MEET OUR STAFF

We are so proud of the Deerfield Park District team. Beginning in this guide we will provide profiles throughout our park district guides so that you can get to know the amazing team or learn more about those that you have already met.

Tammy Ingoglia

Tammy began her career at Deerfield Park District 34 years ago! After 16 years working in the registration office she was promoted to the Executive Director’s Administrate Assistant.

Throughout her tenure, Deerfield Park District has been a huge part of her family’s life as well. Her children enjoyed Summer Camps, learned to swim here and then worked for the park district.

Tammy shared, “I’ve always been so proud to work here and be part of the Deerfield Park District family. Deerfield is a great community and I’ve met so many wonderful people including staff and residents.”

Outside of work she enjoys spending time with her mom and two children, Vinny and Marisa, and her two dogs, Shadow and Molly as well as her grandpuppy Opie. She also enjoys live music, golf, water activities and hanging out with friends.

Lisa Turner

Lisa Turner has been working at the Park District since 2014 as the Accounts Payable Coordinator.

In addition to managing accounts payable, Lisa is a champion of recycling that includes textiles, electronics, office supplies and plastics. As an example, a plastics program in partnership with the Trex Company converts collected community plastics into recycled benches. This program has been a huge success with community participation far exceeding expectations.

Weekends mean family time for Lisa. She likes spending time with her siblings, daughters and granddaughters. You may also run into Lisa at the Genesee Theater listening to one of her favorite bands.

Lisa is always positive and happy to be at work. She states “I love that my job means I’m part of an organization that encourages people to play and have fun. How many people get to work in an office that’s in a park?”

After 34 years, Tammy is retiring on September 30. She is excited about retirement and new adventures including volunteering at a Sanctuary Farm, traveling and of course exploring new ways to recreate!

BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS Dear Neighbors, Following a two-year hiatus, our printed park district guide is back!

You asked and we listened. Responses to our 2021 Community Wide Survey indicated that 58% of respondents prefer a printed guide and 77.8% of respondents utilize the park district guide to learn about our programs, facilities and services. After receiving that feedback, we are happy to provide both the printed and online versions for residents to use to register for programs and events and find out what is new at the park district.

We hope you enjoy the Sachs Recreation Center’s new look as the updated color pallet changes the appearance and feel of the facility. Our front desk update is designed to offer a more inviting and customer-oriented space, promoting easier staff interaction with members as they enter and depart the facility. The updates in colors, flooring and finishes will be carried through the entire facility next year. Additionally, Nutritional Seminars are new at Sachs Recreation Center and free to both members and nonmembers. In September, a Meal Planning Bootcamp led by dietician Kim Blum is sure to inspire you to make healthy, tasty and easy meals to get you through the week.

Lots of enjoyable fall special events include our new Family Field Day in August, Chicago Showcase and the return of the Healthy Lifestyle Expo at Patty Turner Center in September. October events include the Halloween Hoopla event series as well as Octoberfest at Patty Turner Center. In November, we salute our Veterans at

the Pancake Breakfast. Then in December, you won’t want to miss Brunch with Buddy the Elf and two fun ways to cheer in the new year, a Best Friends Brunch at PTC and Noon Year’s Eve at SRC. Deerfield Family Theater will perform Big Fish this November at Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association’s new facility, the Mitchell L. Slotnick Center in Highland Park. Big Fish revolves around the relationship between Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman, and his adult son Will, who looks for what is behind his father’s tall stories.

To keep up with the tremendous interest in Pickleball, the indoor tennis courts at Sachs Recreation Center have been lined for Pickleball. Now we anxiously await the outdoor pickleball court construction at Shepard Park this fall. Watch the park district website for construction and completion dates for this project.

The Deerfield Golf Clubhouse will get a facelift this fall with new siding, a new roof and a new outdoor dining area on the deck. The decade-long project of refurbishing bunkers and improved drainage will also be completed this fall at the course!

PARK DISTRICT BOARD MEETINGS

Deerfield Park District is a municipal governing agency established to provide parks, recreation facilities and programs for residents.

