The Deerfield Park District endeavors to keep its facilities and programs operating whenever possible. There may be times; however, when weather, road conditions or facility malfunctions dictate that programs and/or services must be canceled or temporarily postponed or entire facilities closed. In such cases, Deerfield Park District reserves the right to close a particular facility or cancel a program based on the following criteria: • Whenever an unscheduled closing or cancellation occurs, the park district will make every effort to communicate to patrons via the park district Weather Hotline (847-317-2555), the website deerfieldparks.org, and the metropolitan Chicago Emergency Closing Center website emergencyclosingcenter.com.

• Local School Closings: Whenever School District 109 cancels school due to snow related weather conditions, all Deerfield Park District Preschool classes and all programs held at school sites will also be canceled. Closing other park district facilities or canceling classes will be made on a case by case basis. Park district facilities themselves will remain open for nonscheduled activities (e.g. fitness center use, registration, etc.) unless specifically directed to close due to weather conditions.

• Facility Specific Conditions: In the event that conditions prompting closing arise at a specific facility (e.g. high winds, power outages, equipment malfunctions, flooding), classes may be canceled or the facility temporarily closed until the condition has been resolved.

• ThorGuard Lightning Prediction Systems are installed at all parks, pools and schools in Deerfield. See General Information section for more information.

• The following are contact numbers regarding the cancellation of programs due to poor or unsafe weather conditions:

Dear Neighbors,

We hope that you were able to watch the Chicago Sky in the WNBA finals in October. Our kudos to the coaching staff and team members on their first WNBA championship win! What a phenomenal accomplishment to reach this elite status. We are thrilled to have the team practicing at Sachs Recreation Center and showcasing their dedication and athleticism. Check out page 7 for more exciting news about our partnership with the Chicago Sky. In November we welcome back an in-person Deerfield Family Theater production of School House Rock. Attendees will be required to wear masks and be seated in socially distances pods, so come out and enjoy this family friendly show! Show dates and ticket sales are available at deerfieldfamilytheater.com.

Thank you to everyone who sent in survey responses for our Community Wide Survey. We are tabulating results and also sending out follow up questions for a deeper dive to help us understand what Deerfield Park District can do to meet the wants and needs of its residents. We look forward to sharing the survey results and facilitating future opportunities utilizing resident feedback.

The park district, like so many other local businesses, feels the constraints of the tight job market. We continue to be competitive with our wages to retain the highest caliber of staff, follow and often exceed the mandated minimum wage requirements, while also proudly being the first employer for hundreds of Deerfield High School students. As these wages increase, you may see

fees for classes, events and passes rise as a result. Please know that we continue to remain competitive when compared to other opportunities in the area.

As the temperatures get colder this winter, our parks are still open for business so continue to go outside and recreate! What better way to play in the colder weather than enjoying our outdoor ice rinks? Ice rinks will again be available at Jaycee, Patty Stryker and Briarwood Parks. Take a look at the wide assortment of group exercise classes offered at the Sachs Recreation Center as we begin to move some of our outdoor classes back inside.

The first week of the new year will bring new programs and event opportunities. Check out all of the offerings in this program guide. Consider trying a new activity and join us in reimagining recreation. We have come a long way in these past two years. The park board, along with park district staff members, have spent a lot of time planning and replanning, imagining and reimagining, with one ultimate end goal; to serve the residents of Deerfield and provide the best possible programming, facilities and parks for our residents. PARK DISTRICT BOARD MEETINGS

Deerfield Park District is a municipal governing agency established to provide parks, recreation facilities and programs for residents.

Five elected commissioners govern the district and set general policies. Regular meetings of the Board of Park Commissioners are held at JPCC at 7:30 PM on the third Thursday of each month.

Virtual meetings may be held when in person public meetings are deemed not safe or practical.

The public is welcome to attend. Schedule changes are posted at JPCC and here.

Board Workshop Meetings are held the first Thursday of the month as needed. For more information, call 847-945-0650.

FLORAL PARK DEDICATION On Saturday, August 21 community members, dignitaries and park board members gathered for the Floral Park Dedication. At their November 19, 2020 board meeting, the Deerfield Park District Board of Commissioners voted on the renaming of Mitchell Park. The Park Board voted to change the name from Mitchell Park to Floral Park. The name was one option provided by an Advisory Committee that was comprised of representatives from local governments, agencies and citizens at large.

