When I heard the news about the killing of Memphis rapper Young Dolph all I could think about were the other promising rap artists who died senselessly to gun violence.

Young Dolph was killed in a shooting near a popular bakery in Memphis after stepping out of his vehicle to buy some cookies. According to his lawyer, before he was killed, he was in the city for his annual Thanksgiving giveaway. He was on his way to the event to hand out turkeys when he was stopped at the bakery and was fatally shot. In his hometown.

DN News EPA administrator comes to Houston, visits TSU, Kashmere Gardens , 5th Ward

Michael S. Regan, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is on a mission to bring an end to environmental racism. To that end, he is touring the country and creating alliances with individuals and institutions that share his passion for environmental justice.

Regan’s search for partners in this fight brought him to Houston, with his first stop being Texas Southern University to meet with Dr. Robert Bullard the “father of the environmental justice movement.” Regan then spent time with Mayor Sylvester Turner, touring Kashmere Gardens which has been ground zero for the city’s most recent bouts of environmental racism and eco-damage.

“I’m really excited to be here (at TSU),” said Regan. “I’m inspired that there’s such a dedication on this campus toward environmental justice and equity.”

Regan shared that environmental justice is “part of the DNA of the EPA.” “We want to partner with the best and brightest minds, and partnerships with HBCUs such as TSU are critical,” he added.

Regan has been on a week-long “Journey to Justice” tour through Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. The tour seeks to shine a spotlight on longstanding environmental justice concerns in historically marginalized communities.

“For anybody that doesn’t believe in environmental justice, I would invite them to travel the path that I just traveled. You will have no mistake that, in 2021, systemic racism is alive and well, and there are examples of how people are living on a daily basis

that prove that,” he said.

Bullard, for whom TSU’s Robert D. Bullard Center for Environmental and Climate Justice was named, echoed Regan’s sentiments.

“This is the right time, the right moment for action,” said Bullard. “It’s important that Administrator Regan is here on our campus; it’s no accident, and it says a lot about what we are doing at TSU to advance environmental justice.”

Regan also got to see up close and personal, Houston’s Fifth Ward as he and Bullard joined Mayor Turner on a bus tour of Kashmere Gardens and surrounding communities.

“As mayor, the people of Houston’s health and safety are my top priorities,” said Turner.

“For too long, people – and especially people of color – have been ignored when they have brought up environmental concerns. These injustices have left communities without information, without people fighting for them, and without hope for answers.

“Today, the voices of the people of Kashmere Gardens are being heard by the head of the EPA: Administrator Michael Regan.”

Turner said from the first time he met with Regan, he had neighborhood visit atop his agenda—Kashmere Gardens.

“I requested that he visit Houston and speak with Kashmere residents and tour the neighborhood. As Mayor, I want to thank him for showing up for Houston, showing up for Kashmere Gardens, and for being here today to not just hear from those in elected office, but also from those in the community who have been affected by these environmental risks.”

Turner emphasized that the EPA has been working hand-in-hand with the City of Houston in getting more complete information from Union Pacific regarding the environmental damage done to Kashmere Gardens.

“I want to thank Administrator Michael Regan and his staff for their continuing work,” Turner added.

The Houston Independent School District has temporarily reassigned several Madison High School employees after audio emerged of reported employees engaged in sexually explicit conversations.

But some students and parents say that’s not enough.

“We walked out because we’re tired of this dismissive atmosphere here at Madison,” said one 17-year-old student. “It’s no secret here how the male teachers make female students feel. So this recording surprises no one. It’s just past time that someone do something about it.”

HISD is investigating this incident and has temporarily reassigned the employees pending the outcome of the investigation. We take all allegations of misconduct seriously and will take appropriate action to ensure all of our students have access to a safe learning environment.” HISD did not say which department the employees work in, or how long the reassignment will last.

Longtime U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, D-Dallas, has announced she is not running for reelection after serving nearly three decades in Congress.

“I have gone back and forth … the whole time because of the pleading and the asking, but as of January … the year after next, I will step down,” Johnson said during an event in Dallas. “I will retire, and let me assure that I will also recommend to you whom I feel is the best to follow me.”

