HPD body cams scrutinized

The Houston area has an opportunity to become advocates for more effective body cameras to protect both the citizens and the police officers. Body cameras have come to symbolize increased accountability and transparency.

However, after several months of investigation, a team of reporters from KHOU-TV, led by Jeremy Rogalski, unveiled findings that indicate the majority of Houston police are not wearing body cams, and those that are wearing the cameras are not turning them on.

The team also found that oversight and accountability is almost non-existent.

In an effort to educate the AfricanAmerican community, KHOU-TV and Community of Faith leader Bishop James Dixon hosted a meeting to review segments of the Ch. 11 docu-series “Transparency: Body Cameras.” Several elected officials attended, including city councilmembers Michael Kubosh and Brenda Stardig, State Senator John Whitmire and Sheriff-elect Ed Gonzales.

“Public safety is all of our concerns… without it, we can’t feel safe or be safe.

All of us are on the same side. This is an honest discussion and dialogue on a subject that is bigger than body cameras,” stated Bishop Dixon.

Rogalski says the investigative project was important because of the current climate.

community relations, and body cameras can foster accountability on both sides of the lens. But true transparency is about much more than just outfitting a cop with a camera. This docu-series shows how the Houston Police body worn camera program has fallen short of its promise. The department is not checking up on officers to see if they’re recording when it counts. The department has struggled to get video evidence to prosecutors in time for court. And the department is woefully behind on releasing body camera videos to the public--taking months to do so.”

In 2013, Houston launched a body camera pilot program under Police Chief Charles McClelland. Last year, Houston City Council approved $8 million to implement a body-camera program for

police to provide more transparency of interactions between officers and the community. In April 2016, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner deployed the first distribution of 200 body cameras to officers at central command. As of Sept.

21, 2016, Houston police issued body cameras to 856 officers. By March 2018, HPD plans to assign more than 4,100 officers with cameras.

During the Summer of 2016, the shooting death of Alva Braziel by Houston Police triggered additional scrutiny of the body camera program. Evidence revealed the shooting was not caught on tape because the officer wearing a bodycam did not turn it on until after the shooting, which showed a gun next to the body.

Councilman Kubosh said, “It’s an in-

sult to the public. This is a game changer in our city, if we don’t have confidence in our system.” Both Kubosh and Stardig stressed only Mayor Sylvester Turner could get this item placed on the agenda.

In response to the concerns raised regarding the body cameras, Mayor Turner’s Communication director Janice Evans issued this statement, “The mayor has shown a willingness to revise policies. For instance, since he took office, we have increased the buffering time for the body worn cameras from 30 seconds to two minutes, allowing for a longer look back period. This change was a direct result of the shooting of Alva Braziel last summer. We will continue to be open to the possibility of other changes that are in line with best practices and our desire for open and transparent law enforcement.”

The KHOU docu-series also explored best practices related to body camera use in other cities such as Austin, TX with the automatic activation of the camera when you exit the car; and frequent auditing procedures used by Ft. Worth, TX, New Orleans, LA and Denver, CO. to evaluate if the cameras are being used properly.

“We hope it will open the eyes of city leaders and be a catalyst for change. It’s why we are offering a Call-to-Action on BodycamTransparency.com, where citizens can demand more transparency with HPD’s program,” stated Rogalski. “We will take those petitions straight to city hall and hope the mayor will read them, listen to the people, and take action.”

The group, which is one of the largest KKK chapters in the country, states on their website they believe Trump’s campaign “united my people.” While the President-elect claims he rejects any form of support from the white supremacist hate group, many of his offensive, racist, discriminatory comments and proposed policies indicate otherwise…..GEORGE ZIMMERMAN USING RACIAL SLUR AFTER BEING KICKED OUT OF A CIGAR BAR. Authorities were asked to come to Corona Cigar Co. outside Orlando for a different incident, but while the officer was there, the manager said that staff asked the officer to remove Zimmerman for yelling at a waitress. An employee claimed that Zimmerman ripped a credit card from her hand when she was trying to collect a bill, and when he was being escorted out, he could be heard to say, “I didn’t know you were a (racial expletive) lover.”

n the campaign trail Donald Trump’s slogan for African-Americans has been, “What do you have to lose?” It’s the mantra he repeated over and over again while proclaiming that Black people live in poverty in neighborhoods that are more dangerous than war zones. According to the now president-elect, Black people have horrible educations and are jobless while living in squalor. Now, he’s pushing what he calls “a new deal for Black America,” a ten-point plan that he sent to Mediatakeout. com, which he thinks will help turn Black communities around.

1. Great Education Through School Choice. We will allow every disadvantaged child in America to attend the public, private, charter, magnet, religious or home school of their choice.

School choice is the great civil rights issue of our time. We will also ensure funding for Historic Black Colleges and Universities, more affordable two and four-year college, and support for trade and vocational education.

2. Safe Communities. We will make our communities safe again. Every poor African-American child must be able to walk down the street in peace. Safety is a civil right. We will invest in training and funding both local and federal law enforcement operations to remove the gang members, drug dealers, and criminal cartels from our neighborhoods.

3. Equal Justice Under the Law. We will apply the law fairly, equally and without prejudice. There will be only one set of rules – not a two-tiered system of justice.

Equal justice also means the same rules for Wall Street.

4. Tax Reforms to Create Jobs and Lift up People and Commu-

nities. We will lower the business tax from 35 percent to 15 percent and bring thousands of new companies to our shores. We will also have a massive middle-class tax cut, tax-free childcare savings accounts, and childcare tax deductions and credits. We will also have tax holidays for inner-city investment, and new tax incentives to get foreign companies to relocate in blighted American neighborhoods.

5. Financial Reforms to Expand Credit to Support New Job Creation. We will have financial reforms to make it easier for young African-Americans to get credit to pursue their dreams in business and create jobs in their communities.

Dodd-Frank has been a disaster, making it harder for small businesses to get the credit they need.

6. Trade That Works for American Workers. We will stop the massive, chronic trade deficits that have emptied out our jobs.

We will stop the offshoring of companies to low-wage countries and raise wages at home—meaning rent and bills become instantly more affordable. We will tell executives that if they move their factories to Mexico or other countries, we will put a 35 percent tax on their product before they ship it back into the U.S.

7. Protection from Illegal Immigration. No group has been more economically-harmed by decades of illegal immigration than low-income African-American workers. We will reform visa rules to give American workers preference for jobs, and we will suspend reckless refugee admissions from terror-prone regions that cost taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars. We will use a portion of the money saved by enforcing our laws, and suspending refugees, to re-invested in our inner cities.

8. New Infrastructure Investment. We will leverage public-private partnerships, and private investments through tax incentives, to spur $1 trillion in infrastructure investment over 10 years, of which the inner cities will be a major beneficiary. This will save $100 billion over eight years. We will use these to help rebuild the vital infrastructure in America’s inner cities.

