UH hosts Republican presidential debate The University of Houston has been selected by CNN, the Republican National Committee (RNC) and Telemundo as host site for a GOP presidential candidates’ debate on Thursday, Feb. 25.

The debate will be moderated by CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer from the Moores Opera House, inside of the Moores School of Music.

“The University of Houston is honored to serve as the host site of this important national conversation,” said Richie Hunter, UH vice president of marketing, communication and media relations.

“The chance to participate in history isn’t an opportunity taken lightly, and every day, our Cougar community proves time and time again that it’s deserving of a national spotlight.”

Numerous election-related events are scheduled across campus before and after the debate, including voter registration drives, a student watch party, and panel discussions on immigration, gun policy and the intricacies of the primary process.

UH does not have debate tickets available. All tickets are managed by the RNC.

City waste management begins trash round-up The City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department has started a comprehensive citywide cleanup of illegal dump sites and collection of heavy trash to help reduce mosquito breeding sites and combat the spread of the Zika Virus.

The special collection sweeps, which will occur on Saturdays, began in District D and will proceed throughout the rest of the city on subsequent Saturdays. Normal junk waste collection will occur per the regular schedule.

“Now, before mosquitoes have the opportunity to start breeding, is the time to be vigilant about protecting our city,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “Please help us by taking steps to reduce potential breeding sites near your home.”

Residents can help by doing the following: • Eliminate all standing water from property.

• Remove all trash because mosquitoes can breed in areas as small as a water bottle.

• Empty water from discarded tires and separate them from the rest of your junk waste pile at the curb to allow SWMD employees to properly sort the materials.

• Report illegal dumping sites by calling 3-1-1.

• Utilize one of six neighborhood depository/recycling centers to dispose of heavy trash if you miss the collection date in your neighborhood.

Tips to make your tax refund go further More than 70 percent of taxpayers will receive tax refunds this year, and last year, the average refund was $2,797. If you’re receiving a refund, here’s some advice from Family Features and Kiplinger.

Don’t think of your tax refund as “fun” money. Sixty-eight percent of Americans said it’s easy to accidentally spend “fun” money on items they don’t really need, but by taking a step back and thinking long term you can make savings choices to help your refund stretch all year long.

Resist the urge to splurge. Just 9 percent of Americans filing taxes this year said they’re likely to use their tax refund to splurge on a big ticket item. Instead, consider using tax refunds to establish good financial habits, such as cutting unnecessary bills. Make a list of monthly expenses and take time to reevaluate your spending on things like food, utilities or your monthly cell phone bill. You’re almost guaranteed to find ways to cut back and reduce costs.

Be a saver. When it comes to tax refunds, Americans are split.

Fifty-two percent think you should spend it and 48 percent think refunds should be tucked away in

savings. Good financial habits start with saving. Which side will you be on this year?

Pay off credit card debt. Using your refund to pay off a balance with an 18 percent interest rate is like earning 18 percent on your investments, which is an incredibly valuable use of the money. And if you pay off your balances, you can afford to close some cards that are now charging high fees.

Rebuild your emergency fund. Many people have raided their emergency fund over the past several years and have had little extra money to restore it. You could use your refund to start rebuilding that fund, which can help you avoid landing in credit-card debt if you have an emergency. Keep the money easily accessible in a money-market account or savings account that earns interest.

Invest in your home. Your refund won’t be enough to redo your kitchen or bathroom, but it can pay for some smaller home improvements. Use the extra cash to add a deck, paint a room or cabinets, replace your bathroom sink, swap out your faucets, organize a closet, install a programmable thermostat or spruce up your yard.

Rapper Lamar biggest winner at Grammy Awards Kendrick Lamar had a huge night at the recent Grammy Awards, winning five statuettes.

Four awards were for music from his best-selling album, “To Pimp a Butterfly.”

Lamar won Grammys for Best Rap Album, Best Rap Performance, Best Rap/Sung Collaboration, Best Rap Song (“Alright”) and Best Music Video (with Taylor Swift on “Bad Blood.”)

