On a Journey

Architecture Portfolio

About Me Exploring new materials has always been my interest. Working closely with material such as Bamboo and Concrete have given me aspects of two completely different form of material. Along with it I have worked with Timber, Mud and Rammed Earth. This continuous exploration of materials and coming up with joineries to combine them together is important to me in design. I believe that surrounding context is as essential as the built form itself. I am keen to learn about construction sequence, process and details and integration of surroundings to the building form and spaces.

Material Studio Precast Concrete:

The Concept of Precast Structures, also known as prefabricated/modular structures, is that the structural components are standardized and are only assembled on the site.

A Slice of Fresh Cake: Cube Construction

Material: Modular Blocks . Constructing a cube of 15cm x 15 cm. Using a single self-evolving module . Evolving at corners, sides and in between spaces. Creating an interlocking System . Play of Mass and Void. Shadow effects due to Mass and Void . Process Models

Redesign Existing Built Form: Taking a traditional Kutch house of Gujarat, a bhunga and designing it using only modular/precast blocks. The openings are made by subtracting the modules from the rhythmic pattern. Following a lego joinery to keep the building a form of dry construction technique. The module evolves itself to give a clean flushed opening for the door.

A Journey towards the site: The Site is situated in the old city .The site is rich in flora, something that its neighbors are sparse of. The bungalows on the periphery acting as compound walls and the high storey apartments that surround the site guarding it with its cool shade.

Material Studio

In an urge to design an institute that would home the development of a particular material, in this case, it being Precast Concrete. The institute itself is a dominating structure made of precast concrete modules that are assembled using its unique joineries and methodology. With a single module evolving in scale and at times in volume to get in different kind of light and to house different sets of activities throughout the day. The program is about how the institute works in the development and understanding of the material. Not so formal in its character yet a discipline that governs the relationship between the architects and the artisans and sometimes even students. 2

Re-Source Housing Studio

In an attempt to create a housing community that works together as one single unit in managing a particular resouce, in this case water, a programme of low cost housing community was set up. The community collects rain water, harvests it and further optimises its use.

The Site: Anhilwad Patan With an annual average rainfall of 500mm. The daily needs of water are met by digging bore-wells that is decreasing the water table of the whole area. This Community focuses on Rainwater Harvesting methods and even optimal use of water by treating and recycling and reusing both Grey and Black water. The site has a strong historic context of Rani-Ki-Vav and The Sahastralinga Talav. They are nationally renowned water structures built in the ages of the kings for the purpose of storing and treating water and further using it for daily use by the people.

Studio House Design Piet Mondrian : Painter

Mondrian was a contributor to the De Stijl art movement and group, which was founded by Theo van Doesburg. He evolved a non-representational form which he termed neoplasticism. This consisted of white ground, upon which he painted a grid of vertical and horizontal black lines and the three primary colors.

Working Drawing Taking forward the Material Studio Project for working drawings. Major challenge was to come up with different Precast Concrete Joineries. Resolving all the details using sketches before touching any drafting software was a good way to go about it.

Basic Design To develop the basic skill set of design, expression, the thinking process and model making. These are the following exercises done to up bring those skill sets.

Playing with the volume on a strict interconnected geometry.

Interactive Cube Design Abstraction using cubes and prisms. Further, using gelatin paper to give it a meaning. 13

Basic Design

Understanding the scale and proportion of different elements and how they respond to our human body in terms of dominance. Further making a 1:10 scale model of our own body to understand the human proportion system.

Designing a kiosk. to accomodate 10 people. The context chosen is that of a beach hence the kiosk is open, semi-open and closed at the same time

Basic Design

Taking inspiration form M.C.Escher and developing our own interlocking tranformation painting.

Taking a Human Face and slicing it down vertically. to form layers such as contours.

Taking a cube and developing it as a single surface instead of its 6 conventional surfaces. This is done by drawing as well as puncturing on the cube 15

Workshop

Bamboo Workshop

This is a collective workshop where we learn basics of Bamboo as a material. Further, the bamboo shed was constructed by us. understanding the sequence and process of construction in nonconventional mmaterial like bamboo.

Various Joineries were explored and created to understand the material and develop the hand skills before the actual construction of the shed.

Poetics of Bamboo Tensegrity : Bali, Indonesia Tensegrity is a design principle that applies when a discontinuous set of compression elements is opposed and balanced by a continuous tensile force, thereby creating an internal Pre-stress that stabilizes the entire structure.

Photography I believe in making a photograpgh instead of taking one. It is not about capturing it but composing it. To do so one must act fast and have the skill to anticipate not only a moving object but also a stationary one.

Architectural Photography We know that a built structure communicates a lot of things such as power and technology. These are topped all over by aesthetics and the way of articulation of the building. Architectural photography tries to capture not only the above mentioned but even the small details and joineries that have been worked out by fellow Architects. Sometimes architectural photography also captures the essence and pure abstraction of a particular object. It is the skill of the photographer that conveys not only the buildings form and design but also the emotions, patterns and its surrounding context.
