“Man, this would be a dream come true if I can get one of those homes,” he said. “I can’t wait to find out.”

The project is reportedly still in the environmental review phase. During this phase, the public will have 15 days to submit any comments or concerns. If all systems are “go” according to the public, the request for the HUD funds can be completed, and new affordable housing will be available.

I-45 construction to begin in 2024

What started as a plan in 2002, with the Texas Department of Transportation and other agencies aiming to analyze options to rebuild I-45, is now set to begin. The department announced that it is set to start the construction of the North Houston Highway Improvement Project (NHHIP) in 2024.

The $9.7 billion project to rebuild Interstate 45 from downtown Houston north to Beltway 8, which includes the reconstruction of the downtown freeway system, was once expected to take until 2042 to complete.

NHHIP aims to manage traffic and congestion and promote ridesharing, on I‑45 from U.S. Highway 59/I‑69 to Beltway 8 North, including improvements along US 59/I‑69 between I‑45 and Spur 527 in Harris County.

An initial goal was to address flooding along the corridor.

The project that aims to widen I-45 from downtown, comprises three segments. Segment 1 includes Beltway 8 North to I-610.

Segment 2 is I-610 to I-10. And Segment 3 is the Downtown Loop System: I-45, I-10, and US 59/I-69. The third segment, in turn, comprises nine individual projects and runs through downtown.

“Our focus presently is on Segment 3, which will be the area that we move forward with first,” said TxDOT Communications Director, Raquelle Lewis.

Segment 3, which is now funded and ready for construction, faced the most backlash for the demolition of houses, businesses, and places of worship.

A lawsuit filed by Harris County paused TxDOT’s project for two years, alleging state officials did not take into consideration the project’s impacts on certain neighborhoods. It was finally cleared for development once the lawsuit was lifted, with concessions that address the impacts of the project on low-income, minority neighborhoods. In December 2022, Houston city leaders and Harris County reached a consensus to support the project, on the condition of TxDOT’s commitment to a set of assurances related to public health, safety, and housing.

“There is no perfect design,” Mayor Sylvester Turner said.

“On balance, with the improvements… I think you have an excellent project that will move forward and move the greater good.”

Analyses predicted that the project could displace more than 1,000 homes and apartments, 344 businesses, two schools, and five places of worship in primarily Black and Latino neighborhoods, according to the Associated Press.

“It’s very racially unjust,” Molly Cook with Stop TxDOT I-45, a community group that opposed the project said. “We’re going to spend all this money to make the traffic worse and hurt a lot of people.”

TxDOT’s plans to hold public meetings to share construction details on the project status with the public.

DN News ACLU, partners launch Abortion Advocacy Network

The American Civil Liberties Union of Texas (ACLU TX) has partnered with reproductive rights and justice organizations and pro-abortion Texans to launch the Texas Abortion Advocacy Network (TAAN). The network will lead the ongoing pursuit for reproductive freedom despite the near total ban on abortions in Texas.

The Texas Abortion Advocacy Network includes ACLU TX, AFIYA Center, Frontera Fund, Planned Parenthood Texas Votes, Jane’s Due Process, Avow, the Texas Equal Access Fund, Lilith Fund, Fund Texas Choice, and abortion advocates from across the state.

This network will mobilize supporters to respond to local threats to reproductive health and actively work to restore and expand abortion access in Texas.

Abortion supporters interested in learning how to become reproductive rights advocates and join the network should attend the TAAN Academy, which is hosting a 10-week series of classes that have already kicked off but can be joined at any time. The free, 10-week academy is an online course led by experts from each network organization.

“Since we can’t rely on the courts to protect our reproductive rights, we the people must organize and claim our freedom to make personal decisions about our bodies and our futures,” said Blair Wallace, policy and advocacy strategist at the ACLU of Texas.

Beyond the abortion ban, Texans face continued attacks on their reproductive freedoms despite the fact that the majority of Texans support abortions. Pregnant Texans are enduring more medical complications due to being forced to continue dangerous pregnancies. Pregnant Black and Brown Texans and their babies are more likely to die during and following childbirth.

TANN members believe the abortion ban reality will produce several tragedies. However, instead of addressing these issues, Texas lawmakers have voted to send millions of dollars toward funding anti-abortion centers and now are passing unconstitutional travel restrictions on pregnant people trying to leave Texas to get an abortion in states where it’s legal.

Residents meet with local leaders to discuss contamination in 5th Ward.

The Fifth Ward Voluntary Relocation Program, aimed at assisting residents near a contaminated Union Pacific rail yard, is making advancements according to city officials. With a $5 million fund sanctioned in September, efforts are underway to aid residents who have long sought remediation of the site.

