“We understand this is frustrating for some, and we apologize,” the Red Cross said. “We appreciate that this aid is needed, and we are committed to deliver it to those most severely affected by Hurricane Harvey as soon as possible.”

Al Green begins Trump impeachment effort Defender News Services

Houston Congressman Al Green announced that he will officially introduce articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump.

“Next week, I will officially be introducing articles of impeachment against the president of the United States. #RepealAndReplaceTrump,” Green wrote on Twitter.

In May, Green gained national attention as the first representative to call for Trump’s impeachment on the House floor. He said that move resulted in death threats.

“I have engaged in the process of drafting articles of impeachment,” he said. “My articles of impeach-

ment are being reviewed and at some point, if no one else does, I will file articles of impeachment to impeach President Donald J. Trump for obstruction of justice. The question really is not whether the president has obstructed justice, the question really is whether the president can obstruct justice with impunity.”

California Democrat Rep. Brad Sherman joined Green in support of the process. Sherman’s article of impeachment states that Trump should be removed due to “high crimes and misdemeanors.”

Fifty percent of the House of Representatives and two-thirds of the Senate must agree to remove a president from office.

Harris County Commissioners approved $20 million for the effort, saying the buyouts will occur all over the county, though many will be in the northern part. Harris County Judge Ed Emmett said he and commissioners wanted to get to homeowners as soon as possible before they started to rebuild.

‘Hidden Figures’ mathematician honored

NASA honored Katherine Johnson by dedicating a new research building in her name on their Hampton, Va. campus. Johnson inspired the movie “Hidden Figures.” The facility is officially named the Katherine G. Johnson Computational Research Facility and it will house the research and development that will support NASA’s future exploration missions. Built on the Langley Research Center, the building is 37,000 square feet and is worth $23 million. Johnson was called a human computer in the 60’s for her amazing knowledge of numbers and the ability to calculate. In 2015, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by former President Obama.

The search for Miss Black Harris County 2017 has ended and a new queen has emerged.

Diamond Griffith, a native Houstonian, was crowned Miss Black Harris County 2017. Her platform is “Authentically True,” which focuses on embracing ones flaws, and turning them into unique characteristics.

Griffith will work across the city of Houston promoting her platform and helping to increase awareness of what she considers an Diamond Griffith important issue. This Baker University graduate has a degree in criminal justice and sociology, and is aspiring to be an attorney and one day, a judge. She serves as an intercessory leader at the Harvest Time Church, is employed by the Texas Department of Health and Human Services and is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. ‘Def Comedy Jam’ alums reflect on series

he careers of some of the biggest stars in Hollywood and comedy can be traced back to one place – Russell Simmons’ “Def Comedy Jam.” The HBO stand-up series, which premiered in 1992, ran for five seasons and helped launch such stars as Steve Harvey, Sheryl Underwood, Dave Chappelle, Mike Epps, Chris Tucker and Martin Lawrence.

Now, 25 years later, many of the legendary alums return to reflect on how the show changed their lives. The “Def Comedy Jam 25” special, which was taped in Los Angeles, mixed live performances from Def Jam legends like Cedric the Entertainer, Adele Givens, Eddie Griffin, Tracy Morgan and Mike Epps with pretaped messages from stars like Chris Rock and Kevin Hart as well as footage from classic sets. It’s now available on Netflix.

TSU celebrates homecoming, ‘Tiger Dynasty’ Defender News Services

Texas Southern University will observe homecoming 2017 with the theme “Tiger Dynasty: 90 Years, the Reign Continues.”

Homecoming week will be held Oct. 7-14 and promises to be packed with lots of Tiger action. Alumni are invited to reconnect with their alma mater and join in commemorating 90 years of education and service.

The coronation ceremony of Miss TSU Tramauni Brock and Mr. TSU Chad Zeno will be held Saturday, Oct. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Center, and is the first of 22 scheduled student activities. Alumni events will begin Wednesday, Oct. 11 with an Old School vs. New School Game Night.