Five elected commissioners govern the district and set general policies. Regular meetings of the Board of Park Commissioners are held at Jewett Park Community Center at 7:30 PM on the third Thursday of each month. Virtual meetings may be held when in person public meetings are deemed not safe or practical.

The public is welcome to attend. Schedule changes are posted at Jewett Park Community Center and here.

Board Workshop Meetings are held the first Thursday of the month as needed. For more information, call 847-945-0650.

NAMING OF THE CHICAGO SKY GYM At the Deerfield Park District Board Meeting on October 21, 2021, Deerfield Park District Board President Rick Patinkin read resolution 2021-07 recognizing the WNBA Chicago Sky for winning the 2021 WNBA Championship. The Deerfield Park District also announced that it would officially rename the Chicago Bulls Gym at Sachs Recreation Center the Chicago Sky Gym. Since then, the Chicago Sky Gym has taken on a whole new look. The floors were sanded and refinished adding our new Sachs Recreation Center logo alongside the WNBA logo and Chicago Sky logo. The rest of the Sky’s official practice facility received a facelift as well with new padding and paint, changing out the red and black for blue and yellow.

On April 15, just days before the team began their 2022 practice season, Park District Executive Director Jeff Nehila, Deputy Director of Recreation Tony Korzyniewski and Park District Commissioners Michael Brown and Debbie Serota joined Chicago Sky General Manager and Head Coach James Wade and Vice President of Basketball Operations, Strength and Conditioning Ann Crosby for an official ribbon cutting. Immediately following the ribbon-cutting, Coach Wade did us the honor of shooting the first basket on the newly refinished court!

We are thrilled to recognize the entire Chicago Sky organization for their amazing success in 2021 and we look forward to watching them train and practice in the newly designed Chicago Sky Gym space at Sachs Recreation Center.

SOUTH PARK EAST PLAYGROUND The Deerfield Park District is thrilled to announce the completion of the South Park East Playground. The playground renovation began with old equipment being removed by Kids Around the World, a non-profit organization that removes and transports playground equipment to be used in poverty-stricken communities. Newly installed equipment showcases inclusive pieces with ramps and a play surface designed for wheelchair accessibility. We are proud of our partnership with School District 109 and the PTO to make this project a reality. Due to supply chain issues, equipment was slow to arrive, but the final pieces are now in place and the playground is open for use!

CONSERVATION & SUSTAINABILITY

Thank you to everyone, including State Representative Bob Morgan and local Go Green members, who came out to volunteer at Briarwood Park for Chicago River Day. Volunteers worked to improve the health and beauty of the Chicago River system by cleaning up litter and invasive plants and planting monarch-friendly flowers, and native shrubs and trees.

Tony Korzyniewski Tony has worked for the Deerfield Park District for 11 years and is “proud to say I have worked for great park districts in my 25-year career where I have gained valuable experience that I have been able to apply here at the Deerfield Park District.”

As the Deputy Director of Recreation he serves as the General Manager for the Sachs Recreation Center and is responsible for oversight of all aspects of operations of the 100,000 square foot facility.

In addition, he is also responsible for oversight of the operations of the 2 outdoor pools and Coho Swim Club.

Tony’s talent for creating valuable partnerships is unmatched. The unique partnerships that Tony cultivates and continues to grow with the Chicago Sky, Northshore Rhythmic Gymnastics, Rush Physical Therapy , as well as the multitude of staff and vendors, are imperative to district operations.

Outside of work, Tony enjoys spending time with his family and friends and golfing. His wife Beckie is a fellow parkie (parks and recreation professional) and his daughter Aubrey and son Colby are both active in many sports.

60-minute Lap Swim times are available for reservation at the Sachs Recreation Center. One swimmer per lane. All lap swim participants must reserve a time block. No walk-ins will be allowed.

Our skilled and certified instructors provide a welcoming, supportive environment suitable for all ability levels. Come out and enjoy your favorite classes and instructors with friends as you exercise and stay healthy together.