In addition, Lamar took to the stage to deliver a passionate performance of “The Blacker the Berry” and “Alright.” He marched onstage in a prison jumpsuit, while shackled to a group of men also dressed as inmates. His band played inside a makeshift prison cell.

Canadian singer/songwriter The Weeknd had a strong showing, earning his first Grammys with a pair of awards for Best R&B Performance for “Earned It” and Best Urban Contemporary Album for “Beauty Behind the Madness.”

Singer/songwriter D’Angelo won Best R&B Song for “Really Love” with Kendra Foster.

D’Angelo and The Vanguard took home the Best R&B Album award for “Black Messiah,” his first album following a decade-plus hiatus from releasing music.

A tearful Lalah Hathaway thanked her late father Donny Hathaway as she took home the award for Best Traditional R&B Performance for her remake of 1972’s “Little Ghetto Boy.” Chok-

ing back tears, Hathaway said, “Thank you to my father for leaving this song to me to give to other people.”

The night also included big celebrations of R&B music. Tyrese Gibson, John Legend, Luke Bryan, Demi Lovato, and Meghan Trainor paid tribute to 2016 MusiCares Person of the Year Lionel Richie with a medley of the singer/ songwriter’s hits, including “Easy,” “Hello” and “Brick House.” Richie brought the house down with “All Night Long.”

what’sup DENISE MATTHEWS, the singer formerly known as VANITY, died Feb. 15 from kidney failure. She was 57. Matthews was lead singer of the girl group VANITY 6 in the early 1980s.

They recorded the hit single “Nasty Girl,” which was produced by PRINCE. Matthews recorded two solo albums for Motown and costarred in the movies “The Last Dragon” and “Action Jackson.” She became a born-again Christian after a near-fatal drug overdose in 1994 and received a kidney transplant in 1997.

She devoted her life to evangelism and released an autobiography titled “Blame It On Vanity.”

Her health problems continued and took a turn

for the worse last year……..Actress, dancer and producer DEBBIE ALLEN, a native Houstonian, will receive the Legend Award at the 2016 Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards which will air Saturday, Feb. 27, at 9 p.m. on OWN. Prince will be interviewed by Rap-A-Lot artist BUN B on Thursday, March 17 at 11 a.m. in Ballroom D of the Austin Convention Center. Prince, who is celebrating 30 years in business, founded the record label in 1986, partially as an incentive to keep Fifth Ward teenagers in school and off the streets. 10 African-American men made local history

The Houston area has been home to many African-American trailblazers in recent history. They have governed cities, coached pro sports teams and led school districts. Here are just 10 men who have made a difference.

1. Lee P. Brown served as Houston’s first Black police chief from 1982 to 1990. In 1998 he was elected the city’s first Black mayor. Brown also served as New York City police commissioner and director of the White House Office of National Drug Policy 2. Don Chaney became the first Black head coach of a pro sports team in the South when he joined the Houston Rockets in 1988. Chaney and Elvin Hayes were the first Black athletes to play basketball for the University of Houston in 1964.

3. John S. Chase was the first Black to enroll in the University of Texas School of Architecture and the first to practice architecture in Texas.

He died in 2012 4. Andrew Jefferson became first Black state district judge in Harris County in 1975. He also served as an assistant district attorney. He died in 2008.

5. Otis King became Houston’s first Black city attorney in 1976. He was a professor of law and dean at Texas Southern University’s Thurgood Marshall School of Law. He died in 2012.

6. El Franco Lee became Harris County’s first Black county commissioner in 1985, representing Precinct I. He began his political career in 1979 when he was elected state representative. He died in 2016.

7. Dr. Rod Paige became the Houston Independent School District’s first Black superintendent in 1994. He served as the first Black secretary of education under President George W. Bush and was the first school superintendent to hold the position.