The annual Tiger Paw Golf Tournament is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 12 at Hermann Park Golf Course. This year’s format is a two-person Florida Scramble that will feature Longest Drive, Closest to the Pin and Best Dressed Team contests. First, second and third-place awards will be presented to the lowest team score. There is an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Entry fees are $300 per team or $150 per person for individual golfers.

10 facts about the brain

By MARILYN MARSHALL Defender The adult brain only weighs about three pounds, but it is a powerful and complex organ.

The brain lets us think, reason, experience emotions and dream. It controls voluntary movements such as walking, talking, sitting and standing, and regulates involuntary activities such as heartbeat. It receives information through the five senses – sight, smell, touch, taste and hearing.

Here are 10 additional facts about the brain: 1. The brain has three main parts. The cerebrum is involved in memory, thinking, feeling and problem-solving and controls movement. The cerebellum controls balance and coordination. The brain stem controls such functions as breathing, heart rate, blood pressure and digestion.

2. The brain is divided into right and left halves. The left half controls movement on the body’s right side, while the right half controls the left side. In most people, the language area is mainly

on the left.

3. Our brains reach 90 percent of their adult size by the time we are 5 years old. Language and spatial understanding regions (location of objects in relation to the body) grow dramatically between ages 5 and 10.

4. Our brains reach maturity when we are in our 20s, when the reasoning, planning and impulse-control areas are fully formed.

5. The first signs of gradual decline in brain volume begin to show in ages 40 to 50.

Short-term memory may be less sharp. In addition, reactions to complex stimuli, such as challenging calculations or card games, may take a little longer.

6. From ages 50 to 70, language and vocabulary are still sharp. The ability to understand how things work, creativity and wisdom can remain strong. At age 70 and beyond, many individuals’ reasoning, creativity, language and procedural memories will remain sharp.

7. It’s estimated that 10 percent of people age 65 and older have Alzheimer’s disease, a

type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior. African-Americans are two times more likely to develop late-onset Alzheimer’s disease than whites and less likely to have a diagnosis of their condition.

8. Mental disorders are brain disorders that can be related to changes in the anatomy, physiology and chemistry of the nervous system. When the brain cannot effectively coordinate the billions of cells in the body, the results can affect many aspects of life.

9. Common disorders include depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and schizophrenia.

10. Approximately one in five adults in the U.S. experiences mental illness in a given year.

Maintain a healthy brain Stay active. Exercise is good for your brain and your heart. Since African-Americans have a higher rate of stroke-related disease – which may be a risk factor for cognitive impairment – it’s important to engage in physical activity to reduce your risk.

Watch your blood pressure. Preventing or controlling high blood pressure helps maintain a

healthy brain and promotes overall health.

Manage your cholesterol. A healthy brain and heart depend on maintaining normal cholesterol levels. Eat a high-fiber, low-fat diet.

Fight diabetes. Prevention or control of diabetes promotes a healthy brain. Reduce your risk by maintaining a healthy weight and being physically

active.

Get enough sleep. Poor or inadequate sleep can affect your memory and thinking.

Find a new talent. Engage your brain by discovering new things. Learn another language or try a new hobby. Challenging your brain can be beneficial and fun.

Maximize kids’ brain power

Children’s brains are amazing, and parents can play an important role in their development from the very beginning.

“For the first three years of life, babies and children develop 1 million brain cells per second and thousands of connections between each brain cell,” said Dr. Adiaha Spinks-Franklin, developmental pediatrician at Texas Children’s Hospital.

“That means that the brain develops faster than any other organ for the first three years of life. This is an important period of a child’s life to “fill their brains up” with good – reading, independent living skills, social skills, empathy, knowledge about the world, selfcontrol, vocabulary, learning to solve problems, etc.”

Know the facts about concussions, sports

Preventing traumatic brain injury Here are some facts and figures on traumatic brain injury from the CDC: • TBI is a major cause of death and disability in the United States, contributing to about 30 percent of all injury deaths.