NUTRITIONAL COUNSELING During the 60-minute initial consultation, you will work with registered dietitian Kim Blum, MS, RD, LD to outline objectives, discuss lifestyle and current routine, and set small and reasonable goals. You will establish both individual and family goals and determine your personalized needs. Deerspring Pool is a 6-lane, 50-meter Olympic-size pool with ADA accessible stairs and a portable accessible chair lift, that ranges from 3 to 5 feet deep then progresses to an 11-foot 9-inch deep diving well with a 1-meter diving board, drop slide, water slide and a separate zero depth wading pool.

BIRTHDAY PARTIES Magic and Balloons

Magician Gary Kantor presents a thrilling magic and balloon animal show specifically tailored for this younger age group. Gary’s magic will use stuffed animal characters from popular cartoon shows to amaze the children. You can even bring your child’s favorite stuffed animal and make it part of the show. A balloon animal will be made for every child to take home after the show. Twenty minutes of magic followed by 10 minutes of making balloon animals.

Balloon animals are a huge hit at birthday parties! Balloon animals will be created non-stop for 45 minutes by the Magic Team of Gary Kantor.

Hanukkah Clay Workshop

Chess

To meet the growing needs of the community for after school recreation, Deerfield Park District offers busing from Walden, Kipling, South Park and Wilmot Schools to Jewett Park Community Center for after school programs. Reading Rookies

Give your child the keys to reading success. In the next stage of their progression, players increase their playing stamina and speed in an up-tempo game like atmosphere. The clinic’s specific technique training involves strength and placement shooting, landing on the shooting foot, precision passing, settling the ball with various body parts and advanced fundamentals and skill maneuvers.

Most importantly, players are taught game concepts that will improve their decision-making and overall game.

Total Sports

This class features a new sport each week. Some of the sports taught and played include basketball, floor hockey, football, kickball, soccer, and baseball. In addition, participants play many popular running and group games. Children have the opportunity to acquire new skills and develop confidence in games they have played in previous classes.

Beginning Rhythmic Gymnastics

If you like music, dance, tumbling, and creativity, you have to try rhythmic gymnastics. It combines the beauty and artistry of dance with the strength and power of tumbling. Gymnasts perform routines to music using hand apparatus such as ribbons, balls, hoops, ropes and clubs. In the beginner class, girls will learn the basic body positions, elementary apparatus handling and musicality. Gymnasts may wear leotards or basic dance clothes. This program is an introductory basketball league. Each session will be 75 minutes each Saturday. There will be a 15 minute practice followed by a game. The games will be 4 quarters, 6 minutes in each quarter. There will be a time-out/substitution after 3 minutes to ensure all kids have equal playing time. The volunteer coaches will be on the court teaching the kids. Emphasis will be on developing skills such as dribbling, shooting, and passing. We will also work on teamwork and playing as a team.

Teams will be made based on the schools the kids attend. This is not a competitive basketball league. The goal is to teach skills to the kids.

League Registration Cut-Off

• NO REQUESTS WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR ANY GRADE LEVEL. • Skill evaluations (not try-outs) are run for the purpose of distributing talent as evenly as possible throughout the league.

• As much as we try, this is not a scientific process.

• Every player should attend one of the skill evaluation days • Every player should attend their skill evaluation time listed on Thursday October 20 and Saturday October 22.

• A player information form must be filled out with basketball registration. The form can be downloaded from the park district web site or picked up at the registration desk.

League Registration will not be accepted after Monday, October 24 at 5:00PM. Any player registering after October 24 will be placed on a wait list and placed, if possible after the team selection process is completed (Friday October 28).

Skill Evaluations (You should attend one evaluation.)

Effective coaches fully support a positive youth sports philosophy in their attitude and behavior at practice, games and events. You help the players learn skills, discuss fair play and most of all, have fun. Look at coaching as an opportunity not only to teach sports skills, but also to achieve something far more significant –helping children reach their full potential.

All children in the league must attend skill evaluations. Coaches should be on hand to rate the kids. Times for each league are listed in the general league description. Plan to attend one session.