The city and residents identify creosote, a likely human carcinogen used to treat railroad ties, as the contaminant. Designated a cancer cluster by the State Health Department in 2019, the area in urgent need spans around 110 parcels, with 61 residential units and 41 inhabited by residents. The rest encompass small businesses and nonprofits.

Stephen Costello, the city’s Chief Recovery Officer, highlights the program’s objective: acquiring all lots.

However, initial focus targets current residents due to time constraints and funding limitations.

Despite the city’s relocation offers, some residents remain hesitant. Out of 41 surveyed households, 31 responded, leaving 18 pending, excluding abandoned or refused properties. Interest in moving includes seven homeowners, two renters, and a unique case, as per the city.

Costello anticipates increased resident interest once the relocation gains traction. Concerns, shared among those willing and reluctant to relocate, revolve around sentimental attachment to homes, increased taxes, limited affordable housing options, and adapting to a new community.

The city proposes buyouts for homeowners owning their homes or with mortgages. Collaborating with nonprofits, residents can select a new location and a builder, termed a “dual closing.” The city covers expenses, applying sale proceeds toward new housing without a financial loss, accompanied by a forgivable loan tied to residency duration.

Renters are offered $10,000 to relocate, inspired by a model from New Orleans. Family Houston, partnering with individuals, aids with $5,000 toward initial rent payments, while remaining funds assist with moving costs. Lease termination expenses will be covered, with efforts to prevent re-renting by negotiating property acquisition with landlords.

Union Pacific’s additional testing doesn’t contribute to relocation efforts, despite requests. They’ve declined involvement until causality between their creosote plume and the situation is established.

Union Pacific introduced HWPW Forward, emphasizing transparency and community collaboration in Fifth Ward affairs. The initiative aims to provide timely, accurate updates and foster better communication with the residents.

School vouchers removed

The recent removal of the school voucher provision from the education bill by GOPled votes in the Texas House has triggered a spectrum of reactions from HISD parents and community organizers.

House Bill 1, while earmarking funds for educator salary raises and school safety, faced scrutiny for a contentious provision proposing voucher-like education savings accounts (ESAs). These ESAs would allocate $10,500 annually to eligible students for private or parochial school tuition and other educational expenses.

This decision has become a focal point in the ongoing struggle for HISD educators, parents, and community organizers who feel disenfranchised by Superintendent Mike Miles and the Board of Managers. Frustrated by perceived inaction at the local level, community members took their concerns directly to state representatives.

Speaking out

HISD teacher Tonya Sampson argued that school vouchers give more “choices” to those with children in private schools than to “low-income, impoverished families” who need educational support for their children in the public school system.

She was one of the more than two dozen community members who traveled to Austin on Nov. 15 to voice their concerns about the impacts of the state takeover of the State Board of Education (SBOE).

Although Sampson’s main focus was to testify about feasible action items like the impacts of the reinstatement of the Verizon internet connectivity program to combat the digital divide, she said community members later spoke to legislators at the Capitol after a rather disappointing non-response from Texas Education Agency Commissioner Mike Morath.

“Many testified about several problems with the drastic changes to the district since the takeover, but there was only so much the state board could do from what they explained,” she said. “If the goal is to close achievement gaps, don’t shut down access to resources that are equipped to do so, like the internet. Also, fix the crisis in public schools so there won’t be a need for voucher conversations in the first place.”

Lauren Williams, an HISD parent and a community organizer with the Houston Community Voices for Public Education (CVP)dismissed the voucher vote as expected, denouncing it as a “scam” that might benefit affluent families but leave inner-city students struggling to afford private school tuition even with vouchers.

“These private schools have waitlists about two to three years long, and some of

asserting that the intervention is driven by a commitment to achieving the district’s goals and ensuring his ‘wholescale systemic reform’ will significantly narrow the achievement gap, as outlined in Destination 2035.

“I’m sorry to say, when you have the same people saying the same things every day and every month and then they say the same things in Austin, without much information, without much inquiry to what exactly happened, it’s not that we dismiss it, it’s certainly going to be discounted.”

The embattled superintendent initiated “Straight from the Source,” a series of monthly briefings for the HISD community.

The first of these sessions took place on Nov. 15 at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center to discuss updates on the district’s progress and goals.

The series comes after the District Advisory Committee (DAC) greenlit a plan that will move HISD one step closer to becoming a District of Innovation (DOI), which will open the doors to several policy changes, including changes to the start of the school year, creating stringent performance evaluations, and hiring uncertified teachers.

