KTSU faces funding crisis after cuts to public broadcasting

The decision by the U.S. Congress to eliminate more than $1 billion in funding for public broadcasting is more than a budgetary blow — it’s a direct hit to stations like KTSU 90.9FM, the heart of community radio at Texas Southern University.

For 53 years, the station has delivered jazz, blues, gospel, and hip-hop to Houston’s airwaves, amplifying Black voices, preserving culture and providing trusted news coverage. Now, it’s facing a 20% operating budget cut that could silence its signature sound.

A threat to community voices “We’re already working on a shoestring budget,” said KTSU General Manager Ernest Walker. “These cuts will hurt. Not just us — but the communities we serve.”

Last year, KTSU received $203,000 from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), a vital supplement to its $2 million operating budget. The station is among 14 HBCU-run public stations nationwide that rely on CPB funding to remain on the air.

Now, that money is gone — along with more than $17 million in CPB grants sent to public TV and radio stations across Texas in 2024. The defunding bill, passed by the House 216-213 and backed by all 25 Texas Republicans (including Sens. Ted Cruz and John Cornyn), advances to President Donald Trump’s desk for final approval.

Most public media grants will end by October.

Cuts to culture and coverage KTSU’s reach extends far beyond the TSU campus. With streaming audiences in Los Angeles, New York and even abroad, the station serves as both a cultural archive and a vital news lifeline for underserved communities.

“We are here to serve the people. That’s what public radio is,” Walker said. “But if the people don’t help, we’ll have to make tough decisions — including cutting staff and canceling the programs that people love.”

The cost of operating KTSU’s two stations, year-round programming and numerous community events depends heavily on

listener and grant support. Without it, the award-winning coverage, local music curation and public service announcements that listeners have come to depend on are at risk.

‘You can give something’ Walker is urging the community to step up.

“Everybody can do something,” he said.

“Some can give thousands, others $5 or $10 a month. Every dollar counts.”

Donations go directly toward programming, technology, personnel and outreach — the things that keep KTSU’s mission alive. And it’s a mission that’s deeply personal for many.

“When I think of 53 years, I remember

listening as a child, especially on Gospel Sundays. KTSU was a tradition in our house — and in so many others,” said Walker. “We are here to serve the underserved communities, and that’s what KTSU is truly about. We can’t let that legacy die.”

A legacy worth preserving For comedian and proud Houston native Ali Siddiq, KTSU is more than a station — it’s family.

“You don’t forget who poured into you,” he said, in a message of support for the station that helped shape his career.

The station is calling on TSU alumni, local listeners and public radio supporters nationwide to help fill the funding gap.

“We can’t quiet our voices now,” Walker said. “We preserve our heritage, our culture.

We educate, inspire and entertain — and we do it for the people.”

Ruling returns medical debt to credit reports

A federal judge has overturned a Biden-era Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) rule that would have erased unpaid medical debt from consumer credit reports — a move expected to affect nearly 15 million Americans.

U.S. District Judge Sean Jordan, a Trump appointee, ruled that the CFPB lacked statutory authority under the Fair Credit Reporting Act to implement the sweeping change.

He sided with two credit industry trade groups — the Cornerstone Credit Union League and the Consumer Data Industry Association — which had sued the agency, alleging overreach.

The rule, finalized by the CFPB in January shortly before the end of the Biden administration, would have removed an estimated $49 billion in medical debt from credit reports, lifting scores by about 20 points for millions and potentially enabling 22,000 additional mortgage approvals annually.

“The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau exceeded its authority in banning medical debt from credit reports,” Jordan wrote, echoing industry concerns that the

change would alter the accuracy and completeness of credit data.

The CFPB, created by Congress in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, argued that

medical debt is a poor predictor of creditworthiness and disproportionately burdens Black and Latino consumers. The new rule had been designed to curtail reporting of such debt and prevent lenders from considering it in credit decisions.

Industry groups countered that excluding medical debt would deprive lenders of essential information, risking incomplete credit assessments.

Experian, Equifax and TransUnion had already eliminated medical debt under $500 from reports last year and extended reporting grace periods, but full implementation of the Biden-era rule would have barred all unpaid medical bills.

Supporters of the rule noted that nearly 20% of Americans have at least one medical debt in collections, with such debt accounting for more than half of all collection accounts.

Studies by the CFPB and consumer advocates show that medical debt is often erroneous and stems from one-time emergencies.