• Falls account for 47 percent of all TBI-related emergency department visits, hospitalizations and deaths in the U.S. • Other causes include being struck by or against an object, motor vehicle crashes, assaults and intentional self-harm.

• Those who survive a TBI can face effects that last a few days or the rest of their lives, including impaired thinking or memory, movement, sensation and emotional functioning.

Ways to prevent TBI include:

Concussions are one of the most commonly reported injuries in children and adolescents who participate in sports and recreational activities.

The CDC estimates that as many as 3.8 million sports and recreation-related concussions occur in the United States each year.

Concussions can occur in any organized or unorganized activity and can result from a fall or from players colliding with each other or with obstacles, such as a goalpost. Here are frequently asked questions.

Q. What is a concussion?

A. A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move quickly back and forth. This fast movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, creating chemical changes in the brain and sometimes stretching and damaging the brain cells.

Q. How can I help keep my children or teens safe?

A. To help lower your children’s or teens’ chances of getting a concussion or other serious brain injury, you should: Work with their coach to teach ways to lower the chances of getting a concussion.

Emphasize the importance of reporting concussions and taking time to recover from one.

Ensure that they follow their coach’s rules for safety and the rules of the sport.

Tell your children that you expect them to practice good sportsmanship at all times.

Depending on the sport or activity, teach your children that they must wear a helmet to lower the chances of the most serious types of brain or head injury. There is no “concussion-proof” helmet. Even with a helmet, it is important for children and teens to avoid hits to the head Q. How can I spot a possible concussion?

A. Children and teens who show or report one or more of the signs and symptoms may have a concussion or other serious brain injury. Signs observed by parents include: • Appears dazed or stunned.

• Forgets an instruction, is confused about an assignment or position, or is unsure of the game, score, or opponent.

• Moves clumsily.

• Answers questions slowly.

• Loses consciousness (even briefly).

• Shows mood, behavior, or personality changes.

• Can’t recall events prior to or after a hit or fall.

Symptoms reported by children can include: • Headache or “pressure” in the head.

• Nausea or vomiting.

• Balance problems or dizziness, or double or blurry vision.

• Bothered by light or noise.

• Feeling sluggish, hazy, foggy or groggy.

• Confusion, or concentration or memory problems.

• Just not “feeling right” or “feeling down.”

Q. What should I do if my child has a possible concussion?

A. Remove your child or teen from play. They should be seen by a health care provider and only return to play with permission from a provider who is experienced in evaluating for concussion. Ask the provider for written instructions on helping children return to school. You can give the instructions to the school nurse, teachers and coach/athletic trainer.

Do not try to judge the severity of the injury yourself. You may not know how serious the concussion is at first and some symptoms may not show up for hours or days. A child’s return to school and sports should be a gradual process that is carefully managed and monitored by a health care provider.

tripping hazards such as throw rugs or walkway clutter. Use nonslip bath mats. Install grab bars next to the toilet, tub or shower. Install handrails on both sides of stairways. Improve home lighting.

If your doctor agrees, maintain regular physical activity to improve lower body and balance.

2. Install window guards to keep young children from falling out of open windows. Use safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs when young children are around.

3. Always wear a seat belt

4. Buckle your child in the car using a child safety seat, boost-

er seat or seat belt. Buckle children in a rear-facing seat until age 2 or until they reach the upper weight or height limits of their seat.

Meat and cancer: What you need to know

With fall approaching and football season in full swing, Houstonians have plenty of opportunities for grilling. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the meat you eat may have an influence on your cancer risk.

In fact, in 2015 the World Health Organization labeled processed meats as “carcinogenic to humans” and red meats as “probably carcinogenic to humans.”