Johnson added she is looking for a “female that is qualified.”

First elected to Congress in 1992, Johnson, 85, is known for breaking barriers. She was the first Black woman ever elected to public office in Dallas when she won a state House seat in 1972. She went on to become the first registered nurse to ever serve in Congress.

Beatrice Green: celebration of a life lived in service

Not all heroes wear capes. Neither do they all have their names in history books.

Beatrice Green was one of those heroes whose good works and courageous commitment to justice and equality for all rarely, if ever made headlines. Yet, her work paved the way for African American voting rights in Texas and a slew of elected officials of color who walked through the doors Green helped opened.

Born one year before World War 1 began, Green’s 108 years on this planet witnessed great change, much of which she had a hand in. But what never changed for Green was her undying faith and her commitment to the Lutheran Church.

In fact, it was an interaction at a local Lutheran Church (Trinity Lutheran Church) that symbolized the stance for equality Green took throughout her life.

Bipartisan infrastructure bill will revitalize Black communities across America NNPA

The House sent the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to President Biden’s desk, legislation that will address economic disparities and the consequences of decades of disinvestment in America’s infrastructure that have fallen most heavily on communities of color. In response, DNC Chair Jaime Harrison released the following statement: “For years, Black Americans heard talk but didn’t see any action from Trump and Republicans who were unable to address critical community problems like lead leaching pipes, crumbling roads and bridges, and flooding streets.

“But now, thanks to President Biden, the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act will address these monumental concerns while also advancing racial justice and equity through investments in communities of color.

“Because of Democrats, neighborhoods across the country will be safer, healthier, better connected, and Black Americans will experience an enhanced quality of life for generations to come.”

• The bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act will invest roughly $65 billion — the single largest investment in clean energy transmission in American history — to upgrade our power infrastructure and reduce pollution. Black people are almost three times more likely to die from asthma-related causes than our white counterparts.

• Remediating brownfields and Superfund sites. 26% of Black Americans live within three miles of Superfund sites that can lead to elevated lead levels in our children’s blood. By providing $21 billion to cleanup efforts, the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act will help protect our children while providing good-paying union jobs to our communities.

Al Green, Elizabeth Warren reintroduce Slavery Remembrance Day resolution NNPA

Congressman Al Green (D-Texas) and U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) have introduced a joint resolution to designate August 20 as Slavery Remembrance Day. “I am privileged and proud to cosponsor this resolution with the Honorable Senator Elizabeth Warren,” Congressman Green stated in a news release.

“She has a rich history of standing up for those who are not in a position to stand up for themselves. I look forward to working with her and passing this historic legislation.”

The congressman said the legacy of slavery, which he called “our nation’s seminal sin,” continues casting its shadow across America today.

Green continued: “This resolution proposes August 20 be designated as Slavery Remembrance Day because on that day in 1619, the first slave ship arrived on the shores of the English-speaking American colonies. This annual reminder is necessary because it teaches persons to denounce oppression while simultaneously exemplifying why it should be denounced.

“However, efforts to teach about the suffering of enslaved persons are being fought by states like Texas with its recent bill to curb how race and the history of racism are taught in schools. The Texas bill is dangerous because it limits teaching by excluding any mention of historic individuals who challenged the discrim-

We must remember the history of slavery to avoid repeating the horrors of slavery.”

Warren stated that the horrors of slavery can never be forgotten.

“We must acknowledge the dangers and dehumanization that enslaved people faced, and honor those who led the long fight for abolition and justice,” the senator asserted.

“Today, the legacy of slavery still has pervasive impacts on the descendants of enslaved individuals in institutionalized racism, police brutality, mass incarceration, and in other forms. Representative Al Green and I are introducing this legislation to establish August 20 as Slavery Remembrance Day — an important step to ensure we never forget this stain on our country’s history.”

Black family Thanksgiving rules A hilarious look at some basic (un)written rules for holiday dinner.

After dinner, there are a few things that you have to know will happen. Someone will begin the consumption of brown liquor and spades and dominoes games will commence. If you don’t know how to play, just volunteer to take score. But know that one misplaced point is justifiable homicide.

