Business leaders want intervention in HISD ‘failure’ Defender News Services

The state’s education chief wants Texas schools to deliver more fully on the promise of public education. Yet Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath stopped short of discussing a state takeover of HISD schools when he addressed hundreds of business and education leaders at an event hosted by the Greater Houston Partnership.

Morath is expected to remove Houston’s elected school board because of academic or governance is-

sues but he didn’t reveal any details about the decision.

That didn’t stop local business leaders from saying what they want to see happen.

“We think the Houston Independent School District board’s long-term failure to consistently support all of our schools, all of our kids, warrants new leadership at HISD,” said Bob Harvey, president and CEO of the Partnership.

Harvey previously advocated for a state takeover in an editorial published over the summer. He urged others to stay involved in public education, in particular

to vote in the upcoming HISD board elections and to recruit qualified candidates if the state installs a board of managers to govern Houston schools.

A state law mandates the commissioner oust the elected board or close struggling schools if even one school fails state standards for five or more years. That has occurred with Wheatley High School, a historically Black school in Houston’s Fifth Ward. It has received failing ratings from the state seven times in a row. HISD has appealed the latest rating, which is expected to be resolved by December.

Anthony Onyegbula was at the United Community Bank in Atlanta, waiting to open an account with his wife. As he spoke outside on the phone, a worker inside was on the phone with police, saying she felt he was “up to no good.” Police came, asked the couple questions, then left without incident. The bank said it does not comment publicly on the “details of any customer or potential customer transactions,” though they did apologize to the couple……A WHITE STUDENT WHOSE BLACKFACE PHOTO went viral is blaming others for sharing the photo because it was just a “moment of silliness.”

The Colorado State University freshman and her friends were in black face with the caption “Wakanda Forever.” She then said they were using facial mud and had the less than smart idea to take the photo and none of the college students thought it was even remotely offensive. Instead of taking accountability, she continued blaming others.

For all of the backlash she has received, CSU has decided not to punish any of the students, arguing the students did not violate any school policies and the photo is protected by the First Amendment.

Biden on racism: White people can’t understand Associated Press

During a recent visit to a Black church bombed by the Ku Klux Klan during the civil rights era, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden framed current racial tensions as part of an enduring struggle that is older than the nation.

When it comes to African-American support for President Donald Trump, Black men are five times more likely to lend their support than Black women.

According to a new CNN poll, Trump's approval rating among Black women is 3 percent. However, that same CNN poll has Trump at an approval of 15 percent from Black men.

As political strategist Dr. Jason Johnson wrote, “Y’all realize if Trump keeps 15 percent of Black men in 2020 he probably gets re-elected, right?”

Last year, conservative-leaning Rasmussen Reports claimed that 35 percent of African-Americans approve of Trump, claiming Trump’s overall approval rating at 51 per-

cent among likely voters.”

The Washington Post called that claim “far-fetched,” and pointed out that Gallup surveys have consistently polled African-American approval of Trump at around 10 percent through 2018.

Trump has consistently exaggerated the impact of his administration on the Black community. He claimed that Black median income has reached a high point under his administration.

Census Bureau data, however, shows that the median income in 2017 for an African-American household was $40,258. That’s below a year 2000 peak of $42,348 and also statistically no better than 2016, which was President Barack Obama’s last year in office.

eorgetown University sociology professor and noted author Dr. Michael Eric Dyson is heading to Houston for a conversation on race and redemption as he discusses his latest book “What Truth Sounds Like: Robert F. Kennedy, James Baldwin, and Our Unfinished Conversation About Race in America.”

Dyson, an ordained Baptist minister known for his passion and a moral urgency in and out of the pulpit, has had a profound influence on American culture. The Houston event is sponsored by Change Happens!, a community-based nonprofit located in Third Ward.

His book is a race relation analysis of a 1963 meeting between Kennedy and a group of respected African-American public figures, including the late Lena Horne and entertainer and activist Harry Belafonte.

“The thing I find most compelling about the meeting that took place with Sen. Kennedy and these notable Blacks was that many people didn’t know about it,” Dyson said. “So, my goal was to inform people on something very little knew about.”

