Report claims killings of Black men justified Defender News Services

There is a sentiment within the Black community that it is open season on Black men and they are killed by police and others with reckless abandon.

A new report shows there is a statistical basis for the belief that society and the legal system do not highly regard the lives of Black men.

The report, released by the Marshall Project, finds that when a white person kills a Black man in the U.S., frequently that person does not face any consequences. Although Harris survived the incident, his mother said the sense of fear and paranoia still lingers for him as he receives threatening phone calls and messages on social media. Charlottesville police have yet to arrest any suspects associated with the incident…….NEWLY RELEASED DASHCAM VIDEO of a violent traffic stop raises doubt about the official police version of the incident. According to the initial Euclid (Ohio) Police Department statement, Officer Michael Amiott pulled over Richard Hubbard III for suspicion of driving with a suspended license. The official version said he ignored the officer’s orders, but the new video shows the officer attacked Hubbard, 25, within seconds of ordering him to “face away.” It also shows that Amiott threw some punches while Hubbard’s arms were outstretched and he appeared not to resist. A bystander shot a video of the assault that circulated on social media before the police released the official dashcam video.

Some Republican leaders seem to tremble at the thought of publicly criticizing President Trump, even in the aftermath of his reaction to white supremacist groups, which critics viewed as supportive.

Former Republican Congressman J.C. Watts, who is Black, said his conscience would not permit him to remain silent on Charlottesville.

“However, if they are silent, they wear the cap, either intentionally or unintentionally, they wear the cap saying, ‘we agree with that.’ ” Watts praised several Republicans, including Sens. Rand Paul, John McCain, and Lindsey Graham, for disagreeing with Trump’s remarks on Charlottesville.

‘Isiah Factor’ goes prime time

For the past 16 years, KRIV-FOX 26 news reporter, Isiah Carey has been a staple in the Houston community. Now, his longevity and community commitment are paying off.

“The Isiah Factor” is already a popular segment on Fox 26. It started from Carey’s blog, which he created in 2005. Over the years, the blog became such a success, that it’s landed him here – with his own talk show, in nightly prime time.

Here, Carey talks with the Defender about what we can expect as “The Isiah Factor” goes prime time.

Defender: How would you describe your show, “The Isiah Factor” now that it will be a full-fledged daily show?

Isiah Carey: Almost as “infotainment,” where we have lots of information, regular news that people can use, and entertainment. We’ll also have lots of live guests. We’ll profile some of the newsmakers here “THE ISIAH FACTOR” in the city, entertainers that are already Monday-Friday, here and those that come in. It’s a 10:30-11 p.m. potpourri mix of things that can be editorialized. I have no constraints as KRIV, Fox26 host so it will be different from typical newscasts. I’ll get to give my opinion, say what I feel and have a good time.

Defender: Your show, as is, is one of the most popular segments on Fox 26. How did you start doing it?

Carey: It started as my blog back in 2005, called the Insite. It was just stuff I couldn’t get on TV. I’d put it on the blog or the website and basically talk about things on a day-to-day basis that I found interesting and relevant. Fox’s management decided to translate the blog to a oncea-week segment. Then it went to a daily segment, then five-15 minutes on Thursday’s at five, then half hour, then a full hour. Now, here we are today.

Defender: At a time when you see a lot of shows being cancelled, why do you think you’re not only surviving, but thriving?

Carey: I think it’s a combination of longevity – I’ve been in Houston since 2001, and being active in the community. I have done a lot of stories where I often get out and meet people. I’ve done an annual air conditioning drive for senior citizens. As I move into a full show, I thank God first. This is a blessing. All I ever imagined for myself was reporting during the week, and maybe anchoring on the weekends. To have a show with your name on it, doing what you love, I’m excited about that.

About Isiah Carey

Originally from Baton Rouge, La., Carey made his debut in front of the camera at the age of 5, on a weekly local segment called “Thought for the Day” on WVLA-TV. But it wasn’t until 1978 when, as a third-grade student, Carey realized that he wanted to be a reporter on TV. A local television journalist spoke to his class, and inspired Carey to contact a Baton Rouge TV station, asking for a summer job. He got the job and worked at that station every summer, for no credit, until he went away to college. Before graduating from Southern University in Baton Rouge, he was already a news anchor and a reporter for the city’s WXOK-AM Radio.