For many Black families, Thanksgiving is an entirely different holiday than the traditional feast enjoyed by the mainstream culture. When the Pilgrims first celebrated Thanksgiving in 1621, Blacks in America probably weren’t invited to the festivities. Still, we’ve embraced the holiday and turned it into a celebration of our own.

In light of this year’s holiday, the Defender has compiled some basic Thanksgiving written and unwritten rules for Black families.

Of course, these may vary from family to family, but we’ve touched on some universal themes according the United Black Delegation (yeah, we made that up, but it sounds good).

MUSIC

Music makes Black Thanksgiving. So get ready for everything from The Temptations to Lil Boosie. Do know, however, that Aunt Martha is gonna scowl at all that “foul music.” Just try to find the clean version and do not point out how she regularly blasts Clarence Carter’s “Stroking.” By the way, Beyoncé’s version of “Before I Let Go” has not yet been certified as part of the Black Thanksgiving playlist. Please play only Frankie.

THE MENU

The number one thing Black folks ask when it comes to Thanksgiving dinner, is “What’s for dinner?” While meals vary based on location and tradition, the tried and true Black Thanksgiving menus must consist of: Turkey: Duh. This may seem like a no-brainer, but especially with this new generation, some folks have tried to replace the good ol’ turkey with duck, veal, or gasp, chicken. If you don’t have your turkey fried, baked, broiled or smoked, you’re just having Sunday dinner.

Dressing: Made from scratch. With cornbread.

Please do not experiment with anything your grandmother would not have put in her dressing, this includes carrots, raisins, grapes or any fruit whatsoever. FYI, Stovetop is stuffing, not dressing.

Greens: Collards, turnips, mustard, cabbage, seasoned with ham hocks or bacon or neckbones is a must. No canned greens. Period. By the way, save the kale for your non-Thanksgiving dinner lest you will get a serious side-eye from Aunt Minnie.

Mac & cheese: This is reserved for those who actually know how to put their foot in their cooking. FYI, making Kraft macaroni out of the box with slices of Velveeta cheese can get you cut.

Side dishes: If you must experiment, do it with your side dish. Just don’t be mad if its the only dish untouched at the end of the dinner.

Gravy: From scratch. Not in a jar or package. Gravy-making is not for everyone. It’s okay to accept that it’s not your gift.

Dessert: Desserts do not count if they are storebought (the unanimous exception is Pattie LaBelle’s pies).

Paper products or canned cranberry sauce: This is on the menu for all of those who cannot cook. Do not be ashamed to be in this category. Everything ain’t for everybody.

GRACE

Ideally, grace should only be said by a pastor, deacon or family member who doesn’t hesitate to tell you they are saved “In the name of Jesus.” Please note that the prayer can take anywhere from two to 20 minutes.

If you know Uncle Pastor is long-winded, sneak a dinner roll before grace.

LEFTOVERS

This is where the fights happen. No plate should be fixed until everyone has eaten seconds, and Big Mama has set aside a plate for Pastor. Do not try to fix and hide your plate before all the Mac & Cheese is gone.

There are no to-go plates for your boo would couldn’t make it. In fact, no to-go plates unless you’re fixing it for someone who had to work, is in jail, or again, on the sick-and-shut-in list.

LEAVING

PLATE-FIXING PECKING ORDER

In case you don’t know, there is an order to how Thanksgiving dinner shall be served: First-up: Consists of grandma, Pawpaw and all of those over age 70, as well as those who have a physical handicap, or have been listed on the church’s “sick and shut-in” list.

Notables: This includes all those who have been

appointed with some title or honor, even if it’s self-appointed, i.e., deacons, ushers, sno-cone lady, Sister so-and-so and anyone who has served on the Mother’s Board.

‘Chirren:’ This includes anyone under the age of 21 (or over 21 and still living at home) and children who “think they grown.”

CP-timers: If you missed grace, you need to wait until all of the above have eaten.

Empty-handers: You don’t get to eat until everyone has fixed their plate, twice.