Dyson hopes to educate the audience on racial and social issues such as gender, homophobia, systematic injustices of minorities in this country, particularly criticizing President Trump and white supremacy.

“As long as we have a bigot-in-chief, a predator-in-chief, a sexist-in-chief, we must resist his impulsive behavior,” Dyson said.

His motivation for making a continuous effort toward having open conversations about racial conflict stems from the relevance of the topic in today’s society. In most of his speeches, he brings up the effects of systematic oppression and economical inequalities.

“Race has been the central defining issue of our society,” Dyson said. “And I feel like if I can provide humor to a harsh yet honest voice, then it’ll incite and

provoke some change. I want to provide a voice to my white brothers without being condescending or insensitive.”

Dyson doesn’t hesitate to touch on the discomfort of the topic of race mentioned when it comes to Caucasian males.

“We want to pretend that we haven’t had disagreements about Black and white, red, Brown, and yellow in this country,” Dyson said. “We want to pretend that whiteness has not been the verometer, the thermostat, the litmus test, the benchmark, the bellwether, the defining paradigm of what is acceptable in America.

“So, what’s interesting is that when we think about what our ideals are as Americans, this is not what Benjamin Franklin had in mind, this is not what James Madison had in mind, this is not what Thomas Jefferson had in mind, this is not even what [John] Hancock signed on to. This is not America at its best,” he said.

Dyson plans to focus on where we’ve been and we’re going. He added that Blacks in America did not rebel just to do so, but felt that their ancestors fought for what was morally correct and that they had the right to do the same for themselves and their families. A privilege that many Black people were lacking at the time due to the color of their skin delayed the rights that they truly deserved at birth, Dyson said.

Dyson's legendary ascent – from welfare father to Princeton Ph.D., from church pastor to college professor, from a factory worker who didn’t start college until he was 21 – may help explain why some call him “the ideal public intellectual of our time."

SOBW movement focuses on political agenda

With the theme of “The Power of Us,” Black women from all walks of life gathered to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing them in the political arena.

“We can. We do. We will,” said State Rep. Shawn Thierry in her opening remarks during the State of Black Women’s Agenda Breakfast at the Ensemble Theatre sponsored by the SOBW movement and the Texas Legislative Black Caucus.

The event included a message about “Black Girl Magic” by Defender Managing Editor and author ReShonda Tate Billingsley.

Women across the city met at the Ensemble to participate in a series of polls related to the political climate and share their thoughts on pressing issues. They also spoke with Black female legislators about their agendas and concerns. Results included: • The women were almost evenly distributed between the age categories of 25-40, 40-55 and 55 or older. Eighty-seven percent had some college or a degree with 69 percent holding post-graduate degrees. More than 61 percent earned $50,000 to $100,000 annually, 17 percent earned over $100,000 and 64 percent had children.

• When asked to describe themselves politically, 36 percent were very active and 55 percent voted regularly. In the area of political affiliation there were no Republicans; 77 percent were Democrats and 23 percent Independents.

• The top three issues confronting the Black community according to the women polled are fixing the criminal justice system, the economy and addressing equal pay for women.

• When asked what presidential candidate they would vote for, U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren led the pack. There was a four-way tie between Sens. Kamala Harris, Cory Booker and Bernie Sanders, and Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

Guests also participated in an intimate conversation with State Reps. Senfronia Thompson and Thierry.

Both legislators emphasized the importance of having “a seat at the table” so that the issues that are most important to the Black community are understood, taken seriously and addressed.

“It’s about being informed, having life experience and perspective,” Thierry said.

She also addressed the issue of maternal mortality and referenced her experience as a mother.

“Had I not been a Black woman who almost died during childbirth, I wouldn’t have believed the report that Black women are three times more likely to die [during/after delivery],” she said.

Thompson has focused on issues such as mental health, human trafficking and Medicare. This year, she called for $5 million in funding for brain research to address mental health in children as well as depression, schizophrenia and suicide.