Frequently Asked Questions Q: Do I have to attend the skill evaluation if I have been in the league before?

Everyone in the league should attend the skill evaluation in order to accurately divide up the teams.

Q: Can I be on a team with my Friends?

In the spirit of competition, the park district does not accept friendship requests.

Q: On what days will my child play?

There will be one practice during the week, with a game on Saturday. When signing up you will be asked to fill out a player information sheet which includes days your child is available to best accommodate you.

Q: What should I do if I have a conflict with the practice time?

If you have a conflict with your practice day then you can contact the Athletic Supervisor and request a change to a different practice day.

Q: If I am unable to attend a practice or game who should I contact?

COHO Age Group Program

Within our Age Group Program, we offer 3 levels for swimmers ages 10 and under and 3 levels for swimmers ages 11 and over. In both age groups these levels are White, Blue and Red. In the White levels, swimmers will learn the technical aspects of all four of the competitive strokes, be introduced to training concepts, and develop skills needed for competition. In the more advanced Blue and Red levels, swimmers will build upon elements previously learned; continuing to improve technique, expanding on knowledge of training concepts, and refining skills for competition. Swimmers must follow the practice schedule for their assigned group. All practices are at Deerfield High School.

COHO Senior Program

Our Senior Program is designed to incorporate the training needs of all high school age swimmers. There are 2 groups within the Senior Program (Gold 1 and Gold 2). Swimmers must follow the practice schedule for their group. The schedule for AM practices and dryland will be posted once finalized around the HS girls schedule.

In Gold 1 we provide an environment for high school boys to get in shape for their HS swim season. Swimmers may attend a maximum of one practice per day during the week (AM or PM) and Saturday practices. Participation in swim meets is optional but encouraged.

In Gold 2 we provide a more intense environment for swimmers who are dedicated to training and competing year-round. Swimmers are expected to attend at least 85% of all swim and dryland workouts (AM, PM and Saturdays). Participation in swim meets is expected. Swimmers who do not meet the expectations of Gold 2 will be re-assigned to Gold 1.

COHO Masters Program

For individuals 18 and older, COHO offers a Master swimming program.

Practices are run by a coach and designed for all levels. Masters do not need to pay the USA Swimming membership fee or the COHO club fee. Practices are at Deerfield High School on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30-9:00pm and Sundays from 8:00-9:30am. You may register to participate up to 3 times per week (Section 01), up to 2 times per week (Section 02) or 1 time per week (Section 03). No further pro-rating is available besides the 1,2,3 day per week options.

SRC Open Swim Lessons

Thinking about COHO Swim Club? Want more advanced skill work to prepare for a competitive swim team? These lessons will use similar instruction as the swim team to teach freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. The Deerfield Park District partners with LifeSport Management to provide year-round indoor and outdoor tennis and pickleball instruction. LifeSport Management and their team of professionals have been creating quality programming for adult and juniors of all levels since 1986. The goal is to nurture a love of the game and provide a foundation of sound mechanics for every student.

2023 WEEKEND PERMANENT TEE TIME LOTTERY During the regular golf season, there are times available each Saturday and Sunday for permanent tee time groups starting at 5:50 am until 8:50 am. Regularly scheduled Permanent Starting Times begin April 8 and 9 and end October 7 and 8.

Permanent tee time applications for the 2023 season and a $75/85 R/NR per person starting time application fee must be submitted to the golf course PRIOR to December 4, 2022 for the 2023 season. Applications are being accepted during regular business hours at the golf course, or application can be sent via email to jason@dfpd.org with payment being made online at deerfieldgolf.org.

There will be a virtual Saturday lottery draw for all existing 2022 permanent tee-time groups at approximately 7:10 pm on December 7 followed by a second draw at 7:40 pm for Sunday groups. This night’s virtual lottery draw is only for existing 2022 tee-time groups, any new groups wishing to procure a permanent tee-time spot on either Saturday or Sunday will be contacted for a 2nd virtual draw on a TBD date in December. Following the first lotteries all available tee times are posted on the Deerfield Golf Club website.