DINNER CHATTER

We all know that Thanksgiving is a time to shoot the breeze, discussing any and everything. Unlike some white families, very few subjects are off-limit at Black Thanksgiving. The exceptions are: Death: This is not a morbid discussion, but instead

of recognition of those who have passed on. You’re best served just nodding in rememberance when someone brings up Mrs. Millie’s daughter’s baby daddy who shot that girl that lived two streets over.

Otherwise, your auntie is gonna keep on until she makes you remember.

Trifling kids: If Big Junior has once again gotten in trouble for writing hot checks, the discussion of ‘how that boy ain’t neva been no good’ is fair game. The

exception is if Big Junior’s mama is there. In that case, the general rule is ‘Don’t nobody betta say nothin’ bad about that boy.’

The past: Black families are forgiving. If Uncle Willy did a bid for armed robbery and is now sitting across from you, just tell him how good he looks and don’t bring up any old stuff.

ENTERTAINMENT

You’ve had an awesome time, made it through without a fight and it’s time to head out. Not so fast.

There is also a pecking order to how you say goodbye.

Grandparents: They’re gonna ask you where your coat is, and then tell you that it is too cold to be outside without at least a light jacket. Then they will ask you if you fixed yourself a plate and whisper how they hid a whole pie that you can take with you.

Aunts: You have to kiss them on their cheeks and thank them for praying for you. Assure them that you are still paying your tithes and offerings.

Uncles: Listen to them explain why this is the year that the Dallas Cowboys (the preferred team of uncles everywhere) will make it to the Super Bowl. The oldest uncle will ask if you need him to come to look at your alternator. Tell him no.

Cousins: This includes play cousins and all family members within a 10-year age range. They’re going to ask where you got a whole pie from. Tell them to mind their business and that grandma loves you more than she loves them.

Begging cousin: This is the cousin that’s gonna ask you to let him “hold a little somethin’ since you got that good job.”

Whoever was in the bathroom: They’re gonna run out of the house and proclaim that they know you weren’t gonna leave without saying goodbye to your favorite aunt/niece/cousin. You’ll roll down the window and talk to them for 13 more minutes. Most of it will be explaining how you got a whole sweet potato pie to yourself.

Thanksgiving is not the time to be experimenting with food dishes. If Big Mama been making the Mac & Cheese for the past 50 years that’s who makes it until she passes the recipe to someone else.

1. If your kids act up, don’t pull them to the side; beat them in front of us all so we know who in charge! And if you don’t, I will.

2. Don’t bring that weird friend nobody likes. It’s makes the whole dinner awkward!

3. If someone comes with a different date from last year, I’m asking what happened?

4. Don’t argue with your mate at the table and not think we won’t ask y’all all kinds of questions later. This is our business too now.

5. Don’t point at dishes and ask “Who made this?” cause you didn’t bring it.

6. Don’t bring people you didn’t ask to invite! Cause they will be put out with an empty to-go box.

7. Don’t make to-go plates for your “man” that didn’t want to come meet us. If he can’t come say “HELLO” he don’t deserve to eat “FAMILY” food! And don’t make no to-go plates before everybody eat.

8. Don’t sit at the spades table if you don’t know how to play.

9. Don’t be asking where I hid the extra red velvet cake or the peach cobbler cause I’m not telling you.

10. Don’t eat nothing if you didn’t BRING, BAKE or BUY anything! Just sit and stare.

11. If you know you can’t cook, don’t bring it. We won’t be offended... I PROMISE! 12. Please be attentive to personal hygiene.

If we can smell you I’m sure you can smell yourself. And if not, I have no problem telling you that you smell like old sweat socks and apple cider vinegar.

Govern thy selves accordingly.

You know dinner won’t start until 4 to 5 p.m. even though they said be there at 2 p.m. They actually say 2 p.m. because they know our kind will show up at 4p.m. And remember Tae Tae will come with five friends who will act like they helped buy the food but didn’t bring anything.

Coaches vs. Racism Teams bridge racial divide through sports

The executive director of the Coaches vs.

