PTC Men’s Club

The PTC is delighted to present a series of Sunday afternoon band concerts featuring conductor Art Hildebrand and the Deerfield Community Band. These special concerts are open to all and will feature a different theme each month. Please join us!

The Patty Turner Center Men’s Club is a group of over 80 men who meet every Tuesday morning for high quality programs. Coffee, pastries, and camaraderie begin at 8:15am and programs are from 8:45am – 10:00am. Members come to hear presentations by professional speakers on history, art, travel, science, government, and local, national, and international current events. Members consistently characterize the speakers as well informed, engaging, challenging, interesting, and educational. To join in the PTC Men’s Club, you must be a member of the Patty Turner Center. On Friday, May 13th, we will discuss the book, “A Man Called Ove” by Fredrik Backman. What a great variety of classic reading matter! If you are interested in becoming a member of this group, please join us.

Pioneering saleswoman Brownie Wise propelled Tupperware to success in the 1950s using home parties. In this program, Wise shares the story of her rise from a divorced mother to head of Tupperware’s home party sales force. By 1954, she had 9,000 saleswomen and had transformed Tupperware into a multi-million-dollar business. Join us for this fond and nostalgic program about the company which became the gold standard for home party selling!

April: “Clara Schumann: From Love Story to Piano Concerto” Celebrate the arrival of Spring with a beautifully romantic work for piano and orchestra! Clara Schumann was one of the greatest pianists of the 19th century. When she was only thirteen, she fell in love with the fledgling composer, Robert Schumann.

Together, they collaborated on the first movement of her passionately intense piano concerto. Later, at age fifteen, she completed it. Discover this highly emotional work as an immortal prelude to their amazing love story.

May: “Brahms and his Lost Love”

Deerfield Park District Art Show

May is the birth month of Johannes Brahms, one of the greatest composers of all time. In his twenties, he met Agathe von Siebold. The two spent seemingly endless days together basking in the beauties of nature and in each other’s company. But differences in their beliefs to the social norms of their time led to a heartbreaking separation, a breakup which would haunt both of them for years. Brahms, as a young composer, channeled the wonder, the joy and the heartbreak of this romance in his String Sextet #2.

Discover the “Agathe” themed in the work as the strings seem to cry out to her, and experience the final acceptance of his breakup in Agathe’s own heartrending words.

The Patty Turner Center is thrilled to host this year’s Deerfield Park District Art Show which will be held on Sunday, April 10th. Come and enjoy the student works of the Park District’s very own Elaine Silberman, Mari Krasney and Richard Cohen. Details coming soon!

Film Series Class with Reid Schultz POST WWII ITALIAN CINEMA Join writer, filmmaker and academic Reid Schultz as we analyze some of the greatest and most influential European films of the past 50 years.

Beginning in the silent era, Italian cinema had a major global presence, yet its biggest influence was to come after WWII. Following the war, with much of Italy in ruins, screenwriter Caesar Zavattini created a new national cinema, one that reflected the reality of Italy at that time. From this came the Italian Neo Realism film movement and the success of this new movement took the film world by storm with new voices such as Vittorio De Sica changing cinema forever.

Once this period of film came to a conclusion by the 1950s, Italian cinema exploded in new and vibrant directions exploring comedies, dramas, thrillers, and fantasy films to even greater international success.

This course will explore the roots and achievement of Neo Realism and the new filmmakers that emerged afterwards including Federico Fellini, Michelangelo Antonioni, and Luchino Visconti.

May: “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” Presented by Rochelle Pennington

No other Great Lakes shipwreck is better known than that of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The ship disappeared into stormy Lake Superior on November 10th, 1975, when winds peaked at nearly 100 miles per hour and waves reached the height of three story buldings.

Pennington delves into the various theories and opposing views of dive detectives who are still trying to solve the mystery of what led to the demise of the 29-man crew. We will be led from the launch of the ship to its final radio broacasts and from Fitz’s discovery on Superior’s bottom to the raising of artifacts from its watery grave.

Our part-time staff member, Margie Fischer, M.A., offers a variety of helpful information and referrals to members of our community. Topics include in-home services, community resources, help with applying for benefits, Medicare information, caregiver support and more. Margie has compiled a handy resource booklet tailored to our local area. The 40-page Guide to Community Services for Older Adults and Their Families is available for free at the Patty Turner Center. It can be mailed out upon request. Margie is generally in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday.

SHIP Answers Your Medicare Questions

Senior Citizens’ Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption On Friday, April 29th, the Chief County Assessment Office of Lake County will be visiting the PTC to offer assistance to those who may qualify for the Senior Citizens’ Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption.

This exemption applies to an owner occupied principal residence for people 65 years old and older meeting set criteria of income limitations. This exemption must be applied for every year through the Chief County Assessment Office. No appointments are needed.

