Integral Group was launched in 2008 by Kevin Hydes, founder and former director of Canada Green Building Council, and former Chair of the USGBC and World GBC. We provide a full range of building and district systems engineering, analysis and sustainability consulting services, delivered by staff widely regarded as innovative leaders in their fields.

Our services include Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health (MEP) systems, fire and lighting design, master-plan support, climate change adaptation and resilience, strategic sustainability, wellness consultancy, microclimate analysis, advanced energy modeling and building physics.

We’re home to dreamers and innovators, systems thinkers and the people with the big ideas backed up by the technical knowhow to deliver.

We bring cost-effective solutions to the challenges of resource efficiency, resilience, health and well-being through our unique approach to engineering and strategy in the design, performance and optimization of buildings, communities, districts and cities.

Introduction 2018 has been a watershed year for Integral Group.

In just ten years we have grown to over 500 employees working across 17 offices. We have now delivered projects in over 30 countries, with over 100 Net Zero Energy projects to our name.

We are rewriting the rule books that will make net zero carbon buildings the norm within a generation.

It has been a year of continued growth, achievement and excellence across the firm. It was also a year in which the climate crisis came to the fore and calls for pragmatic and cost-effective solutions grew ever louder.

We continue to channel our passion and expertise to protecting our planet today and for future generations, one project at a time, district by district, country by country.

Our second Annual Report shares just a small selection of highlights for this year, drawn from across Integral, including: • Gaining global recognition and awards for both our innovative projects and our incredible staff.

• Expanding our presence into new markets - through a partnership with Elementa Engineering in New York, and by welcoming Mission Green Buildings in Calgary into the Integral family.

• Rapid growth of one of our newest service offerings, Fire Engineering. Strategic hires joined the Vancouver, Oakland and London Offices to grow this new service area.

• Being one of three founding signatories of the World Green Building Council’s Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment.

• Supporting the Global Climate Action Summit that took place in San Francisco.

• Publication of our first Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility report • Advancing policy, undertaking cutting-edge research and development as well as sharing software and tools that have impacts far beyond our own projects.

Welcome 2018 was the year in which Integral Group achieved scale.

With over 500 passionate staff around the globe we have built a network that can confidently tackle projects of any size or type, in any climate.

2018 was also the year in which the lexicon changed - from talking about Climate Change to responding to a Climate Emergency.

The challenges we faced in 2018 are even greater than when the Integral journey began, yet I look forward to our next decade more hopeful than ever.

We’re part of a movement with unstoppable momentum.

With strength in numbers now is the time to redouble our efforts, scale up, stand up, and make our dream of a sustainable tomorrow a reality.

In 2018, through our partnership with Elementa Engineering DPC in New York we expanded our presence in our US East region.

By the end of 2018 Integral Group numbered over 500 staff.

In 2019 our global footprint has continued to grow with the addition of offices in Melbourne and Brisbane as Umow Lai joined the Group, together with new office openings in San Diego, Belgrade and Edmonton.

TELUS Garden Residential Vancouver, BC, Canada

This civic icon of sustainability features a central plant with high efficiency heat pumps and waste heat recovery.

Two elevated ‘roof forests’ span over 10,000 square feet. Innovative features include radiant heating and cooling, demand driven ventilation and LED lighting. TELUS Garden is designed to be 35% more energy efficient than the relevant ASHRAE base case.

Boulder Commons Boulder, Colorado

The project includes 100,000 square feet of speculative office buildings, with amenity retail and restaurant spaces and was designed to achieve Zero Net Energy (ZNE) with the goal of proving the financial viability of ZNE commercial buildings.

Passive design features include daylight harvesting, solar shading, automated interior blinds, natural ventilation, highly insulated and airtight envelope, with the use of thermal mass to regulate internal temperatures.

SFO Administration Campus San Francisco International Airport

The Consolidated Administration Campus facility includes museum storage space, offices and conference center. In-slab radiant heating and cooling created an expanded thermal comfort range for building occupants.