8. Dr. Zeb Poindexter Jr. was 13. He later served as general manager first Black graduate of the University of KTSU-Radio. of Texas Health Science Center Den10. Community Music Center of Houston

The Community Music Center of Houston has a 37-year history of providing various musical services for Houstonians of all ages. CMCH has presented the music of Motown at Miller Outdoor Theatre, accompanied Beyonce at Super Bowl XXIV and has been featured on PBS. The organization’s roots began in 1979 when Ron Scales and Patricia Johnson created the Society for the Preservation of Spirituals after noticing that the legacy of American slave music was being lost. The society was an outgrowth of the Black church, and the initial board of directors included members of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church.

In 1981, the organization’s name was changed to CMCH. In 1983, Anne Lundy became executive director and brought with her the William Grant Still String Quartet which she formed in 1981.

Lundy said CMCH is important because it preserves Black music traditions.

“CMCH promotes African-American culture and history in Houston by preserving Black music traditions through models such as music education, performances, workshops, and community outreach featuring works by Black composers,” Lundy said.

Lundy said CMCH developed the Scott Joplin Orchestra to address the lack of opportunities of African-Americans in major symphony orchestras. In addition, CMCH performs seldom known works of Black composers in genres such as blues, jazz, Spirituals and folk music.

CMCH’s annual Black History Month concert is Sunday, Feb. 28, at 5 p.m. at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 3530 Wheeler.

Ensemble Theatre

Houston’s Ensemble Theatre is the oldest and largest professional African-American theater in the Southwest, and is one of the largest in the nation that owns and operates its own facility (3535 Main St.).

The Ensemble was founded in 1976 by the late George Hawkins to preserve African- American artistic expression and serve a diverse community. It evolved from a touring company operating from the trunk of Hawkins’ car to one of Houston’s most significant cultural institutions.

Artistic director Eileen Morris said the theater’s productions are inspired by Black life.

“The Ensemble Theatre tells stories about the African-American experience through live performance art,” Morris said. “These stories in many ways contribute to the preservation of our history and serve as a window into the imagination and creativity inspired by Black life.

“Our stories explore the human condition though the AfricanAmerican perspective, as we seek to enlighten, entertain and enrich communities diverse in age, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. The ‘E’ is for everyone.”

Catering to the next generation of performers, the theater also provides educational workshops, artist-in-residence experiences, and live performances for students both off-site and at the.

The Ensemble’s current production is “Fences” by August Wilson, which runs through Sunday, Feb. 28.

The Houston Museum of African American Culture (HMAAC), located at 4807 Caroline, strives to collect, conserve, explore, interpret and exhibit Black culture for current and future generations.

HMAAC, located at 4807 Caroline Street, began as an initiative conceived by then-mayor Lee P. Brown and a group of AfricanAmerican families in 2000. The museum experienced growing pains, and in 2009, John Guess Jr. was brought in as CEO. The museum opened on a daily basis in 2012.

Guess said the museum promotes Black culture and history by engaging the community through exhibits and events.

“We are here to transform the communities that we serve,” Guess said. “Our programs help us all define who we are and what it means to be in a multicultural society today. Culture is art, music, dance, theater, literature and education. It’s about the big thoughts we all have about the issues of today as well as yesterday.”

For the month of February, the museum has several programs lined up to celebrate Black history. The programs, to be announced, will cover a variety of topics, including integration at the University of Houston and sustainability of the Black Lives Matter movement.

University Museum at TSU

The University Museum at Texas Southern University promotes Black culture and history through its artifacts and programs.

The museum’s seed was planted in 1949, when TSU President R. O’Hare Lanier promoted the idea of a “museum of Negro arts and history.” Dr. John T. Biggers, Carroll Harris Simms and other art faculty assembled in over four decades a collection of African and African-American art with a major focus on the work of TSU art majors.

Fifty-one years later, the TSU museum officially opened its doors on April 12, 2000. Museum director Dr. Alvia Wardlaw explained its mission.

“The museum has a mission to exhibit both past and present art and artifacts, and to provide programming and events to support the arts in Houston and surrounding areas,” Wardlaw said.