By 1990, Carey was the news director and anchor at KQXL-AM and WYCTFM, where he managed a small news staff. He earned his first real TV job as a reporter and Public Affairs talk show host at WVLA. In 1991, he re-joined WAFB-TV, the same station he shadowed as a third grader. He remained there for four years. He joined KRIV-TV in 2001.

Carey has won several awards, including an Emmy and an award from the Society of Professional Journalists.

Camp Logan remembered 100 years later

The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Houston riot of 1917 with six days of activities designed to tell the story of this not so known part of Houston’s history.

The riot, also known as the Camp Logan mutiny, involved soldiers from the all-Black 3rd Battalion, 24th Infantry, who were housed at an Army training camp at a site now primarily occupied

by Memorial Park.

On Aug. 23, 1917, Black soldiers from Camp Logan, incited by police violence earlier that day, armed themselves and marched into town. When the riot ended, four soldiers and 15 white civilians were dead. Numerous Black soldiers were eventually hung or received life sentences as punishment.

“My grandmother’s older brother Jesse [Ball] Moore was hanged without an appeal as being a participant in the riot,” Holder said. “The family didn’t know where his remains were until 1987 when Black soldiers were housed at Camp Logan when the Houston riot of 1917 occurred.

Upon learning the story of Camp Logan from her great aunt (the sister of Moore), Holder, at age 6, became determined to “find” her great uncle.

“My uncle and those other 12 men executed first did not have their cases reviewed, though no white citizens could identify them,” she said.

“Thirteen court marshals, no appeals for clemency. They were hung.”

By MARILYN MARSHALL Defender Do you wake up tired and irritable? Have you ever driven while drowsy? Do you nod off at work? If so, you could suffer from sleep deficiency, and robbing your body of needed rest can be hazardous to your health.

It’s estimated that a third of U.S. adults do not get enough sleep on a regular basis, and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends that adults aged 18 to 60 years sleep at least seven hours each night for optimal health and well-being. Here are 10 reasons why sleep matters:

Sleeping is a basic human need, like eating, drinking and breathing.

Although the amount of sleep you get each day is important, good sleep quality is also essential.

Signs of poor quality include not feeling rested even after getting enough sleep, repeatedly waking up during the night, and experiencing symptoms of disorders (such as snoring or gasping for air).

If you routinely sleep less than needed, the sleep loss adds up. The total amount lost is called your sleep debt. If you lose two hours of sleep each night, for example, you will have a sleep debt of 14 hours after a week.

During sleep, your body is working to support healthy brain function and maintain your physical health. In children and teens, sleep also helps support growth and development.

“With increasing numbers of Blacks entering professional and management roles in numerous industries, it is important to investigate and address the social factors contributing to the short sleep disparities in Blacks compared with whites in general, and particularly in professional settings,” said lead

Researchers analyzed eight years of data from nearly 137,000 U.S. adults. Based on self-reports, 30 percent of the respondents were considered “short sleepers,” sleeping less than seven hours a night; 31 percent were “optimal sleepers,” sleeping about seven hours a night; and 39 percent were “long sleepers,” sleeping more than 7 hours a night.

“Sleep patterns and behaviors change in children from birth to adulthood, with newborns sleeping an average of 16 hours per day,” she said. “There is a great deal of variability with the amount of sleep children should get, but this table is a good overall guide to use for recommended total sleep per day.”

• Toddlers, 1-2 years – 11-14 hours • Preschoolers, 3-5 years – 1013 hours • School-aged, 6-13 years – 9-11 hours • Teenagers, 14-17 years – 8-10 hours “It may be appropriate for some children to sleep an average of one to two hours more or less than the above mentioned recommendation, based on their genetic and physiological needs,” Armin said.

Recognize the benefits. According to Armin, sleep is crucial for children due to its impact on their mental and physical development. Bedtime is time for restoration and for young bodies to recharge and assimilate the information they have learned through-

out the day. “During deep non-REM sleep, energy to the body is restored, growth and repair occurs and important hormones are released which help brain development,” she said. “Sleep is essential to a healthy lifestyle. Reduced sleep has been linked to more illness and infections and a reduced capacity to do well in school.”