Ventilation is provided through a dedicated outdoor air system (DOAS), which separates the exhaust air from the outside air used for ventilation so the supply air is cleaner and never composed of recirculated air. © Henrik Kam

Boden UK Headquarters London, UK

Clothing company Boden was keen to invest in well-being measures to improve productivity in the conversion of an existing warehouse and parking structure into modern studio and workspace.

We worked closely with the architect to maximize daylight, upgrade the building envelope, and to provide effective temperature control with increased fresh air supply rates. © Jefferson Smith

Half Moon Bay Library Half Moon Bay, CA

A net zero energy building incorporating a 488 kW rooftop photovoltaic array.

The library features natural daylight and views, healthy indoor air quality provided by natural ventilation with mechanical assist, passive cooling, active heating, energy efficient equipment, and active space cooling where required.

It showcases responsible design and its environmental impacts to staff and visitors alike.

Interface Headquarters Atlanta, GA

A deep retrofit to a 1950s office building with a focus on indoor environment, energy conservation and water efficiency.

Analysis informed the re-skinning of the building, which reduced HVAC loads by 20%. An open ceiling layout was chosen to showcase building systems.

A 15,000 gallon on-site rainwater harvesting and treatment system offsets 100% of the water required for toilet flushing and green roof irrigation.

The Arbour

Toronto, ON, Canada The Arbour, anticipated to become Toronto’s first tall wood, low carbon institutional building, will bring a unique Deep Green element to the George Brown College waterfront campus.

The 10-story state-of-the-art structure will be the first Tall Wood Research Institute in the country, with materials sourced nationally.

TreeHouse Store Dallas, TX

Sustainable home improvement store TreeHouse has a mission: “We exist to make homes beautiful, healthy and sustainable. For everyone.”

Its flagship Dallas store is designed as a leading example of passive sustainable design and net zero energy construction.

Low energy systems include high volume low speed fans and overhead LED lighting. A south-facing rooftop PV array meets 100% of annual electricity demand.

SFU Student Centre Burnaby, BC, Canada

The building will be integrated with three existing neighboring functioning buildings and connect to Simon Fraser University’s existing district energy system and infrastructure.

Careful consideration of the various space types informed the HVAC and system zoning strategy to maintain thermal comfort while achieving simple and robust systems that are easy to maintain. © Perkins & Will

Hackbridge Primary School London, UK

The school will be net zero carbon, zero primary energy and Passivhaus Plus certified.

It will be a highly sustainable environment to learn in and an environment to learn from.

Careful consideration has been taken to select materials that are healthy, have low embodied energy and are easy to construct and maintain. The internal environment is developed to maximize natural day lighting and fresh air provision.

Financial Times London, UK

Bracken House, designed by Hopkins Architects was the first post-war building in England to be granted heritage protection.

Its renovation brings the Financial Times back to a building they last occupied in the 1980s when it housed their printing press.

The renovation includes open plan offices, meeting and conference rooms, a TV broadcasting studio and a 250 seat restaurant.

AUB Medical Center Beirut, Lebanon

Located southeast of the main American University of Beirut (AUB) campus, the new Medical Center is designed to house four distinct healthcare sectors, including a children’s hospital, cancer center, adult inpatient tower and new procedure spaces.

Building envelope, solar control and daylighting strategies combine to protect patient well-being, reduce energy demands and increase building resiliency.

Waltzing Matilda Center Winton, Australia

The outback town of Winton is home to Queensland’s Iconic Waltzing Matilda Centre, honoring the great Australian poet, Banjo Paterson’s Australian anthem.

After devastating fire damage in 2015, the newly rebuilt $22 million center will lead the Western Queensland community into a new and exciting journey of tourism and historical significance. * Engineered by Umow Lai, an award-winning Australian consultancy that joined Integral Group in 2019

Sustainable DC Plan Review Washington, DC

In 2013, the District of Columbia adopted an ambitious plan to become the most sustainable city in the United States. Integral led a team of subconsultant subject matter experts in conducting rigorous quantitative analysis to determine whether the District is on track to meet the objectives laid out in the plan and to make recommendations to the Department of Energy & Environment to shape a revised framework for an updated Sustainable DC 2.0 plan.