Floral was the name of the initial subdivision planned for development in 1959 before the property acquisition was approved by a public election referendum in December 1959. Thank you to all who assisted in this process and were able to join us for the dedication.

MORE GREAT THINGS! ILLINOIS ASSOCIATION OF PARK DISTRICT’S BEST OF THE BEST PARTNERSHIP AWARD The Deerfield Park District received recognition with an Illinois Association of Park District’s (IAPD) Best of the Best Award. Deerfield was selected for the partnership with the Doctors Test Centers and were recognized at the IAPD awards Gala on October 15.

This award is intended to recognize non-governmental organizations that have collaborated with a park district in a significant manner.

By developing a partnership with a private medical provider, Doctors Test Centers, the Deerfield Park District established a Facility Use Agreement with the Doctors Test Centers for a district facility to be used as a COVD-19 Regional Vaccine Center. Through this partnership, 12,000 on-site and another 8,000 off-site vaccines were provided to local and regional residents since late March 2021. The opportunity to contribute to the public health of all persons desiring a vaccine during a global pandemic is perhaps one of the most significant partnerships ever established by the Deerfield Park District.

We are honored to have worked alongside the Doctors Test Centers during the pandemic and are grateful for the opportunity to help reduce the effects of a pandemic and provide direct assistance through vaccine distribution.

HUGE congratulations to our friends at Chicago Sky, the 2021 WNBA CHAMPIONS! This is the first Championship title in organization history! Ann Crosby, Director of Basktball Operations/Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Chicago Sky, attended the October 21, 2021 board meeting.

The Board of Commissioners recognized the Chicago Sky for their accomplishment, mentioned numerous partnership milestones with the Deerfield Park District and recognized the championship achievement by officially naming what is referred to as the Bulls Gym at the Sachs Recreation Center as the Chicago Sky Gym.

SRC COURT RENTALS

There are three hardwood basketball courts available for rental at the SRC. They are sized for middle-school, high school and the largest gym is an NBA regulation sized court. The gyms can be set up for basketball, volleyball and pickleball.

PICKLEBALL

Play the fastest growing racket sport in America! Pickleball combines tennis, badminton and ping pong for a fun game played on a badminton court with the net lowered to 34˝ at the center. Game is played with a perforated plastic baseball and paddles.

Magician Gary Kantor presents a thrilling magic and balloon animal show specifically tailored for this younger age group. Gary’s magic will use stuffed animal characters from popular cartoon shows to amaze the children. You can even bring your child’s favorite stuffed animal and make it part of the show. A balloon animal will be made for every child to take home after the show. Twenty minutes of magic followed by 10 minutes of making balloon animals.

Youth Indoor Triathlon

The perfect introduction to the world of Multisport. This indoor event will be held at the Sachs Recreation Center. Athletes will participate in a 5 minute timed swim, a 15 minute timed bike ride and a 10 minute timed run. The goal will be for each participant to cover as much distance as possible in the time allowed for each of the three disciplines. Each participant will need to provide their own swimming, biking and running gear. The Sachs Recreation Center will provide the indoor stationary bikes. Locker rooms will be available for changing clothes before, during and after the event. This is a non-competitive event, meaning no age group awards will be given. After School Club School Year beginning Fall 2021

The Deerfield Park District After School Club is for boys and girls from kindergarten through fifth grade. After School Club begins on the first full day of school and ends on the last full day of school. Registration is based off space and staffing. The availability of the staff and the size of the rooms at the different schools will determine enrollment limits.

Children in the After School Club enjoy a snack, and then participate in a variety of activities. Designated quiet time is provided to allow for doing homework or reading a book. Please make sure your children are dressed appropriately for the weather, as we frequently go outdoors.

After School Club does not meet on days when school is not in session.

LEVELS OF LEARNING We welcome two and a half, three and four year old children as they embark on a lifetime of learning through discovery and exploration. Our curriculum is divided into three distinct age group classrooms: Little Learners, 3 Year Olds and Pre-K. Children need to be potty-trained.