“There is a great deal of evidence showing that processed meats, like hot dogs and bacon, and red meat, like lamb and beef, can increase the risk of certain cancers,” says Carrie Daniel-MacDougall, Ph.D., assistant professor of Epidemiology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

While this does not mean these foods must be avoided entirely, it’s better to choose plant-based proteins, such as whole grains, beans and nuts, when possible, explains DanielMacDougall.

MD Anderson recommends limiting red meats and processed meats as part of a healthy diet. These tips can help you make better choices this fall.

EAT LESS PROCESSED MEAT Compounds are added to processed meats that extend their shelf life and preserve their color and flavor. When ingested with other compounds found in meat, such as heme iron, cancer-causing effects such as oxidative damage and inflammation occur.

Deli meats and bacon aren’t the only processed meats. Any meat that has been preserved by smoking, curing or salting is processed. And meats with added chemical preservatives are also processed. Some processed foods include sausage, hot dogs, pepperoni and beef jerky.

It’s also important to note that cooking meat at high temperatures, such as when pan-frying or grilling over an open flame, can produce cancer-causing compounds.

Read the label. Check the ingredient list for words like nitrate, nitrite, cured or salted. If you spot these words, it’s a processed meat.

Be an educated buyer. Even meats labeled “uncured” still can have nitrates and nitrites in them.

What about nitrate-free meats? These meats may have less nitrates and nitrites. But, they’re not completely nitrate-free. When you eat meat, particularly red meat, your stomach can still form similar cancer-causing substances in your body. So eat these meats in small quantities, too.

Think outside the box. Eating less processed meat is easier than you think. Here are some healthy swap tips to get you started.

Add grilled chicken, hard-boiled egg, beans, tofu or flaked tuna to your salad instead of cubed deli meat.

Order a grilled chicken or fish sandwich instead of a deli sandwich.

Add vegetables to your omelet instead of bacon, ham or sausage.

LIMIT RED MEAT There’s no need to completely eliminate red meat. Eating red meat, like beef, pork and lamb, in modest amounts provides valuable nutrients, including protein, iron, zinc and vitamin B12. Like processed meat, it’s best to keep it under 18 ounces per week.

Eat more plant proteins. Beans, soy and even soy yogurt are all excellent sources of protein. In fact, a half cup of beans contains as much protein as an ounce of broiled steak.

Experiment with chicken and fish recipes. Chicken, turkey and fish tend to be lower in saturated fat and cholesterol than their red meat counterparts. And they’re often lower in calories, which can help you maintain a healthy weight and reduce your risks for many types of cancer.

EAT MORE PLANT PROTEIN Eating plant proteins, such as nuts and beans, helps prevent muscle loss and makes it easier for you to maintain a healthy weight. Add more plant proteins to your diet by making these healthy swaps.

Find your tofu type. Tried tofu and didn’t like it? Don’t give up just yet. Tofu comes in different forms – firm, extra firm and silken. You may prefer one form over another.

Add beans. It’s a quick and easy way to make a meatless dish. Any type will do – kidney, black, pinto and garbanzo beans and lentils. They’re all high in protein with about 10 to 15 grams per cup.

Snack on nuts. A handful of almonds, peanuts or cashews make a great protein-packed snack. Even nut butters like peanut butter and almond butter are great sources of plant protein. Just be mindful of serving sizes because nuts tend to be high in calories.

Keep these tips in mind as you fill your plate. Remember to make 2/3 of your plate plant-based, whether it’s vegetables, fruits or grains. This will help you maintain a healthy weight and lower your cancer risk.

Defender: What is the most important thing we should know about brain cancer?

O’Brien: Brain cancer develops when cells in the brain grow out of control. These tumors may be “primary” (originate in the brain) or “secondary” (metastasize, or spread, to the brain from cancer in another part of the body), and may be benign (slow-growing) or malignant (faster-growing).

Glioblastoma is the most aggressive and m mon of the primary brain cancers, with about 1 cases diagnosed in the U.S. each year. Causes: Changes in the brainstem and its interactions with the trigeminal nerve inside the brain, that caused by stress, food additives, genetic factors and changes in environment.