9. Protect the African-American Church. We will protect religious liberty, promote strong families, and support the AfricanAmerican church.

10. America First Foreign Policy.

We will stop trying to build Democracies overseas, wasting trillions, but focus on defeating terrorists and putting America First.

Trump won, but white supremacy won’t

began election night with exuberance. I was among the many who forecast a Hillary win. The only disagreement among my circle was how big the Hillary rout would be. I thought she’d get at least 300 electoral college votes, and hoped that she’d thump Trump by getting as many as 340, holding him to less than 200 electoral college votes. The tables were turned and Trump was the one doing the thumping, with the electoral vote count estimated to be 290-228 (at this writing, final counts were not in).

Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton won the popular vote, garnering around 600,000 more votes than Donald Trump.

White folks won the day for Trump in an amazing showing of white solidarity. Trump took 58 percent of the white vote, but did not get a majority vote from any other racial/ethnic group. Only eight percent of African Americans voted for Trump. He did better among Asian-Americans (29 percent) and Hispanics (nearly 30 percent). White people repudiated Hillary Clinton and embraced Trump as one of their own, despite his racist, misogynistic, and jingoistic rhetoric.

Hillary Clinton counted on white women, especially college-educated white women, to save the day.

Clearly, they were not with her. According to Edison Research exit polls, Trump won 45 percent of collegeeducated white women and 62 percent of white women non-college graduates. Trump won 53 percent of the total white female vote. The college-educated white women’s narrow vote for Clinton did not overcome the overwhelming support other whites gave him. White women valued culture and class over gender. Many of them are the mothers, daughters, sisters or wives of the white men who gave Trump 63 percent of their vote.

Hillary Clinton failed to energize the base, or transcend the indifference that too many voters felt for her. Turnout was only 56.8 percent, just one percent higher than 2012, and lower than the 58.2 percent turnout in 2008. More than 95 million people who were eligible to vote didn’t show up to the polls.

The Republican vote was similar for Trump and for Mitt Romney, the last Republican Presidential nominee. Democrats turned out in much lower numbers for Clinton than they did for Obama. Why? Voter suppression is part of the answer. There were nearly 900 fewer voting places in 2016 than in 2012. Further, states like Wisconsin, which Hillary lost by less than a percentage point, introduced new voter ID laws between 2012 and 2016. Clinton lost

by less than two percent of the vote in Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Florida.

People of color were more likely to be affected by voter suppression measures than whites. In Durham, North Carolina, voting machines weren’t working, and a judge ruled to keep the polls open longer to compensate for the broken machines. Clinton lost North Carolina by less than four percent. How many more might have voted, but for broken machines and other chicanery? How many spent hours in line, and how many had to leave lines because they had to go to work?

Hillary Clinton ended her campaign with more than $50 million in the bank! Might some of that money have made a difference in energizing the base? Could more people have been put on payroll as organizers in battleground states, especially North Carolina and Pennsylvania? Should grassroots organizers have received more resources? Lots of fingers can be pointed in this post-election analysis, but analysis notwithstanding, Trump won. It hurts to write that reality down, but it is a reality we will all have to grapple with for four years.

Part of the ugly reality is the realization that too many of our fellow citizens have embraced a racially divisive candidate whose rhetoric has unleashed hateful speech and attitudes.

Donald Trump was able to tap into the angst that too many whites felt during the Obama presidency, and he was able to win the presidency in the name of JOHN COLE, NCPOLICYWATCH.COM white solidarity and white supremacy. It seems incongruous that a rich, privileged, urban businessman should become the voice of the working class disgruntled, the rural neglected (Trump got 62 percent of the rural vote), and white women. But this is the new reality: the triumph of white privilege and hate rhetoric.

Whites are just 40 percent of the population in California, a state that gave Hillary Clinton 61.5 percent of its vote. And the Census reports that by 2044 there will be no majority group in our nation. White folks might as well enjoy Trump while they can, but time and demographics are on our side.

White supremacy won’t reign forever.

Ruth Negga: THE 'LOVING' INTERVIEW

uth Negga’s body of work spans awardwinning theatre productions, big-screen dramas, independent films, and innovative television series. The former star of the hit show "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," she currently co-stars as Tulip O’Hare in the AMC series, “Preacher,” an adaptation of the DC Comics graphic novel of the same name.

Here, Ruth talks about her latest outing as Mildred Loving in “Loving,” the biopic/courtroom drama about the couple who took their challenge of the State of Virginia’s law against interracial marriage all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Kam Williams: What attracted you to "Loving?"

Ruth Negga: I basically fell in love with Mildred and Richard (the main characters). I thought they were an extraordinary couple whose love just seemed so apparent. To be honest with you, (writer/director Jeff Nichol’s) script was such a beautiful reflection of these human beings that I really wanted to spend time with them.

KW: This is a very intimate film, with a quiet chemistry generated between you and Joel via looks and tender touches. Had you two worked together before? How long did you get to rehearse with each other?

RN: Well, Jeff doesn’t rehearse. He casts quite

instinctively. In this case, I think he knew he was casting two actors who would be willing to work very hard. I did audition for him, and I think he was impressed with the extent to which I’d prepared for that. The thing is, he wanted people who could embody this couple, not mimic them.

He’d previously worked with Joel in “Midnight Special,” so he’d already witnessed Joel’s ability to disappear into a character. And that was a very American part, too. I believe Jeff just trusted us both as actors to do our jobs individually. And we both professed such love for this couple that he was confident that we’d try as hard as possible to recreate their love and their chemistry. He also knew, intrinsically, that we were two actors who don’t act in isolation but very much rely on other actors. And Joel and I both very much felt that this was something that we could do as an ensemble.

KW: What message do you think people will take away from the film?

RN: I don’t know what people will take away from the film, but I would hope they take away the idea that it’s very important that we don’t forget those in history who might have been quiet agitators, people who might have changed the world in a way which was unexpected. And that should remind us that we all have the capacity to do that. Even if you think that you don’t, this couple proves otherwise.

‘Almost Christmas’ hopes to make holiday magic Defender News Service

reators of the new film “Almost Christmas” hope it becomes part of the staple of beloved holiday movies. And it looks like it may well be on its way after a surprising opening weekend at the box office. The movie, featuring an all-star cast, came in at the top of its projections, raking in $16 million.

“After the election, I think people need this movie,” said producer Will Packer, who also produced blockbusters like “Ride Along” and “Straight Outta Compton.”

The cast includes Danny Glover, Omar Epps, Gabrielle Union, Kimberly Elise, JB Smoove, Nicole Ari Parker,

Keri Hilson and Academy Award winner Mo’Nique. The movie centers around a family who must come together and heal old wounds after the death of its matriarch.

Epps said the Christmas season offers rich opportunities for storytelling.

“Christmas is one of those holidays when you might not have seen a person for a year,” the former “House” star said. “A good film has to tackle all of that emotion and still bring it back around to the warmth and love of the holidays.”