New Golf Passes and pre-paid tickets for the 2023 season can be purchased at both the golf course and on-line beginning December 1, 2023.

Jason Mannina

Jason has worked for the Deerfield Park District at the Deerfield Golf Club for 8 golf seasons. As the Director of Golf Operations, he oversees all guest experiences on property, from playing the course, to dining in the restaurant, to hitting golf balls at the range, lessons and programming.

As a member of The PGA of America he enjoys mentoring up-and-coming PGA apprentices through employment and

networking. In the off-season, Jason enjoys playing golf, traveling, following all sports, seeing live music and cooking.

Jason is a Palatine native and grew up playing at the Palatine Park District’s Palatine Hills Golf Course. He is an uncle to two awesome nieces and one of 3 adult children helping out with aging parents.

He enjoys coming to work every day because he can offer a fun recreational escape for all guests. He feels that everyone should “Be Proud of Yourself for How Hard You Work!”

Introduction to Jr. Golf, Motor Skills, & Fitness

Golf, Motor Skills, & Fitness is a golf-specific sports program that incorporates athletic movements with golf fundamentals. The program teaches kids the fundamentals of golf through a series of athletic drills, games, and activities. Our team of US Kids Certified Golf Instructors will use SNAG Golf equipment to keep the kids engaged and on task.

In addition to athletic movements, students will be introduced to the basics of putting, chipping, and full swing. This class is designed for an adult to accompany the child for each session.

Junior Masters

Our Junior Masters Golf program focuses on teaching our young golfers the fundamentals of the game of golf. Our goal is to provide the foundation for a lifetime of golf. In this class golfers will now use real golf equipment as we introduce full swing mechanics including grip, stance and posture. The class will also spend time on chipping, pitching and putting. This class has been designed for parent participation. Our instructors will help parents interact with their child as it relates to golf and help them provide proper feedback.

In our Advanced Masters class, students transition from a parent/ child focus to player independent learning (No Parents). Our Junior Tee Level class is designed for junior golfers that want to continue to develop the skills that they have learned in our Advanced Masters classes. Golfers are now strongly encouraged to play and practice on their own in addition to their scheduled class time. Deerfield Junior Golf Academy Travel Team

The goal of this program is to prepare team members for competitive situations that they will face in IJGA events, and eventually on their high school team. Our travel teams meet for practice two times per week throughout the season. Each practice will focus on skill development through a series of competitive drills and exercises led by our professional staff. Members of our travel team are encouraged to play and practice on their own in addition to scheduled practices and matches. In addition to the two weekly team practices, our players will compete in a series of nine-hole matches as part of the North Shore Junior Golf Tour.

These matches will occur at Deerfield Golf Club and at other local north shore clubs. Matches will take place on Saturdays for the fall session.

Team members will receive a team golf shirt or hat. Tournament round greens fees of $25 per player/per tournament not included.

Self Defense

This class puts your safety first as you learn practical self-defense.

Based on traditional Japanese Jujitsu, this course will focus on how to defend yourself from the most common attacks. It will also include traditional sweeps, throws and groundwork. David Shamrock

David has been the Manager of the Patty Turner Center for the past 11 years. After graduating from UIC with a degree in Art Education, his now 35+year career in senior programming affords David a wealth of experience in the areas of customer service, sales, marketing, programming and management. From the beginning, his goal was to create a warm, friendly and inviting environment where guests feel special, included and cared about.

Who is eligible?

Any household with a valid email address is eligible to register online. For Deerfield Park District residents to receive resident rates, proof of residence is required.

What programs are available?

The majority of park district programs are available online, with a few exceptions. These are usually programs that require tryouts, prerequisites or prior instructor approval.

Will I know right away if I get in?

Yes. Online registration works in real time, so, as soon as you complete the payment process and get a confirmation email your enrollment is confirmed. If a class is full, you may join the wait list online.

PROGRAM CANCELLATION

PLEASE REGISTER EARLY! If enough participants are not registered, classes may be canceled. Those waiting until the last minute or for the first day of class may find it’s too late.