“Houston is rallying around its students, making decisions based on their best interests,” Miles said in a message on X [formerly known as Twitter]. “This is the culture change taking place across our community and the transformative work underway in HISD.”

Morath has the power to change things, and until then, we will frustrate him and hold him accountable every time he thinks about HISD.” Opponents argue that the vouchers will divert funds from public schools. Funding is tied to class attendance, so the average budget is reduced by about $10,000 when a student leaves.

However, not all parents share Williams’ sentiment. Michael Thompson, a father of two, expressed disappointment at removing

the voucher provision because he preferred to see options that better aligned with his family’s religious values and beliefs.

“We are months into this takeover. We have to try to be open to what plans they have to turn the district around, considering it wasn’t working before these appointed members got here,” he said. “Let’s try to be open, educate ourselves, and make the right decisions for our families.”

“We want people to obviously talk about the challenges, but also talk about the progress.” Miles said. “You hear enough sometimes about the distorted view in terms of what is going on, their misinformed viewpoints, and it’s time we hear from people who are doing the work.”

Miles said he plans to work with the newly elected board of trustees, considering their role as advocates for the districts they represent.

“I’ll continue to have quarterly meetings with the elected board members if they want,” he said. “I had meetings with all the elected board members this last quarter, and before the end of January. We’ll have a second set of meetings with the elected board, and then we’ll have it every quarter.”

C.J. STROUD Just what the Texans need?

It was always expected that quarterback C.J. Stroud would grow into the Texans’ star franchise quarterback.

That’s what’s understood when a quarterback-needy franchise takes a quarterback No.2 overall in the NFL Draft like the Texans did with Stroud this past spring. If there was any uncertainty, it was how long would the process take.

One season? Two seasons, maybe?

But 10 games into his NFL career, that moment has arrived as Stroud threatens to re-write all of NFL rookie quarterback records and the season still has at least seven games to go. Even the always-confident Stroud has been impressed with his rapid growth.

“It’s been amazing. It’s been good. It’s been a dream come true,” Stroud said. “It’s been hard.

It’s been challenging. It’s been everything that I’ve asked for and more, you know?

“So, being an NFL quarterback isn’t easy, but that’s why I feel like I was chosen to take on this role, and I feel like I’m trying to do [as] best as I can, and I’m blessed enough to have the support system around me – from my family, to my teammates, to the front office, to my coaches – everybody around me has been helping a lot.

And I feel like I’m trying to do the same with them, as well.”

STAR IN THE MAKING From most vantage points, Stroud seems to be holding up his end of the bargain. Before Sunday’s home win against the Arizona Cardinals, he became just the fourth rookie in NFL history to accumulate 2,500 passing yards in his first nine starts.

Stroud also established a new single-game rookie record a few weeks ago when he passed for 470 yards and five touchdowns in the win over Tampa Bay. In no time, he is putting up non-rookie-like numbers and leading the rebuilding Texans to improbable wins and winning over his team and coaches in the process. He enters Sunday’s home game against the AFC South leader Jacksonsville as the NFL’s second-leading passer with 2,962 yards to go along with 17 touchdown passes and just five interceptions.

But even bigger, is he is leading the Texans to wins. They are riding a three-game winning streak after the 21-16 victory over the Cardinals to improve to 6-4 on the season, which is good enough for second place in the AFC South. And if the playoffs were to begin today, they would be in.

Not bad for a team that hadn’t won more than four games in a season since 2019.

“With C.J. [Stroud], I think the thing that impresses me the most is just how the guys in the locker room – how he’s won the locker room and the guys play for him,” first-year Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said. “Guys truly believe in C.J. He exudes confidence, and our entire team is confident I think because of what C.J. has done.”

READY TO LEAD That’s because of the work they’ve seen him put in since the day he stepped into Houston fresh off Ohio State’s campus. The charismatic and God-fearing youngster has been about nothing but his business.

“You could tell when he first came in, he had the ‘It Factor’ about him,” Texans’ third-year receiver Nico Collins said to the Defender.

“There were no worries about him, he wasn’t nervous. He was normal.

“He just came in straight to it. He’s ready to lead. It shows every week. Every week he is continuing to get better and better.”

His calm and confidence have carried over to the playing field where Stroud has been the epitome of cool under pressure. Despite playing with a makeshift offensive line, a still-developing rushing attack and a receiving corp that is without a legit star, Stroud has found ways to make plays.