“Nothing gets done without a fight,” Thompson said. “If they don’t respect us, they can expect us!”

n average, men don’t live as long as women, but the good news is, many of the factors that contribute to men’s shorter lives are preventable. From adopting healthier lifestyles to seeing a doctor on a regular basis, men can help close the longevity gap. Here are 10 things to know about men’s health:

The life expectancy at birth for AfricanAmerican males is 71.9 years, compared to 78.5 for African-American females, 76.4 for white males and 81.2 for white females.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men in the United States, killing 347,879 men in 2017, about 1 in every 4 male deaths. About 1 in 14 (7.1 percent) of Black men have coronary heart disease. Half of the men who die suddenly of coronary heart disease had no previous symptoms.

A healthy diet and regular exercise can reduce the risk of heart disease. Nutrition tips include limiting saturated fats, foods high in sodium and added sugars and eating more fresh fruit, vegetables and whole grains.

Exercise advice includes at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity a week, or a combination. Housekeeping, taking the stairs or walking the dog all count toward exercise.

Men are less likely than women to report mental health problems and to receive professional help. Black and Hispanic men are less likely than white men to report having daily feelings of anxiety or depression.

Homicide is the main killer of AfricanAmerican males 15 to 34 years old and African-American males are much more likely to be murdered than are white males. A breakdown of deaths by age group shows that for Black males ages 15-19, homicide accounted for 50.8 percent of total deaths; ages 20-24, 49.6 percent of total deaths; ages 25-34, 34.1 percent of total deaths.

High blood pressure often starts at a younger age and is more severe in African-American men than in white men.

African-American men with high blood pressure are also less likely to have it under control.

Programs across the country are turning to barbershops – an important part of Black male culture – to tackle hypertension. In Los Angeles, pharmacists stationed in barbershops monitor men’s blood pressure and prescribe or adjust medications. In DeKalb County, Ga., a program is training licensed barbers to accurately check the blood pressure readings of their clients and encourage them to seek additional health care.

Blacks account for a higher proportion of new HIV diagnoses and people living with HIV, compared to other races/ ethnicities in the U.S. In 2017, 73 percent of Blacks who received an HIV diagnosis were men. Sixty percent of Blacks who received an HIV diagnosis were gay or bisexual men.

Fewer men than women have Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias.

The reasons for the gender difference are still unclear, but theories include longer life expectancies in women, hormonal influences or genetic risk factors.

An alliance of universities, medical schools and other entities has formed the Black Men’s Health Project to gain a deeper understanding of the unique health challenges facing Black men and develop culturally competent strategies and solutions to improve health outcomes.

frican-American men are at greater risk of having a stroke than any other group of men in the United States. Compared to white men, they are twice as likely to have a stroke, have strokes at younger ages, die from stroke, or have stroke-related disability that affects their daily activities. Fortunately, up to 80 percent of strokes can be prevented.

Here are frequently asked questions and the answers.

Q. Why are African-American men at higher risk of stroke?

A. Two out of five African-American men have high blood pressure, a main risk factor for stroke. Other risk factors which disproportionately affect Black men include diabetes, sickle cell anemia, smoking, being overweight and eating too much salt.

Q. What is a stroke?

A. A stroke or cerebrovascular accident occurs when the blood supply to the brain is cut off (an ischemic stroke) or when a blood vessel bursts (a hemorrhagic stroke). Most strokes are of the ischemic type.

Without oxygen, brain cells begin to die. Death or permanent disability can result. High blood pressure, smoking, and having had a previous stroke or heart attack increase a person’s chances of having a stroke.

According to the American Heart Association, about 795,000 people in the United States suffer a stroke each year (about 610,000 first attacks and 185,000 recurrent attacks).

Four million Americans who have survived a stroke are living with impairments and 15 to 30 percent are permanently disabled.

With timely treatment, the risk of death and disability from stroke can be lowered. It is very important to know the symptoms of a stroke and act in time.

Q. What are the symptoms of a stroke?

A. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke notes these major signs of stroke: • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arms or legs.