REGISTRATION AND TUITION NEW STUDENT Online and walk-in registration for the 2022-2023 school year begins January 17, 2022. There is no lottery this year.

The first monthly tuition payment is due at the time of registration. The total amount of the first monthly tuition payment is a non-refundable and non-transferable deposit. The remaining tuition may be paid in full at the time of registration or in eight monthly payments beginning July 1, 2022 through February 1, 2023.

Discovery Club - Register now for 2022-2023!

Blast into space, dig with dinosaurs, or take a peek inside the human body! Children will take an in-depth, interactive and scientific exploration into new and exciting topics. Each afternoon the children will experience art, literature, science and fun as they embark on a journey of discovery without ever leaving school! Discovery Club complements the Deerfield Preschool curriculum. Please send a lunch, an afternoon snack and a water bottle. This program is open to Deerfield Preschool 2022-2023 Pre-K students only. If space remains, we reserve the right to release open spots to Pre-K students from other schools. This program includes the tuition for an 11:15-12:30 enrichment where the children will eat lunch then participate in a specialized class. Children will be escorted to and from the enrichment by park district staff. Discovery Club will begin the second week of Deerfield Park District Preschool and follow the preschool calendar.

Reading Rookies

Give your child the keys to reading success. This enrichment class uses thematic fun, multi-sensory instruction, games, crafts and stories to teach children in their last year of preschool how to build their letter and sound knowledge. Each weekly lesson focuses on 2-3 letters. The lessons will ignite your child’s reading interest, while improving your child’s ability to hear, identify and manipulate individual sounds. Youth Indoor Triathlon

The perfect introduction to the world of Multisport. This indoor event will be held at the Sachs Recreation Center. Athletes will participate in a 5 minute timed swim, a 15 minute timed bike ride and a 10 minute timed run. The goal will be for each participant to cover as much distance as possible in the time allowed for each of the three disciplines. Each participant will need to provide their own swimming, biking and running gear. The Sachs Recreation Center will provide the indoor stationary bikes. Locker rooms will be available for changing clothes before, during and after the event. This is a non-competitive event, meaning no age group awards will be given. We do, however, encourage each athlete to give their best effort during this event. Each participant will be provided with a goody bag.

Starfish Weekday Swim Lessons

General Information for Swim Lessons

Swimmers must be comfortable going underwater on their own, standing in shallow water, and gliding unassisted. These classes are not for beginners that need instructors in the water holding them afloat.

Instruction will be a mix of in water and on deck. Lessons will focus on high volume and repetition to learn basic and advanced skills through games, play, and progressive instruction.

The Illinois Department of Public Health requires that all children who are not toilet trained must wear swim diapers and tight fitting rubber/vinyl pants under swim suits. This rule will be strictly enforced.

The COHO Swim Club is a developmental and competitive swimming club. COHO is a co-sponsored organization of the Park Districts of Deerfield and of Highland Park. Our mission is to promote the spirit of competition, the character of individuals, and the pride of team through swimming. In keeping with our philosophy of providing a well-rounded, quality developmental and competitive program for swimmers of all ages and abilities, COHO Swim Club offers professional technique instruction and training.

COHO is divided into Developmental, Age Group, Senior, and Masters Programs. The number and length of practices depends on the group. Swimmers are assigned to groups by coaches and must follow the specific schedule for their group. This system allows our coaching staff to meet the individual needs of each swimmer.

In addition to the Deerfield Park District program fee, we require payment of the USA/IL Swimming registration fee and the COHO Club fee.

The USA/IL Swimming fee covers a required annual registration with USA and IL Swimming. This fee is paid once a year per swimmer and renews every fall. The amount is the same for every swimmer ($83).

The COHO Club fee is paid every season, and goes directly to COHO to cover team t-shirts, team caps, some social events and all meet entry fees. This amount varies by group ($35 Minnows; $50 Sharks & White groups; $65 Blue groups; $85 Red & Gold groups).

Special Note For all groups: practice times, locations, and days will vary. General season schedules and monthly schedules are posted on the club website at teamcoho.org.

Winter practices are held at both Deerfield High School & Sachs Recreation Center.