Be aware of common disorders. “The most common sleep disorders in children include nightmares, night terrors and insomnia,” Armin said. “Occasionally, children may have parasomnias (including sleep-talking and sleep-walking). This can sometimes run in families. Most sleep disorders are treated by

recommending good sleep hygiene and a consistent bedtime routine. One of the biggest sleep disruptors is the tendency of some children to go into the parents’ room in the middle of the night for comfort. Try to avoid this as much as possible. One other important factor to note is that children should not snore. Talk to your pediatrician if your child snores, as this may be a sign of sleep apnea and may be related to a medical problem.”

Be consistent. Armin said consistency is key when putting kids to bed. “Parents should make sure children go to sleep at a consistent time every night and wake up at approximately the same time every morning,” she said.

“This often becomes a little difficult in the summer months, but try to adhere to a schedule as much as possible.”

Avoid distractions. Kids’ bedrooms should promote proper rest. “Make sure there are no books or tablets/screens in bed, as this can confuse the body and keep it awake,” Armin said. “Another important element to keep in mind is to make the bedroom a good place for sleeping. This means keeping distracting elements – such as phones, flashing lights and TVs – out of the room and keeping the room dark.

Ensure children are eating a well-balanced diet and getting plenty of exercise as well.”

or a person diagnosed with cancer, sleeping well can be a problem. It’s estimated that 80 percent of cancer patients complain of poor sleep, and causes range from side effects of medicine to anxiety.

Dr. Dave Balachandran, medical director of the MD Anderson Sleep Center, said getting enough rest is essential.

“A good night’s sleep is good for everyone but in particular for cancer patients,” Balachandran said. “It has been shown that a good night’s sleep improves performance, cognition and memory.

“Although it has not been shown that improving sleep improves cancer outcomes or mortality, it has been shown to improve quality of life and may impact other symptoms such as pain and mood disturbance,” he said.

In a Q&A with the Defender, Balachandran discussed the causes of poor sleep, the most common disorders and steps cancer patients can take at bedtime.

Defender: Why is poor sleep often a problem among cancer patients?

Balachandran: There are many reasons why some cancer patients can’t sleep.

Poor sleep can be present prior to the patient being diagnosed, the results of therapy such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, stem cell transplant or surgery. A common postulated mechanism for poor quality sleep in cancer patients is inflammation.

Cancer in many ways is an inflammatory disease and can increase with inflammatory substances which can disturb sleep. In addition, cancer can change lifestyles and change behaviors which also promote poor quality sleep.

The trauma from hospitalization and the surgery itself along with pain and the side effects of anesthesia can lead to poor quality sleep, which can persist even after the surgery.

Chemotherapy is involved in killing cancer cells and can also increase inflammation. Once the patient has poor quality sleep during chemotherapy it can be difficult to restore normal, healthy sleep patterns.

Sleep disturbance in patients with cancer often incurs in conjunction with other cancer symptoms including nausea, pain and fatigue. These symptoms often cluster and interact with each other to continue the negative cycle of poor quality sleep.

Poor quality sleep affects every facet of a person’s life and can lead to daytime sleepiness and fatigue, which interferes with daytime functioning and

activities of daily living. In addition it has been linked with mood disturbances such as depression as well as anxiety.

Defender: What are the most common sleep problems seen in cancer patients and how are they treated?

Balachandran: The most common problem in cancer patients is insomnia. The treatments are divided into both pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatments. In our institution we try nonpharmacological treatments first as they are safer and have fewer side effects. The most important of these are improving sleep hygiene, which is a part of cognitive and behavioral therapy.

The behavioral part is improving sleep hygiene such as regularizing sleep timings, avoiding prolonged

naps and improving the sleep environment. The cognitive portion of the therapy involves identifying maladapted behaviors in thinking which can preclude a good night sleep.

There are a variety of pharmacological therapies for insomnia. There are both over-the-counter drugs and a variety of prescription medications. These medications can have many side effects, including decreased cognition, daytime drowsiness and accidents such as falls.

Again, at our institution we stress the use of nonpharmacological therapies. There are now a variety of interactive software and apps that can be used to track sleep and provide feedback to patients about the quality of sleep and promote good sleep hygiene and reinforce positive sleep behaviors.

Defender: What can a patient do to help ensure a better night’s sleep?