• Sudden confusion or trouble speaking or understanding others.

• Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.

• Sudden trouble walking, dizziness or loss of balance or coordination.

• Sudden severe headache with no known cause.

• If you think someone is having a stroke, you should call 9-1-1 immediately.

Q. What are ways to help prevent strokes?

A. There are five steps you can take: 1. Healthy diet – Choosing healthy meal and snack options can help you prevent stroke. Eating foods low in saturated fats, trans fat and cholesterol and high in fiber can help prevent high cholesterol.

Limiting salt (sodium) in your diet can also lower your blood pressure. High cholesterol and high blood pressure increase your chances of having a stroke.

2. Healthy weight – Being overweight or obese increases your risk for stroke. To determine whether your weight is in a healthy range, you can calculate your body mass index (BMI).

4. No smoking – Cigarette smoking greatly increases your chances of having a stroke. If you don’t smoke, don’t start. If you do smoke, quitting will lower your risk for stroke.

5. Limited alcohol – Avoid drinking too much alcohol, which can raise your blood pressure. Men should have no more than two drinks per day, and women only one.

What men should know about

prostate cancer

nowing the facts about prostate cancer can be a matter of life or death. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Black men, and according to the American Cancer Society, about 1 in 7 Black men will be diagnosed with the disease in his lifetime.

In a Q&A with the Defender, Dr. Curtis Pettaway, a professor in the Department of Urology, Division of Surgery, the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer, discusses the matter.

Defender: What is the number one thing men should know about prostate cancer?

Pettaway: Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in males and Black men are more likely to be diagnosed and die of the disease. However, if detected early it can be cured.

Defender: What are the most common symptoms of prostate cancer?

Pettaway: The most common symptom is no symptom at all! Most men are diagnosed because of an elevated serum Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) Blood Test. Some men do have symptoms at diagnosis. These could consist of difficulty voiding, frequent urination, getting up at night to void, pelvic or back pain.

Defender: What is a PSA test and why are there pros and cons to it?

Pettaway: PSA is a protein produced by both normal and cancerous prostate cells. The presence of cancer often causes an elevation of the serum PSA or more rapid changes in your PSA reading from year to year. Since PSA is not an exact marker of cancer, elevations can also be caused by other things such as benign growth of the prostate or prostatic inflammation. For this reason, some men may undergo unnecessary testing.

It is also possible that some men could be diagnosed with prostate cancer with a normal PSA reading. So, PSA is not a perfect test but it is still one of the most useful tests in all of oncology.

Defender: How is prostate cancer treated?

Pettaway: Prostate cancer treatment is based upon the extent of disease "called tumor stage" and also the grade Dr. Curtis Pettaway of the cancer (how bad it looks under the microscope). For very low stage cancers that are low grade, sometimes we recommend no initial treatment but monitor the patient with PSA, examination every six months, imaging tests, and repeat biopsy.

Most cancers are localized at the time of diagnosis and for those that are higher grade or more extensive we will recommend surgery, radiation, hormonal therapy or combinations of the treatments. The latter combinations are often used for high grade cancers or those that have broken through the capsule of the prostate.

Prostate cancer can spread to regional lymph nodes or bone

in some cases. In these cases, androgen deprivation therapies including newer more potent agents are available along with chemotherapy. Unfortunately, when the cancer spreads to lymph node or bone, long-term cure is usually not possible. However, with the use of the newer agents patients are living longer.

Defender: What can African-American men do to reduce their risk?

Pettaway: Be aware that prostate cancer is common among African-American males and speak with their physicians about PSA testing to determine when and if the test should be done in their specific case. The American Cancer Society recommends that the test be considered among Black men starting at the age of 45 years. The test could even be considered at the age of 40 among Black men with a family history of prostate cancer in their father or brother.

1. Men who are 50 or older have a higher risk of prostate cancer.

2. The prostate is part of the male reproductive system and is directly below the bladder and above the muscles of the pelvic floor.

3. The prostate’s most important function is the production of a fluid that, together with sperm cells from the testicles and fluids from other glands, makes up semen.

