Third Ward chess players honored Students from Zoe Learning Academy, a Houston charter school, were honored

by City Councilman Michael Knox after topping 20 other schools at the 2017 North/Central Texas Scholastic Chess Championship. The team finished first in the elementary division and second in the novice division, and took home a total of five trophies. “The game of chess challenges their ability to analyze, evaluate and create,” said Richard Burton, the team’s faculty sponsor. “These are critical thinking and problem-solving skills they will utilize throughout life.”

He did hope, however, that they would listen to public opinion.

NAACP parts ways with leader Brooks Defender News Services

The nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization will not renew the contract of Cornell Brooks, president and CEO of the NAACP for three years.

The civil rights leader, who has vocally opposed the policies of the Trump administration, said his contract expires June 30. The organization’s executive committee voted on the move, he said.

NAACP Chairman Leon Russell and Vice Chair Derrick Johnson said that the change was due to a needed restructuring of the organization. They are aiming for moves that Cornell Brooks will better equip the group as they take on President Donald Trump on issues like voting rights and the justice system.

“Our executive committee, looking at itself, looking at our organization and reviewing where we’ve come from in the last three year, made a decision that we believe is in the best interest for this organization,” Russell said.

The organization has struggled to be a leading voice amid the Black Lives Matter movement.

Brooks said he had previously been assured that his contract would be renewed.

“The NAACP has had a revolving door of CEOs and this is a particularly bad moment for the door to be spinning, so it’s disappointing,” Brooks said.

“For all the people out here who have been imperiled because of police misconduct, because of voter suppression, schools imperiled because of

segregation and under-funding, distraction is not what we need.”

He said that the underlying issue was one of structure. The organization has 64 members on its board, 17 members on its executive committee and has had four CEOs in the last 15 years, Brooks said.

The board has yet to name a new president and Russell and Johnson said they plan on traveling across the country on a “listening tour” to hear from NAACP members about their concerns, fears and wants for the organization.

The organization said in a statement,” The leadership of the NAACP has decided to implement an organization-wide refresh and strategic re-envisioning to determine how best to position the organization to confront head-on the many challenges of today’s volatile political, media and social climates.”

Budget slashes $800 billion from Medicaid Defender News Services

President Donald Trump’s proposed budget includes big cuts to entitlements like Medicaid as well as other “safety net” policies.

The budget would reportedly follow through on House Republicans’ plans to cut Medicaid by $800 billion over 10 years, plans that go directly against Senate Republicans’ expressed desires not to roll back the expansion of Medicaid that was successful under Obamacare.

In addition, anti-poverty programs such as welfare and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will reportedly have more flexibility for states to impose more work requirements “for able-bodied

Americans” on the program.

For conservatives, these changes are exactly what they are looking for to combat what they see as too much reliance on the government.

Democrats have railed against such cuts, with Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer saying that Trump’s proposed budget would pull “the rug out from so many who need help.”

“This budget continues to reveal President Trump’s true colors: His populist campaign rhetoric was just a Trojan horse to execute long-held, hard-right policies that benefit the ultra-wealthy at the expense of the middle class,” he said.

Trump has proposed cuts to the estate tax, capital gains and business tax rates.

THE U.S. SUPREME COURT STRUCK DOWN two congressional district maps in North Carolina, ruling that the state engaged in unconstitutional gerrymandering. The ruling is a victory for Black North Carolina voters who had argued the plans packed African-Americans in districts that already had a high percentage of African-Americans, thus diluting their presence in other districts…….MILWAUKEE COUNTRY SHERIFF DAVID CLARKE, who claims he is going to be assistant secretary of Homeland Security despite no confirmation from the department, is once again under fire. New documents show that he plagiarized sections of his 2013 master’s thesis on U.S. security. He earned his master’s degree in security studies at the Naval Postgraduate School.

His thesis, “Making U.S. Security and Privacy Rights Compatible,” failed to attribute his sources properly a minimum of 47 times…….

THE WHITE POLICE OFFICER WHO SHOT TERENCE CRUTCHER is back on the job. Betty Jo Shelby returned to work at the Tulsa Police Department after being acquitted of first-degree manslaughter. Shelby was accused of using an unreasonable amount of force against Crutcher in the September 2016 shooting. She encountered him along with his stalled vehicle on a city street. He can be seen on video walking away from the officers with his hands in the air before he is shot in the chest. Shelby said she fired her gun because she feared for her life. Crutcher was unarmed… ….A BLACK STUDENT AT BOWIE STATE UNIVERSITY was stabbed to death by a man who claimed allegiance to a hate group. Sean Urbanski was charged with assault and first- and second-degree murder after stabbing Richard W. Collins III, who had recently been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army and was about to graduate. Police say Urbanski had been a member of the “Alt-Reich Nation,” a Facebook group that was filled with racist posts.

or more than 200 years, African-Americans have participated in every conflict in United States history. They have not only fought bravely the common enemies of the U.S. but have also had to confront the individual and institutional racism of their countrymen.

Many of us know about contemporary trailblazers such as Gen. Colin Powell, the first African-American to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, but there are a number of other Black firsts in the U.S. military.

Things to do for Memorial Day Memorial Day is the perfect opportunity to get out and celebrate as a family. If you’re looking for some different ways to observe the holiday, here are a few ideas to get you started. w Visit local military monuments.

Houston is home to a number of military monuments, like the Houston National Cemetary, the Buffalo Soldiers Museum or one of six West Texas World War II Museums. Find the nearest monument and take some time to stop by with your family. You’ll find it’s a great way to learn about the specific war or wars that the monument is dedicated to honor, and you’ll be able to start a conversation with your kids about American history and the significance of military memorials. w Honor the National Moment of Remembrance.