“TSU’s museum has established itself as an authority on art from African-American legacy artists such as Dr. Biggers, Kermit Oliver, and others of the African Diaspora.” The museum is also the permanent home of Bigger’s mural masterpiece, “Web of Life.”

For the community, the museum hosts a monthly “Food for Thought” poetry reading for area poets. Additional events include roundtable discussions for area artists, jazz evenings and film screenings followed by discussions.

A Black History Month exhibit is currently on display through Sunday, Feb. 21.

Austin exhibit honors the late Barbara Jordan The Barbara Jordan Freedom Foundation announced that an interactive exhibit of the late congresswoman’s life will be on display on the ground floor of the Texas Capitol Rotunda in Austin from Monday, Feb. 22 to Saturday, Feb. 27. from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. The exhibit is free and open to the public On Feb. 21, Jordan would have celebrated her 80th birthday. February also features Barbara Jordan Freedom Week, as designated by the 82nd Texas Legislature.

“Celebrating and acknowledging Barbara Jordan’s life and impact on the Civil Rights Movement is an incredible honor,” said Wilford Flowers, chairman of the Barbara Jordan Freedom Foundation, a nonprofit founded to continue Jordan’s fight against injustice.

“We continue her legacy by sharing the interactive timeline and gallery of her life at our state’s

capitol. All visitors have an opportunity to witness and engage with the life of an American hero, native Texan and champion of civil rights for all.

“All are welcome to bring their families and friends to the capitol to see this important exhibit, and learn more about the life and legacy of Barbara Jordan.”

A native of Houston, Jordan was born in 1936 in Fifth Ward. She became the first AfricanAmerican to serve in the Texas Senate since Reconstruction (1966-72), the first African-American woman elected to the U.S. Congress from the South (1972-78), and the first to deliver the keynote address at a national party convention (the Democratic Convention in 1976).

Her riveting appearance in the Watergate hearings in 1974 helped revitalize many Americans’ belief in the strength of the U.S. Constitution.

To commemorate Jordan’s birthday and celebrate her legacy, the interactive portion of the exhibit will feature a diverse portrayal of Jordan’s media and speaking appearances. The display offers an overview of her life from childbirth to her death in 1996, and has letters, photos and important memorabilia from her life.

The displays are created from the archive housed at Texas Southern University, Barbara Jordan’s alma mater, with contributions from the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, where she was a professor for 17 years. Houston State Sen. Rodney Ellis is the legislative sponsor of the exhibit.

Celebrate Black history every day Each year, we proudly celebrate the history of African-Americans during the month of February. Our history, however, should be cherished every day. Whether you visit a Black museum, listen to Black music or quiz your kids about Black history, you are recognizing accomplishments from the past and present. There are other ways to celebrate…

Join a Black organization. There are countless organizations to become involved in, including civic clubs, other community groups, church groups, professional organizations, civil rights organizations, sororities, fraternities and alumni associations.

Read and support a Black newspaper. March 16 marks the 189th anniversary of the founding of America’s first Black newspaper, Freedom’s Journal. Today, Black newspapers continue to chronicle African-American life, from its triumphs to its tragedies.

Visit Black historical sites. The Houston area is rich with Black history. Dozens of historical markers can be found at entire communities, schools, churches, homes, parks and other structures and facilities (visit thc.state.tx.us for info).

Attend or organize a poetry slam.

Celebrate the works of renowned Black poets, such as Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovanni, Amiri Baraka, Phillis Wheatley or Countee Cullen.

Learn about African-American inventors. Did you know that Garret Morgan invented the modern-day gas mask and stoplight, Daniel Hale Williams pioneered open heart surgery and Sarah Goode invented the folding cabinet bed?

Have a soul food feast. Try a new (and preferably healthy) soul food recipe or prepare a family favorite, whether it’s collard greens, black-eye peas or peach cobbler.

In addition, common ingredients such as okra and rice are part of a traditional West African diet.

Regardless of how you celebrate Black history, embrace it 365 days of the year.