4. The prostate gland is about the size of a walnut when a man is in his 20s. By the time he is 40, it may have grown slightly larger, to the size of an apricot. By age 60, it may be the size of a lemon.

5. The results of a PSA test are usually reported as nanograms of PSA per milliliter (ng/mL) of blood. In the past, most doctors considered PSA levels of 4.0 ng/mL and lower as normal. Therefore, if a man had a PSA level above 4.0 ng/mL, doctors would often recommend a prostate biopsy to determine whether cancer was present. Recent studies have shown that some men with PSA levels below 4.0 ng/mL have prostate cancer and that many men with higher levels do not have prostate cancer.

What to tell kids, teens about fad diets

iets are temporary but habits are forever. Patients frequently ask me if a certain diet works and if it’s healthy. To answer the first question – yes.

Usually any diet which dramatically restricts in calories will result in weight loss. But to answer the second question – probably not.

Most fad diets that radically lower calories most likely would leave out essential nutrients. Diets usually don’t work long term, because by their very nature, they are not sustainable for a lifetime.

What happens after a diet becomes too hard to maintain?

We go back to whatever we were doing, but also now feel we have failed and the weight comes back. This can also trigger eating disorders, not only among teens, but adults as well. It’s only natural to want a quick solution for our problems, whether it is weight, grades, etc.

At school, kids may be exposed to others dieting.

Speaking with them about diets early will help them have better relationships with food later. Remind your child weight is only one aspect of health and your focus is helping them prevent diseases, to give them energy, and helping them to grow.

To have sustainable weight loss and improved health outcomes, there are a few key concepts parents can keep in mind when discussing these topics with their children: The choices we repeat the most are going to make the

most difference.

Everything from the portion sizes of our meals to how much we exercise (or don’t) plays a role. Having cake at your birthday party isn’t going to make as much of an impact as cutting out the afternoon soda or morning juice over the course of a year.

Changes should be made for every person in the household, regardless of weight or health status.

No one benefits from sugary beverages, daily hot chips, or lack of vegetables. We all need environments that help us make healthier eating easier. Pack fresh snacks for kids so it’s easier for them to say no to less healthy options.

Start out by picking the easiest thing to change.

Try limiting soda to just when eating out rather than having it at home; going on a walk in the evening before sitting down to do homework; diluting juice with water; or purchasing fewer snack foods.

Help kids get right amount of

(good) sleep

fter being on a summer schedule, the first few weeks back to school can be tough for kids to get going in the morning. However, it is also the perfect time to reset schedules and create routines.

All children need an adequate amount of sleep to excel at school. Just as getting a good breakfast helps fuel them throughout the day, getting a good night’s rest helps children meet their academic and athletic potential. The exact amount of sleep a child needs varies, but these recommended sleep totals are a good guide for parents to follow: • Preschoolers (3-5 years): 10 to 13 hours • School-aged kids (6-13 years): nine to 11 hours • Teenagers (14-17 years): eight to 10 hours Sleep is a restorative activity that helps recharge our bodies and helps us retain what we have learned throughout the day. It is important for both

mental and physical development. If children do not get enough sleep, it can negatively affect their overall growth, mood and behavior in school.

Parents can help their children get the sleep they need with these tips: • Develop a nightly routine that children equate with winding down and going to sleep, such as taking a bath or reading a book.

• Create a soothing sleep environment. Try to recreate a cool, dark and calm space in your child’s room for comfortable snoozing. Night lights are okay, but screens should be kept out of the room.

• Limit the use of electronics that emit blue lights, such as tablets and smartphones. Screens can be stimulating, which can make it harder to sleep. Stop using screens at least one hour before bed and charge electronics in another room.

• Caffeine can also be a disruptor for falling asleep at night, so keep that in mind if your teen drinks caffeinated beverages.

or some men, a doctor’s office is the last place they want to be.

Yet, given the various medical challenges confronting men, health care should be a priority.

Regular exams can help find problems before they start and increase the chances of living a longer, healthier life.

