voters of color, like strict voter I.D. laws, tighter voter registration requirements, and polling place closures in areas with large numbers of minority voters. The Voting Rights Act is perhaps the most significant piece of civil rights legislation in U.S. history, said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Knowles will be honored at a special event, which will be held at the Town Hall in New York City on Feb. 28, 2020, during which she will receive $100,000, which will be directed to Project Row Houses, a Houston-based nonprofit dedicated to empowering people and enriching communities through engagement, art and direct action. South Africa’s Zozibini Tunzi has been crowned Miss Universe 2019. The 26-year-old beauty queen beat out 89 other contestants during the pageant held in Atlanta. She excelled through rounds of swimsuit and evening gown struts, questions on social issues and one final chance to explain why she was the right choice. "I grew up in a world where a woman who looks like me – with my kind of skin and my kind of hair – was never considered to be beautiful," she said in her last response. "I think it is time that that stops today. I want children to look at me and see my face and I want them to see their faces reflected in mine." Members of the Ocean of Soul drumline, “The Funk Train,” opened for Houston hip-hop artist Megan Thee Stallion at her recent performance at White Oak Music Hall. The evening’s line-up was truly allTexas Southern University, as both Megan Thee Stallion and members of the Ocean’s drumline are students at TSU. Students in the band, which is comprised of the drumline and tubas, conducted a 15-minute set before the artist came out to perform. Interim Director of Bands Darryl Singleton said the band was contacted by Red Bull, which sponsored the performance. “They were looking to have a different type of group open up for Megan Thee Stallion,” said Singleton, “Someone mentioned drumline and they thought of us, called us up and made it happen.” “It only made sense that we bring tubas and drums,” said Mario Ramirez, a junior Music Education major from Corpus Christi. A third-year member of the

Ocean of Soul, he hopes the performance brings more attention to what the Music Department at TSU has to offer. “I think this performance is a great catalyst of what to expect from the music programs at TSU,” he said. Ramirez was also excited to perform on the same stage as a fellow student, “It’s really cool to perform for [Megan].” Jesse Holloway is a junior Music Education major from Houston who serves as the drum section leader. He said they often participate in gigs to help raise funds for the band, but the most recent performance was special. “It’s cool to be doing something with her,” said Holloway, “She is a part of us.” With the artist being closer in age to the students, they said they felt more of a connection. “It means a lot and is a really cool opportunity,” said Holloway. “This is probably one of the coolest gigs we’ve done.” Megan Thee Stallion is pursuing a degree in Health Administration at TSU. Her performance coincided with the announcement that she was named to Forbes “30 Under 30” Music Class of 2020 list.

When you factor in overspending on presents, pressure from kids and other loved ones, prolonged and close proximity to difficult family members and loneliness, your stress levels can skyrocket. In fact, according to a survey by Healthline, 62% of people said their stress level increases during the holiday season. The more strain you put on yourself, your family and your finances, the more likely you are to miss the magic of the season. However, you can make this holiday season stress-free with these 10 tips.

Make a to-do list. There’s a reason the experts say to write things down. It gives you a roadmap of what needs to be completed to reach your goal – in this case, a stressfree holiday. A written list helps you see big picture. If your shopping needs to be done by a certain date, write that down. If your neighbors have a yearly bash on the second Saturday in December, write that down. The point of this is to see everything in one place so you can get an idea of what’s happening and when.

Set (and stick to) a sensible budget. It’s easy to break the bank at Christmastime, especially when it comes to gift-giving. Try curbing gift expectations with your family. Don’t stress about the perfect gift. Avoid that extra stress of anticipating whether they will/won’t like your gift and buy a gift card Avoid all the impulse spending, and when you max out your budget, that’s it. You’re done. Be sure to include all the parties you want to go to and the cost of gifts, food and decorations in your budget. Despite all of the holiday hoopla, stick to your plan no matter what.