During a two-week stretch, he led the Texans on back-to-back game-winning drives in the waning moments against Tampa Bay and Cincinnati. With 46 seconds and two timeouts remaining against Tampa Bay, Stroud guided the offense downfield and hit rookie receiver Tank Dell with a 15-yard TD pass with six seconds left on the clock to seal the 39-37 win over the Buccaneers.

took the offense down the field in the final 93 seconds to set up Matt Ammendola’s 38-yard field goal as time expired in the 30-27 victory on the Bengals.

“It’s very calming when you know you have a great quarterback in C.J., a guy who is ready for the moment and a guy who really believes in himself and his teammates,” said Texans safety Jalen Pitre. “When it’s a tie game or even if we are down going into the last part of the game, we know that we have a great quarterback and great offense that wins games. It’s very encouraging, and man I’m glad they are all on my team. They are some ballers. They’ve saved us two times.”

His teammate say they have no problem following his lead, even as a rookie who is still learning as was evident when the threw a season-high three interceptions during the win over Arizona.

“That’s real, but you’ve just got to know, you’re the quarterback and you are supposed to lead this team,” Collins said. “Age don’t matter no more. You are QB1, let’s go. You run this operation, right now.

“We are going to have his back and he knows it. I feel like for him it’s a matter of letting him build his confidence and show him that we trust in him.

“For him it’s going to continue to slow down and continue to grow and continue to chase greatness.”

REMAINING CALM THROUGH THE NOISE Collins has continued to be impressed.

“It’s amazing to see,” Collins said. “I’m not going to lie, coming from a first-year quarterback, he’s got it. It’s scary what else he can do with us. It’s left out there, dude has got it.”

Just like that, Stroud has become the talk of the NFL, so much so it seems NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year is likely already his. The jersey he wore in the record-setting game against Tampa Bay has landed in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

But what has been most amazing is how Stroud has managed to stay calm through the noise and chaos that is engulfing him on and off the field.

“For me, it’s just a lot of prayer and knowing that God wouldn’t put anything on me that I can’t handle,” Stroud said. “I don’t deserve his grace and his mercy, but he still gives it to me, and I love him for that. It’s not about me, it’s about him and his glory. I think that’s where it comes from. I think God made me like that. I have been through a lot not only in football, but things that made me kind of chill when things get crazy. I thank God for putting that in me because that’s something you need when you play this position in this league.”

So, being an NFL quarterback isn’t easy, but that’s why I feel like I was chosen to take on this role, and I feel like I’m trying to do [as] best as I can, and I’m blessed enough to have the support system around me.”

Debra Blacklock-Sloan History maker, history marker

When asked “Who is Debra Blacklock-Sloan,” the historical researcher and genealogist said she “is a native Houstonian, a sixth generation Texan, who is committed to preserving the African American footprint in Texas and anywhere else I can.” And she belongs to several historical organizations committed to that very cause.

With 20 years of experience in historical preservation and 30 years in genealogy, the Wheatley alumna channels her anger from being spoon-fed a “whitewashed” history into her work as a historical marker, literally marking historical moments and events across the state, while finding the time to work as a museum docent and historical researcher for the Yates Museum in Freedmen’s Town.

The Defender caught up with Blacklock-Sloan to learn more about her and her incredible work.

DEFENDER: What led you to become a historical researcher and genealogist?

BLACKLOCK-SLOAN: The reason I

became a genealogist is because I met my dad’s aunt. And when I saw her, she was tall and lanky, she had my features. And I was just fascinated with her because she didn’t resemble my Louisiana maternal grandmother.

And I became fascinated with her. Instead of going out and talking to people my age, I interviewed her asking where she came from, who were her parents, who were her grandparents, and all of that. And I was hooked. I’ll never forget, that was in January of 1998. The following month, I was in Clayton Library researching my ancestors. I’ve been able to go back six generations. I’m a sixth-generation Texan. So, as far as the historical research, that falls in line with genealogy.

We have to teach our children to read. We have to instill a love of reading in our children. To me, that’s what we have to do. And my grandkids love to read...They already know they’re going to read when they come here. No iPads.”

DEFENDER: Why is history, family history in particular, something that’s critical for Black people?

BLACKLOCK-SLOAN: Well, family his-

tory is important. It’s because we need to know who we are and what we came from.

I’m an Alex Haley nut. I have his book, I have his video on Roots, everything. We need to know where we came from, and be proud of where we came from. Also, because we don’t tell each other who we’re related to, we end up marrying, dating each other. I can’t tell you the horror stories about people who didn’t ask enough questions about who they were dating. In the generation of my grandfather, who was born in the 1890s, if

people came around to date my mother or her sister, they would ask, “Boy, who’s your people?” They were asking that for two reasons, obviously, but we need to know who we came from. I tell people to do their DNA, which will make you laugh or make you cry.