Studies show how unlikely men are to get regular checkups: • A CDC report found that men are half as likely as women to go to the doctor over a two-year period.

• Another CDC study found that the doctor visit rate among females (315 visits per 100 females) was higher than the rate for males (239 visits per 100 males).

• A survey of men by the Cleveland Clinic found that 72 percent would rather perform Dr. Larry Caesar household chores, like mowing the lawn or cleaning the bathroom, than go to the doctor.

• A University of Michigan study found that a majority of African-American men said they do not go to the doctor because visits are stressful and physicians don't give adequate information on how to make prescribed behavioral or lifestyle changes.

In a Q&A with the Defender, two physicians shed light on Dr. Mark Levine the subject: Dr. Larry Caesar, a pediatrician at Legacy Community Health’s Fifth Ward Clinic and Dr. Mark Levine, an adult primary care/internal medicine doctor at Legacy’s Montrose Clinic.

Defender: According to one CDC study, men are half as likely as women to go to the doctor. Why is this a cause for concern?

Caesar/Levine: Men generally have higher rates of chronic diseases than women and a significantly shorter life expectancy.

Many medical conditions have no symptoms and require an evaluation by a physician or other medical provider to detect problems before they manifest as disease.

Not getting checkups is like having a sports car that is externally detailed regularly while scheduled oil and maintenance checks are ignored. The potential downfall is the engine seizing up on the freeway. If you look at the time, cost and discomfort of getting regular oil changes, they are nothing compared to the cost of replacing an entire engine.

The same goes for your health. The time, cost and possible discomfort of regular checkups and screenings, are nothing compared to a heart attack or stroke in a young man that blindsides not only him but his entire family.

Defender: Heart disease is the leading cause of death among men. How could regular medical check-ups decrease men's risk for heart disease?

Caesar/Levine: There are many risk factors for heart disease that can be uncovered and addressed during regular checkups with a medical provider.

Many men think they are at low-risk because they are active and have been told in the past their cholesterol is “good.” There are many more factors, such as stress management, family history and lifestyle that can be addressed during a visit with their doctor.

For example, there is increasing evidence that heart disease, the result of changes to blood vessels where fatty material clogs up the blood vessels that supply the heart, starts in childhood.

Much of our diet in the U.S., with a heavy emphasis on processed foods, has accelerated this process greatly. During regular checkups men can be given the dietary and lifestyle counselling they need to make the right choices about levels of daily activity, healthy eating and stress management.

Defender: How often should men see a doctor?

Caesar/Levine: How often men should see a doctor depends on many things. If they have been told previously by a doctor that they are in good health and at low risk for diseases or infections, they should see a see a doctor at least once a year, at most every two years for

their annual checkup.

Men with family histories of conditions like cardiovascular disease, prostate cancer, diabetes, and men with personal risk factors like obesity, metabolic syndrome, cigarette-smoking, any autoimmune diseases, and even stressful jobs should see a doctor more often.

Men should pay close attention to any symptoms of fatigue, depression or unexplained weight loss, and see a doctor as soon as possible for an evaluation. Too often many men have died of health conditions that could have been cured if they had sought help sooner.

What’s most important is that a man builds a strong relationship with a heath care provider he trusts and who takes the time to get to know him.

Defender: What can health care professionals do to encourage more men to see doctors on a regular basis?

Caesar/Levine: There are many things health care professionals can do to encourage more men to see their doctor. When men are seen for urgent care issues, such as colds

than they are to schedule an annual checkup. Families can be supportive and encouraging by letting the men in their lives know how much they are needed. Stressing the importance of men taking charge of their health will help to improve the health and longevity in their families, friends, communities and the world at large.

Placing articles like this one is also an important way to raise awareness with men and their loved ones about the importance of regular checkups. Friends can be more open and honest about their own health issues, hang-ups and how they overcame them. The community can sponsor workshops where men get together and talk about issues related to health as well the obstacles that prevent men from seeing doctors regularly.