For Epps, “the genius” of the script was how it “flipped the usual storyline for something like this. Normally, it’s the patriarch who passes, and it’s the mother who holds it all together.

Here the roles are reversed, and we quickly see it was the mother who knew all the kids’ secrets and understood what it took to keep everything on an even keel.”

As for Glover, “Danny is such a legend and he brings great gravitas to this role,” Epps said. “But it’s him that’s trying to keep his sanity while the kids are squabbling and all that.

Ironically, he’s the one they should be catering to — and not the other way around.”

Singer/actress Keri Hilson said the movie is also about tradition, which the film comically and realistically captures.

The digestive system plays a crucial role in your body’s overall function. It is made up of the gastrointestinal tract (GI), liver, pancreas and gallbladder, and helps the body digest food. Digestion is important for breaking down food into nutrients, which your body uses for energy, growth and cell repair. Here are 10 things to know from the National Institutes of Health, a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The GI tract is a series of hollow organs joined in a long, twisting tube from the mouth to the anus. The hollow organs that make up the GI tract are the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine – which includes the rectum – and anus. Food enters the mouth and passes to the anus through the hollow organs of the GI tract. The liver, pancreas and gallbladder are the solid organs of the digestive system.

Bacteria in the GI tract, also called gut flora or microbiome, helps with digestion.

Parts of the nervous and circulatory systems also play roles in the digestive process. Together, a combination of nerves, hormones, bacteria, blood, and the organs of the digestive system completes the complex task of digesting the foods and liquids a person consumes each day.

Digestion begins in the mouth with chewing and ends in the small intestine. As food passes through the GI tract, it mixes with digestive juices, causing large molecules of food to break down into smaller molecules. The body then absorbs these smaller molecules through the walls of the small intestine into the bloodstream, which delivers them to the rest of the body.

The body breaks down nutrients from food and drink into carbohydrates, protein, fats, and vitamins. Carbohydrates are the sugars, starches, and fiber found in many foods. Carbohydrates are called simple or complex, depending on their chemical struc-

ture. Simple carbohydrates include sugars found naturally in foods such as fruits, vegetables, milk, and milk products, as well as sugars added during food processing. Complex carbohydrates are starches and fiber found in whole-grain breads and cereals, starchy vegetables, and legumes.

Foods such as meat, eggs and beans consist of large molecules of protein that the body digests into smaller molecules called amino acids. The body absorbs amino acids through the small intestine into the blood.

Fat molecules are a rich source of energy for the body and help the body absorb vitamins. Oils such as corn, canola, olive, safflower, soybean, and sunflower are examples of healthy fats. Butter, shortening and snack foods are examples of less healthy fats.

Vitamins are classified by the fluid in which they dissolve.

Water-soluble vitamins include all the B vitamins and vitamin C. Fat-soluble vitamins include vitamins A, D, E, and K. Each vitamin has a different role in the body’s growth and health. The body stores fat-soluble vitamins in the liver and fatty tissues, whereas the body does not easily store water-soluble vitamins and flushes out the extra in the urine.

When a person swallows, food pushes into the esophagus, the muscular tube that carries food and liquids from the mouth to the stomach. Once swallowing begins, it becomes involuntary

and proceeds under the control of the esophagus and brain. The lower esophageal sphincter, a ringlike muscle at the junction of the esophagus and stomach, controls the passage of food and liquid between the esophagus and stomach.

The stomach stores swallowed food and liquid, mixes the food and liquid with digestive juice it produces, and slowly empties its contents, called chyme, into the small intestine. The muscle of the upper part of the stomach relaxes to accept large volumes of swallowed material from the esophagus. The muscle of the lower part of the stomach mixes the food and liquid with digestive juice.

The muscles of the small intestine mix food with digestive juices from the pancreas, liver, and intestine and push the mixture forward to help with further digestion. The waste products of the digestive process include undigested parts of food and older cells from the GI tract lining. Muscles push these waste products into the large intestine.

The large intestine absorbs water and any remaining nutrients and changes the waste from liquid into stool. The rectum stores stool until it pushes it out of the body during a bowel movement.

Tummy aches: What parents should know

hough most children have abdominal pain at one time or another, hearing a child’s tiny voice saying “My tummy hurts” can prompt parental anxiety. Some children with stomach pains may feel better within hours or days without special treatment and often no cause can be found.

In other cases, if pain prevails, parents should consider taking their children to the doctor or an emergency room. The Defender spoke with Dr. Stan Spinner, chief medical officer at Texas Children’s Pediatrics and Texas Children’s Urgent Care about the common causes of tummy trouble and what parents should do when they occur.

Defender: Why are tummy aches a common issue with kids?

Spinner: Abdominal pain is one of the most common complaints in childhood due to the fact that the pain may be caused by so many conditions.

Many of these conditions affect children more often than adults.

Defender: In what ways does physical pain in the stomach area affect children differently from adults?

Spinner: Younger children do not localize the pain nearly as well as adolescents or adults. Children also may respond to pain differently from adults. A good example of this is ap-

pendicitis. Whereas an adult will suffer abdominal pain relatively early into the course, a young child may experience no abdominal pain until much later in the course. In some cases, the first symptom in a young child will be fever rather the pain.

Defender: What are the causes, signs and symptoms of abdominal pain in children?

Spinner: The cause of abdominal pain is typically a self-limited minor condition, such as: gas, food allergy or intolerance, heartburn or acid reflux, stomach flu or food poisoning, strep

throat, anxiety, constipation, gastroenteritis, and or viral syndrome. Another common cause is “functional pain.”

This kind of pain occurs due to what is considered alterations not due to any physical abnormality. Typically, this kind of pain has been associated with a “nervous stomach” or wanting attention. Abdominal pain may also be associated with pneumonia, urinary tract infections and throat infections.

Defender: When should parents contact a healthcare provider?

Spinner: Signs and symptoms associated with abdominal pain that

should prompt attention are when the pain is associated with fever, persistent vomiting, blood in the stool or jelly-like appearance to the stool, or followed by trauma. Persistent or increasing intensity of the pain should also be considered for attention. Pain associated with other symptoms, such a painful or difficulty urination, rashes, severe cough or shortness of breath, may also be warning signs that you need to contact a health care provider.

Defender: What kinds of homecare remedies could parents use for children to feel better?

Spinner: Medications typically offer little, if any help, and may actually worsen the situation in many cases. Safe and sometimes effective remedies include a heating pad or warm bath, which may be helpful to dissipate gas in the abdomen. Offering small amounts of an electrolyte solution and temporarily avoiding solid foods when the pain is associated with vomiting may allow faster healing due to infections such as viral gastroenteritis (stomach bug). If constipation is suspected, increasing fluids and fiber, while minimizing starchy foods may be helpful. The best bet is to avoid most of the over-the-counter upset stomach remedies, as they are usually ineffective, and may often aggravate the condition.