DEFENDER: With banned books and attacks against CRT, what can the community do to push back?

BLACKLOCK-SLOAN: Well, I used

to work as a librarian’s assistant for Aldine ISD, so I’m really offended by the banned books. But first, how do you ban books in a democracy? I would suggest, even with my grandkids, they were a year old, I read

to them. They’re still readers. So, let’s push reading as much as we can. We can start book clubs. And then again, we’ve got to get our story out there. I’m a big Nikole Hannah Jones fan of telling our truth. I’m like her. Let’s stand flat-footed and tell the truth on what’s happening. I feel sorry for the librarians. I don’t know what they can do. But, again, we have to teach our children to read. We have to instill a love of reading in our children. To me, that’s what we have to do. And my grandkids love to read. They know if they come here, no iPads. This is a no iPad zone. I’m the iPad. They already know they’re gonna read when they come here. No iPads, no cell phones.

DEFENDER: How did you meet, and what initially sparked your passion for food and culinary exploration?

Allison Onyina: We are both from Huntsville, Texas.

a small town. He graduated high school right when I got into high school. Our paths fully crossed once we both went to UT in Austin. During my freshman year, he reached out to say that he was also from Huntsville and that he was a great resource. Over the years, we developed a really good friendship, which developed into a relationship. He would cook meals and drive me home because I didn’t have a car then. We’ve been together for five years and married three weeks ago. It’s been great.

DEFENDER: “A Couple of Bites” is about blending food reviews, date night ideas, and lifestyle content. What inspired you to combine these elements into your content, and what unique perspective do you bring to your audience?

Alex Onyina: We originally started the idea in Atlanta.

Allison went to Atlanta for grad school, and I followed her.

While we were there, TikTok began to take off during quarantine. We were looking for places to go in Atlanta. We would see videos posted by different influencers at the time. We added all those things to our list. We would have friends and family visit us, and they would ask us about places to go and where to eat. So, being natural foodies, I think food is our natural language, as cliché as it sounds. I used to cook for her in school, so we’ve always shared a love for food.

We decided to dive into it and see if the TikTok audience reacted, and they loved it. We had a couple of videos that went viral in Atlanta then. We had so much feedback and support, so we kept going. We were growing a community, especially amplifying Black-owned businesses. It allowed us to meet different people, not only other influencers but restaurant owners and also the general public. It was interesting to see how people would recognize us on the street.

We eventually decided to move back to Texas and be closer

to family, especially as we married. We prayed about this and had multiple conversations, and God allowed us to explode here. It’s unbelievable how we’ve grown and how much the city has embraced us.

DEFENDER: Many couples face challenges when planning romantic gestures or date nights. What advice do you have for your audience regarding keeping the romance alive and creating memorable moments together?

Allison: Find something that you both enjoy. We had to

do that because he liked to go to some places, but I wanted to do something other than that, and vice versa. I’m more of a homebody than he is. Sometimes, I want to stay home, and he still gets creative. Date nights can be anywhere at any time. Create those moments together, even if it’s not at a restaurant.

DEFENDER: What impact have you had in this space, and what sets you apart from others who do similar content?

Alex: This lady reached out to us and mentioned her hus-

band. They were separated, and she told us that by following our page. She has been able to rekindle her marriage by doing things we post regularly. To know that our content impacts people is very rewarding for us. It’s a blessing. Everything we do, we put our heart and soul into it. It could take us a whole week to edit one video because we both have different perspectives, but we find our balance and work as a team to bring meaningful content to others.

DEFENDER: What’s next for “A Couple of Bites”?

What message do you want to give our Under 40 audience?

Alex: We’re back! We took a little hiatus because our wed-

ding planning consumed our lives. Now that the wedding is over, we’re excited to return to bringing new, innovative ideas and opportunities for the community to explore. This is an evolving process. Our journey isn’t going to be like everyone else. There will be growing pains, but know that on the other side of those pains is truly monumental.

Allison: Follow your passion and go after it. When I first started, we thought no one would care about our recommendations or the places we were going. Over time, people cared.

DN Feature Local Sigma Gamma Rho chapters help raise $1M for children

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated has completed a historic pledge made in 2021 to raise $1 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, thanks to efforts of members across the c ou nt r y, i n c lu d ing right here in Houston.