The minimum skill requirements for COHO are: Individuals, ages 5 and over must be able to swim 1 length of freestyle with rhythmic breathing (face in the water, turning the head to the side to breathe), 1 length of backstroke, demonstrate basic breaststroke, be able to go underwater to the bottom of the pool in the shallow end, and be comfortable swimming in the deep end.

ALL DISTRICT 109, 112 & 113 RESIDENTS are considered “residents” for the COHO program.

COHO SWIM CLUB

Coho Age Group Program

We offer 3 levels for swimmer ages 10 and under, and 3 levels for swimmers ages 11-13. Within both age groups these levels are White, Blue and Red. There are specific requirements and practice schedules for each level. Swimmers must follow the schedule for their assigned age group and level. The primary focus in the White levels is to learn and develop the technical aspects of all four of the competitive strokes, racing starts, and turns. Swimmers will also experience an introduction to training concepts and acquire skills in preparation for competition. The Blue and Red levels are more advanced and composed mostly of swimmers who have achieved “B” times from the USA Swimming National Age Group Motivational Time Standards. In these groups, swimmers will build upon elements learned previously, while continuing to improve their technique, and expanding on training concepts. Coho Senior Program

More information will be sent to COHO members once we finalize dates, times, and locations.

Our Senior Program is designed to incorporate the training the training needs of all high school swimmers (eighth graders may be placed here in the spring if they are ready to train at this level). There are 2 groups within the Senior Program (Gold 1 and Gold 2) and the Head Senior Coach will have the final say on group assignments. Strength Training is an important part of training in the Senior Program, and all program fees include strength training workouts. Gold 1 is intended to provide both a training environment for athletes to be successful not only within COHO, but also the high school level.

Swimmers are expected to attend at least 70% of swim workouts and communicate with the coaching staff about their training schedule. Gold 2 is intended to provide a more intense environment for State level swimmers who are dedicated to training and competing year-round. Swimmers are expected to attend 85% of all workouts including morning practices and dryland and communicate with the coaching staff about their training schedule. Swimmers who cannot meet the requirements and expectations of Gold 2 may be re-assigned to Gold 1.

The winter season for Gold begins on 1/9/21, but conditioning practices will be offered between the end of HS girls’ season and the start of winter COHO. 2022 WEEKEND PERMANENT TEE TIME LOTTERY During the regular golf season, there are times available each Saturday and Sunday for permanent tee time groups starting at 5:50 am until 8:50 am. Regularly scheduled Permanent Starting Times begin on April 9 and 10 and end October 1 and 2.

Permanent tee time applications for the 2022 season and a $75/85 R/NR per person starting time application fee must be submitted to the golf course PRIOR to December 5, 2021 lottery for the 2022 season. Applications are being accepted during regular business hours at the golf course, or application can be sent via email to jason@dfpd.org with payment being made online at deerfieldgolf.org.

There will be a first virtual Saturday lottery draw for all existing 2021 permanent tee-time groups at approximately 7:10 pm on December 8, followed by a second draw on at 7:40 pm for Sunday groups. This night’s virtual lottery draw is only for existing 2021 tee-time groups, any new groups wishing to procure a permanent tee-time spot on either Saturday or Sunday will be contacted for a 2nd virtual draw on a TBD date in December. Following the first lotteries all available times are posted on the Deerfield Golf Club website.

New Golf Passes and pre-paid tickets for the 2022 season can be purchased at both the golf course and on-line beginning December 1, 2021.

You may register online for most activities. Web registration is quick and convenient. You can view real time availability and save time!

Who is eligible?

Any household with a valid email address is eligible to register online. For Deerfield Park District residents to receive resident rates, proof of residence is required.

What programs are available?

The majority of park district programs are available online, with a few exceptions. These are usually programs that require tryouts, prerequisites, or prior instructor approval.

Will I know right away if I get in?

Yes. Online registration works in real time, so, as soon as you complete the payment process and get a confirmation email your enrollment is confirmed. If a class is full, you may join the wait list online.

PROGRAM CANCELLATION

PLEASE REGISTER EARLY! If enough participants are not registered, classes may be canceled. Those waiting until the last minute or for the first day of class may find it’s too late.

REGISTRATION STEPS

• Print legibly in ink.

• Read the registration form carefully and fill it out completely, including class names, activity code numbers and sections.