Hypertension hits African-Americans

ypertension, more commonly known as high blood pressure, affects African-Americans at a disproportionately higher rate than other ethnicities in the United States. Moreover, AfricanAmericans develop high blood pressure at younger ages than other groups and TOICHA VINCENT, M.D. are more likely to suffer serious complications.

We often refer to hypertension as a “silent killer” because it usually presents no noticeable symptoms.

This makes early detection and prevention all the more crucial to avoiding serious medical outcomes such as stroke, kidney disease, impaired vision, heart disease, and a shortened life expectancy.

What is blood pressure?

“Blood pressure,” as the name suggests, is the pressure of blood circulating within blood vessels. A blood pressure reading is usually expressed in terms of systolic pressure (the top number) indicating how much pressure your blood is exerting against artery

walls when the heart beats, over diastolic pressure (the bottom number) indicating how much pressure your blood is exerting against artery walls while the heart is resting between beats.

Risk factors for high blood pressure Medical researchers are convinced that hypertension is triggered by one or more of the following risk factors: • Being overweight.

• Having diabetes.

• Having a sedentary lifestyle.

• Having a family history of high blood pressure.

• Consuming too much salt and fat. (African-Americans seem especially sensitive to salt, which is a confirmed risk factor.)

• Smoking or using nicotine-based products.

What you can do You can lower your risk of developing high blood pressure by following a few basic guidelines: • Eat a diet that includes more fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

• Get moving and exercise. Simply taking a brisk 20- to 30-minute walk most days of the week can help reduce blood pressure and

give you an overall sense of well-being.

• Mange your weight. A doctor can advise you or refer you to other healthcare professionals for assistance in setting up a weight-loss plan.

• Quit smoking or using nicotine in any form. Talk with a doctor about ways to help you quit.

• Limit, or avoid, alcohol consumption.

• Take doctor-recommended medications. A physician can prescribe medications to help manage high blood pressure.

Don’t try to self-monitor your blood pressure at supermarket kiosks. Acceptable blood pressure may vary from person to person and rise and fall with changes in physical activity or emotional state.

Physicians are your best source for determining a suitable range for your individual situation.

Too many African-Americans die each year from this disease. Be smart about your health. Have a medical checkup at least once a year. High blood pressure, when detected early, can be managed for healthier outcomes.

ccording to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 4.9 million non-Hispanic African- Americans aged 20 years or older have diabetes. Additionally, AfricanAmericans are 77 percent more likely to have diabetes compared to non-Hispanic Caucasians. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) says that if action is not taken, as many as one in three adult Americans will have diabetes by 2050. But don’t let the numbers scare you. Deshaun Watson demonstrates talent

t wasn’t so long ago that an AfricanAmerican quarterback in the NFL seemed little more than a novelty.

Pioneers like Marlin Briscoe, James Harris and Joe Gilliam were viewed as great athletes who were projects and might be capable of developing into an NFL quarterback. But today, the perception of the African-American quarterback in the NFL is much improved.

A recent story on ESPN’s The Undefeated titled “Welcome to the Year of the Black Quarterback” noted that the current highest paid player in the NFL is an African-American quarterback (Seattle’s Russell Wilson), and so is the reigning MVP (Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes) and this year No.1 overall draft pick (Arizona’s Kyler Murray).

Texans thirdyear quarterback Deshaun Watson is very much a part of this movement. Labeled as a dual threat whose skills didn’t translate to pro football when the Texans drafted Watson 12th overall in the 2017 NFL draft, he is now considered one of the top quarterbacks in the league.

Last season, Watson led the Texans to the AFC South division title and now with his growth as a QB and a leader of the franchise, the goals this season seem much loftier.

Watson, who has guided the Texans to a 1-1 start, ranks 21st in the league in passing with 427 yards, three touchdowns and one interception so far this season.

“We have a good football team,” Texans coach Bill O’Brien said. “We are never out of it, even when things aren’t going so good. If we can keep things within range, we are in every game. I think that is what Deshaun Watson gives us. He is a great football player.

He is competitive, calm and poised. He has all of that.”