The move makes the organization the first Divine Nine sorority to raise this much money for the children’s hospital. Sigma Gamma Rho initially raised nearly $500,000 for St. Jude. As part of the push to reach $1 million, leadership pledged a three-year sponsorship for the annual St. Jude Walk/Run, held during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month each September.

In 2023, the organization entered more than 200 Walk/Run teams in cities across the United States, helping it cross the fundraising finish line this year. So far this year, members in the Houston metro area have raised $9,800 for the 2023 Houston St. Jude Walk/Run (which occurred on September 30, 2023). For this effort, the

sorority engaged its members, Rhoer Club Affiliates (teenage girls) and Philo Club Affiliates (friends of the sorority). In addition to financial support, Houston’s Gamma Phi Sigma Chapter of SGRho also provided coloring books to St. Jude patients in Houston.

Fundraising for the effort continues through December 31, 2023.

Liber ty, said, “Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. is grateful for the opportunity to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s work to find cures and help save the lives of children all over the world. This accomplishment aligns with our sorority’s motto, ‘Greater Service, Greater Progress.’ We look forward to continuing our partnership with St. Jude in the years to come.”

International Programs Coordinator, Zeretha Brickhouse says she was ecstatic

to see members accept the challenge.

“It has been a tremendous pleasure watching local chapters champion around St. Jude’s mission to end childhood cancer and other devastating conditions like sickle cell by forming teams and encouraging members to fundraise and show up for in person Walk/Run events,” Brickhouse said. “Members accepted the challenge to reach the million-dollar goal led by a friendly competition between each of the five regions with the winner being the families who benefit from the great work of St. Jude. Our Metro Houston Chapters mobilized together in order to ensure that this goal was met.”

Kehinde Wiley’s Pandemic-era paintings come to MFAH

The Museum of Fine Arts Houston is currently hosting a riveting exhibition featuring the profound creations of renowned artist Kehinde Wiley, born out of the tumultuous summer of 2020. Kehinde Wiley: An Archaeology of Silence, has been called a monumental body of work created against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, the murder of George Floyd, and the global rise of the Black Lives Matter movement.

The exhibition had its U.S. premiere earlier this year at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and is on view at the MFAH from November 19, 2023, to May 27, 2024.

Wiley, catapulted into the limelight after immortalizing President Barack Obama in an iconic portrait, has long been revered for his distinctive approach. He skillfully reimagines classical artistry by infusing modern Black models—often plucked from the streets—into his works, capturing them adorned in their everyday attire. His previous exhibits at prestigious institutions like the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and the MFAH have left indelible marks.

Drawing inspiration from his childhood encounters with 18th-century portraiture at the Huntington Art Museum, Wiley’s fascination with the opulence and exclusivity depicted in those classical portraits laid the foundation for his artistic rebellion. He sought to disrupt traditional perceptions of class and taste by channeling that power into individuals who resembled himself, subverting the historical norms of dominance and control.

the world. These 26 works stand as elegies and monuments, underscoring the fraught terms in which Black people are rendered visible, especially when at the hands of systemic violence.

Wiley has said, “That is the archaeology I am unearthing: The specter of police violence and

state control over the bodies of young Black and Brown people all over the world.”

“Kehinde Wiley’s elegies, at once sublimely beautiful and deeply disturbing, are profoundly moving, even unforgettable. We are very proud to exhibit them at the Museum and participate in this national tour,” commented Gary Tinterow, Director, the Margaret Alkek Williams Chair, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

An Archaeology of Silence reconceptualizes this research into paintings and sculptures that confront the legacies of colonialism through the visual language of the fallen figure. The resulting paintings of Black people struck down, wounded, resting, or dead, all referencing iconic historical paintings of heroes, martyrs, or saints, offer a haunting meditation on the violence against Black and Brown people through the imagery of European art-historical references.

Kehinde Wiley: An Archaeology of Silence contains some of the largest paintings and sculptures Wiley has created to date, as well as some of the smallest. The series uses scale to elevate the people depicted to heroic status, generally

absent from the depictions of the recumbent or fallen figure in Western art (including those that Wiley’s works have been based on). It marks an important departure in the artist’s work which, with the notable exception of “Down,” has been primarily concerned with verticality and elevation, projecting Black youth into positions of power and grace.

Against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, Wiley had to forgo his usual practice of “street casting”; he instead worked with residents, staff, and friends of Black Rock, a residency program he established in 2019 in Dakar, Senegal, and where he spent most of his time during the international lockdown. With the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, Wiley saw an opportunity to broaden the conversation beyond national concerns. The figures’ personal markers of Senegalese and West African culture, with regard to hair in particular, serve as a metaphor for the many places where you find systematically oppressed communities of Black and Brown people experiencing the same systemic violence, around the world.