Racism campaign that brought men’s college basketball teams from Michigan and Prairie View A&M to the nation’s capital says he found inspiration for his new project from Coaches vs. Cancer.

“We wanted to make it a full experience, rather than just a basketball game between an HBCU school and a Power 5 school. Our vision is to kind of model it after Coaches vs. Cancer — (Dick Vitale) and ESPN have done a really good job of keeping the narrative alive of fighting cancer. And what I wanted to do was something similar to that,” Darryl Woods told the Associated Press.. “Cancer is a dreaded disease, and we look at racism as a disease. No one is born with it, but it can be brought upon you in various ways.”

Coach Juwan Howard and his No. 6-ranked Wolverines (1-0) recently took on Prairie View A&M (0-2) in a Big Ten vs.

Southwestern Athletic Conference matchup on Nov. 13 at an arena used for practice by the NBA’s Wizards and for games by the WNBA’s Mystics.

The inaugural Coaches vs. Racism contest is about more than the game. In addition to the matchup, both teams made a visit to the National Museum of African American History and Culture where a panel discussion and reception were held.

“Part of our mission is to educate, especially with this current generation. We really feel like this generation could be the one to put a dent in certain aspects of social injustice,” Woods said. “Our message is bridging the racial divide through sports. That’s really what we want to do. Its not a Black thing.

It’s not a white thing. It’s not a gender thing.”

He said his hope is to eventually schedule “multiple games in multiple cities” under the Coaches vs. Racism banner, and include women’s basketball, as well as perhaps other sports. As part of their mission, Coaches vs.

Racism has created the HBCU Roundball Classic, bringing Big 10 Schools, major universities and HBCU teams together for high-profile competitions. The games seek to amplify awareness of incredible athletic talent from both schools, and will place an emphasis on HBCUs who traditionally lack resources and equipment and are routinely overlooked by professional talent scouts.

By working together, and using our collective passion for sports, we hope Coaches vs. Racism will spark productive conversations to change the narrative about race in sports and serve as a revolutionary voice for change in our society.”

For Prairie View A&M, this was a chance for the Panthers to play a televised game and give themselves a test to see how they play against one of the top teams in the country. ”If there’s five teams in the country better than them, show them to me,” said Coach Smith.

This game also fits with the way Prairie View sets their schedule as they play 12

games on the road before playing in their own arena.

Michigan and Prairie View were selected for their on-court excellence, and that two Black coaches, Smith and Howard, are leading the charge at their schools to make a lasting impact.

“I do think that having two African American coaches being active participants in this movement is huge,” said Coach Smith. “Coach Howard has a tremendous platform, being a former NBA All-Star and doing one of the best college coaching jobs in the country. I’m hopeful that this will be a movement and not a moment.”

Dates are already lined up for the next Coaches vs. Racism event scheduled to be held in Las Vegas. ”The only thing I’m disappointed about is I challenged this guy to a game of one-onone, and he declined,” Smith said as Howard looked and laughed. “I need you guys to write that down. The story needs to read that Juwan ducked Byron. I needed to get one victory here.”

A portion of the proceeds from all Coaches vs. Racism games will be used to support marginalized students and student-athletes who are unable to complete their education due to lack of tuition funds. Coaches vs. Racism hopes to engage these students in a “Good Start” program before they drop out of college by raising funds to pay tuition for struggling students and paying off their respective student loans. The non-profit will place special focus on students at HBCUs. In addition to athletic programs and coaches across the country, Coaches vs. Racism has partnered with HBCUGO.TV to support its mission. Prairie View clinches SWAC West

The Prairie View Panthers were smashed by Texas A&M 52-3 but still emerged as SWAC West champs over the weekend after Alcorn State fell to Jackson State in conference play.

It’s the first time the Panthers Eric Dooley have advanced to the SWAC Championship Game since 2009. PV, which wraps up the SWAC regular season this weekend against Mississippi Valley State, will face Deion Sanders’ Jackson State Tigers in the conference championship on Dec. 4 in Jackson, Miss.