When in doubt, contact your physician or have your child evaluated at an appropriate pediatric healthcare facility.

Common gastrointestinal disorders

rom heartburn to gas to constipation, many of us experience gastrointestinal problems on a regular basis. It’s estimated that each year, Americans spend more than $700 million on laxatives alone.

In addition to being painful or uncomfortable, certain disorders can be humiliating.

“Some people find themselves burping incessantly or passing gas and that concerns them,” said Dr. Krishnamurthy Shivshanker, a gastroenterologist affiliated with Memorial Hermann Southwest.

“For one thing, it’s embarrassing when they’re in public.”

In many cases, healthy lifestyle habits can lessen digestive disorders. Here are facts about common disorders from Shivshanker and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

HEARTBURN/REFLUX Also called acid reflux, heartburn is a burning sensation that occurs when stomach contents back up into the esophagus. Shivshanker said symptoms can be reduced by avoiding certain foods and beverages, such as fatty or fried foods, spicy foods, citrus, coffee and other caffeinated beverages.

The NIH recommends not overeating, not eating two to three hours before bedtime, losing weight if you’re overweight or obese and not smoking. Symptoms can be relieved with over-the-counter (OTC) medicines such as antacids and H2 blockers, which decrease acid production. As with all disorders, see your doctor if symptoms get worse or persist.

African-Americans, Native Americans, Hispanics and Asian-Americans are more likely to be lactose intolerant than whites, and Shivshanker said the reason is unknown. Symptoms include bloating, diarrhea, gas or nausea after consuming milk or milk products.

Different people can tolerate different amounts of lactose. Some people can eat yogurt or cheese, for example, but cannot drink milk. Talk with your doctor about a dietary plan. You can also try lactose-free and lactose-reduced milk products or lactase tablets and drops.

CONSTIPATION

GAS Gas is air in the digestive tract that leaves your body through your mouth when you burp or through your anus when you pass gas. Other symptoms include bloating and pain in the abdomen. Shivshanker said gas comes from swallowed air and the breakdown of certain undigested foods. The unpleasant odor of flatulence comes from bacteria in the large intestine that release small amounts of gases that contain sulfur.

Foods and drinks that cause gas include beans, broccoli, cabbage, milk products and sugar-free products. To reduce symptoms, try swallowing less air by eating slower and avoiding gum and hard candies.

Eat smaller, more frequent meals and eat less of the foods that give you gas. Some OTC medicines may reduce gas or symptoms.

LACTOSE INTOLERANCE Lactose Intolerance is the inability to digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and milk products.

According to NIH, constipation is a condition in which you have fewer than three bowel movements a week, or hard, dry and small bowel movements that are painful or difficult to pass. Shivshanker stressed that “normal” bowel movements vary from person to person, and could be two times a day or every two days. ”It is not medically required to have a bowel movement every day,” he said. “The pattern is the most important thing in a particular individual.”

He said ways to combat constipation include drinking plenty of plain water throughout the day and eating a significant amount of green vegetables and other fiber-rich foods. The NIH recommends avoiding cheese, chips, fast food, ice cream, meat and processed foods.

Shivshanker said beware of overusing laxatives, which could cause the colon to become dependent on them for normal functioning. He also warns against using colon cleansers and colonics, “which can wipe out all the good bacteria and make the colon start depending on a cleansing agent.”

IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME IBS is a group of symptoms that occur together, including pain or discomfort in the abdomen and changes in bowel movement patterns. Health experts aren’t sure what causes IBS but it is believed that faulty communication between the brain and the intestinal tract is one cause of symptoms. Other causes could include pain or food sensitivity, genetics or infection. Some mental health problems are common in people with IBS. A doctor may be able to diagnose IBS based on a review of symptoms, which can be treated with a combination of diet, medicines, probiotics (live bacteria and yeasts that are good for the digestive system) and therapies for mental health problems.

DIARRHEA Diarrhea is characterized by frequent, watery and loose bowel movements. Other symptoms include abdominal pain and an urgent need to use the bathroom. According to NIH, causes include viruses, bacteria, parasites, certain medicines and problems digesting certain foods.

See a doctor if diarrhea lasts more than 24 hours in a child and two days in an adult, or if there are signs of dehydration, a fever, severe pain the abdomen or rectum, stools that are black and tarry, or stools that contain pus or blood. Shivshanker added that diarrhea is of greater concern in babies and children who become dehydrated easier than adults.

Drink water and fluids with sodium, chloride and potassium. Eat bland foods such as bananas, plain rice, toast or crackers.

Colds versus allergies

By DR. KAREN TUANO Pediatric Allergy & Immunologist Texas Children’s Hospital ches and pain. Sniffles. Sneezing. Sore throat. Are these the terms that describe a cold or allergies? Knowing the difference between the two is important to decide what to do and how to treat the symptoms.

The similarities between these two often lead to confusion about which your child is suffering from. One can easily mistake an allergy for a cold, or vice versa. If untreated, they can lead to headaches or other secondary infections such as sinusitis or ear infections.

Colds A cold is commonly caused by a virus.

You can get a cold from another person who has the virus, even though you may be in good health. This happens when you breathe in germs or come in direct contact with the infected person.

• Usually with fever, aches or a sore throat • Symptoms last for a few days To prevent yourself from getting a cold, frequently wash your hands, use a disinfectant on any contaminated surface and be careful when sneezing and coughing around others.

The recommended course of action for curing a cold is to let it run its

course. Get adequate rest, drink lots of fluids and eat nutritiously.

Over-the-counter medications, like acetaminophen, oral decongestant or nasal saline, will help to alleviate the symptoms, but they will not stop the cold process – only our immune system can do that over time.

Allergies

Allergies occur as a reaction to an exposure to an allergen. Symptoms occur when the allergen is in the air.

• Your child’s eyes may become itchy, watery and red • Frequent sneezing and itchy nose • Symptoms last until the season is over, or when the allergen disappear

Common allergens include pollen, dust mites, animal dander, molds and cockroaches. If you are unsure of what you may be allergic to, talk to your doctor about testing that can identify them for you.

Although the symptoms are similar to a common cold, allergies are not

contagious. If you have fever or an achy body, it is most likely a cold, not allergies.

There are treatments for allergy conditions, including: • Prescription or over-the-counter antihistamines to reduce allergy symptoms • Allergy shots or immunotherapy, which reduces your allergy sensitivity to the allergens

Include more fruits, vegetables in your child’s diet

They are also full of dietary fiber, which helps regulate bowel function and provides fullness with fewer calories. More than that, when eaten as part of an overall healthy diet, fruits and vegetables reduce the risk for chronic diseases.

Get your kids involved • Children are more likely to eat foods they have helped choose or prepare, so why not make it a fun family activity?

• Take your kids to the grocery store or local farmers market and have them pick out a new fruit or vegetable.