Balachandran: The most important thing is to follow a routine. Try to go to bed at the same time every day and wake up with the same time every morning. It’s okay to take a brief 20 to 30-minute nap but prolonged napping, especially near bedtime, will worsen nocturnal sleep. It’s important to follow the rules of good sleep hygiene including avoiding heavy exercise within two hours of bedtime, avoiding heavy meals before bedtime but not going to bed hungry either.

One thing cancer patients often lose is their nighttime routine as well as daytime routine. It is probably as important for them to keep a good daytime routine in terms of regular meals and exercise, which will help promote nocturnal sleep as it is to have a good bedtime routine and follow sleep hygiene rules.

Treating other cancer symptoms such as pain, nausea and vomiting is also essential to promoting a good night’s sleep. [In addition] we look for any metabolic disturbances such as hyperthyroidism which may interfere with sleep.

We also look for disturbances such as sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, leg movement disturbance, or circadian rhythm disturbance which may exacerbate or contribute to poor quality sleep.

Toxic stress and child development the child can develop symptoms very similar to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Toxic stress decreases the size and impairs the functioning of the regions of the brain responsible for learning, memory, executive functioning (prefrontal cortex, hippocampus). As a result, the child is placed at risk for having learning and behavior problems.

The child’s immune system is suppressed and puts the child at risk for developing a variety of chronic, lifelong health conditions including asthma, heart disease, stroke, autoimmune disease and cancer. The DNA is changed in such a way that the child’s gene expression affects bodily functions and can potentially be passed on to the next generation.

– Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa Children can experience a number of stressors throughout their childhood. It’s important to note not all stress is bad stress. There are generally three levels: • Positive stress • Tolerable stress • Toxic stress Positive stress refers to common, routine life events that may cause a temporary increase in our stress level from which we quickly recover.

Some examples in children include learning to ride a bicycle, getting immunizations at the doctor’s office or the first day of school. Each of these experiences is temporary and does not traumatize the child.

Tolerable stress refers to experiences that are potentially traumatic and cause significant levels of stress in a child that last longer and take more effort from which to recover. Examples include the death of a loved one or surviving a natural disaster. These experiences cause a child’s body to generate a stress response that lasts a bit longer.

Over time, the child’s mind and body recover from the experience because of the support of the caring adults around them.

Toxic stress refers to prolonged, traumatic life events that occur for an extended period of time in the child’s life without the protection of an adult. Examples of toxic stress can include abuse (physical, sexual, emotional), neglect (physical, emotional) and household dysfunction (parental mental illness, domestic violence, parental incarceration). In response to this prolonged exposure to toxic events, the child’s body produces a severe stress response that lasts for an extended period of time.

What is the stress response?

“One of the greatest diseases is to be nobody to anybody.” – Mother Teresa, nun/activist The stress response is our body’s natural

reaction to stressful events. The brain becomes aware of a potential threat and sends signals to the body to prepare for a potential need to take action: fight, flight (run away) or freeze (shut down).

The body in turn produces a number of stress hormones and neurotransmitters that increase the heart rate and respiratory rate, rev up the immune system, and prepare the mind and muscles to take action.

Our stress response is there to protect us from potential danger. However, when the stress response is activated over a long period of time due to prolonged traumatic experiences, the stress hormones begin to tear down the body’s organs and immune system in such a way that a child may develop severe, chronic health problems as an adult.

What are the consequences of toxic stress?

– Frederick Douglass, abolitionist The result of this extended stress response is that a child’s nervous system, immune system and even DNA are changed. Toxic stress causes the fear centers of the brain (limbic system, amygdala) to significantly increase in size, and

leep is one of our most fundamental needs. Though having an occasional bad night’s rest is common, a consistent pattern of poor sleep may indicate an underlying disorder that requires attention.

The Defender spoke with Puneet Patni, M.D., a board-certified critical care, pulmonary and sleep medicine doctor at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, on signs, symptoms, prevention, and treatment of the most common sleep disorders.

INSOMNIA

Causes: High levels of stress, certain medications, anxiety or depression, drugs or alcohol abuse.

Symptoms: Difficulty falling asleep and then maintaining that sleep. While everyone has a bad night of sleep every so often, insomnia is a chronic issue, not acute. Only a person suffering from insomnia symptoms for at least three months straight will be diagnosed with the disorder.

Prevention: Set a sleep schedule, avoid caffeine.