Tom Ramsey HARRIS COUNTY LEADERS SERIES

Keeps county governance grounded

Harris County Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey describes his technical background as ideal preparation for the job. Before becoming a commissioner, Ramsey served as Mayor of Spring Valley Village from 2012 to 2020.

Ramsey earned a civil engineering degree from Texas A&M and spent 45 years designing infrastructure across Texas. Growing up in Crockett with a hometown pastor for a father, Ramsey says he brings both precision and moral conviction to his approach as a public servant.

Elected to the Harris County Commissioners Court in 2020, Ramsey represents a rapidly growing section of the county that includes

parts of Cypress, Tomball and unincorporated Northwest Houston. The majority of his precinct lies outside of city limits.

A Republican in a county that is increasingly Democratic, Ramsey says, political labels do not define his service.

Public safety With 75% of his precinct in unincorporated areas, Ramsey pushed to expand Harris County’s contract deputy program, which allows communities to directly fund additional law enforcement patrols through partnerships with constables and the sheriff’s office. Today, the crime rate in the unincorporated area is five times less than it is in the city of Houston, he added.

But Ramsey is quick to point out that success doesn’t come easy.

“If there is no patrol in the neighborhood, if the response to a crime 9-1-1 call takes 30 minutes, that’s not safe. We can do better,” he added.

Infrastructure funding Ramsey’s other major frustration has been what he sees as an unfair distribution of infrastructure funding. Despite being responsible for 47% of all unincorporated Harris County, 6,750 lane miles of roadway, 69 parks, 10 Community and Nature Centers and nine hike and bike trails and the nation’s longest urban-forested corridor, the precinct receives 19% of the funds.

“That’s just not fair,” he said. “I’ve had four or five years of frustration and being underfunded, having these responsibilities, but not having the resources to respond.”

However, after years of advocacy at the Texas Capitol and legislative pressure, the Commissioners Court recently approved a new funding formula to increase Precinct 3’s allocation to 33% beginning in fiscal year 2026.

Flood mitigation With extreme weather becoming more common, Ramsey says disaster readiness is a core responsibility of county government.

In 2023 alone, his precinct faced three major weather events, including severe flooding and the derecho storm that left widespread debris.

“We picked up over a million cubic yards of debris,” Ramsey recalled. “We are very well organized and try to be vigilant.”

He’s also critical of how the 2018 flood bond program dollars, a $2.5 billion voter-approved initiative, have been distributed. Per the bond, the Harris County Flood Control District has to complete mitigation projects over 10 years.

Ramsey says too many of the highest-priority or Quartile 1 projects, which are scored based on drainage levels and social vulnerability indexes, are going to areas outside his precinct. However, Precinct 3 sees 75% of the regional water flow.

“When they put more than half the money in Quartile 1 and I get the fewest number of projects, I’m gonna say something,” Ramsey

clarified. “We’re not gonna mistreat homes in Precinct 3 just because they’re in Precinct 3.”

On social services and spending Ramsey voted against the now-defunct Uplift Harris program, a guaranteed income pilot that would have allowed participating households to receive $500 per month for 18 months. It was blocked due to ongoing litigation filed by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

“Why did they (other commissioners) do that? Was it to get 80,000 phone numbers?” he asked. “That program was never about poverty or helping anybody.”

Ramsey says the county should instead rely more on nonprofit partners and stay focused on its statutory duties, such as courts, law enforcement and flood control.

Legacy As Harris County continues to evolve politically and demographically, Ramsey insists his core mission won’t change: to listen to people. Even today, he gives out his personal phone number to anyone he meets.

“I actually answer the cell phone,” he said.

“It would be that dirt-kicking civil engineer from Crockett that actually answers the phone. And when you need something fixed, I’ll come fix it.”

Legislative session delivers wins for Houston

Houston is poised for a new era of growth, thanks to victories secured during the 89th Texas Legislative Session.

From investments in water infrastructure to education and housing reforms amounting to more than $200 million, state lawmakers debated a slate of bills that will directly impact the city’s economy and Houstonians’ quality of life.

“In all my time in public service, this has been the most successful legislative session for the City of Houston,” said Mayor John Whitmire. “At the end of the day, Houstonians will benefit for years to come. My administration will continue to focus on quality of life issues while prioritizing infrastructure and public safety.”