Avoid too many commitments. Most likely, your December schedule is sure to include parties. But you don’t have to do everything on your calendar. You are in control. Remember, you can’t be everywhere at the same time. You can only attend so many family dinners, drive so far, and give so much. Just like your money, you have limits with your time. Be honest and reasonable about what you can handle, and speak up if it’s too much to juggle. Prioritize your family’s time and only commit to what you want to do. It’s all about quality, not quantity.

Don’t procrastinate. Delaying something until the last minute is rarely a good idea. Christmas shopping is the perfect example of that. A lot of people wait until halfway through December and then dash to the malls in a panic to buy gifts. If you’ve waited, try online shopping and cut out the stress of the malls. Go ahead and make your menu and start stocking up on items so you’re not stressing in the grocery store on Christmas Eve.

So get rid of the clutter before Christmas gets here. For every new toy that you know the kids will open on Christmas morning, get rid of two. Make your kids a part of it so they know they’re donating their well-loved toys to others. This is also a great time to sort through and organize your clothes, garage and kitchen.

Do something different this year. Don’t be afraid to start a new tradition. Perhaps change the venue of your Christmas or New Year’s party or dinner, or make it a holiday full of activities such as walking. Rather than slaving over the usual cooked lunch, have a “free for all” whereby everyone can have their favorite food. Allow anything as long as it is quick, easy and they can prepare or cook it themselves.

Spend quality time with your significant other. Plan your time off from housework and other chores as if you were both still at work on your normal jobs. This is a time to relax and focus on what matters most – family and loved ones.

e all know that the holiday season can be stressful and chaotic. There are get-togethers to be planned, gifts to be purchased and wrapped, kids to be entertained, cooking and baking to be done, and holiday décor to be put into place. Sleep is so crucial that even slight sleep deprivation or poor sleep can affect memory, judgment, and mood.

Sleep affects your health

The occasional night of poor sleep isn’t likely to cause harm, but persistent sleep deprivation may increase the risk of several chronic health conditions. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), people who get less than seven hours of sleep per night have an increased risk of the following conditions:

Not getting enough sleep may cause lifestyle difficulties, such as slow reaction time while driving a car and inefficiency at work. It can also lower your body’s immune resistance, leaving you vulnerable to illnesses you might have otherwise resisted. A consistently late bedtime isn’t the only cause of sleep deprivation. Other factors include emotional stress, poor diet, excessive alcohol or caffeine consumption, and physical problems such as sleep apnea.

Tips for getting the rest you need

The following tips can help you get the rest you need during the holidays and throughout the coming year: • Stay on schedule. No magic involved here – just consistency. Your body loves a regular sleep routine. Go to bed and get up at the same time every day, including weekends. • Dress for sleep. Put on whatever’s loose

and comfortable, but don’t layer it on – body temperature rises during the night. Don’t put exercise on hold. Exercise can help you fall asleep more quickly and improves sleep quality. However, strenuous physical activity done too close to bedtime may make you feel wired. Have your workouts completed two to three hours before bedtime. Don’t go to bed hungry or stuffed. Avoid heavy or large meals close to bedtime or your discomfort might keep you up. Don’t get buzzed. Avoid caffeine and alcoholic beverages four to six hours before bedtime. Better still, if you’re having trouble sleeping, cut caffeine out of your life altogether. Set the stage for sleep. Eliminate bedroom lights, noise, and clutter. Turn down the thermostat to a comfortable temperature. Turn off the television, computers, cell phones, e-readers, portable game systems, and other electronic devices that emit a light that can disrupt sleep.