Treatment: Cognitive behavioral therapy and/ or medication are often prescribed.

Causes: Smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and when the upper airway between the level of the palate and vocal cords collapses during sleep.

Symptoms: Loud disruptive snoring, waking up choking or gasping, a bed partner observing you stopping breathing during sleep, frequent nighttime awakenings, waking with headaches, and being excessively sleepy or tired during the day.

Prevention: There is no way to prevent its development, however, maintaining optimal body weight reduces severity.

Treatment: Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy and some medications.

Symptoms: Can suddenly fall asleep at the most inopportune moments, excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy (a transient emotionally-triggered loss of muscle weakness), disrupted sleep and frequent nighttime awakenings, sleep paralysis, and hallucinations while falling asleep or waking up.

Prevention: There is no known way of preventing its occurrence, which typically takes place in the late teens or twenties.

Treatment: Involves stimulant medications as well as scheduled naps.

NARCOLEPSY

REM BEHAVIOR DISORDER

OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA

Causes: Have certain thyroid disorders, diabetes, an autoimmune disorder, and excessive sleepiness characterized by less effective separation of

the muscles in the body are suppressed during REM. Failure to suppress muscle function during REM can cause the disorder.

Symptoms: Engage in sleep talking, shouting, screaming, hitting or punching while having a dream in which there is some sort of struggle. Usually discovered by sleep partners or an in-lab sleep study.

Prevention: Adopting a predictable sleep-wake cycle to avoid sleep deprivation, avoiding alcohol, and removing potentially dangerous objects from bedroom.

Treatment: Taking medication such as clonazepam and melatonin and adapting to new sleep cycles.

RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME

Causes: Antidepressants, pregnancy, chronic diseases and medical conditions, including iron deficiency, Parkinson’s disease, kidney failure, and diabetes.

Tips for better sleep

Stick to a sleep schedule of the same bedtime and wake-up time, even on the weekends. This helps to regulate your body's clock and could help you fall asleep and stay asleep for the night.

Practice a relaxing bedtime ritual. A relaxing, routine activity right before bedtime conducted away from bright lights helps separate your sleep time from activities that can cause excitement, stress or anxiety which can make it more difficult to fall asleep, get sound and deep sleep or remain asleep.

Avoid naps, especially in the afternoon. Power napping may help you get through the day, but if you find that you can't fall asleep at bedtime, eliminating even short catnaps may help.

Exercise daily. Vigorous exercise is best, but even light exercise is better than no activity.

Evaluate your room. Design your sleep environment to establish the conditions you need for sleep. Your bedroom should be cool, between 60 and 67 degrees.

Your bedroom should also be free from any noise that can disturb your sleep and free from any light. Consider using blackout curtains, eye shades, ear plugs, “white noise” machines, humidifiers, fans and other devices.

Sleep on a comfortable mattress and pillows. Make sure your mattress is supportive.

Avoid alcohol, cigarettes or heavy meals in the evening. Alcohol, cigarettes and caffeine can disrupt sleep. Eating big or spicy meals can cause discomfort from indigestion that can make it hard to sleep. Avoid eating large meals for two to three hours before bedtime.

Avoid using electronic devices before bed or in the middle of the night.

Take work materials, computers and televisions out of the sleeping environment.

Set a bedtime that is early enough for you to get at least seven hours of sleep.

Prevention: Avoiding heavy meals and alcohol close to bedtime can help reduce the severity. Relaxation techniques, such as meditation or progressive muscle relaxation, help as well.

Treatment: Regular exercise; reduction in caffeine and alcohol. For severe cases, medication can be prescribed.

SLEEPWALKING

Causes: Lack of sleep or inefficient sleep, some medications, head injuries, and illness or fever.

Symptoms: Walking while sleeping. Other signs are difficulty waking.

Prevention: Meditation, getting more quality sleep, keeping sleeping environment quiet, dark and cool, and exercise.

Treatment: A quiet sleep environment, maintaining a regular sleep schedule, and reducing liquids near bedtime.

Insufficient sleep has been linked to the development and management of a number of chronic diseases and conditions: Cardiovascular disease – Persons with sleep apnea have been found to be at increased risk for a number of cardiovascular diseases. Hypertension, stroke, coronary heart disease and irregular heartbeats (cardiac arrhythmias) have been found to be more common among those with disordered sleep than their peers without sleep abnormalities. Likewise, sleep apnea and hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) appear to share some common physiological characteristics, further suggesting that sleep apnea may be an important predictor of cardiovascular disease.