Through his studies, Woodson found that African-American contributions to history “were overlooked, ignored, and even suppressed by the writers of history textbooks and the teachers who use them.”

He concluded that racial prejudice “is merely the logical result of tradition, the inevitable outcome of thorough instruction to the effect that the Negro has never contributed anything to the progress of mankind.”

Black History Month, which Woodson founded as Negro History Week in 1926, was his effort to combat that tradition.

Chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas, considered heroes by most Black Americans, the second week in February was set aside to celebrate Black history.

The first year, education officials of only three states and two cities recognized the event, but by 1929 it was being promoted in nearly every state in the nation. In 1970, Black students at Kent State University celebrated the first unofficial

Black History Month and in 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized the event.

Ford said: “The last quarter-century has finally witnessed significant strides in the full integration of Black people into every area of national life. In celebrating Black History Month, we can take satisfaction from this recent progress in the realization of the ideals envisioned by our founding fathers. But, even more than this, we can seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”

In the intervening 40 years, we’ve seen remarkable progress in racial justice, and also heartbreaking setbacks. There are some in our own community who feel Black History Month is unnecessary – as there were in Woodson’s own day.

And their essential point is valid: Black history is American History, and its teaching should not be relegated to one month per year. But that isn’t the point of Black History Month.

The American dream remains perilously out of reach for many people of color. The National Urban League Equality Index, a comprehensive comparison of Black America’s status in the areas of economics, health, education, social justice and civic engagement, stands at 72.2 percent.

Racial disparity won’t disappear if we simply ignore it.

Justice will not be achieved unless we actively seek it out.

Black History Month not only serves as a reminder of what our forbearers have achieved, but as an inspiration for the journey that remains before us.

HISD names Huewitt interim superintendent The HISD Board of Education on Wednesday named Deputy Superintendent and Chief Financial Officer Ken Huewitt as interim superintendent of the district.

Huewitt was tapped to serve as the interim leader of HISD while trustees search for a permanent replacement for outgoing Superintendent Terry Grier, Ken Huewitt who is stepping down at the end of this month after almost seven years with the district.

The board is also in the process of hiring a new firm to help trustees in the search for a permanent replacement for Grier, whose last day is Feb. 29.

Huewitt will assume his new role on March 1. “It is an honor to have the opportunity to lead the Houston Independent School District, and I thank the board for their confidence,” Huewitt said. “We want to continue to stabilize the district, but also keep Houston on the map as the top urban district in the country.”

Huewitt, who joined HISD in 2001, has served as deputy superintendent and CFO since last July, when he was tapped as Grier’s

second-in-command and charged with overseeing the district’s day-to-day operations in the superintendent’s absence.

He also oversees all financial operations of the district, including the Controller’s Office, Budget and Financial Planning, Benefits and Risk Management, Medicaid Finance, Real Estate, Materials Management and Warehousing, as well as the School Business Manager Training Program.

Before being named CFO, Huewitt spent 11 years as the HISD controller, tasked with accounting for the district’s then $1.5 billion annual operating budget.

Prior to joining HISD, Huewitt served as an auditor for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Office of Inspector General, a senior audit specialist for the FDIC, a senior associate for Coopers & Lybrand, and a regional director of finance for the ServiceMaster Corporation.

More recently, Huewitt was honored by the Council of Great City Schools with the 2015 Bill Wise Award for distinguished service in urban education.

Super Bowl committee unveils countdown clock The Houston Super Bowl Host Committee unveiled its first countdown clock outside of NRG Stadium. The clock, the first of four that will be placed around the city of Houston, relays messages from the committee and counts down the number of days until Super Bowl LI (51), which will be played on Feb. 5, 2017, at NRG Stadium.

Along with Host Committee Chairman Ric Campo and President and CEO Sallie Sargent, Houston Texans Founder and CEO Bob McNair, Harris County Judge Ed Emmett, Harris County Precinct 1 Commissioner Gene Locke and Mayor Sylvester Turner were on hand to bring down the curtain to unveil the clock.