• Allow them to help you make the recipe (how much help may depend on their age).

Make it fun and get creative!

• Use cookie cutters to make fun shapes out of fruits such as watermelon or cantaloupe!

• Add a handful of spinach to a fruit smoothie that contains blueberries (to mask the green color) for some extra nutrients and no added taste. You can even pour your mixture into an ice tray and freeze it to make smoothie cubes

for a hot day.

• Cut up celery stalk, fill the inside crest with peanut butter or your nut butter of choice, and add raisins on top to make “ants on a log.”

• Dip vegetables in hummus or Greek yogurtbased ranch to enhance the flavor.

Make it available and set an example • Cut up fruits and vegetables and place them in a clear plastic container at the front of the fridge for easy access and reach.

• Repeatedly expose your child to new food without pressure of any kind. It may take up to 15 presentations of a food before a child is willing to eat it.

• Be a good role model. Eat your own fruits and vegetables and your child will likely do the same.

After all, children learn from what they see.

Clearing up the facts about colonosc

A

colonoscopy is a screening test to detect and prevent colon cancer. In a Q&A with the Defender, Sahil Mittal, M.D., M.S., a gastroenterologist at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, discussed the procedure.

Defender: What does a colonoscopy involve?

Mittal: The test involves the examination of the entire colon and rectum with a colonoscope, a thin, flexible, lighted tube with a small video camera on the end. Prior to the exam, the colon must be empty and clean so the doctor can examine the inside lining of colon. Most commonly, clearing the colon involves drinking a liquid

laxative the evening before and the morning of the procedure.

The test itself usually takes about 30 minutes, but it may take longer if a polyp is found and removed. The test is done under sedation to make you feel relaxed and sleepy during the procedure and most people are unable to remember the procedure afterwards. Colonoscopy is safe with low risk of complications.

Defender: How effective is the procedure?

Mittal: Colonoscopy is the most effective of all available methods to help prevent colon cancer. It serves a dual goal of detecting cancer at early stage and also identifying precancerous lesions known as colon polyps. In comparison,

stool-based tests primarily detect colon cancer.

CT colonography (or a virtual colonoscopy) and barium enema can also detect colon polyps but a positive test needs to be followed up with a colonoscopy for removal of colon polyps.

Thus colonoscopy is the most comprehensive preventive test as it can detect both cancer and its precursor lesion i.e. colon polyps and also provides an opportunity to remove these colon polyps in a single procedure.

Defender: Who should have a colonoscopy and how often?

Mittal: Everyone above the age of 50 years needs a colonoscopy. People with family history of colon cancer may need a colonoscopy sooner

Prevention/Treatment: Get a colonoscopy beginning at age 50. Treatment depends upon the stage. With some early-stage disease, surgery alone may be the treatment of choice. With more advanced cancer, surgery plus chemotherapy is needed.

ESOPHAGEAL CANCER Carcinoma/Squamous Men are affected twice as commonly as women. Squamous cell esophageal cancer is more common in African-Americans than Caucasians.

Causes: The exact cause is unknown. Risk factors are alcohol, smoking, acid reflux and obesity.

Symptoms: Very small tumors at an early stage don’t generally cause symptoms. Patients commonly experience difficulty swallowing as the tumor gets larger. Other symptoms include indigestion, heartburn, vomiting, choking, coughing and hoarseness.

Prevention/Treatment: Depending on the stage of cancer, the patient may undergo surgery, radiation and/or chemotherapy. Other measures to improve symptoms include stretching or dilation, tube prosthesis (stent) and radiation or laser treatment to reduce the size of the cancer.

Prevention/Treatment: There is no sure way to prevent this cancer. Ways to lower your risk include diet, good nutrition, healthy body weight and physical activity. Treatment plans vary depending on the size, location, extent of tumor and the patient’s overall health. Treatments include surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy.

LIVER CANCER Hepatocellular carcinoma

HCC is the most common form of liver cancer in adults.

Causes: Individuals with the hepatitis B or hepatitis C virus infection are at increased risk of developing HCC. Alcohol-related liver disease is also a risk factor.

Symptoms: Abdominal pain is the most common symptom. Unexplained weight loss or unexplained fevers, sudden appearance of abdominal swelling, yellow discoloration of the eyes and skin

(jaundice) or muscle wasting suggests the possibility of HCC. Prevention/Treatment: Lower your risk with a healthy diet, regular exercise, controlled weight and limited amounts of alcohol. Liver transplantation is a treatment option for patients with end-stage liver disease and small HCC. There is, however, a severe shortage of donors in the U.S. Treatments include surgery, chemotherapy and/ or ablation therapy.

PANCREATIC CANCER Blacks are slightly more likely to develop pancreatic cancer than whites.

Causes: There is no clear cause. Risk factors include smoking, alcohol consumption, a diet rich in animal fat and a condition called hereditary pancreatitis.

Symptoms: Early pancreatic cancer usually does not cause symptoms and is known as a “silent” disease. As the tumor gets larger, the patient may have abdominal pain, nausea, jaundice, decreased appetite and/or weight loss.

Prevention/Treatment: Cancer of the pancreas is only curable if it is found in its early stages. Surgery, radiation and chemotherapy are possible treatment options. Pain control may be difficult. Oral pain medication is generally prescribed.

Colorectal cancer myths Myth: Colorectal cancer is a man’s disease.

Truth: Colorectal cancer is almost as common among women as men. Each year in the U.S., about 71,000 men and 64,000 women are diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

Myth: It’s better not to get tested for colorectal cancer because it’s deadly anyway.

Truth: Colorectal cancer is often highly treatable. If it’s found and treated early (while it’s small and before it has spread), the five-year relative survival rate is about 90 percent.

Myth: Colorectal cancer cannot be prevented.

Truth: In many cases, colorectal cancer can be prevented. Colorectal cancer almost always starts with a polyp. If the polyp is found early, it can be removed—

stopping colorectal cancer before it starts.

Other ways to help lower your chances of getting colorectal cancer include: • Maintain a healthy weight throughout life; stay lean without being underweight.

• Be physically active; limit the time you spend sitting, lying down and watching TV. • Eat at least 2½ cups of vegetables and fruits each day.

• Choose whole grains over refined grain products.

• Limit the amount of red meat and processed meat you eat.

• If you drink alcohol, limit the amount to one drink per day for women, two per day for men.

• Don’t use tobacco in any form.

It was her dream to compete in an IRONMAN triathlon

Not even a cancer diagnosis could keep Claire Cormier Thielke from pursuing her lifelong goals with a passion

or as long as she can remember, it was Claire’s dream to compete in an IRONMAN triathlon.

The grueling triathlon consisting of a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile run was right up her alley—she ran for Stanford University and even joined the USA Track & Field professional circuit after graduation.

But in 2012, Claire was preparing for the London Olympics when a routine performance check revealed a thyroid tumor.

She stared at the X-rays, completely perplexed. The thyroid tumor had displaced her windpipe.