Symptoms: Significant pain for hours to days and can be so severe that the pain is disabling, sensitivity to light and sound, visual phenomena, such as seeing various shapes, bright spots or flashes of light, vision loss, pins and needles sensations in an arm or leg, and sometimes difficulty speaking.

Prevention: Sometimes migraines can’t be avoided, however, regular aerobic exercise is recommended.

Treatment: Pain medications, acupuncture, diet modification and stress management.

MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS (MS)

Causes: Not known, however, viral infections cause the immune system to attack the protective sheath (myelin) that covers nerve fibers that produce communication problems between the brain and rest of the body.

Symptoms: Weakness, tingling, numbness, blurred vision, muscle stiffness, thinking problems and urinary problems.

Prevention: No known prevention; healthier diet with increased vitamin D intake can help reduce risk.

Symptoms may include headaches, seizures, memory problems or personality changes, difficulty speaking and weakness on one side of the body. These symptoms may start suddenly or gradually. If you are having symptoms concerning brain cancer, your doctor will likely order a brain imaging test such as an MRI scan.

Defender: What is the treatment?

O’Brien: Treatments for brain cancer include surgery, radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy. For glioblastoma and other primary malignant brain tumors, surgery is typically the first step of treatment. Ideally,

Treatment: Plasma exchanges, physical therapy, and medications to speed recovery from attacks or slow the progression of symptoms.

PARKINSON’S

Causes: Sparked by low and falling dopamine levels that trigger abnormal brain activity.

Symptoms: Tremors, changes in walking, muscle stiffness, impaired balance, anxiety, depression, and slowed movement.

Prevention: There is no known way to prevent Parkinson’s, however, a healthier diet that centers around eating more plants and less red meats and dairy products have been proven to reduce the risk.

Treatment: The disease can’t be cured, however, there are medications that promote dopamine, anti-tremors and cognitive enhancement.

PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY

Causes: Dysfunction of the nerves in the spinal cord, legs, or arms typically produced by diabetes, vitamin deficiencies, Lyme disease, leprosy, some cancers, toxins (lead and arsenic) and nerve tumors.

Symptoms: Numbness, tingling and other abnormal sensations, inability to determine joint position, clumsiness, extreme sensitivity to touch, weakness and change in walking.

Prevention: No known prevention, however, regular aerobic exercise may reduce the risk.

Treatment: Medications to reduce symptoms.

SEIZURES

Causes: Epilepsy, diabetes, fevers, brain injuries abnormal levels of sodium or glucose in the blood, and viral infections like meningitis.

Symptoms: Short attention blackouts, dazed behavior, memory gaps, mumbling or no response, sudden falls, frequent stumbling, unusual clumsiness, repeated, unusual movements such as head nodding, rapid blinking, sudden stomach pain followed by confusion and sleepiness.

Prevention: Determining what triggers the seizure can help limit or prevent it.

Treatment: Medications that can successfully treat and manage symptoms.

VERTIGO

Causes: Imbalance of the inner ear due to stroke, severe migraines, brain tumor, Meniere’s disease or viral infections.

Symptoms: Sensation of feeling off balance, dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea and vomiting, a sense of motion sickness, tinnitus, increased perspiration and a feeling of fullness in the ear.

Prevention: Natural stress relievers like exercising, yoga and meditation.

Treatment: Medications, vestibular rehabilitation, physical therapy and surgery.

the surgery should be performed by a neurosurgeon with expertise in brain tumors. The goal is to remove as much of the tumor as safely possible, without damaging normal brain.

After surgery, patients typically are treated with radiation and/or chemotherapy. Patients may have the opportunity to enroll in clinical trials, which test cutting-edge treatments that target the immune system or the pathways controlling the growth of cancer cells. Ben Taub surgeons save man after horse attack

ollowing extensive surgeries to reconstruct a crushed larynx – broken in four places after a savage horse bite – and reattach torn tissue and muscle ligaments, surgeons at Harris Health System’s Ben Taub Hospital still weren’t sure if Ivory Lindsey Sr. would ever speak again, much less regain the ability to swallow, drink or eat food.