TSU parts ways with head coach Clarence McKinney

In a move that seemed destined, Texas Southern has parted ways with head football coach Clarence McKinney after five seasons.

The school decided not to renew McKinney’s contract, which is set to expire on Dec. 15. Word leaked last week TSU would not renew McKinney, a rumor athletic director Kevin Granger said wasn’t true at the time.

But considering McKinney’s disappointing record this season and McKinney the fact he had failed to post a winning record in any of his five seasons, it would have been hard for Granger to justify bringing him back and extending his contract.

“Texas Southern University will not renew the contract of head football coach Clarence McKinney when it expires on Dec. 15, 2023,” Granger said in a released statement. “We wish Coach McKinney well moving forward. The University will begin a nationwide search for our next head coach immediately.”

It seemed a foregone conclusion TSU and McKinney would part ways after he posted his fifth straight losing season at the school that hasn’t had a winning season since the early 2000s. The Tigers allowed Arkansas-Pine Bluff to rally on Saturday to a 35-34 win – its first SWAC victory of the season -- at Shell Energy Stadium. Six days earlier, TSU upset SWAC West co-champ Alcorn State 44-10.

McKinney finished 12-35 overall and 9-26 in the SWAC during his five seasons.

McKinney, a respected recruiter, had certainly improved the talent at TSU during his tenure. The wins were the issue. The Tigers were picked to finish third in the SWAC preseason poll before this season but ended up at 3-8 overall and 2-6 in the SWAC, which was good enough for fifth place in the standings.

This season was particularly tough for McKinney, who lost star quarterback Andrew Body to injury after just one game. Sophomore Jace Wilson stepped in and improved as the season went on. But it wasn’t enough.

The Tigers entered the season amid high expectations after last season, coming within seconds of winning the SWAC West title and going to the conference championship game. But TSU struggled to finish games, losing four games by six or fewer points.

Assistant head coach Jerwin Wilson, who addressed the media in McKinney’s place hours before the announcement Monday, said the feeling was that the Tigers were close to finally turning the corner. Wilson claimed not to know McKinney’s status at the time of the SWAC Football Media Call.

“Obviously, if those four games are flipped we wouldn’t be having this conversation,” said Wilson, who was standing in for McKinney because he was attending the funeral of the three former University of Houston football players killed in an auto accident last week. “We just have to be able to get over the hump and control what we can control.”

Texas Southern junior guard Daeja Holmes scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed eight rebounds during the Lady Tigers 109-67 win over North America.

Preseason slight propels

PRAIRIE VIEW to SWAC championship game

Coaches often use whatever slight they can find as motivation for their players.

Imagine the gift Prairie View football coach Bubba McDowell received when the Panthers were selected to finish fifth in the SWAC West in the preseason poll in July, despite bringing back much of their talent from a team that had either won or tied for the division title the previous two seasons, including third-year starting quarterback Trazon Connley.

McDowell ran with it.

“We made it very clear,” McDowell said to the Defender this week. “‘They voted you guys here even after the season you had last year. What are you going to do about it?’ We’ve been throwing it in their face every chance we get. ‘Now you have to go out there and prove everybody wrong.’”

The Panthers have done just that. As a result of last weekend’s 21-14 home win over Alabama State, they are headed back to the SWAC Championship Game for the second time in the last three seasons. They will face the FCS’s seventh-ranked Florida A&M Rattlers in the conference championship game on Dec. 2 in Tallahassee, Fla. It’s a mountain to climb, considering the Rattlers are stacked on both sides of the football and come into this game riding a 16-game winning streak in SWAC play and have won their last eight straight games. And when Prairie View traveled to Tallahassee last month, things didn’t end well after FAMU used a big second half to prevail with a 45-7 blowout victory at Brass Memorial Stadium.

The Panthers will be a decided underdog again this time around, but it’s still an opportunity nonetheless.

“Going down there, we knew what happened last time. We didn’t have everybody with us last time, had some guys hurt, some guys suspended during the course of that game,” said McDowell, whose team is 6-5 overall and 6-2 in SWAC play. “But we should have everybody healthy and ready to go.”

Since the Oct. 28 loss to the Rattlers, Prairie View has gone on a three-game winning streak to earn at least a share of the West title for the third straight season.

Another slipup would have meant another

Led by a swarming defense, the Prairie View Panthers are headed back to the SWAC Championship Game for the second time in three years where No.7 Florida A&M awaits on Dec. 2.

“It means a lot. It was big,” McDowell said of winning the West Division title.