REGISTRATION STEPS

• Print legibly in ink.

• Read the registration form carefully and fill it out completely, including class names, activity code numbers and sections.

• Once a registration form is turned in, it cannot be changed.

• When registering, provide details about medical condition(s) that require staff attention.

• If you fax in your form, please do not send a duplicate by mail.

• Payment may be made by check or Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express credit cards. If paying by credit card, make sure the card number, expiration date and cardholder’s signature are completed and legible on the registration form.

• Do not use cash if you drop off registrations in the drop-off box.

• An adult participant, parent or guardian must sign the waiver on the bottom of the registration form. It is mutually understood that the fax registration document, including the waiver and release of all claims, shall substitute for and have the same legal effect as the original form.

If you select a class and it’s full, you will be put on a waiting list. We will notify you of all class placements, cancellations, and/or changes.

PRIORITY REGISTRATION FOR RESIDENTS

People who live within the boundaries of the Deerfield Park District always have first priority in our registration process. However, having a Deerfield address does not always mean that you are a resident of our Park District. Program brochures are typically sent to the 60015 zip code, but this can include areas that are not part of the Deerfield Park District.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Residents experiencing difficulty paying program fees should contact the Park District.

RESIDENT & SPECIAL SCHOOL DISTRICT #109 AND #113 RATES

Resident rates will apply to those who live within the park district boundaries. If a participant does not live within the park district boundaries but enrolls in a program that is held at a District 109 or 113 school and they reside in that school district, then they pay the resident rate.

PROOF OF RESIDENCY

To receive “Resident” rates and priority in registration, you are required to show PROOF OF RESIDENCY when signing up for ANY Deerfield Park District program. Online registration users who have set up an account do not need to show proof of residency again at this time. Proof of residency includes both: • A current residential utility bill (gas, electric, water-no phone bills accepted) with your name stating your mailing address and service address as being the same.

• A valid driver’s license or photo-ID containing your current address.

Proof of residency needs to be brought in to Jewett Park Community Center, Patty Turner Center, Sachs Recreation Center or Deerfield Golf Club. We do this to ensure that the registration procedures remain fair.

IMPROPER REGISTRATION

Those who register for our programs and improperly use a Deerfield address are removed from the class and no refund or transfer fee is provided. Non-residents pay a higher fee per program. Non-resident fees are shown second in program descriptions. Note: Non-residents are not eligible for resident fees even if their caretaker, provider or relative resides in Deerfield.

CONTRIBUTIONS TO SCHOLARSHIPS

Voluntary contributions to the Deerfield Park Foundation for our Scholarship Fund can be made on the registration form. The fund is used for people who are in serious financial need, to participate in park district programs. The Board of Park Commissioners has a policy that no person will be denied access to recreation programs or facilities because of an inability to pay fees. Please know that the program is strictly confidential and is closely monitored by the Director of Recreation. We appreciate your support.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION REFUNDS FOR RECREATION PROGRAMS

A recreation program is defined as a program in which park district personnel teach activities or skills over a period of two or more class meetings. Sports leagues, camps, preschool, Before Care, After School Club, trips, Sarah Hall Theatre, special events, season passes and oneday classes and workshops are considered special refund categories.

• A refund may be obtained two business days prior to the first day of class/program. A 10 percent service charge ($5 minimum; $10 maximum) will be deducted from the amount paid for the program(s).

• Once a program or class begins, and prior to it ending, you may request a prorated refund based on the number of classes attended and the date the refund request is received. A 10 percent service charge ($5 minimum; $10 maximum) will be assessed.

• If a class is rescheduled, relocated, or changed by the park district, a total refund will be made if requested by the participant.

• Refunds will be offered if a class is canceled or closed by the park district.

• If a participant is dropped from a program at the request and discretion of the district staff, a refund will be made, less prorated cost of classes held.

• In lieu of a refund, participants may transfer money to other currently offered activities. The amount to be transferred (refunded) will be prorated based on the number of classes that have already been held.