• Once a registration form is turned in, it cannot be changed.

• When registering, provide details about medical condition(s) that require staff attention.

• If you fax in your form, please do not send a duplicate by mail.

• Payment may be made by check or Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express credit cards. If paying by credit card, make sure the card number, expiration date and cardholder’s signature are completed and legible on the registration form.

• Do not use cash if you drop off registrations in the drop-off box.

• An adult participant, parent or guardian must sign the waiver on the bottom of the registration form. It is mutually understood that the fax registration document, including the waiver and release of all claims, shall substitute for and have the same legal effect as the original form.

PRIORITY REGISTRATION FOR DEERFIELD PARK DISTRICT RESIDENTS

People who live within the boundaries of the Deerfield Park District always have first priority in our registration process. However, having a Deerfield address does not always mean that you are a resident of our Park District. Program brochures are typically sent to the 60015 zip code, but this can include areas that are not part of the Deerfield Park District.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Residents experiencing difficulty paying program fees should contact the Park District.

RESIDENT & SPECIAL SCHOOL DISTRICT #109 AND #113 RATES

Resident rates will apply to those who live within the Park District boundaries. If a participant does not live within the park district boundaries but enrolls in a program that is held at a District 109 or 113 school and they reside in that school district, then they pay the resident rate.

SENIOR AGE

As of January 1, 2020 the senior age for all Deerfield Park District memberships, passes and fees will be age 65. Those who purchased senior memberships on or before December 31, 2019, and are under age 65, will be grandfathered in and receive senior rates until they reach age 65.

PROOF OF RESIDENCY

To receive “Resident” rates and priority in registration, you are required to show PROOF OF RESIDENCY when signing up for ANY Deerfield Park District program. Online registration users who have set up an account do not need to show proof of residency again at this time. Proof of residency includes both: • A current residential utility bill (gas, electric, water-no phone bills accepted) with your name stating your mailing address and service address as being the same.

• A valid driver’s license or photo-ID containing your current address.

Proof of residency needs to be brought in to Jewett Park Community Center, Patty Turner Center, Sachs Recreation Center, or Deerfield Golf Club. We do this to ensure that the registration procedures remain fair. Thank you for your compliance and assistance.

IMPROPER REGISTRATION

Those who register for our programs and improperly use a Deerfield address are removed from the class and no refund or transfer fee is provided. Non-residents pay a higher fee per program.

Non-resident fees are shown second in program descriptions.

Note: Non-residents are not eligible for resident fees even if their caretaker, provider, or relative resides in Deerfield.

CONTRIBUTIONS TO GRANTS-IN-AID

Voluntary contributions to the Deerfield Park Foundation for our Grants-in-Aid (Scholarship) Fund can be made on the registration form. The fund is used for people who are in serious financial need, to participate in park district programs. The Board of Park Commissioners has a policy that no person will be denied access to recreation programs or facilities because of an inability to pay fees. Please know that the program is strictly confidential and is closely monitored by the Director of Recreation. We appreciate your support.

REFUNDS FOR RECREATION PROGRAMS

A recreation program is defined as a program in which park district personnel teach activities or skills over a period of two or more class meetings. Sports leagues, camps, preschool, After School Club, trips, Sarah Hall Theatre, virtual sewing classes, special events, season passes and one-day classes and workshops are considered special refund categories.

• A refund may be obtained two (2) business days prior to the first day of class/program. A 10 percent service charge ($5 minimum; $10 maximum) will be deducted from the amount paid for the program(s).

• Once a program or class begins, and prior to it ending, you may request a prorated refund based on the number of classes attended and the date the refund request is received. A 10 percent service charge ($5 minimum; $10 maximum) will be assessed.

• If a class is rescheduled, relocated, or changed by the park district, a total refund will be made if requested by the participant.

• Refunds will be offered if a class is canceled or closed by the park district.

• If a participant is dropped from a program at the request and discretion of the district staff, a refund will be made, less prorated cost of classes held.

• In lieu of a refund, participants may transfer money to other currently offered activities. The amount to be transferred (refunded) will be prorated based on the number of classes that have already been held.