Houston’s water and flood protection

Lawmakers approved a constitutional amendment to funnel up to $1 billion annually (Senate Bill 7 and House Joint Resolution 7) into a new Texas Water Fund, money that could help Houston pay for everything from aging pipeline replacements to new f lood-control reservoirs. Additionally, House Bill 500, the supplemental appropriations bill, provides a $2.5 billion one-time appropriation to the fund. Voters will weigh in this November as city leaders already line up priority projects.

The legislative session also unlocked more than $265 million directly for Houston-area water and flood infrastructure.

That includes $100 million to upgrade the Lynchburg Pump Station, $50 million to continue dredging Lake Houston to reduce flooding risk and $60 million to repair the Lake Livingston Dam, critical to Houston’s water supply.

Streets and public safety

Houston secured $10 million to replace aging police vehicles and an additional $10 million for the Sergio Ivan Rodriguez Memorial Pedestrian Bridge over train tracks near Milby High School. The bridge honors the Milby student who tragically lost his life while walking to school and provides a safer route for students in the East End. City crews will also ramp up enforcement on “bandit signs” cluttering public spaces, thanks to HB 3611, which hiked up

penalties on repeat offenders. The city of Houston considers bandit signs illegal and violators can face fines between $300 and $500, court action and even arrest warrants for violating the city’s code of ordinances.

Education investments and new school options

Education funding received the limelight this session, passing HB 2, injecting roughly $8.5 billion in new state funding into K-12 education, which equates to additional dollars for Houston-area school districts.

In a major policy shift, SB 2 created Texas’s first state-funded Education SavSav ings Account (ESA) program, often called the “school voucher bill.” Starting with the 2026–27 school year, eligible families can use about $10,000 per stu student in public funds for private school tui tuition. in Houston pushed for school choice, while opponents said the law might disproportionately impact underserved students.

However, the legislature also passed SB 12, which bans K-12 school districts from having diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) offices or programs. It bans schools from allowing student clubs to have clubs based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

Climate resilience

Houston also stands to gain from major climate resilience measures. HB 1089 created a Gulf Coast Protection Account to ensure Texas pays its share of the “Ike Dike,” a proposed $57 billion system of gates and seawalls to protect the Galveston Bay and Houston region from catastrophic hurricane storm surges. The Texas legislature has appropriated $950 million (toward its $20 billion share) and the federal government has allocated half a million (toward its $37 billion share).

Lawmakers also passed HB 1584 (Rep. Lacey Hull), which ensures electric utilities prioritize power restoration to facilities like hospitals, water plants and police stations after storms. This decision follows disasters like Hurricane Ike and Winter Storm Uri. Other wins include $1.8 billion in new grants for backup power systems at critical sites.

Texas Redistricting How we got here and where we are headed

According to state lawmakers and community leaders, the current GOP-led effort to redraw Texas’ congressional voting maps—five years ahead of schedule—threatens to silence the voices and votes of millions of Black and Hispanic Texans.

The stakes are high. This unprecedented political move, reportedly ordered by President Donald Trump, could set a national precedent for mid-cycle redistricting, potentially protecting the Republicans’ U.S. House control after the 2026 midterms. Many political scientists believe the Republicans are in danger of losing the House due to the national unpopularity of several Trump policies.

How did we get here?

Redistricting—redrawing state congressional maps—has historically followed the U.S. Census, mandated once a decade since 1790. In 235 years, only once (in 1920) did redistricting not follow a census. But in 2025, Texas is set to buck that trend.

The 2020 Census revealed that 95% of Texas’ population growth came from communities of color, particularly Hispanic/ Latino and Black Texans. The state’s population grew by nearly 4 million between 2010 and 2020. The Hispanic/Latino population grew by nearly 2 million, the Black population grew by over 550,000 and the white population increased by only 187,000.

“This is a national-based issue.

For Dr. James Dixon, president of the NAACP Houston Branch, the issue is personal and urgent.

“You must vote because SNAP is being cut, Medicaid, Medicare,” said Dixon. “Your grandmother, your grandfather, your parents will suffer if you don’t stand up and vote...

We’ve got to make it a priority.”

Recourse and resistance State Sen. Molly Cook (Dist. 15) and State Rep. Jolanda Jones (Dist. 147) proposed several strategies to push back:

• Breaking quorum again.

• Filing new lawsuits.

• Demanding statewide hearings that include actual redistricting draft maps.

Activists and lawmakers also urge voter education, mass turnout, and community organizing to combat disenfranchisement.