San Francisco State University Infrastructure & Utilities Plan San Francisco, CA

Against a backdrop of issues including sea level rise and climate change, SFSU have set ambitious goals of Zero Net Energy and Zero Net Water.

The plan responds by outlining strategies and sustainable energy programs for climate neutrality, Zero Net Energy, renewable energy and energy storage, district energy, and Zero Net Water and Zero Net Waste programs.

Oakridge Center Redevelopment Vancouver, BC

This 4.7 million square feet development included optimization of passive design elements of proposed new developments, as well as identifying synergies between the variety of building typologies to recapture and reuse energy and resource flows among them, while reducing operational and embodied carbon associated with the entire site.

Global Climate Action Summit The 2018 Global Climate Action Summit (GCAS) was held in San Francisco, California.

The summit’s aim was to inspire deeper commitments from national governments, and each other, in support of the Paris Agreement across five key areas: • Healthy Energy Systems • Inclusive Economic Growth • Sustainable Communities • Land and Ocean Stewardship • Transformative Climate Investments.

Staff from our Oakland office represented Integral at several events.

Live video feeds from the Summit were broadcast across our company intranet, and those who attended gave recorded presentations on their findings to the entire firm.

GCAS was the platform for the official launch of the World Green Building Council’s Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment, to which Integral were technical advisors and founding signatories.

LEED Proven Providers Integral Group earned USGBC LEED Proven Provider status for Building Design + Construction (BD+C) LEED projects.

The designation streamlines the LEED project review process for experienced organizations that demonstrate consistent excellence in administering LEED projects.

CSER We released our first annual Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility (CSER) Report in 2018.

In 2018 Megan led the delivery of Integral’s first annual Corporate Social and Environmental Sustainability Report.

Our senior management team expanded to reflect our commitment to CSER.

It set out Integral’s vision, goals and performance targets across four areas of focus:

Advancing Net Zero As sponsors of the World Green Building Council’s Advancing Net Zero program Integral provided technical support to the World Green Building Council in the development of the Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment.

At the CaGBC conference in Toronto, we became one of three founding signatories alongside Signify (formerly Philips Lighting) and Majid al Futtaim.

We have committed to Zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2020 across our office locations globally, continuing to actively promote opportunities for net zero carbon on all our projects, by removing technical, financial and perceptual barriers to achieving this goal.

Signing up to the Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment was a natural next step for us in our drive to build high performance buildings that respect and enrich the earth.

Envisaging Engineering Our visualization team develop cutting-edge 3D animations and visualizations. They reveal to our clients how building systems and environments interact which would be impossible using traditional 2D images.

They can demonstrate dynamic effects - such as heat transfer and air movement, and building and climate interfaces - including sun paths, shadows, and seasonal response.

The team work with our engineers to communicate engineering concepts with clarity, with manufacturers to explain new technologies and with project teams to bring integrated design proposals to life.

Wellness Matters The British Council for Offices sets the global benchmark for Class A Office Space. In 2018 it published it biggest research project to date: Wellness Matters.

Integral Group’s UK office Elementa Consulting - were lead authors of a roadmap with global impact.

The project reviewed existing sustainability and wellness tools, medical and well-being evidence base, public policy and guidance with direct engagement from leading UK and US institutions.

It offers a comprehensive set of 55 health and well-being outcomes, developed with input from the world’s leading academic and medical authorities. Many are not addressed by existing rating tools yet are critical to our wellness.

Based on integrated design process principles it guides users to what matters, how to measure it, what actions could be considered, who should lead, the strength and salience of evidence, and extent of coverage within rating tools.

The roadmap was launched at the BCO Berlin Conference in July 2018. Subsequent events have attracted over 1,000 attendees. It has featured in articles across the web, CIBSE Journal, Mix Interiors, Property Week and FM Journal.

Clients love its simplicity and strategic approach. We’ve made evidence-based wellness open to everyone.

NextGen District Energy We are innovating and implementing flexible, nextgeneration district energy systems that combine environmental and economic performance.

Vancouver Airport Authority’s CORE program will improve, replace and upgrade aging heating, cooling and electrical infrastructure to meet the Airport’s sustainability targets for Green House Gas emissions reduction and water conservation.