Survey shows who faces the most bias in U.S. Defender News Services

In recent years, U.S. public opinion has been divided about the existence and seriousness of racism, sexism and other forms of discrimination. Amid growing racial divides in civil and political views, a research team at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, in partnership with NPR and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, asked 3,453 adults about their experiences of discrimination. The team surveyed adults who identified as members of six groups often underrepresented in public opinion research: Blacks, Latinos, Native Americans, Asian Americans, women and LGBTQ adults. The studies show that people from these groups report high levels of discrimination from both institutions and other people. The articles were based on a survey conducted via telephone in 2017 among a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults. Discrimination was commonly reported across many areas of life, including in the workplace, in health care and with law enforcement. Slurs, harassment and violence were also widely reported. Half of Black adults said they have personally experienced racial discrimination when interacting with the police, while 22% avoided seeking health care for themselves or family members due to anticipated discrimination. Nearly 4 in 10 Native Americans said they or family members have experienced racial violence. One in three Latinos said they have experienced discrimination when applying

for jobs. One in four Asian Americans said they have been discriminated against when trying to obtain housing. Among women, more than four in 10 said they experienced gender discrimination in the workplace when it comes to getting equal pay or promotions. A majority of LGBTQ adults said they or LGBTQ friends or family members have been threatened or harassed. Polling has documented large gaps between whites and minorities over their general beliefs about racial and ethnic discrimination in America. There are similar divisions in beliefs about whether discrimination exists against women and LGBTQ adults. For example, 52% of the public does not believe there is a lot of discrimination against women in the United States today, while 45% does. The survey findings showed that, despite divided public perceptions to the contrary, reported discrimination against Blacks, Latinos, Asian Americans, Native Americans, women and LGBTQ adults is prevalent in the U.S. today. The survey’s authors said greater public policy efforts are needed to help end the common discriminatory behaviors in day-to-day life, as well as in institutions and policies. “Working to end discrimination presents a challenge for leaders at all levels,” the authors said. “Leaders of institutions can both act and educate at the institutional level, not only about the existence and pervasive nature of discrimination, but also about its impacts on the country, communities, individuals and their families.”

Hair dye, perms increase breast cancer risk Defender News Services

A relaxer here and a root touch-up there. Common hair products can do a number on one’s hair, but how does it affect your overall health? A newly released study suggests some products could be more dangerous than others. The report by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences suggests that women who use hair dyes and chemical straighteners are at increased risk of developing breast cancer over those who don’t. Analyzing data from an ongoing study of 46,709 women who had a sibling diagnosed with breast cancer, researchers found that those who routinely used permanent hair dye were 9 percent more likely to develop the disease. The hazard was much higher for African American women. Among Black woman who used permanent dyes every five to eight weeks researchers saw a 60 percent increased risk of breast cancer, compared to the 8 percent in their white peers. The team found no significant increase in risk associated with semi-

permanent or temporary dye use. Over the years, similar studies have explored the link between hair dyes, chemical straighteners and cancer. However, the results have been inconsistent. “We are exposed to many things that could potentially contribute to breast cancer, and it is

unlikely that any single factor explains a woman’s risk,” co-author and chief of NIEHS Epidemiology Branch Dale Sandler said in a statement. “While it’s too early to make a firm recommendation, avoiding these chemicals might be one more thing women can do to reduce their risk of

For the report, researchers used data from a study called the Sister Study, which examines medical records and lifestyle surveys from over 46,000 women between the ages of 34 and 74 who had a sister affected by the life-threatening disease. The survey also asked the women about their use of hair dyes and straighteners. Though the cancer risk with straighteners didn’t vary by race, about 75 percent of Black women surveyed in the study reported straightening or relaxing their hair. “For the chemical straighteners, one of the big concerns is formaldehyde, which is a known carcinogen,” said study author and epidemiologist Alexandra White. Still, questions remain about the suggested links. Researchers are unsure which ingredients in the products could be harmful, as the study didn’t identify exactly what type of hair dye the women used or the specific ingredients. It only looked at whether they used the products and if they developed breast cancer. Dr. Megan Kruse, a Cleveland Clinic breast cancer medical oncologist who wasn’t associated with the study, pointed out that many of the women surveyed were already pre-disposed to breast cancer because they had a family member who had it.