“Call your elected officials. Talk to your neighbors. And vote like your life depends on

it—because for many, it does,” said one local organizer after the Houston hearing.

Texas has always been a political bellwether, and this year it’s on the frontlines of a fight over representation, power and race.

Whether the redistricting push succeeds may not only determine the balance of power in Congress—it may also shape the future of American democracy.

Lilian Bodunrin Pushes Black maternal health through Doula support

When Lilian Bodunrin first learned about the alarming maternal mortality rates among Black women, she felt a pull that could not be ignored.

As a certified birth and postpartum doula and owner of Lili Doula Birth Services, she cares for women at one of the most vulnerable times of their lives.

A doula is a non-medical professional who provides physical, emotional and informational support to people during pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Black women face higher pregnancy-related complications and mortality rates than white women due to unknown health conditions, inequitable care access and structural racism within the healthcare system. Culturally based doulas are filling in the gap in maternal care.

“Once I discovered the maternal health rates for women of color, it was so disheartening,” Bodunrin said. “I wanted to be a part of the change, making sure women have the best opportunity not to lose their lives while bringing in life.”

Her journey into advocacy and support was “divinely” inspired.

“From a young age, I was often in peculiar situations where people would open up to me. I realized I had a gift to encourage people and help them navigate trauma,” she said.

“When the opportunity arose to train as a doula, it felt like a calling. I just felt like God drew me to it and told me, ‘This is where I’m placing your feet.’”

The work is deeply rooted in personal and collective experiences. She heard stories about Black women feeling unheard in the

medical space. Tragically, these stories are not just anecdotal; they represent systemic healthcare inequities.

“As an African American woman, I’ve been in doctor’s offices where I wasn’t heard.

Decisions were made without truly understanding my needs,” Bodunrin said. “I want to make sure women know their rights and can make informed decisions about their care.”

While Bodunrin’s work begins in the birthing room, it extends far beyond labor and delivery. Mental health support is a cornerstone of her approach, addressing a gap that often goes unnoticed.

“Perinatal and postpartum mental health is so important,” she said. “Pregnancy and fertility journeys change your neurological system, and it’s crucial for women to recognize when they need help.”

Bodunrin normalizes conversations about mental health, encouraging her clients to voice their emotions and seek support when needed. She equips them with resources for postpartum depression, anxiety, or even postpartum rage. She wants to destigmatize getting professional help during challenging life situations.

Among the many families who have benefited from Bodunrin’s expertise, John-Patrick and Azah Egbo shared their transformative experiences during their first pregnancy. As

a first-time mother, Azah sought out a doula to navigate the overwhelming new terrain of pregnancy and postpartum. Choosing Bodunrin, a trusted member of their community, became a natural decision.

“Lilian is a bank of knowledge when it comes to all things pregnancy and postpartum,” Azah said. “From providing a parent binder packed with resources to asking thought-provoking questions that helped us map out what we wanted for our journey, she kept us informed and prepared every step of the way.”

When the couple decided to have a home

birth, Bodunrin’s support became even more essential.

“We knew a home birth might come with challenges,” John-Patrick said. “But with Lilian’s guidance, we felt confident and equipped to pursue the birth experience we wanted.”

Azah recalled one particularly nerve-wracking moment during her pregnancy: “There was a phase where I experienced really alarming symptoms. I didn’t call my doctor first—I called Lilian. She calmly explained what might be happening, reassured me, and advised me to follow up with my doctor. That level of calm and knowledge was exactly what I needed.”

Willie Belle Boone remembered

The late Willie Belle Boone is being remembered as a powerful political activist and committed volunteer who made a lasting impact in Southeast Houston and beyond. She died July 15 at the age of 93.

Boone lived in the Sunnyside area for more than 60 years and was known as a neighborhood advocate and civic leader. Boone was the founder and president of the Southeast Precinct Judges Council. She established the Reynolds Elementary School PTO and the school’s library was named in her honor.

She believed in the power of the vote and served as treasurer of the State Democratic Party and Harris County Democratic Party. She was also a member of the State Democratic Executive Committee for Senate District 13 and a representative in the Texas Silver Haired Legislature.

Boone’s background includes working as a community liaison in Rodney Ellis’s State Senate and Harris County Commissioner offices and Congressman Ken Bentsen’s office, as an administrator with the Harris County Clerk’s Office and the Teamsters Union.