“We’ve been in this position several times when Coach (Eric) Dooley was here, and with (Willie) Simmons (the current FAMU coach). We’ve had chances in the past to secure a bid for the SWAC Championship and it didn’t happen. Of course, last year we were in the same situation.

“We still have some work to do, so once we get there we still have to take care of our business. They knew exactly what I meant by that and they’ve been going out these last several games and putting things together and clicking all on the same page, offensively, defensively and special teams-wise.”

While Simmons is confident in his group, which has gone 10-1 overall and 8-0 this season, he has cautioned them to forget about what transpired in last month’s win over the Panthers.

“It’s the championship game, so I expect those guys to come in and play with the thought that they can win it. That’s what you would expect from those guys,” said Simmons, whose team has won all 10 games it has been favored in this season.

“We’ve got to be prepared for a dog fight.

That’s championship-level football.

“There are only two teams left standing. Most FCS teams have turned in their

shoulder pads. We are blessed with the opportunity to still be playing football.

I’m sure those guys are, too. Whenever you have that, you have to expect that those guys are coming in here fired up, ready to play.”

The Panthers will head home for the Thanksgiving Break this week, then return next week to finish preparing for the Rattlers. McDowell has no doubt his team will remain focused on this showdown.

“They know what the task is and they deserve what they have right now.,” McDowell said. “They know what we are going to do. We know what they are going to do. We just have to go out there and play lights-out football against a good football team.

Players took the 2022 loss personally and focused on improvement during the off-season. One of those players was senior quarterback Jordan Reaves.

“Jordan Reaves makes a coach look great. He’s strong, he’s an elite runner, has a cannon for an arm, and no moment is too big for him. He is made for this,” said Lamar head football coach Michael Lindsey. “I texted him this morning and I said, ‘Are you ready?’ He said, ‘I was born ready.’ He’s a dream to coach because he’s absolutely a great teammate, great ball player, and great person.”

Reaves was a part of the Lamar team whose season was cut short by Ridge Point last year.

“We put in a lot of hard work in the off-season so we wouldn’t come up short again,” said Reaves.

Reaves began playing football when he was six years old. He started out playing with various notable programs: Southside Colts, Fresno Gators, and later the Central Houston Titans. He attended Hartman Middle School, Beverly Hills Intermediate and then Lamar High School. While visiting Lamar with a friend he met Lindsey.

“Lamar had a field house with a turf field. So, I went on a tour with a friend to see the school and that’s when I met Coach Lindsey. He is more than a coach; he played a big part of my life all four years,” said Reaves.

At Lamar, Reaves began to work hard.

He played varsity his freshman year, but he was always behind seniors. While most people would have gotten frustrated,

Reaves kept his head down and continued to work.

“I played several positions, from special teams, halfback, fullback, wide receiver, but most of the time I was playing behind seniors,” said Reaves.

When Kenneth Rosenthal graduated, the Lamar Texans were in search of a quarterback and the opportunity presented itself to Reaves. For the first time, Reaves was going to be starting at quarterback hoping to guide his team to a state title.

Reaves took the summer to work on reading coverages and being patient on offense.

“I worked with Coach Boykins and played 7on7,” said Reaves.

As Lamar began to bond as a team, they continued working. During district play, they only allowed 15 total points by opposing teams. This led to some teams saying, “Lamar hasn’t played anyone of notable quality.” After Beating Ridgepoint 31-28 and advancing to the third round of playoffs Reaves believes that saying is true.

“I believe them. I still feel like we haven’t played nobody,” said Reaves.

Reaves is a huge part of the Lamar offense and his elusiveness is similar to that of CJ Stroud.

“I watch a lot of CJ Stroud, Lamar Jackson, and Josh Allen. I like how they are magicians. If the play goes wrong, they can still make a play. That’s what I try to do. If a play breaks down I want to still be able to make something out of that,” said Reaves.

Reaves is currently uncommitted but is looking for a program that has great academics, a winning atmosphere and a coach who genuinely cares about his players.

“I’m looking for the next level of this feeling here. A coach who actually loves

me for who I am and is a father figure on and off the field rather than just wanting to win football games,” said Reaves.

While in school he hopes to study Kinesiology.

“I was able to take a kinesiology class at Lamar. We had one of the best trainers. She inspired me to become more interested in that field of study,” said Reaves.

While looking over his accomplishments, Reaves looks back and offers advice to the next generation of talent.

“Keep your faith in God and keep the right people around you.

You can always do it with God. Put your faith in God. That’s what I do,” said Reaves.