Depression – The relationship between sleep and depression is complex. While sleep disturbance has long been held to be an important symptom of depression, recent research has indicated that depressive symptoms may decrease once sleep apnea has been effectively treated and sufficient sleep restored. It is important that the sleep sufficiency of persons with depression be assessed and that symptoms of depression be monitored

among persons with a sleep disorder.

Diabetes – Research has found that insufficient sleep is linked to an increased risk for the development of Type 2 diabetes. Specifically, sleep duration and quality have emerged as predictors of levels of Hemoglobin A1c, an important marker of blood sugar control. Recent research suggests that optimizing sleep duration and quality may be important means of improving blood sugar control in persons with Type 2 diabetes.

Obesity – Laboratory research has found that short sleep duration results in metabolic changes that may be linked to obesity. Epidemiologic studies have also revealed an association between short sleep duration and excess body weight. This association has been reported in all age groups, but has been particularly pronounced in children. It is believed that sleep in childhood and adolescence is particularly important for brain development and that insufficient sleep in youngsters may adversely affect the function of a region of the brain known as the hypothalamus, which regulates appetite and the expenditure of energy.

Breast cancer screenings save lives

s Breast Cancer Awareness Month approaches, it’s a good time for women to remember their annual mammograms.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States. The American Cancer Society estimates more than 250,000 cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2017, and more than 40,000 women will die from the disease.

The goal of regular breast cancer screening is to identify cancers at an early stage, when the chances for successful treatment are highest.

MD Anderson recommends most women have annual mammograms beginning at the age of 40. For certain women with a family history of disease, genetic mutations or other risk factors, recommendations may be different.

“Routine breast screenings save lives,” said Therese Bevers, M.D., medical director of MD Anderson’s Lyda Hill Cancer Prevention Center. “Studies have shown that regular mammograms can reduce deaths from breast cancer by nearly 30 percent.”

After her 40th birthday, Stacey Fields realized it was time to have her first mammogram, but she was not excited about it.

“I’d heard from friends and family that they could be painful and scary, so I was hesitant and had lots of questions,” said Stacey. “I worried about everything from hygiene to how I would react to the test results.”

After doing a bit of research and talking to her family, Stacey gathered the courage to make the call to MD Anderson’s Cancer Prevention Center.

Those ‘suspicious’ results may only be suspicious because the doctors don’t have earlier images to make comparisons. The additional images they obtain in follow-up tests help them to better see areas that may have been unclear initially and need further examination.”

Meanwhile Suzanne’s husband, Anthony, was getting no response from his routine calls to his wife from work. Worried that something was wrong, he called Suzanne’s sister to check on her.

An hour later, Suzanne was found and rushed by ambulance to Harris Health System’s Ben Taub Hospital. Staff suspected she was suffering a stroke.

Neurological experts believe “time is brain” when providing life-saving care to stroke sufferers, and Suzanne was suffering the most severe type of stroke – a large blockage to a main brain artery. Her prognosis for permanent disabilities, even death, was almost certain.

“I thought, ‘why are they asking me dumb questions?’ ” she recalls. “I had no idea what had happened or that I had suffered a stroke.”

Remarkably, Suzanne made a complete recovery showing no signs of lost cognitive ability or memory loss. She did have a slight loss of control to her left side, but that soon improved. However, complications from a heart condition that triggered her stroke did result in significant blood clots to her left leg that necessitated its amputation above the knee.

“That’s a small price to pay for having my wife back,” Anthony Moffett happily explained. “I know she’s a little depressed about losing her leg, but to me

having her alive is all that matters. I thank God and the staff at Ben Taub Hospital for what they did for Suzanne. She’s my everything.”

etabolic syndrome, sometimes called Syndrome X, is a cluster of risk factors that can raise your chance for heart disease, diabetes and stroke.

And it’s becoming a major Evette Kingcaid, M.D. problem among AfricanAmericans, especially women.

Having even one of the risk factors for metabolic syndrome isn’t ideal, but it takes three or more for an official diagnosis. Your risk increases with the number of risk factors, which include: • Being overweight, especially around the midsection.