Finding hope and reassurance at MD Anderson Cancer Center “When I’m asked about my journey with MD Anderson, I’m immediately taken back to a sunny, windy day on the roads of Cozumel, Mexico. In many ways, this was where my journey as an MD Anderson patient ended and my new life as an advocate began.

“I was confused, bewildered and

frightened by my thyroid cancer diagnosis.

We laid my grandmother to rest just three weeks earlier. She’d been a patient at MD Anderson and died of anaplastic thyroid cancer, an incurable form of the disease.

“While my grandmother was a patient, I developed a true appreciation for the impeccable research programs at MD Anderson.

We knew how her story would end, but it gave us a real sense of comfort that she was being treated there because her case could contribute to research to one day find a cure for anaplastic thyroid cancer.

“I never thought twice about going to MD Anderson to have my thyroid tumor removed. I am so blessed that Gary Clayman, D.M.D., M.D., was my doctor. He provided care for my grandmother, and his bedside manner blew me away throughout her treatment. An avid runner himself, Dr. Clayman understood I didn’t just want to be better; I wanted to be back racing. Sharing this love of running with him made me feel so lucky.”

Athlete and advocate

By December 2013, there seemed no better way to celebrate and test herself than by taking on an item from her bucket list – the Cozumel IRONMAN. If Claire

could make it through that race, then she could prove to herself that she was still the same person.

“So there I was – just me, the water, the roads and the Mexican sunshine. Of all the finish lines I’ve crossed in my running career, this was the most special. When you get to that finish line, whether it’s at the end of an IRONMAN or the end of your cancer journey, you barely remember all of the stuff you’ve been through. Yet, you know it must have happened because otherwise getting there wouldn’t feel so good. I literally cartwheeled across the tape, keenly aware of just how far I’d come in the past year and a half.

“Now, I’m not waiting to check things off my bucket list. And it’s grown significantly. Part of my personal mission as a member of MD Anderson’s Advance Team (a volunteer leadership board of ‘next generation’ community and business leaders) is to raise funds for the institution so that a cure can be a reality for future patients.

“I hope that in this small way, I can help in Making Cancer History®, just as MD Anderson has done for me.”

Five ways to persuade a picky eater

or parents with a picky eater, it may seem that no amount of coaxing or prodding will get that little mouth in motion. A fresh approach may be all you need to make meal time a more enjoyable experience for all. Proper nourishment is essential for a child’s development, so when a battle of wills erupts over food, it can leave parents feeling especially frustrated and concerned about their child’s well-being. Fortunately, there are several strategies you can adapt to get meal time on track and healthy eating habits underway.

Make a one-bite rule. Not everyone likes everything when it comes to food. Allow your child a sense of control in making decisions about the foods he or she likes or dislikes. When offering new items, implement a rule that requires trying at least one bite.

Then, if he or she declines more, set it aside and focus on the other foods you are offering. Remember, tastes change over time—even day to day for some kids—so don’t be afraid to try again in the future.

Offer a fun incentive. Make meal time an interactive experience with tableware that makes eating fun. Dinner Winner, by specialty giftware company Fred, is an award-winning kid’s dinner tray divided into small sections like a board game, where parents can portion out food into manageable bites along the path.

The goal is to get to the finish line where a special covered treat awaits, providing motivation for children to eat their entire meal.

Keep it simple. In an effort to entice kids to eat, some wellintentioned parents offer too many choices, which can be overwhelming. Instead, limit the options and let them pick from two meal options, such as a turkey sandwich or a peanut butter and jelly.

Approach meals like building blocks. Think of each meal as a tower of blocks you’re teaching your child to stack. The bottom piece, the sturdy foundation, is a familiar food he or

she willingly accepts like chicken or noodles. Then layer on additional pieces, such as adding a sauce with pureed veggies or a new protein.

Create a sense of ownership. Kids are more likely to eat when they can take pride in the fruits of their labor.

Lower the risks of contracting food poisoning

F

ood poisoning—also called foodborne illness—is a common but preventable health problem. According to the CDC, each year, 1 in 6 Americans gets sick by consuming contaminated foods or beverages.

You can get food poisoning after eating food that has been contaminated with germs (bacteria, viruses or parasites) or toxic substances (molds or contaminants).

The most common symptoms of food poisoning are upset stomach, abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, fever and dehydration.

Severe cases can cause long-term health

poisoning include children under age 5, pregnant women, adults over 65, and people with weak immune systems.

The treatment for most foodborne illnesses is replacing lost fluids and electrolytes to prevent dehydration. Certain over-the-counter medications may help stop diarrhea in adults.

• Keep your refrigerator below 40°F and refrigerate foods properly. Germs can grow in many foods within two hours unless you refrigerate them.

Game-changing HIV prevention drug PrEP now available

he disappearance of HIV/AIDS from national headlines has not slowed down its ravaging affects upon communities of color. Enter PrEP, a potential game-changing drug that seeks to drastically reduce HIV infection rates—in some cases, up to 92 percent.

The drug—PrEP or pre-exposure prophylaxis— is being targeted to people who are HIV-negative but at very high risk for HIV. A large proportion of these individuals are Black; and more specifically, Black men who have sex with other men (MSM), Black women, and Black teens.

“PrEP is a proven prevention tool that if used consistently and correctly, can prevent acquisition of HIV by over 92 percent, regardless of gender or race and ethnicity,” said Marlene McNeese, bureau chief of HIV/STD & Viral Hepatitis for the Houston Health Department. “Rates of new HIV infections among Black women can decrease over time if more women would use this prevention method if appropriate for them.”

According to the AIDS Foundation Houston website (www.aidshelp.org) there are 1.2 million people living with HIV in the United States, with one in five unaware of their infection. PrEP was devised to treat those who are currently not infected, but who are considered at risk of being added to this list. AIDS Foundation Houston reports that though Blacks make up only 13.6 percent of the U.S. population, they account for over half of all new HIV/AIDS cases and 44 percent of new infections.

This is a critical issue for Houston’s Black residents. According to a Houston Health Department study with data gathered up to June 30, 2016, Blacks make up 51 percent of the reported adult HIV cases in the Houston/ Harris County area, compared to 19 percent for whites and 26 percent for Hispanics. Moreover, regarding Houston area males, Black non-Hispanics lead the way in HIV cases with 45 percent (whites, 22 percent; Hispanics, 30 percent). And for Houston’s Black women, the numbers are even more starling, as they are 71 percent of all area females with HIV/ AIDS (whites, 9 percent; Hispanics 17 percent).

Though PrEP has only recently been made

available to the public, it has been in the prevention pipeline since July 2012.

Some medication-leery individuals raise concerns about PrEP’s affordability, especially since the drug is expected to be taken daily. PrEP, however, is currently covered by most major insurance carriers. For persons without insurance there are payment assistance programs through the manufacturer that can support most if not all of the costs for the drug.