To their surprise, he did it all.

During a physicians’ bedside consultation, a doctor handed Lindsey a paper tablet to write down responses to questions.

Lindsey had been bitten on the throat by a horse in May 2016. The 57-year-old survived his injuries by avoiding cuts by mere millimeters to his jugular vein and carotid artery – injury to either would’ve likely been fatal.

Signs of chronic liver disease

Y

our liver is the largest internal organ in your body, performing thousands of important bodily functions, from cleansing the blood of toxins to converting food into nutrients to controlling your hormone levels. Most Alvin Barrow, M.D. people never give their liver a thought – until something goes wrong. Unfortunately for black men and women, something “goes wrong” with the liver all too frequently.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health, chronic liver disease is one of the leading causes of death among blacks. In 2015, it was the eighth leading cause of death for non-Hispanic blacks, 45-64 years old.

Many types and causes

Chronic liver disease is any disease of the liver lasting six months or more. In fact, there are many

types of liver disease. It can be inherited or caused by a variety of factors that damage the liver and may lead to liver failure – a life-threatening condition.

The main causes of chronic liver diseases are hepatitis (A, B or C) and other viruses, alcohol abuse, and fatty liver disease associated with obesity. Of liver diseases that are inherited, the most common is hereditary hemochromatosis, a disease in which a specific genetic defect leads to iron accumulation in the liver, leading to cirrhosis and liver cancer in some patients.

Many common liver diseases can cause the liver to become inflamed. These can progress to scarring, or cirrhosis, which increases the risk for liver cancer or liver failure.

Telltale signs

Signs of liver disease include: • Skin and eyes that appear yellowish (jaundice) • Abdominal pain and swelling • Swelling in legs and ankles • Dark urine color • Pale, bloody or tar-colored stool • Nausea or vomiting • Tendency to bruise easily

Common risk factors

Factors that may increase your risk of liver disease include: • Heavy alcohol use • Injecting drugs using shared needles • Tattoos or body piercings • Blood transfusion pre-1992 • Exposure to other people’s blood and body fluids • Unprotected sex • Exposure to certain chemicals or toxins • Diabetes • Obesity • High levels of lipids in your blood To help determine whether you have liver disease, your doctor may recommend a group of blood tests called liver function tests, imaging tests such as a CT scan, MRI and ultrasound to check for liver damage and/or a tissue sample (biopsy). Treatment depends on the type of liver problem found. Some disorders can be treated with lifestyle modifications, while others may require medications or surgery.

Mayor Turner wants rainy day fund for recovery Texas Tribune

Mayor Sylvester Turner said that a lack of immediate state funding for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts is forcing him to push for a property tax hike in this storm-battered city still reeling from the worst rainfall event in U.S. history.

In a wide-ranging interview with the Texas Tribune about the city’s on-going relief efforts, Turner also said that the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers could have done a better job of warning people about the impacts of releasing water from reservoirs, which aggravated flooding in neighborhoods below the reservoirs.

He also said that an untold number of houses could have been spared from extensive water damage if federal ofMayor Sylvester Turner ficials had funded flood control projects in years past.

And, Turner said, he’s worried that a “bureaucratic maze” could slow relief money that Houstonians need to rebuild or relocate. “We need to get those housing dollars to them, like, yesterday,” he said.

Turner said his biggest focus will be on making sure that the city’s most vulnerable residents – the elderly, disabled, low-income workers and children – get back on their feet.

Houston officials estimate the total cost of paying for first responders’ overtime, debris collection that will take months and scores of other expenses associ-

ated with storm response and recovery will exceed $250 million.

Turner has drawn criticism for wanting to raise the city’s property tax rate for one year to bring in an additional $50 million, which would cost the owner of an average Houston house $48.