• High blood pressure or being on medicine for high blood pressure.

• High blood sugar or being on medicine for high blood sugar.

• High triglycerides (a type of fat in the blood) or

being on medicine for high triglycerides.

• Low good cholesterol (HDL) or being on medicine for low HDL.

Race may play a part

African-Americans are at particularly high risk for metabolic syndrome: • More than 40 percent of U.S. blacks have high blood pressure. That’s among the highest of any group in the world.

• More than 63 percent of African-American men and 77 percent of African-American women are overweight.

• 5 million African-Americans have diabetes.

Certain factors can increase your chances for metabolic syndrome. These include: • Age: As you age, your risk increases.

• A family history of metabolic syndrome.

• Smoking.

• Lack of exercise.

Divide and conquer your risks

Making changes to the way you live may help prevent some of the risk factors from developing.

Even if it doesn’t prevent or help reverse metabolic syndrome, you’ll still be taking positive steps to

improve your health.

Your first step is to learn your numbers – cholesterol, blood pressure, weight and blood sugar.

Then work with your doctor to keep them where they should be. This may require medicine and some changes in your lifestyle.

Good old-fashioned advice that helps keep you healthier in general also will help prevent or improve metabolic syndrome: • Eat healthy. Your doctor can help with specific diet recommendations.

• Lose some weight.

• Exercise and be more active throughout the day.

Research has found that people who regularly exercise reduce their risk of chronic health problems, including Type 2 diabetes and some types of cancer.

• Don’t smoke.

Finding out you’re at risk of metabolic syndrome can be a wake-up call to come up with a better formula for healthy living.

Activist, comedian Dick Gregory dead at 84 Defender News Services

Legendary civil rights activist and comedian Dick Gregory died on Aug. 19 at age 84. Friends, family and celebrities took to social media to honor the icon and innovator.

“It is with enormous sadness that the Gregory family confirms that their father, comedic legend and civil rights activist Mr. Dick Gregory departed this earth tonight in Washington, D.C.,” said his son Christian Gregory in a statement posted on Facebook.

Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr., president and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, paid homage to Gregory.

“We salute and honor the living legacy of freedom fighter Dick Gregory. RIP,” Chavis wrote on Twitter.

Born Richard Claxton “Dick” Gregory in St. Louis in 1932, Gregory became a comedian whose social satire changed the way whites perceived African-American comics.

He entered the national comedy scene in 1961 when Chicago’s Playboy Club – as a direct request from publisher Hugh Hefner – booked

him as a replacement for a white comedian.

According to Gregory’s biography, “By 1962 he had become a nationally known headline performer, selling out nightclubs, making numerous national television appearances, and recording popular comedy albums.”

He later became a vegetarian, gave up drinking and smoking, and decided to no longer work in venues that sold alcohol. In 1984, he founded a company

that distributed weight-loss products, including Dick Gregory’s Slim Safe Bahamian Diet, a powdered diet product.

Gregory continued to fight for justice through the years, and spoke out on issues ranging from police brutality to world famine.

Survivors include his wife Lillian and 10 children.

UT Austin removes Confederate statues

he University of Texas at Austin has removed the statues of four figures tied to the Confederacy, as the school’s president said they had become symbols of white supremacy.

UT President Greg Fenves abruptly announced that the statues would be removed, saying such monuments have become “symbols of modern white supremacy and neo-Nazism.” After his announcement, crews worked through the night amid a heavy police presence.

The school blocked off the area, and some arguments occurred among those gathered. But all the statues of Lee, Confederate Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston and Confederate Postmaster General John H. Reagan were successfully taken down.

By late morning, people walking by were stopping to gawk at the four pedestals, empty except for some construction debris and the bolts that once held the statues in place.

Some snapped selfies, while a few climbed up the structures where the statues once stood.

The scene remained peaceful and the area largely deserted. The university doesn’t begin classes until next week.

Fenves said the statues would be moved to the Briscoe Center for American History on campus. The university in 2015 moved a statue of former Confederate President Jefferson Davis from its perch near the campus clock tower, the same area as the other statues, to the history museum.

As the statues were being taken down, less than 30 people, both supporters and opponents of Fenves’ order, congregated behind barricades near the statues. Among them was Mark Peterson, who identified himself as a University of Houston student. He was seething at the removal of the statues.

