ACES: Adult Caregiver Education Support

Many of us find ourselves in the role of “caregiver.” It may have happened suddenly or crept up gradually. ACES offers an opportunity to meet with other people in our community who are caring for an older person. It’s a fantastic group that gathers to hear valuable info on relevant topics, get leads on resources, and to share concerns with other caregivers. Give it a try! Meetings are twice monthly on 2nd and 4th Wednesdays from 1-2:30 pm in the Patty Turner Center Library. FREE and open to all family caregivers.

Savings via Benefit Access

If you are age 65+ (or totally disabled) and have income less than $33,562 (single) or $44,533 (couple), you can apply for the Illinois Benefit Access Program that will save money on your license plate renewal sticker and demonstrates your eligibility for the Senior RIDES FREE transit card! All applications must be submitted online. You can do it yourself on the Illinois Department on Aging’s website. PTC members can also make an appointment with Margie for assistance too!

SOWN Discussion Group

The Supportive Older Women’s Network creates a family of friends among women living alone who are looking for mutual support and upbeat meaningful discussions. The group is led by professional Robbie Boudreau and meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month from 1:00pm to 2:30pm. For more information, please call Robbie at: 847-7218414.

Caruso “GrandFriends” Scholarship

Did you know there is a small fund available to assist lower income older adults to pay a portion of their membership and program fees at the Patty Turner Center? The GrandFriends Fund was originated and is supported by the fundraising efforts of the students at Caruso Middle School. See Margie for eligibility.

SHIP-Medicare Questions Answered

Is your Medicare Supplement providing the best value and benefits to meet your needs? Would you like help in understanding the ABC and D’s of Medicare? Wonder if you are eligible for subsidies to help pay some Medicare costs? We’ve got you covered! PTC is a host site for the IL Department on Aging’s Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP), offering personalized info on all Medicare topics. Our expert volunteer counselors are ready to assist you. Call our front desk for a FREE appointment. Smart beneficiaries use SHIP because “The Best Choice is an Educated Choice!”

2026 AARP Tax Assistance The PTC, in partnership with AARP, will be moving forward with its tax assistance program this year. Appointments will be offered on Fridays between the hours of 10:00am and 2:00pm. beginning Friday, February 6th. Medicare’s Open Enrollment

NOW is the time to get the plan that’s RIGHT FOR YOU! Open Enrollment OCT 15--DEC 7 is the one time each year that all beneficiaries can shop for Drug and Advantage Plans. Just because your plan is working for you now, doesn’t mean it’ll be the best one for next year. Your plan’s costs and formulary may have changed or your medical needs may have changed. Don’t be loyal to a drug plan, be loyal to yourself. Shop it! You can compare plans by using the online PlanFinder at medicare.gov. Or, have the PTC’s SHIP team do it for you! They are kind, expertly trained volunteers from the IL Department of Aging’s Senior Health Insurance Program. Call our front desk to make your appointment (in-person or via Zoom). Don’t delay, as every year our demand exceeds our supply. Medicare’s annual Open Enrollment is underway! You may call our front desk to make an appointment.

Transportation Options Need a ride?? Our area is fortunate to have many local governmentsupported (meaning very affordable!) options. Each has its own eligibility criteria and meets different needs. The two most widely used and personalized are the Village of Deerfield Taxi Program (847-945-5000) and the Township “Going Places” handicapped-equipped van (847-945-0614). Another, Ride Lake County (1-800-201-6446) is less personalized but has the widest boundaries, serving the entire county. Local non-profit Partners in Aging, formerly Faith In Action, (847-721-8414) even offers some escorted transportation. Call around to learn about each and find the one that best suits your need. Many folks use all of them!

The Deerfield Park District is committed to conducting its recreation programs and activities in a safe manner and holds the safety of participants in high regard. The Deerfield Park District continually strives to reduce such risks and insists that all participants follow safety rules and instructions that are designed to protect the participants’ safety. However, participants and parents/guardians of minors registering for this program/activity must recognize that there is an inherent risk of injury when choosing to participate in recreational activities. You are solely responsible for determining if you or your minor child/ward are physically fit and/or skilled for the activities contemplated by this agreement. It is always advisable, especially if the participant is pregnant, disabled in any way, or recently suffered an illness, injury or impairment, to consult a physician before undertaking any physical activity.

WARNING OF RISK

Despite careful and proper preparation, instruction, medical advice, conditioning and equipment, there is still a risk of serious injury when participating in any recreational activity/program. Understandably, not all hazards and dangers can be foreseen. Participants must understand that certain risks, dangers and injuries due to acts of God, inclement weather, slipping, falling, equipment failure, in supervision, premises defects and all other circumstances inherent to recreational activities/programs exist. In this regard, it must be recognized that it is impossible for the Deerfield Park District to guarantee absolute safety.

WAIVER AND RELEASE OF ALL CLAIMS AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK

Please read this form carefully and be aware that in signing up and participating in this program/ activity, you will be expressly assuming the risk and legal liability and waiving and releasing all claims for injuries, damages or loss which you or your minor child/ward might sustain as a result of participating in any and all activities connected with and associated with this program/activity (including transportation services, when provided). I recognize and acknowledge that there are certain risks of physical injury to participants in this program/activity, and I voluntarily agree to assume the full risk of any and all injuries, damages or loss, regardless of severity, that my minor child/ward or I may sustain as a result of said participation. In the event of an emergency, I authorize District officials to secure from any licensed hospital physician, and/or medical personnel any treatment deemed necessary for me or my minor child’s immediate care. Participants and parents/guardians of minor participants are solely responsible for any and all expenses associated with emergency medical treatment, including but not limited to, transportation services to the nearest available medical facility/provider or to an alternative medical facility/provider requested by the participant or parent/guardian. I further agree to waive and relinquish all claims I or my minor child/ward may have (or accrue to me or my child/ward) as a result of participating in this program/activity against the Deerfield Park District, including its officials, agents, volunteers, and employees (hereinafter collectively referred to as “Deerfield Park District”). I do hereby fully release and forever discharge the Deerfield Park District from any and all claims for injuries, damages or loss that my minor child/ ward or I may have or which may accrue to me or my minor child/ward, arising out of, connected with, or in any way associated with this program/activity.

I have read and fully understand the above important information, warning of risk, assumption of risk and waiver and release of all claims. If registering a minor participant, I further attest that I have read the above to my minor child/ward.