She was a charter member of the National

Council of Negro Women, Barbara Jordan Houston Section and the South Post Oak Redevelopment Authority Board. She was also a member of the Top Ladies of Distinction, Missouri City/Houston Space City Chapter, National Women of Achievement, NAACP and UNCF. Additionally, Ellis honored her in the inaugural class of Living Legends in 2021.

Boone was a native of Beaumont. She was often accompanied by her husband of 59 years, Jesse Boone, who died in 2024. Survivors include her granddaughter, Geneva Williams and “special son,” Charles Foster.

TSU remains silent on Kevin Granger

The college football season is a month away from kicking off, yet the direction of the Texas Southern athletic department is up in the air, while athletic director Kevin Granger remains on administrative leave as he faces sexual assault charges and a $1 million lawsuit brought in the spring by a staffer.

Texas Southern officials have remained tight-lipped about the criminal and internal investigations that began in late spring.

The school provided little information in terms of where it is in the investigation, when TSU first learned of the sexual assault claims and when a decision is expected on Granger’s job status.

The Tigers’ football season kicks off in less than a month when they take on rival Prairie View in the annual Labor Day Classic (Aug. 30). Both schools’ presidents and athletic directors are always involved in the buildup to the clash, but it seems unlikely that Granger will have a role unless the school and criminal investigation wraps up soon.

The Defender requested a meeting with TSU President J.W. Crawford III or anyone in a decision-making capacity, but after days of waiting for a response, the school sent an unsigned statement.

The pending legal matter involving a senior leader in Texas Southern University’s Division of Intercollegiate Athletics has understandably generated questions within our community. As the university allows the legal process to unfold in the manner our democracy requires with care and due process, we remain focused on our mission to uphold the high standards of character and professionalism that define Texas Southern University athletics.

The vital work of the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics continues without interruption. The mission we carry, to shape student-athletes into scholars, leaders, and community role models, remains unchanged. Until further notice, the Division reports to the Office of the Chief Financial Officer. Day-to-day operations are being executed under the direction of Assistant Athletic Director Kimberly Evans.

Otherwise, there has been silence from TSU and its officials since word first came out in May that a staffer had made claims alleging Granger made vulgar sexual advances toward her before groping her in private areas, before ultimately propositioning her in his office on April 29.

The Defender sent an initial Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to Texas Southern’s Office of General Counsel on May 30 and a follow-up request on June 6, requesting public records accounts of

the assault against athletic director Kevin Granger. The request sought to know when human resources was informed of the incident, what HR was told by the accuser, Granger’s response to the allegation, whether other accusers have ever come forward against Granger and Granger’s official employment status with the university.

TSU didn’t respond to the Defender’s FOIA request until June 30, providing information as to why it could not comment on certain questions that came after the complainant made her official complaint to the courts on June 2. According to TSU, the FOIA requests from the Defender were made on June 4 and June 6, but documents that TSU sent show that the Defender’s initial FOIA request was made on May 30. Texas Southern says that because the request came in after the lawsuit was filed on June 2 and is currently pending, it does not have to make available the requested information.

TSU General Counsel Charlie Nhan,

however, says that June 2 was the first time the university had any knowledge of a sexual assault claim against Granger. Court records show that the complainant filed a $1 million civil lawsuit against Granger on June 2. The criminal complaint came shortly thereafter.

“Once we get that, we initiate a Title IX investigation,” Nhan said to the Defender.

“We also asked an outside law firm to conduct an HR investigation. And based on what we can tell so far, the investigation is still ongoing, based on what we can tell from the record that we have.”

But when asked about why the initial brief failed to answer when TSU first learned of the sexual assault claim against Granger, Nhan responded, “We don’t have to say that. We don’t have to say everything on here. We don’t have to tell everything in a legal brief.”

Nhan went on to say that neither party, the complainant nor Granger, filed complaints with the school about any of the alleged incidents. Nhan also said that, as

far as he can tell, a complaint has never been filed against Granger.

The complainant also filed a criminal complaint against Granger around the time the lawsuit was filed. No criminal complaint was filed with the TSU Police Department.

Granger, a star player at TSU in the early 1990s and affiliated with the school as an assistant coach, administrator and athletic director since 2019, was given a five-year contract extension last summer, which Nhan says was recently approved by the TSU Board of Regents.

Attorney Tony Buzbee filed the lawsuit on behalf of the accuser and requests $1 million in damages from Granger. Texas Southern is not part of the lawsuit, but that could change.