No out in sight for John Wall

Several teams, including the Miami Heat, are interested in signing the Rockets sitting point guard John Wall as long as a buyJohn Wall out can be negotiated on the $91.7 million he is owed over this season and next. Nobody wants to inherit the contract Wall can no longer play up to and Wall understandably isn’t interested in taking a pay cut to play elsewhere. So, he will continue to just sit with the Rockets.

TSU’s Cordero-Moreno All-SWAC

Texas Southern’s junior outside hitter Thalia Cordero-Moreno has been named to the AllSWAC First Team volleyball squad.

The Pearland native led the Lady Tigers this Thalia season with 256 Corderopoints, while Moreno recording 232 kills and 19 aces.

Tyrod Taylor difference maker?

For much of this season, veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor stood helpless on the sidelines as the Texans imploded on a weekly basis.

The team’s fortunes didn’t change much when Taylor was finally able to return from his hamstring injury and the Texans promptly fell to the also struggling Miami Dolphins, 17-9, on Nov. 7. The loss extended the Texans’ losing streak to eight games.

But Taylor says looking at the past isn’t going to do him or the Texans any good. It’s about finishing the last part of the season strong.

“Obviously, it happened, we lived it and we created it. But at the same time, you can’t look back and move forward at the same time,” said Taylor, who helped the Texans end their eight-game losing streak with the 22-13 upset of the Tennessee Titans.

“You have to go out with the ‘1-0’ mindset each week, winning the day. You can’t play the game on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

“You literally have to take it one day at a time, executing, focus each and every day and take that attitude one day at a time and one week at a time, and look up at the end of the season and see where you’re at. You can’t focus on the past.”

The hope is the return of the 11-year veteran quarterback can mask the Texans’ lack of overall talent in ways rookie quarterback Davis Mills could not in his six games as the starter. He was definitely a spark against the Titans, rushing for two touchdowns while completing 14 of 27 passes for 107.

It was a stark contrast to his first week back when the normally steady Taylor also struggled in his return against the Dolphins, completing 24 of 43 passes for 240 yards and three interceptions. Taylor looked about as out of synch in the Dolphins game as his teammates had in the six games he was sidelined.

But his coaches and teammates all believe Taylor will bounce back and provide the leadership and steadying force the team needs going into the latter part of the season.

“He’s a 10-year veteran. He’s been there and

he’s done that,” said Texans first-year coach David Culley. “He’s had a game under his belt.

It was eight weeks before he played a football game. He came back and played a football game, did not play very well, was not very sharp. That game will obviously help him.

“He’s always been a guy that doesn’t make the same mistakes twice and I hope moving forward that’s how we go with him.”

Receiver Brandin Cooks, who at times this season has expressed his frustration with the team, is glad to have Taylor back.

“I still think he gave us that boost in Miami,” Cooks said. “But it’s good to be able to have that game under his belt, had the bye week, had some extra time to prep. So, we look forward to getting back out there together.”

Taylor says having the bye-week prior to the Titans game has helped the mindset of the team going into the last half of the season.

“Definitely energized, refocused, understanding the opportunity that’s ahead of us, and looking forward to take that challenge head on,” Taylor said.

Adari Haulcy A Dynamic Force

When football analysts say that a corner has set up an island it means he has shut down his side of the field when it comes to quarterback passes. The same could be said about Fort Bend Marshall senior safety Adari Haulcy if he remains on his current trajectory.

As a junior, Haulcy was named an All-District selection with seven interceptions on the year. As a senior, he showed his versatility when he was moved around the secondary as a cornerback and was named an All-State selection this season.

In the run game, Haulcy is a big hitter from the secondary who can pack a punch with locomotive tackles. His eyes are improving following the quarterback and his awareness should grow with reps on the next level. He is a competitor in practice and it shows on the field.

Marshall head coach James Williams is impressed by his playmaker in the secondary after Haulcy returned two interceptions for touchdowns in a win against cross town rival Willowridge.

“He had seven interceptions last year and we have been moving him to different positions this year trying to find him a home...He is a great, dynamic player and he can make good things happen.”

The Defender spoke with Haulcy to discuss his style of play, major influences, ballhawk skills and more.