Interested parties are to visit the PTC between the hours of 1:00pm and 3:00pm. This will be held in the PTC Members’ Room B.

Increase Your Access to the World West Deerfield Township has a program for residents with various disabilities aimed at improving their access to the community. Grants of up to $1000 per household per year may be awarded to residents to help meet specific needs which often impede accessibility at home and in the community. Expenses which may qualify for this program include home remodeling/adaptation, mobility equipment, communication devices, etc.

Caruso “GrandFriends” Fund Did you know there is a small fund available to assist lower income older adults to pay a portion of their membership and program fees at the PTC? The GrandFriends Fund was originated and is supported by the fundraising efforts of the students at Caruso Middle School. What a great bunch of kids! Margie can provide eligibility and program information.

Dementia Support Group We now host a monthly Alzheimer’s Association support group at the PTC. It is for family caregivers of individuals in the middle to later stages of dementia.

Meetings offer emotional and educational support as well as camaraderie. Join us on the 1st Monday of each month at 2 pm. Just drop in! It’s FREE and open to all family members. Social Services Blue Bag Program Keeps Documents Handy Be prepared! This handy all-in-one blue packet contains information ready to grab in case of a medical emergency. It includes forms regarding for health info, emergency contacts, advanced directives and more. It comes with instructions to be placed where our local emergency personnel know to look for it. This is a collaborative effort between the PTC and the Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Department and is available at the PTC free of charge to local residents

Do care obligations keep you from attending our Support Groups? Here’s a solution! Through our treasured partnership with Faith In Action Volunteers, we are able to offer some respite options. On-site supervision of your loved one in our front lobby may be available during the Alzheimer and ACES meetings. Care recipients must be comfortable being apart from their loved one, have appropriate behavior, and be able to use the restroom on their own. Also, on a more limited basis, a trained Faith in Action volunteer may come to your home, if needed, while you attend the ACES meeting. For both services, prescreening and reservations are required. There is never a fee. Please call Margie at PTC for eligibility requirements and more information.

Teen Connect Program!

Teen Connect links Deerfield teens with Deerfield older adults to assist with outdoor jobs such as lawn care, snow shoveling, leaf removal, etc. Upon request, older adults will be mailed/emailed a list of participating teens, along with their availability and expected rate of pay. The senior is responsible for contacting the teen and making the financial and scheduling arrangements. The program is intended for those unable to do the work themselves, unable to afford the cost of a professional contractor on a regular basis, or only requiring assistance on an asneeded basis. ACES: Caregiver Support Are you caring for your spouse, parent, or other relative? If so, you may feel tired, overwhelmed, stressed, sad, or frustrated. Perhaps you need caregiving tips or leads on resources. Studies show that caregivers reduce stress, have improved health, and provide better care when part of a caregiver support group. The group is not disease specific, it focuses on the caregiver. Join our vital group to meet others in our community who, like you, are caring for an older adult loved one. Pay Attention!

How the Illinois Budget Crisis Affects Some Programs: In case you haven’t heard, the state is no longer mailing reminders about license plate registration stickers or emissions testing to vehicle owners. But if you’re delinquent, you still get a ticket!! Check your sticker’s expiration date! The same goes for the vehicle emissions test, too. You can request the Secretary of State to send you email reminders. Just Google “Secretary of State Illinois Green” and you’ll find the website, then enter your vehicle registration and PIN#. The Benefit Access Program (License Plate Discount & Senior Rides Free Card) is also affected. The state is currently running TWO months behind with processing. Allow yourself enough time to get your benefit!! Many folks, through no fault of their own, have lost the benefit or have had to pay late fees. Check when your BAP eligibility expires, or have Margie at PTC look it up for you. It is suggested you renew at the first opportunity, which is three months prior to expiration. For those of you unfamiliar with the BAP: One must be 65 or older--or over 16 and totally disabled; AND have an annual income from all sources under $27,610 for singles or $36,635 for couples. The application is good for two years. ALL applications and documentation must be submitted online, no paper forms exist. You can do it yourself at the Illinois Department on Aging’s website. Deerfield residents and PTC members can make an appointment with Margie and she will do it for you!

“Do you know about Open Communities Homesharing Program?”

The Open Communities Homesharing Program matches north suburban homeowners who have rooms to share with renters who need them. The Homesharing Program has facilitated almost 1000 matches in 16 communities since 1985. It gives people the opportunity to remain in their homes and receive extra income while also providing affordable housing for renters. A Shared Housing Coordinator pre-screens both parties in order to learn about preferences and living habits. The next steps include the application process, interviews, and Open Communities viewing the home. The Coordinator checks character references and verifies income and employment. Compatibility is an important factor in making a match. Open Communities attempts to bring people together that will be a good fit and will have an enjoyable living experience. Home providers and renters make the final decision of whether they want to live together and the Coordinator is available to facilitate the process.