The school is said to be bracing to be named as a co-defendant eventually.

“They may say, you didn’t train him right, maybe you have problems. I don’t know,” Nhan said. “But that’s what we are waiting to hear.”

William Hill

Proves why belief and hustle matter

At just 10 years old, William Hill considered walking away from the game he loved.

Benched more often than he played and overlooked by a coach who never invested in his development, Hill’s passion for baseball nearly faded before it had a chance to flourish.

But with unwavering support from his parents, a change in environment and a coach who saw his potential, Hill turned what could have been the end of his baseball story into the beginning of something greater.

Years later, the former Summer Creek standout and centerfielder is headed to the University of Texas, fulfilling a dream that once seemed out of reach.

Hill began playing baseball at six, but it wasn’t until he turned 10 that he began to question his place in the sport.

“At 10 years old, I struggled with everything, but the thing I struggled with most was hitting.

I couldn’t figure out how to truly swing the bat,” said Hill.

Though he loved the game, Hill felt his development had stalled. He looked to his coach for guidance. Instead, Hill found himself riding the bench, discouraged and disheartened.

“It felt demoralizing,” said Hill. “I started thinking baseball might not be for me. Practices felt like a chore — I didn’t even want to show up.”

In his lowest moments, his father, Willie Hill, encouraged him to keep going.

“Don’t ever doubt your abilities,” his father told him — words that stuck.

“My parents played a huge role in keeping me going. They never let me give up,” said Hill. “I saw how hard they worked in life and I wanted to mirror that work ethic in everything I did.”

Determined to grow, Hill transferred from Dynasty Baseball to Rampage, a team that had often bested his own. That’s when he met Coach AJ Santa Rita — a turning point in Hill’s journey.

“Joining Rampage reignited my love for the game,” said Hill. “Coach AJ will forever be one of the best coaches I’ve had. He treated us like family. There were no favorites — everyone had an equal opportunity.”

After two years, Hill returned to Dynasty, this time under Coach Jeremy Allen. Allen was the first coach Hill had who looked like him and his impact was lasting.

“Coach Allen helped me believe in myself in a sport where I was often the minority. I made huge improvements and with those came confidence,” said Hill.

That confidence carried Hill into high school, where he made an immediate impact

at Summer Creek High School, earning a varsity spot as a freshman and splitting starts with senior pitcher Adam Troy, now at USC by way of Pepperdine.

“My freshman year felt like something out of a movie,” said Hill. “I’m still so thankful for the way the seniors embraced me.”

Though he didn’t receive any awards that season, Hill’s hustle stood out, especially to summer ball coach Nick DeSantiago.

“The thing that always impressed me about Will was how hard he played,” said DeSantiago.

“He’d hit a fly ball and still sprint out of the box.

The talent was always there, but his character set him apart.”

Hill isn’t a loud or vocal leader. He leads by example through his effort and discipline.

“My work ethic is something I take pride in,” said Hill. “I don’t like skipping reps or taking it easy. I believe the way you do one thing is the

way you do everything.”

That drive caught the attention of the University of Texas scouts. While watching other prospects on DeSantiago’s team, a UT scout noticed Hill.

“Coach DeSantiago had a good relationship with the UT scout. We had a few commits on the team already, so when the scout came to watch them, he got a look at me too,” said Hill.

It didn’t take long for the Longhorns to offer Hill a scholarship.

“Summer ball was a big stepping stone for me,” said Hill. “Coach DeSantiago was great about getting us in front of college coaches.”

Hill ultimately chose Texas over offers from TCU, Georgia and Tennessee.

“Texas felt like home,” said Hill. “The competition in the SEC is top-tier and the academics at UT are second to none. It’s one of the most prestigious schools in the country.”

Hill went on to become a four-year varsity letterman and led his team in batting average his senior year, hitting an impressive .506.

“Being offered by UT as a freshman, playing varsity all four years and finishing with that batting average — it’s something I once thought was unimaginable,” said Hill. “But my family always kept me grounded.”

Looking ahead, Hill remains focused and hungry, still guided by hustle and grit.

“My ultimate goal is to be a Hall of Famer in the Major Leagues,” said Hill. “But no matter what, I’ll keep working.”

To young athletes struggling with doubt or early setbacks, Hill offers simple but powerful advice: “Don’t give up. Everyone grows at a different pace. All you can do is work hard, trust the process and believe that God has a plan for you,” said Hill.