PARK DISTRICT PHILOSOPHY

The Park Board recognizes the need to provide and maintain sufficient and attractive parks, open space, recreation facilities and programs to serve equitably, and without prejudice, all the people of the Park District in the provision of leisure time activities.

Every opportunity shall be afforded, within financial limits, to plan, procure, develop and maintain park and recreation resources, and to provide leadership for the wholesome and constructive use of leisure time. The provisions of quality recreational services in the most efficient manner, at the least possible cost, and without significantly duplicating the efforts of other agencies, will be emphasized at all times. This includes the development of cooperative agreements with other agencies directly and indirectly involved with leisure services in the District.

The provision of recreation, park and conservation services must be considered as a positive opportunity for people of the District to share with each other, to develop leadership capacities, to learn skills for present and future enjoyment, and to emphasize responsibilities to each other as well as to the community.

THORGUARD

GENERAL INFORMATION

ThorGuard Lightning Prediction Systems are installed at all parks, pools and schools in Deerfield, from April through November. Horns are tested the first Tuesday of each of these months, at 10 AM. Should you hear the horn or see the strobe light at other times—or any time lightning seems possible—be sure to seek shelter. The system is meant to warn the public that conditions are right for possible lightning danger. This system is not 100 percent accurate, as it operates on radio waves which are variable. As not every unit will go off simultaneously, the public is asked to please use common sense when conditions appear threatening, even if ThorGuard warnings are not heard or seen.

FOOD ALLERGIES, MEDICATION, ILLNESS

Infectious Diseases: To prevent the spread of communicable diseases, such as strep, pink eye and fifth’s disease, parents should report any diagnosed cases to the Park District office. If exposure to other participants occurred, a notification is sent home.

Food Allergies: Many of our preschool, as well as cooking and other classes, will serve food; therefore, it is imperative that you notify the full-time Recreation Supervisor of any food allergies or dietary restrictions your child may have.

Medication: If your child requires medication (inhaler, epi-pen, etc.) during class, medication administration forms must be completed. Please call our registration office (847-945-0650) for details.

Follow these warnings for safety: • One prolonged horn blast signifies a strong lightning risk.

• The strobe light signals a continuing lightning alert condition.

• Three short horn blasts (and ceasing of Illness: Please do not attend class nor strobe light illumination) signal it may send children who are ill to class. be safe to return to the area, but use discretion.

Services for Residents with Disabilities Deerfield Park District is a partner with Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association (NSSRA). Formed in 1970, NSSRA is an extension of ten park districts, two cities and one village in the northern suburbs of Chicago and provides and facilitates year-round

recreation programs and services for children, teens and adults with disabilities. NSSRA offers recreation, sport, cultural and social programs and events available throughout the year, creating new experiences, opportunities for skill development, leisure time, and perhaps most importantly, friendship. NSSRA has been creating an environment of belonging through play since 1970, and has the distinction of being the first Special Recreation Association in the country.

We believe that everyone should have the chance to try something new. This means you have the opportunity to participate in any one of NSSRA’s 500 annual programs, or that you have the opportunity to participate in one of the Deerfield Park District programs with the assistance of an NSSRA Inclusion companion.

INCLUSION SERVICES

Deerfield Park District program Inclusion services are available to residents with special needs at no additional cost to the family. Inclusion services may include, when necessary, staff training, program modifications/adaptations, modified equipment and program observations.

Reasons to Request Inclusion Services • A parent or family member recognizes that a participant would benefit from additional support in a Deerfield Park District program.

• Deerfield Park District staff identifies a need for additional support, for safety and programmatic reasons, and communicates this need to the family.

Requesting Inclusion Services When registering for a Deerfield Park District program for the first time: • Mark the accommodation Section of the registration form to indicate that the participant will require assistance from NSSRA. • Once your registration form is submitted, the Deerfield Park District will contact you to discuss the type of Inclusion support needed for the participant.

• The Deerfield Park District will provide NSSRA with an Inclusion request that contains both program and participant information.

• You will be contacted by NSSRA to discuss the needs of the participant and get input on the type of support required.

• NSSRA will work with the Deerfield Park District to put the necessary Inclusion accommodations in place for participation in the desired program(s).

• Communication between you, NSSRA, and Deerfield Park District staff continues throughout the Inclusion process.