“Houston’s on the clock,” Campo said. “We have 359 days until Super Bowl LI comes to Houston. It’s our opportunity to put a bright light on Houston and our region, to not only the world because it’s the largest event in the world but also to the folks of Houston.

“We want to create value to them and make sure they really understand Houston and what Houston has to offer for them as residents.”

“Turner said more than 1 million people will converge on the area. “They will come, they will be surprised by what they see, and they will be so wowed that they will not be in a hurry to leave,” he said.

The clock, which stands 15 feet tall, sits just outside the Amegy Bank gate off the southeast corner of NRG Stadium. It is the first sign that the public can see that promotes the Super Bowl and the festivities that will be held the 10 days before the game.

It is the first of four clocks which will be place around the city this spring. The others will be placed at Bush Intercontinental Airport, Hobby Airport and Discovery Green in the coming months.

The Houston Super Bowl Host Committee is the centralized planning entity for Super Bowl LI and acts as the liaison between the NFL, City of Houston, Harris County and the local community. The committee is a private non-profit Texas corporation, and is responsible for Super Bowl festivities and logistics.

Recruitment underway for 10,000 volunteers The Houston Super Bowl Host Committee is recruiting 10,000 volunteers to “become the face of Houston.”

Volunteers must be available from Jan. 2-Feb. 5, 2017, and must commit to a minimum of three, six to eight-hour shifts. Eight to 10-hour shifts are required for volunteer team leaders.

There will be a variety of volunteer opportunities, including supporting “Super Bowl Central” and welcoming visitors from around the world at Houston-area hotels and transportation hubs.

Volunteering does not include admission to the game or access to the stadium on game day.

Successful applicants will be invited to attend the host committee’s recruitment center for a face-to-face interview and applicable training sessions. Optimism high, Astros report to Kissimmee

pring is just around the corner and that means it won’t be long before we hear the crack of the bat and the sound of the ball striking leather. Major League Baseball season is fast approaching, with Houston Astro pitchers and catchers reporting to Kissimmee, Fla. on Feb. 18.

The Astros begin spring training games on March 4 against the St Louis Cardinals. They open the regular season on the road against the Yankees on April 4. The team’s home opener is April 11 against the defending World Series champs, the Kansas City Royals.

With the success the team enjoyed in 2015 – making the playoffs for the first time in 10 years – optimism runs high that 2016 can be bigger and better.

The Astros led the AL West for the majority of the 2015 season before coming in second to the Texas Rangers, earning a wildcard entry to the playoffs. They took the Royals to the limit in five games in the opening round of the playoffs. As a result of last season’s success, many pundits are picking the Astros as the favorite to win the AL West in 2016.

Certainly all the key components for the Astros return this season. Three-time All-Star Jose Altuve, 2015 Cy Young award winner Dallas Keuchel, 2015 AL Rookie of the Year Carlos Correa, outfielder George Springer and reliever Tony Sipp form a nucleus that gives fans a reason to be optimistic.

Couple that group with the acquisition of hard-throwing closer Ken Giles and king-sized starting pitcher Doug Fister and you begin to see what all the fuss is all about.

Astros GM Jeff Luhnow was tasked with rebuilding the Astros four years ago when Jim Crane purchased the team. After years of initial futility Luhnow is now able to experience the fruit of his labor.

“It is rewarding knowing that all the work we did over the past four years since [Crane] bought the team has led to this point,” Luhnow said. “It also makes us nervous.

How do we make sure we keep going forward?

“The closer you get to the top, the harder it is to stay here. Our goal is win a championship. There’s a lot of luck involved in that and a lot of planning, but we’re going to take it day by day. We’re in a good spot,” Luhnow said.

Despite the team’s success in 2015, Astros manager A.J. Hinch said it’s time for his players to focus on 2016.

“It was such an eventful 2015. It’s hard to put into words sometimes,” Hinch said. “It’s time to turn the page to the next season. I think our players will remember both the celebration, but also the angst that comes with getting eliminated in the playoffs.”

“Motivation won’t be an issue,” Hinch continued.

