Do you enjoy music and singing along to familiar tunes? Become a member of our very own “Hummers & Strummers” ukulele group.

Aces Caregiver Support

Many of us find ourselves in the role of “caregiver.” It may have crept up gradually or it may have happened suddenly. Come to ACES to meet with other people in our community who, like you, are caring for an older person. We are a group of adult children and spouses who gather for valuable information on relevant topics, leads on resources, and to share our concerns and tips with other caregivers. Whether you are a daughter doing grocery shopping for your mom or, husband struggling with your wife’s deteriorating health, you may find solutions and comfort here. Our professionally led support group can help you deal with the stress, sadness and decisions you face. Studies show that caregivers who participate in a support group reduce stress, enjoy improved health, provide better care and make better decisions. All family caregivers are welcome. Meetings are on the second and fourth Wed.s of each month from 1 to 2:30 p.m. FREE. If your care obligations keep you from attending ACES, consider this: Through our treasured partnership with Faith in Action Volunteers, we offer two respite services.

On-site supervision for your loved one is provided (by appointment) at the Patty Turner Center while you attend our ACES meeting. Care recipients must be comfortable being apart from their loved one and be able to use the restroom on their own. Also, a trained Faith In Action respite volunteer can come to your home, if needed, while you attend the meeting. Both respite services are always FREE and based on availability. Pre-screening is required.

Social Services Caruso Grandfriends Fund

Did you know there is a small fund available to assist lower income older adults to pay a portion of their membership and program fees at the Patty Turner Center? It is supported by the fundraising efforts of the students at Caruso Middle School. Our social service office can provide eligibility and program information. Participation is strictly confidential.

Answers To Your Medicare Questions

The Patty Turner Center is a host site of the Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP). SHIP is a free statewide individual counseling service available to all current or soon-tobe Medicare recipients. Volunteer counselors have extensive training to answer your questions about Enrollment, Claims and Appeals, Prescription Drug Plans, Advantage Plans, Supplemental Insurance, and Subsidies to offset the cost of Medicare.

Appointments are required and are available by calling the Patty Turner Center. SHIP is a program of the Illinois Department on Aging.

Blue Bag Program

The Blue Bag Program is collaboration between the PTC and the DeerfieldBannockburn Fire Department to make sure critical information is available at the time of a medical emergency. A Blue Bag (plastic sleeve) with copies of your identification, health information, emergency contacts, and advanced directives is placed in your home where emergency personnel know to look for it. The program’s goal is to ensure your necessary information is available and your wishes honored. Blue Bags, complete with forms, are available free of charge for local residents at the Patty Turner Center.

Transportation Options Village Taxi Program

Residents of the Village who are 65+ or disabled can register to use the subsidized Taxi Program. Registration is done through Village Hall, 847-945-5000. Once registered, riders are issued a Village ID number and rider coupons. Riders can go anywhere at any time, just by calling one of the three cooperating taxi companies. The cost for a ride within village limits is just $1 plus a coupon; rides outside the village are $5 off the metered fare with the coupon. Additional coupons are available at the Village Hall.

Township “Going Places” Program

Mobility-challenged residents of West Deerfield Township may use the “Going Places” van program. Applications are through the Township, 847-945-0614. Once approved, you may schedule a medical destination ride up to 30 days in advance; nonmedical rides up to 3 days in advance.

Requests are granted based on availability. Rides include Highland Park Hospital, Glenbrook Hospital, and the VA Hospital. Cost is $5 round trip and $2 for all Veterans.

License Plate Discount And Senior Rides Free Card

Receiving these two benefits begin with filing one form: the Illinois Benefit Access Application. Are you eligible?

One must be 65 or older or over 16 and totally disabled; AND have an annual income from all sources under $27,610 for singles or $36,635 for couples. The application is good for two years. ALL applications must be submitted online, NO paper forms exist. You can find and file the application online yourself by searching “Illinois Benefit Access Application” or, you can make an appoint-

ment with Margie and she will file it for you! Application help is also available through the township office.

Community Support Grant For Accessibility

West Deerfield Township has limited grants of up to $1000 that may be awarded to the disabled to improve their access to the world. Residents with physical impairments, developmental or cognitive disabilities, or mental illness should consider applying. The program is intended for those with the greatest financial need, but there is no stated income limit. Information and applications are available at the West Deerfield Township office (847-945-0614) and the Patty Turner Center. Older adults are encouraged to apply!

The Senior Citizen’s Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption

The Chief County Assessor’s Office representative will be at the PTC on Fri., May 1 to provide face-to-face assistance in completing the Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption form as well as other exemption programs. Homestead Exemption applies to an owner occupied principal residence for people 65 years old and older with annual incomes of $55,000 or less who meet the income limitations. The benefit for the Senior Freeze is calculated by subtracting the current value from the frozen base value. This exemption must be applied for yearly through the Chief County Assessment Office.

Forms are automatically mailed to taxpayers who already have qualified for the Exemption in February with a due date of July 1, 2015.

On behalf of the Patty Turner Center, I would like to take this time to extend a special “Thank You” to you, our members and community friends who continue to support the Center and its mission of promoting the independence and well-being of adults 50 years and older. A terrific year, we have so much to share and be proud of. This past summer, we welcomed Jill Becker as our new program coordinator. Passionate and charming, she has become an integral part of the Center and the Deerfield Park District family. Over the year, we have also celebrated the arrival of 120 new members; many of whom were referred by you, our very own members.

Along with creating new social opportunities for nearly 800 patrons, it has also been a wonderful year of nurturing new partnerships with local agencies and businesses within the community. Entering the New Year, we continue to celebrate our members, friends and guests as we acknowledge the lives of Fred and Patty Turner and the Turner Family and their vision in helping to advance opportunities for active adults in the community.