SERVICES FOR RESIDENTS WITH DISABILITIES Deerfield Park District is a partner with Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association (NSSRA). Formed in 1970, NSSRA is an extension of ten park districts, two cities and one village in the northern suburbs of Chicago providing and facilitating recreation programs and services for children, teens and adults with disabilities. NSSRA offers recreation, sport, cultural and social programs and events available year-round, creating new experiences, opportunities for skill development, leisure time, and perhaps most importantly, friendship. NSSRA has been creating an environment of belonging through play since 1970, and has the distinction of being the first Special Recreation Association in the country.

We believe that everyone should have the chance to try something new. This means you have the opportunity to participate in any one of NSSRA’s 500 annual programs, or that you have the opportunity to participate in one of the Deerfield Park District programs with the assistance of an NSSRA Inclusion companion.

• The Deerfield Park District will provide NSSRA with an Inclusion request that contains both program and participant information.

• You will be contacted by NSSRA to discuss the needs of the participant and get input on the type of support required.

• NSSRA will work with the Deerfield Park District to put the necessary Inclusion accommodations in place for participation in the desired program(s).

PARK DISTRICT PHILOSOPHY

The Park Board recognizes the need to provide and maintain sufficient and attractive parks, open space, recreation facilities and programs to serve equitably, and without prejudice, all the people of the Park District in the provision of leisure time activities.

Every opportunity shall be afforded, within financial limits, to plan, procure, develop and maintain park and recreation resources, and to provide leadership for the wholesome and constructive use of leisure time. The provisions of quality recreational services in the most efficient manner, at the least possible cost, and without significantly duplicating the efforts of other agencies, will be emphasized at all times. This includes the development of cooperative agreements with other agencies directly and indirectly involved with leisure services in the District.

The provision of recreation, park and conservation services must be considered as a positive opportunity for people of the District to share with each other, to develop leadership capacities, to learn skills for present and future enjoyment, and to emphasize responsibilities to each other as well as to the community.

KEEP OUR PARKS BEAUTIFUL

To provide safe, healthy and aesthetically pleasing parks, we engage in the limited use of lawn care products as part of an integrated pest management program. A one-time annual application of herbicide to park and school sites is usually completed between Aug. 15 – Nov. 1 of each year. We publicize the date of the application and inform the appropriate school sites and residents who have asked to be advised of this process.

PARTICIPANT CONDUCT

The Deerfield Park District reserves the right to suspend, expel or deny participation in any program or facility to any person whose behavior materially interferes or disrupts the quality of those offerings, the enjoyment of them by other participants or the ability of staff to conduct or manage the activities or facilities.

A child’s parent or guardian will be notified of the first incident; the second incident shall require the presence of a parent at a meeting with the instructor and a Park District administrator/supervisor; a third incident may result in the expulsion or suspension of the child from the program, event or facility.

If a child engages in behavior(s) which may result in bodily harm to others, an immediate meeting with the parent may be called. If such behavior warrants it, immediate suspension or expulsion may result.

Temporary suspension from participation due to misconduct will not entitle participant to a refund.

An adult shall receive one verbal or written warning. The second incident may result in suspension from the program, event or facility.

If an adult physically strikes a person or object or throws an object at another person, or takes any other action that may pose a real threat of bodily harm to others, or is verbally abusive to others, s/he may immediately be suspended or expelled from the program or facility.

PHOTO PERMISSION

Our staff or designees often take pictures or video at programs and events. Photographers from print or other media outlets may also take pictures or video on occasion. We welcome the coverage and hope you do too; it is frequently how the public learns what is happening at the Park District. If you prefer your family members’ pictures not be taken, please notify us in writing. NOTE: If you do see a photo posted to our websites or social media pages of you or your family member that you would like removed, please email Sherry@deerfieldparks.org.

The safety of our participants, visitors and staff is our top priority. We will continue to establish protocols based on COVID-19 guidelines established by Federal, State of Illinois, county and local entities. Thank you for your cooperation.