“Understanding what it takes to play well deep into the season is well understood.”

Morehead fills key role for no. 1 Atascocita

tephun Morehead takes pride in the role he plays for the Atascocita High School boys’ varsity basketball squad.

While Carsen Edwards, Fabian White, Greg Shead and Brandon Brooks-Loville garner many of the headlines for the nationally-ranked and No. 1 Class 6A team in Texas, the 6-foot-3 guard/wing is secure about his contributions to the team.

“If I’m coming off the bench, I always try to bring energy to the game,” Morehead said. “You have to know about matchups and the tendencies of your opponent. If somebody gets in foul trouble, I have to be ready to go out there and play my game.”

Atascocita head coach David Martinez gave Morehead an early nod when early foul troubles became an issue in the Eagles’ rematch with District 16-5A rival Kingwood before a standing-room-only crowd at AHS. The Eagles improved to 31-0 on the season with a 6052 victory over the visiting Mustangs.

“Stephun brings experience, energy and defensive length into the game,” Martinez said. “Defensively is where he helps us the most. But when he gets aggressive and goes to the basket or gets a loose ball, that’s huge for us as well.

“Tonight when Brandon Loville got in foul trouble, I brought in Stephun and we didn’t miss a beat. The points he scores help us to extend a lead or make a run.

Martinez didn’t have his full complement of players when the season began and relied on his versatile jack-ofall-trades.

“Stephun started the first 15 games of the season with one of the starters out. So now it’s like bringing a starter off the bench when he comes in the game,” Martinez said.

Morehead says the senior-laden Atascocita roster has a common goal for each and every game. “We know everybody is going to be coming for us so we have to bring our “A” game every time out,” he said. “We can’t take nights off.

“From the start of the season, it’s been all about business with us,” Morehead said. “Last year we were right there at the top (regional finalist/35-2 record) and we knew where we wanted to get this year. In order to get to state we were going to have to work hard in practice and not suffer any letdowns.”

Martinez believes his team is getting its second wind as the regular season winds down and the playoffs are set to begin.

“We’re always striving to improve on our team play,” Martinez said. “Our chemistry and our bonding are the

difference makers to me. I’m pleased with the fact that as the season has progressed, we’ve continued to get a little bit better and a little better.

“I know these guys can play. They are a talented bunch.

The key thing is to keep them playing together and to keep them playing hard,” Martinez said. “This group has a lot of pride. They don’t want to lose so we’ll give it our best shot.”

Super Bowl tickets high Now that Houston is officially on the clock for Super Bowl 51, inquiring fans want to know about purchasing tickets for the big game. The face value for Super Bowl tickets routinely ranges from $800 to $1,900.

Depending on the match-up, however, tickets can easily go for as much as five times the face value. The NFL distributes a portion of the tickets to the host city and the two competing teams that are available to season ticket holders via lottery. Most fans secure tickets via the resale route. So unless you plan to hit the jackpot, you might be watching the game on TV. It will be played Feb. 5, 2017, at NRG Stadium, and will mark the third time H-Town has hosted the event.

Atascocita High School head boys’ basketball coach David Martinez has a unique perspective when it comes to the upcoming boys’ high school basketball playoffs. Atascocita (32-0) has been the No. 1 ranked Class 6A team in Texas for the entire 2015-2016 season according to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) state poll. For the past two years the Eagles’ season has ended in the Region II-6A tournament. Most of the other Houston area 6A schools compete in Region III-6A and Atascocita has played a number of them. “Sam Houston (TABC No. 2 6A) is good. They’re a lot like us. They play fast and they’re guard-oriented. They have a big guy that can protect the paint,” Martinez said. “Aldine Davis has a stud player and Cypress Lakes is starting to turn it up right now.

Truthfully, I’ve been paying more attention to our own region. Region II is better than it was last year,” Martinez said. “There are some quality teams out there. Look out for Klein Forest, Dekaney, Westfield, Round Rock McNeil, Dallas Skyline and Killeen Shoemaker.