eteran swingman Ben McLemore has been a little all over the place in his first couple of months playing with

the Rockets. Such can be the case when you are new to an established team that is poised to win now and it’s up to you to blend your game with a couple of superstars like James Harden and Russell Westbook while struggling with your own role. But McLemore finally seems to be finding his groove with the Rockets – whether in the starting lineup or coming off the bench. “It’s about being confident, going out there and playing the game that I love,” McLemore said. “Over the past games my teammates and coaches are doing a good job of building that confidence within me to continue shooting and to keep playing hard and being aggressive.” The Rockets brought in the free agent, who was the seventh pick of the Sacramento Kings out of Kansas during the 2013 NBA Draft, this summer because of his athleticism, defense and ability to knock down the open jumper and there would be plenty of open looks with so much attention going to Harden and Westbrook. It wasn’t quite that simple from the start. That seemed to change during the Nov. 30 against Atlanta when McLemore scored 24 points and then two games later he contributed a season-high 28 points as starter in place of Danuel House Jr. McLemore saved his best of the season for the Dec. 7 game against Phoenix when he scored 27 off the bench on an efficient 10-of-15 shooting from the floor, giving him a stretch where

he scored 20-plus points in three games. “It’s about staying ready, staying locked in and doing everything I need to do at both ends of the floor and just trying to help my teammates the best way that I can,” McLemore said. His teammates can see the strides made by McLeore as he becomes more comfortable. “He is doing good,” Westbrook said. “He is finding his way, finding ways to be more comfortable, being efficient and playing his game. That’s it.” Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni anticipated that it might take McLemore some time to adjust and become more comfortable but he was confident the 6-foot-3 guard’s skill set would eventually show. McLemore was waived by the Kings last February and had not played with any NBA team prior to the Rockets signing him in July to fill a critical role as a depth player. “We always thought he was going to play well,” D’Antoni said. “He is too coachable and plays too hard not to play well. [And] he plays good defense. So, it’s just a matter of shooting and if you watch him shoot he has great form…If you just stick with it and stick with him eventually it’s going to come around and so far it has.” McLemore, who is averaging 10 point and 2.4 rebounds while shooting 41 percent from the field and 35 percent form 3-point range, is enjoying the ride and getting more comfortable in his new surroundings with the Rockets. “It’s been great. I’m happy and thrilled to be here and be a part of the Houston Rockets,” he said. “I’m excited with the journey that I’m headed to with the Rockets. his time last year, three Houston teams went to state, yet only one of them reached the mountaintop of Texas championship glory. Today, H-Town is one game away from having four area teams headed to the state semifinal rounds kick-off. Here are the final four teams still alive in the chase for a UIL state championship.

Notes: North Shore is on a mission to repeat state championship of seasons past with a big, strong and battle-tested offensive scheme that routed through Katy and Atascocita in the playoffs. All signs show North Shore will face off with Dallas powerhouse and No. 1-ranked team in the state, Duncanville, in a rematch for the Class 6A Division 1 State title. Their best wide receiver, junior Shadrach Banks, will likely be out or play injured throughout the remainder of the playoffs. If the offense can keep Westfield in games like they did in the state quarterfinals against Dallas Jesuit, Westfield could shock the local football world and walk away with a state title. Conference: Class 5A Division 1 Overall record: 14-0 Key losses: None Quality wins: Put the smack-down on Hightower 53-9, defeated Foster in regular season and playoffs, beat Hutto 63-24 in regional playoffs. Notes: Since the Sharks took their only loss in three seasons at the 2018-19 state championship in their team debut in Class 5A last season, Shadow Creek has been nothing short of exceptional. Throughout their 14-game win streak they have dominated both sides of the line of scrimmage with little or no margin of error. It is rumored the team will most likely move up to Class 6A sooner than later. The primary concern is the injury to safety Xavion Alford, their best player according to recruiting sites. Fort Bend Marshall