Turner said he wouldn’t have proposed the tax hike if Gov. Greg Abbott had called for a special session so lawmakers could tap the state’s savings account, which has more than $10 billion, to help Houston and scores of other southeast Texas communities recover from the catastrophic storm.

“If he told me he was going to tap it, I wouldn’t propose [the property tax hike],” Turner said.

Abbott has said the state will almost certainly tap into the account, though it’s not yet known when that will happen, how much money will be taken or how funds will be spent.

“We need to first understand what obligations we’re going to have, how much they will amount to, and decide upon the best strategies to pay for that,” Abbott said earlier this month.

State officials don’t need to call a special session to fund Harvey relief. The Legislative Budget Board could redirect money from state agencies to relief efforts and then replace that money with funds from the rainy day fund when lawmakers return in January 2019.

Houston voters in 2010 agreed to pay for drainage projects with new fees expected to bring in billions over 20 years. But Turner said it’s still not enough to better prepare for catastrophic rain events, which are becoming more common in the rapidly developing region.

“That will help out some, but we still need the feds to do their part,” Turner said.

The mayor said that there are three long-planned flood control projects that could have been completed before Harvey but are languishing because Congress hasn’t funded them, including one to increase the capacity of Brays Bayou, a watershed that cuts through the city and is meant to prevent flooding.

Their plight no longer commands the nation’s attention, but the victims of Hurricane Harvey are still out there. In neighborhoods throughout Houston, residents are working to pick up the pieces after Harvey’s winds and rain devastated parts of the city.

Tosha Atibu’s family had to flee their home in northeast Houston when the floodwaters came last month. Now Atibu, her husband and their four children are living in their gutted home as they start the long road to recovery.

“I know it’s not a safe place to be, but...I don’t know where else I can go,” Atibu told CNN. Amari Johnson just received an extension at the hotel she was staying in, a big worry finally off her chest. But as she waits on FEMA to respond, she can’t begin to start

rebuilding.

“My house is a total loss. I got $500 from FEMA, but since that’s not enough for me to move, it’s just a waiting game,” Johnson said.

Astros win division title, seeking playoff success

or the first time in 21 years the Astros are division champs, recently clinching the American League West title. This is the Astros’ seventh division title in team history, and their first since they won four in a five-year stretch in the National League Central from 1997-01. The Astros also won the NL West in 1980 and 1986. When the Astros won the NL pennant in 2005, they did so as a wild card.

With goal No. 1 for the 2017 season accomplished, the franchise now turns its attention toward the month of October and playoff baseball.

“The No. 1 priority is to win the division,” manager A.J. Hinch said. “We set out that goal right away from the beginning of spring training. We wanted to take care of our own business and win the division. We did that. We need 11 wins in October to make Jose Altuve it even more special. The fact we could clinch it at home in front of our home fans is a really special feeling for a really special group of guys.”

It has been a magical season for the Astros, getting off to a hot start and going 42-16 to start this season. Despite a rash of key injuries along the way the team has stayed the course. Outfielder Josh Reddick discussed what the difference has been this year.

sportsbriefs Bernie Casey dead at 78 Bernie Casey, one of the NFL’s fastest receivers in the 1960s and an actor and artist who gained fame in the 1970s and 1980s, died on Sept. 19 after a brief illness. He was 78. Casey enjoyed an eight-year NFL career as a wide receiver with the 49ers and the Rams. After retiring at age 29, Casey went on to become successful in another field. His professional acting career began with “Guns of the Magnificent Seven,” a sequel to “The Magnificent Seven,” in 1969. He appeared in some 35 films, including “Boxcar Bertha,” ‘’The Man Who Fell to Earth,” ‘’Brian’s Song” and “Never Say Never Again.” Casey starred opposite fellow NFL veteran Jim Brown in “...tick...tick...tick” and “Black Gunn.” Casey also had starring roles in “Revenge of the Nerds” and “I’m Gonna Get You Sucka.”