“I hate the erasure of history and my people’s history... people of European descent who built this country,” the 22-year-old said. “It burns me to my core.”

Mike Lowe, an activist for the removal of Confederate statues in San Antonio, was driving to Dallas when he heard the statues were coming down, turned around and drove to campus. Lowe, who is African-American, engaged in a brief but tense argument with a white male protester until police stepped in to separate them.

“They have no other reasons than ‘you are erasing our history.’ Their reasoning is flawed. These monuments represent white supremacy, and Black lives haven’t mattered in this county the same as a white man’s matters,” the 37-year-old Lowe said.

What about Houston confederate statues?

Mayor Sylvester Turner has asked top staff members to study whether statues related to the Confederacy should be removed from city property. The mayor commented about the statues at a recent City Council meeting after members of the public urged the city to remove them from public spaces because they honor slavery and racism.

Staff members will compile an inventory of the statues and “provide me with recommendations about what steps we need to take,” Turner said.

“It is my hope that we can, in a very positive and constructive way, move forward,” Turner added.

Olympic champ Simone Biles weighs options Associated Press

Simone Biles is back in the gym.

That’s it. That’s all.

The Olympic gymnastics champion from Spring is in no hurry to declare

the perks of her newfound celebrity.

Life is starting to calm down a little.

Her family is working on turning one of the rooms in the massive gym and lifestyles center they opened in 2015 into Biles’ personal office. That kind of sounds like a job, which Biles insists it’s not. “[Mom] better not tie me too much to the gym,” Biles said. “I’m not trying to

be there all the time unless I’m training.”

Which she’s currently doing, just not nearly at her pre-Olympic level.

For now she’ll just wake up each morning, figure out how she feels, go to the gym and kind of make it up as she goes.

“I’m still getting my body right and see how I feel,” she said. “Yeah, testing the waters basically.”

Herman’s reward was a promotion to Austin to coach the Longhorns. In stepped offensive coordinator and Texas ex Major Applewhite to guide the Cougars’ fortunes for the next five years.

If you’re looking for a reason to get excited about the 2017 Cougars start with the defense. Despite losing several key players to the NFL and graduation, they return sophomore All-American Ed Oliver, the most dominant defensive lineman in college football.

Oliver led all returning defensive linemen nationally with 23 tackles for loss in 2016. He finished second nationally among all positions in tackles for loss last season while leading all defensive linemen nationally with nine pass breakups. Oliver also led all non-defensive backs in the American Athletic Conference and was sixth in the league regardless of position.

When Dawson plays it doesn’t take long to see what role Johnson fills for the Eagles. A big smile adorns Karim’s face when asked to describe one of the Houston area’s top impact players.

“The first thing that comes to mind is explosiveness,” he said. “Athletically she’s quite a talent. Her vertical is through the roof and she really provides that pop on offense for us.

“What’s really changed from last year to this year is she’s thinking about what she wants to do before she does it,” Karim said. “It’s not just explode and hit the ball as hard as she can anymore.

“She’s placing the ball and thinking through what she’s doing. It’s made her a much more deadly hitter,” Karim said.

With upcoming matchups against George Ranch, Pearland, Alief Taylor, Hastings, Elsik and Brazoswood, Karim feels good about the state of his star player.

“She already knows where she’s going to college and she has the rest of this year and all of her senior year to finish off a very nice high school career,” he said.

A first-team all-district and all-academic performer, now the 5-foot-11 junior outside hitter has her sights set on another goal as Dawson prepares for the teeth of its District 23-6A schedule.

The No. 3 area-ranked Eagles have just finished off a successful early-season run that includes wins over Katy Taylor, Summer Creek, defending regional champion Clear Creek and six wins in eight outings at the prestigious 78-team John Turner Volleyball Classic.

“I definitely want to go undefeated and win district,” said Johnson, a three-year starter on varsity. “Then go all the way to state because we get close almost every year but we’ve never actually gone.

“We have a lot of seniors on our team and I would like to accomplish going to the state tournament and winning the title for them,” Johnson said.

The 2017 Dawson Eagles appear to be on the right track. Fort Bend Elkins has only missed the playoffs once since 2009 and Willowridge aims to make back-to-back postseason appearances following a seven-year drought. Texas City and Galveston Ball are no strangers to playoff success.