McNeese said some individuals may still need to pay out of pocket for laboratory costs, and any copays that may be required, and conceded that the market cost of Truvada© is considerable—over $1,000.00 per month. But McNeese believes that for individuals with insurance, PrEP can be affordable.

“Any Houstonian can receive a prescription today from their medical care provider for Truvada©, the only current drug approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) for PrEP. In addition, there are a number of health care providers in the Houston area also currently of-

fering PrEP to individuals who are interested in using it as a tool to prevent HIV infection.

Others question why PrEP is being so heavily marketed in communities of color. McNeese clarified that PrEP is being targeted to all sexually active, 18 and older individuals who have a partner with an unknown HIV status or a partner who is living with HIV. “Communities of color are at higher risk for HIV infection in Houston so current marketing efforts are targeted to ensure that these communities are aware that this prevention tool exists,” stated McNeese.

Surprisingly to some, teens are the age group of Houston/Harris County residents with the most new HIV cases annually. And again, Black people are hit hardest. The number of 15-24 year old African Americans newly diagnosed in 2014 for every white of the same age was 7.62. However, Truvada© as PrEP is not currently approved for use in persons younger than 18 years of age.

What you should know about lupus

By ANITA UDAYAMURTHY, M.D. Kelsey-Seybold Clinic Lupus is a chronic inflammatory disease in which the body becomes self-destructive. It is an autoimmune disease, meaning it occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks its own healthy tissues and organs.

This could cause external as well as internal inflammation and damage many different body parts such as the joints, skin, kidneys, heart, lungs, blood vessels and brain.

The Lupus Foundation of America estimates that about 1.5 million Americans suffer from some form of lupus.

There are several types, but the most common is systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), which makes up about 70 percent of all cases.

In about half of the reported cases of SLE, a major organ like the heart, lungs, kidneys or brain is affected.

How it could affect you

The definitive cause of lupus is unknown, but while it could be triggered by a number of factors, research indicates that genetics may be a major determinant.

Anyone at any age can get lupus, although women between the ages of 15 to 44 Dr. Anita Udayamurthy are most at risk —particularly African- American women.

A recent report issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicated that lupusrelated deaths increased over a period of 20 years, especially among AfricanAmerican women ages 45 to 64.

run in families, so family history may also be a risk factor. If someone in your family has had lupus, your risk of developing it many increase by up to 13 percent.

Lupus might produce relatively mild symptoms like skin rashes or hair loss. However, in more severe cases, the disease can be life-threatening and cause patients to become disfigured or disabled. It can also cause internal discomforts including joint and muscle pain, low fever or constant fatigue.

Severe cases could damage the heart, lungs, kidneys and other organs.

In addition, because lupus is a chronic illness, people who are affected by it experience symptoms with flares and remissions (they come and go).

Identifying and coping with lupus There is no cure for lupus. However, most of its symptoms are triggered by inflammation, which can be con-

trolled with medications. Treatments usually aim to prevent and alleviate flares as well as minimize damage to body parts and organs.

One distinct indicator of lupus is the appearance of a butterfly-shaped rash across the cheeks and bridge of the nose. While this symptom may help diagnose the disease in some, it does not happen in every case.

Because its symptoms are similar to those of other illnesses, lupus can be difficult to identify and is often underdiagnosed. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to minimizing symptoms.

Standardized tests cause Black concern Defender News Service

Standardized testing has emerged as an important civil rights and racial justice issue. As society examines the institutions and practices that perpetuate racial inequity, exams are not immunefrom the analysis. From No Child Left Behind and “teaching to the test” in public schools, to the SAT, ACT and Advanced Placement exams, highstakes testing dominates American education.

With a single score on a single exam having the potential to determine which school a student may attend, there is increased scrutiny over the misuse and overuse of these tests, and whether they should be used at all. While critics of standardized tests point to their inherent racial and socioeconomic bias, few may realize the insidious origins of these exams.

“Standardized tests have become the most effective racist weapon ever devised to objectively degrade Black minds and legally exclude their bodies,” said Ibram X. Kendi, Assistant Professor of History at the University of Florida and author of Stamped from

the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America.

Kendi argues that the achievement gap — that system of racial hierarchy in which white and Asian students find themselves at the top, and where Blacksand Latinos are at the bottom — is itself a result of our blind obedience to standardized testing, and this notion that intelligence is measurable.

“From our standpoint, standardized testing is one means that maintains segregation, particularly in

advanced placement courses,” added Bob Schaeffer, Public Education Director of Fair Test: National Center for Fair & Open Testing.

According to Schaeffer, the tests are “damaging the aspirations” of people of color. “The original founders of standardized testing were racists, misogynists and anti-Semites. They believed Nordic males were superior and their previous pseudo sciences like measuring brain sizes, craniology, palmistry etc., provided so-called evi-

dence for their beliefs, and standardized tests serve their purposes even better because it appeared objective” he said.

Black college students experience the impact of the SAT, ACT and other racial profiling exams on a regular basis.

Three African-American students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison—juniors Tyriek Mack and Marquise Mays, and sophomore Tashiana Lipscomb—conducted important research on the subject, and have been recognized internationally for their work. In their project, titled “Standardized Testing: The Social Warfare Against Black Men,” the young scholars found that the exams support the white supremacist leanings of their creators, and there is no correlation between a student’s score and their success in college.

According to Mays, while colleges claim to look at applicants in a holistic manner, the emphasis on standardized tests creates expectations. As a result, many Black students are discouraged from applying in the first place, as their lower scores make them feel as if they are not good enough and not ready for college.

SWAC Championship matchup coming into focus

By Max Edison | Defender The Toyota SWAC football championship game is right around the corner, December 3rd at NRG Stadium.

With two weeks remaining in the season and almost three months of football completed, the race to NRG has never been tighter. One division has clinched and another one appears headed to a showdown in New Orleans Thanksgiving weekend.

Never mind a change in head coaches, the Alcorn State Braves (4-4 in conference) are on a roll. Alcorn legend Fred “Air” McNair succeeds Jay Hopson at the top spot and the two-time SWAC champions are once again the SWAC East Division champs.

Since the championship game’s inception, Alcorn is the second team (1999-2001 Grambling State) to make three straight trips to the championship game.

The Braves demolition of Mississippi Valley, 61-7 last weekend coupled with a Jackson State loss to Alabama A&M 27-20, punched the Braves ticket back to NRG. Alcorn QB Lenorris Footman when healthy, is a dangerous threat running or passing the ball. He’s got a host of talented playmakers that make the Braves an explosive team offensively.

Beseeched by injuries all season, Alcorn closes the regular season out against Jackson State. They will have two weeks to mend before the championship game.

In the West, predictably, defending West Champs Grambling and rival Southern are tied at the top spot with perfect 7-0 records in conference play.

Both teams have one game remaining before they face each other Thanksgiving weekend in the Bayou Classic.