INSURANCE

Deerfield Park District cannot assume responsibility for injuries or accidents occurring at programs, activities, parks and facilities within our jurisdiction. To do so would make our program and user fees prohibitive. Certain activities, facilities and equipment may, when used improperly, cause harm or personal injury. We make every effort to notify you of potentially dangerous situations and to provide rules for the proper use of equipment and facilities. You can avoid injury by following the rules, using good sense and being considerate of both Park District property and others using it.

EMERGENCY CLOSING

There may be times when weather, road conditions or facility malfunctions dictate that programs and/or services must be canceled, or temporarily postponed or entire facilities closed. The park district will communicate to patrons via the park district website deerfieldparks.org. Whenever School District 109 cancels school due to snow related weather conditions, all Deerfield Park District Preschool classes and all programs held at school sites will also be canceled.

Closing other park district facilities or canceling classes will be made on a case by case basis.

BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR

Please respect the rights and property of neighbors of our parks. Use public sidewalks/pathways. Drive carefully in lots, driveways and nearby streets. Trees, bushes, fences, etc., should not be used as bathrooms. Keep your dog on a leash, remain on public property, clean up pet waste, and place trash in park receptacles. To report vandalism, call the Deerfield Police Non-emergency line, 847-945-8636.

AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT

Our Park District and other public agencies are subject to the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) which prohibits discrimination in the services, programs or facilities provided to individuals with disabilities. If you believe that, in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, special assistance may be required when participating in a program, using a facility or receiving a service, please call Laura McCarty, Director of Recreation at 847-572-2615.

THORGUARD

ThorGuard Lightning Prediction Systems are installed at all parks, pools and schools in Deerfield, from April through November. Horns are tested the first Tuesday of each of these months, at 10 AM. Should you hear the horn or see the strobe light at other times—or any time lightning seems possible—be sure to seek shelter. The system is meant to warn the public that conditions are right for possible lightning danger. This system is not 100 percent accurate, as it operates on radio waves which are variable. As not every unit will go off simultaneously, the public is asked to please use common sense when conditions appear threatening, even if ThorGuard warnings are not heard or seen.

Follow these warnings for safety:

• One prolonged horn blast signifies a strong lightning risk.

• The strobe light signals a continuing lightning alert condition.

• Three short horn blasts (and ceasing of strobe light illumination) signal it may be safe to return to the area, but use discretion.

INFECTIOUS DISEASES, FOOD ALLERGIES, MEDICATION, ILLNESS

Infectious Diseases: To prevent the spread of communicable diseases, such as strep, pink eye and fifth’s disease, parents should report any diagnosed cases to the Park District office. If exposure to other participants occurred, a notification is sent home.

Food Allergies: Many of our preschool, as well as cooking and other classes, will serve food; therefore, it is imperative that you notify the full-time Recreation Supervisor of any food allergies or dietary restrictions your child may have.

Medication: If your child requires medication (inhaler, epi-pen, etc.) during class, medication administration forms must be completed.

John Greene

Sachs Recreation Center

After starting 28 years ago as a Grounds Specialist, John is now the Special Project Supervisor in the parks department. His responsibilities consist of construction, carpentry, playground maintenance, fencing, drainage, signage, lightning prediction, tree removals, parking lots and hard surface court maintenance.

John’s love of his job is displayed by his reliability and willing to come into work for special events or emergency situations. No matter what the challenge, John can be counted on to figure out a solution. “It’s satisfying to finish a project, step back and see what’s been accomplished and know that you were a part of it.”

Monitoring weather conditions and independently responding to after-hours snow and ice removal are just a couple of John’s specialties. His innovative and creative solutions to challenges has led him to winning five “Gadget Awards” at the Great Lakes Park Training Institute in Indiana.

John has been married to Linda for 43 years and they have a daughter, Jennifer. He enjoys car racing, camping, and spending time with his family. Most summer weekends, John spends time in Wisconsin either camping or at the racetrack.

He is a crew chief mechanic for a racing team that competes at numerous car races throughout the Midwest. John is also an avid photographer and has won several awards including IPRA showcase.