Many people don’t know the true meaning behind Memorial Day. In response, Congress established the National Moment of Remembrance. It asks all Americans to pause, wherever they are, at 3 p.m. on Memorial Day in a moment of national unity for one minute.

That specific time was chosen because it’s the time when most Americans are expected to be out, enjoying the freedoms of this country. You’ll find trains blasting their horns at that time, and all Major League Baseball

games will pause for one minute at the time as well.

It’s a simple and easy way to remember the true meaning of the day. w Decorate your home with flags.

If you have younger children, craft time is always a great way to bond as a family while also using the opportunity as a teachable moment. Grab some fabric, fabric paint and stencils to help your kids make their own flags or American flag-style tributes. It’s tradition to fly the flag at half-staff until noon on Memorial Day, so you can also explain this tradition and what it means as you fly your own flag at home. You can also use this time to teach them about the flag, what each star represents, and why there are 13 stripes on the flag.

Then, you’ll have some great home-made flags to use for years to come. w Thank a veteran.

While Memorial Day is a time for remembering, and honoring our fallen soldiers, it’s also a wonderful time to

thank those soldiers past and present who are right here in our midst today. Thank them for all they have done to protect our country and our freedoms.

Clyde J. “C.J.” Messiah Jr. has been confirmed by Mayor Sylvester Turner and the Houston City Council as director of the General Services Department for the City of Houston.

“I have had the pleasure of working with C.J. over the last year,” Turner said. “He is a man of his word and knows how to get the job done, and I am confident in his ability to lead this department.

“I look forward to working with C.J. and the great city employees that work in the General Services Department to ensure that the lights come on in our buildings and that our facilities are clean, well-maintained and secure.”

Messiah has served as interim director of the department since November 2016 and joins the mayor’s executive team with more than two decades of law enforcement experience. He has been the deputy assistant director in charge of security for the General Services Department since June 2016.

As director of the General Services Department, Messiah is tasked with coordinating the preparation, implementation and monitoring of the department budget, training employees and establishing policies and procedures for the department.

Messiah has more than 23 years of experience with the Houston Police Department and served as sergeant of the Mayor’s Protection Detail Division for 11 years.

Messiah also served as technical sergeant, staff sergeant and airman sergeant in the United States Air Force.

He is a veteran of the Air Force and has worked as a security consultant with the Major League Baseball Organization for 16 years.

The General Services Department oversees maintenance, construction and security management services for more than 400 city facilities.

Opinions mixed on Cosby rape allegations NNPA News Service

The arguments go back and forth. Detractors of comedian Bill Cosby say he made his bed and should suffer the consequences.

Supporters argue that greed, extortion and a campaign to distort his legacy, by alleged racists, have destroyed Cosby’s career.

At the center of the controversy are the dozens of accusers. Some of the women who sued Cosby and his legal team for defamation as the comedian defended himself publicly, lost those lawsuits.

The extortion, his supporters say, comes courtesy of Gloria Allred, a celebrity attorney who, in 2014, called on Cosby to put $100 million in a fund for the alleged victims and to let a panel of retired judges determine the truth about their claims, many of which allegedly happened in the 1960s and 1970s.

And claims of racism have mostly been directed at Hollywood and its tolerance for individuals like Roman Polanski and Woody Allen and Judd Apatow, who has been vocal in his condemnation of Cosby, even calling the “I-Spy” star “one of the most awful people you’ve ever heard of.”

Jones, 28, said she feels for any woman who has been raped, assaulted or demeaned in any way.

“But, realistically, we have not seen evidence that any of this is true, yet we can’t watch his shows, which all have been groundbreaking and a boost and an encouragement to Black people,” said Jones.

“Yet, what we do see are other comedians going against Cosby with venom and attorneys like Ms. Allred asking Mr. Cosby for $100 million in what I think is nothing more than a shakedown.”

Allred has denied those claims. She told NBC that she thinks Cosby’s recent NNPA Newswire interview (which ran in the Defender) was an attempt to influence the jury pool.

“I expect Mr. Cosby and members of his family to continue to speak out in an attempt to portray him as a victim rather than as an alleged sexual predator,” Allred said.

Dr. Carolyn M. Byerly, a professor and chair of the Department of Communications, Culture and Media Studies at Howard University’s School of Communications, said Cosby’s early work clearly broke ground and should continue to be recognized.

However, the “deeply significant events of what appears to be his later life behavior, cannot be dismissed or trivialized,” Byerly said. “We do not know where things went wrong for Bill Cosby, but we have to listen to women who have broken silence, often with great emotional difficulty.”

Caregivers gain rights

Take huge strides

In Texas, there are more than 3.4 million Texans who provide unpaid care to family and loved ones at any time. The value of this unpaid care in Texas alone is estimated at $35.5 billion a year.

More than 84 percent of Texas voters aged 50 and older strongly support the bill, according to a recent AARP survey.

The prime sponsors of the Texas legislation are Rep. Four Price (R-Amarillo) and Sen. Van Taylor (R-Plano).

Texas lawmakers have finalized a measure that gives important new rights to millions of unpaid family caregivers. House Bill 2425 (companion to Senate Bill 1417) would help Texans when their loved ones go into the hospital and as they transition home. The legislation goes next to the governor’s desk.

The measure would ensure hospital patients’ designated family caregivers are offered instruction in providing needed care at home.

It is vital because unpaid family caregivers often provide complex medical and nursing tasks for their loved ones, and sometimes without adequate explanation or training.