Grambling faces Texas Southern this week in a pre-Classic tune-up, while Southern takes on Mississippi Valley.

The Southern Jaguars, 7-2 overall, are three years removed from wearing the Conference crown. Head coach

Alcorn State’s Lenorris Footman hopes to lead the Braves to a third SWAC Football Championship title.

Dawson Odums’ Jags are the total package. They boast the leading rusher in conference history, Lenard Tillery.

Receiver Willie Quinn is second in the conference in receiving.

On defense the Jags are a physical unit. Aaron Tiller, Kentavious Preston and Roshaud Turner are the backbone of a defense that has a bend, but not break attitude.

The Grambling Tigers have been nothing short of dominant all season long. Head coach Broderick Fobbs’, defending West Division champs, lead the conference in total offense and defense. They average 42.6 points per game. They give up a mere 13.2 points.

The Tigers boast a prolific offense lead by quarterback Devante Kincade.

Kincade is the conference leader in passing yardage and passing efficiency with 24 TD’s against two interceptions.

Chad Williams is the leading receiver in the SWAC, averaging an astounding 136 yards per game. Running back Jestin Kelly is an experienced back who simply keeps the chains moving.

Samuel Reese, Guy Stallworth, Deontae Hatter, De’Arius Christ and Joseph McWilliams led a Grambling defense that has been absolutely stifling all season.

After a long grueling season, two teams that are extremely familiar with each other will face off to earn the right to travel to Houston’s NRG and face Alcorn State for the SWAC football championship. It will unfold right before our eyes and I, for one, can hardly wait.

The Bayou Classic, Nov. 26 at the New Orleans Superdome, will determine the West Division title.

The Dallas Cowboys are in 1st place in the NFC East (7-1), riding the wave of a seven game win streak. Offensively, that streak has been fueled by the sensational play of rookies Ezekiel Elliott and Dak Prescott.

Now reports out of Dallas indicate not every offensive player is excited about the success of Prescott. Since Prescott has taken over, Dez Bryant has seen his numbers diminish. Prescott, unlike Tony Romo, has spread the ball around to more open targets, resisting the urge to force the ball to Bryant, who in most cases is facing double team coverage. Some say that privately Bryant is hoping that a healthy Romo will regain his starting job and Bryant will once again be his favorite receiver. Stay tuned, this could get interesting.

Josh Huff lands in Tampa

Houstonian and former Philadelphia Eagle Josh Huff has landed in Tampa Bay after being recently released by the Eagles. Huff, a third-round draft pick in 2014, will be placed on the Buc’s practice squad. Josh, an explosive wide receiver and return man, was arrested a week ago for DUI, possession of an unloaded 9 mm handgun without a permit, possession of hollow-point ammunition and a small amount of marijuana. “You live and you learn, man,” Huff explained. “Obviously I’m mad that I put myself in that situation. I’m excited to be here. I’m excited to get going and get used to my new teammates and new players around me and get used to the staff.” Josh is an Aldine Nimitz graduate.

Episcopal falls in title game

Episcopal advanced to the Southwest Preparatory Conference Class 4A state championship game with a 9-1 record.

The loss came late in the season to Fort Worth All Saints (44-34), the same team the Knight met two weeks later in the title game. Episcopal squandered a 27-10 first-half lead as All Saints prevailed by scoring 26 unanswered points to end the game 57-39. All Saints scored two touchdowns in the final minutes of the first half to close within 27-24 at halftime.

Jake Levrier’s touchdown put Episcopal up 33-31 with five minutes, 27 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The 9-2 Knights scored again after trailing 57-31.

Episcopal has two of the highest rated college recruits in the nation, including 6-foot-4, 329-pound defensive tackle Marvin Wilson and 6-foot-8, 305-pound offensive tackle Walker Little. Both are uncommitted.

Could Hillary Clinton still be president?

Millions of Americans are holding on to a slim possibility that on Dec. 19th, the Electoral College will cast their votes not for the man who won the Electoral College, but rather the woman who won the most votes.

A Change.org petition launched just days after the election is asking the special group of electors, which meets in December to officially cast their votes for president, to make Clinton the nation’s next commander-in-chief. The former First Lady lost the presidential election in a historic upset to reality star turned politician Donald Trump — who many argue doesn’t have the political experience to run the country.

The petition has since received almost four million signatures from supporters.

“We’re calling on the Electors to ignore their states’ votes and cast their ballots for Secretary Clinton,” the petition reads. “Why? Mr. Trump is unfit to serve. His scapegoating of so many Americans, and his impulsivity, bullying, lying, admitted history of sexual assault, and utter lack of experience make him a danger to the Republic.”

Electors have the choice of either voting the way their states did (in favor of Trump), or they can write-in their vote for Clinton. In 21 states, Electors are not bound to vote the way their states did.

Critics of the electoral process have long spoken out about the flawed system, arguing that the special group of electors only favors states that lack diversity. Others express confusion about the need to vote at all since the Electoral College ultimately decides who is elected.

“The only reason Trump ‘won’ is because of the Electoral College,” the petition states. “But the Electoral College can actually give the White House to either candidate. So why not use this most undemocratic of our institutions to ensure a democratic result?”

The petition continues to gain steam as it circulates among celebrities and other influencers on social media.

California’s new Democratic senator-elect, Kamala Harris, may also be the next best hope for shattering that glass ceiling as supporters are already talking about a future presidential run.

Harris has drawn many comparisons to President Barack Obama, who famously ran for president during his first term in the Senate. Her background and her polished yet personable approach to politics embody what many think the Democratic Party should aim to look like going forward. And even before her Senate win, her name was floated for roles including California governor, Supreme Court justice and vice president.

Here are some things you should know about the woman who could very well challenge Trump in 2020.

She’s spent six years as California’s attorney general. Harris, a San Francisco Bay Area native, spent years as a prosecutor and was elected twice as San Francisco’s district attorney before she won the California attorney general race

in 2010. That election placed her at the top of the most populous state’s enormous law enforcement system and gave her a platform to fight for the issues she cared about.

Among her more high-profile efforts: waging a statewide campaign to reduce school truancy, eliminating the state’s backlog of untested rape kits, successfully suing the for-profit Corinthian Colleges to the tune of $1.1 billion and negotiating a mortgage relief settlement on behalf of California homeowners (which some critics said made a nice headline but didn’t accomplish much).

She’s also emerged as one of the leading attorneys general standing in solidarity with Black Lives Matter. During a pen-and-pad session with reporters at the Democratic National Convention in July, she spoke at length about police killings of Black men and women, arguing that states should take steps like keeping track of the data on officer-involved shootings and increasing training to reduce police bias.

Still, she’s been criticized by activists for not doing enough to investigate police shootings and for her opposition to statewide regulations on body cameras for police.

She’s campaigned on her criminal justice reform record.

Kamala Harris will be the only Black woman in the Senate.
