Greater Harris County 9-1-1 Appreciation Day September 11, 2026 September 11th is designated as 9-1-1 Day in the territory served by Greater Harris County 9-1-1. Greater than 4 million voice calls and texts are processed by over 1,000 public safety dispatchers (telecommunicators) through Greater Harris County’s 9-11 system. This system provides a lifeline to the residents of 49 cities in Harris and Fort Bend Counties – more than 20% of the population of Texas. The first 9-1-1 call was made in 1968. By the end of 1976, 17% of United States citizens had access to 9-1-1. More than 96% of U.S. citizens now have some form of 9-1-1 coverage. Most of that coverage is enhanced 9-1-1, which provides telecommunicators with additional data such as the caller’s phone numbers and GPS location. Advanced districts like Greater Harris County 9-1-1 also provide text to 9-1-1, smart transcription, supplemental caller data, extensively redundant infrastructure, and other modern technology. This incredibly evolved and robust system is funded by small fees included on phone bills.
Telecommunicators are recognized as first responders by the state of Texas for their ability to impact the safety of others before responders arrive on scene. They are highly trained to assist you in an emergency. To ensure telecommunicators can do their jobs effectively, please do the following when calling 9-1-1: 1. Stay on the line until you are told to disconnect –
even if you called 9-1-1 by mistake. 2. Know your location. Exact addresses, intersections, landmarks, nearby businesses and direction of travel will assist with getting help to you quickly in an emergency. 3. Answer all questions. 4. Follow all instructions. 5. Do not let small children play with cell phones. Even cell phones without service can call 9-1-1. 6. Make sure children know how and when to use 91-1, and now how to find an address. Visit www.911.org for more information about 9-1-1 services.

National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances. Millions of neighbors take part in National Night Out across thousands of communities from all fifty states, U.S. territories and military bases worldwide on the first Tuesday in August (Texas and select areas celebrate on the first Tuesday in October). Neighborhoods host block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and various other community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits and much, much more.