Watson, who was one of nine African-American quarterbacks when the NFL season opened two weeks ago, helped the Texans escape Week 2 with a 13-12 win over Jacksonville. It wasn’t the best game statistically for Watson or the Texans, but to O’Brien’s point, Watson’s intangibles gave the team a chance to win in an otherwise disappointing outing.

Watson had a tackle-breaking two-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter that held up as a game-sealing play.

“He's a dynamic player. He did a really good job making plays,” said Texans offensive coordinator Tim Kelly. “He sees a lot of things on the field, he's instinctive, he plays hard.”

His leadership ability is one area that observers are watching this season. During Watson’s first two seasons, he seemed more inclined to defer to veterans. There are signs that Watson, who turned 24 on Sept. 14, is becoming more comfortable as a leader.

“Every year it grows, every week it grows, and every time you step on the field that's another opportunity to show your teammates what you can do on the field,” Watson said. “Before you can actually be a leader and say what you need to say and for people to listen, you have to go out there and prove yourself and perform. I feel like over the years, that's what I've been trying to do as much as I can, be out there, be a warrior for my team, for this city, for this organization and just taking it step by step, leading in a way that's comfortable for me, but also comfortable for the whole team and making sure everyone is on the same page.”

NCAA opposes college athlete endorsements Defender News Services

A new bill was passed in the California State Assembly recently that will make it allowable for college athletes in the state to earn money off their names, images and likenesses. But the bill is getting some major pushback from the NCAA. Senate Bill 206, also referred to as the Fair Pay to Play Act, is now on its way to Gov. Gavin Newsom and pro stars like LeBron James and Draymond Green have gotten behind it.

“Everyone in California,” tweeted James. “Call your politicians and tell them to support SB 206! This law is a GAME CHANGER. College athletes can responsibly get paid for what they do and the billions they create.”

On its website, the NCAA states that “Student-athletes may not receive any type of pay or compensation for play (either directly or indirectly) and cannot be involved in any commercial endorsements for a product, service or establishment.”

So for example, if a player’s jersey with his or her name on it hangs in a store, that person can’t make anything from it while others are able to profit greatly.

According to Sports Illustrated, the NCAA made $1.1 billion in 2017.

Popularity of NBA in China creates possibilities Defender News Services

The footprint of the NBA has grown at an extremely rapid pace over the last two decades in China, where more than 500 million people watched games last season and where one new streaming deal alone will pump $1.5 billion into the league's coffers over the next five years.

"When I first came here, I never thought the game in China would get to be this big," said former L.A. Laker star Kobe Bryant, who first visited in 1998. "But it has. And it's not going to stop."

The possibilities seem endless. Could there be an NBA team in China despite the travel that would be involved? Might there be two-way player contracts between the NBA and the Chinese Basketball Association? What about the NBA constructing a team to play in China or the Chinese sending a team for a full season in the U.S.?

Farfetched as all that may sound, keep in mind that 20 years ago no one envisioned the NBA-China relationship to be this big or that it would keep growing after Yao Ming's run with the Houston Rockets ended eight years ago. The NBA has academies in China now, and the Chinese national team returned to the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas this year.

The marriage between the NBA and the world's most populous country is stronger than ever. NBA officials say more than 300 million Chinese people play the game and 40 million are registered to play the 2K video game.

the organization’s board of governors, clearly want to keep the current rules in place. They signed a letter that was sent to Newsom and said if the bill becomes law it will erase the line between pro and college athletes.

“If the bill becomes law and California’s 58 NCAA schools are compelled to allow an unrestricted name, image and likeness scheme, it would erase the critical distinction between college and professional athletics and because it gives those schools an unfair recruiting advantage, would result in them eventually being unable to compete in NCAA competitions,” read the letter.

Sen. Nancy Skinner, who spearheaded the bill, responded to the NCAA’s letter and said it’s filled with nothing but desperate, empty threats.

“The NCAA has repeatedly lost anti-trust cases in courts throughout the nation,” Skinner said. “As a result, threats are their primary weapon.”

If the bill is signed by Newsom it would go into effect on Jan. 1, 2023.