The new thermal energy plant will utilize the largest geo-exchange system in Canada, with up to 1,400 boreholes in full built-out, as its primary source of low-carbon heating and cooling.

The current geo-exchange field of 840 boreholes will provide 3,700 tonnes of GHG emission reduction at completion in 2023.

The CORE Program includes renovations to the existing Terminal Building infrastructure to improve energy efficiency and ready the existing 1.3 millionsquare-foot building to work harmoniously with the new Central Utilities Building.

Better Buildings BC In partnership with the Province of British Columbia, Integral Group Vancouver’s Research and Planning Associate Lisa Westerhoff has launched Better Buildings BC: The Net-Zero Energy-Ready Challenge.

Better Buildings BC is an incentive program and juried competition that provides incentives and support to high-rise residential, workplace, retail, commercial, institutional, and other large complex building projects designed to meet a net-zero energy-ready level of performance.

Buildings that achieve the top step of the BC Energy Step Code, the highest step of the City of Vancouver’s Zero Emissions Building Plan, and Passive House certification are all eligible to apply.

Professional Practice Energy and Sustainability Director Ali Nazari is one of four professionals who authored the Whole Building Energy Modeling Services joint professional practice guidelines.

Published in August 2018 by the Architectural Institute of British Columbia and Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia, the document outlines the professional practices, responsibilities, and quality assurance protocols for projects that use Whole Building Energy Modeling.

Serving as a tool for architects and engineers alike, the guideline establishes procedures surrounding the provision, procurement, and coordination of energy modeling and its related services on all types and sizes of new and existing buildings.

Women in Engineering Integral Group is proud to be a leader and champion of gender equity.

We’re striving for equitable gender representation across our workforce.

Women are an under-represented minority in engineering, and campaigns supporting the growth of this segment in the industry are helping yield positive results.

In 2018 31% of Integral Group’s staff were female - including support and corporate roles.

24% of Integral Group’s technical staff were female - excluding support and corporate roles - an increase from 18% in 2016.

For comparison, the industry average for female technical staff at engineering firms in Canada, USA and Australia is c.10-13%.

As a firm and an industry, our work towards a more equitable workforce is far from done.

Tools for Everyone Radiant Master is the first and only web tool that guides users through the creation of commercial radiant projects.

Developed by Noah Zallen of Integral and funded by client and partner Viega, the tool empowers users to instantly calculate the suitability for both radiant heating and cooling to a specific situation.

It provides professional reports, access to a comprehensive knowledge library, and interactive ‘what-if’ scenarios to optimize designs.

Radiant systems reduce energy use and carbon emissions by using more moderate water temperatures - less energy to make, pumps instead of fans - less energy to move, and the building as a thermal battery - more carbon-friendly timing with the grid, all while enhancing thermal comfort.

Advanced Building Skins The Merck Liquid Crystal Window (LCW) is a dynamic glazing product that utilizes neutral color-rendering and ability to rapidly switch between clear and tinted states.

This technology could increase the efficiency of building façades, helping to decrease the carbon emissions of buildings.

The study, authored by principal David Barker and Merck, compared the Merck LCW with established façade design solutions, such as closed-cavity façade systems, fixed external shading and solar control coatings.

Fire Engineering 2018 saw the launch of one of our newest service offerings Fire Engineering.

Strategic hires joined the Vancouver, Oakland and London offices to drive the growth of this new discipline, and build upon our existing expertise in the design of fire protection systems.

Employing a fire engineered solution can provide an alternative way to achieve at least the same level of safety outlined by building codes, but is specific to the proposed building design.

When developing a fire strategy for a building, our fire engineers develop a tailored solution to suit the needs of the project.

Impact Fund The Impact Fund is Integral Group’s platform for investing in strategic research and development initiatives.

It provides funding to employees for successful research proposals related to zero net energy, water, or waste, urban systems, building technology, data visualization, resilience and adaptation.

The intent of the Impact Fund is to provide employees with a platform to pursue their research interests while insuring we remain on the cutting edge of building science.

The 2018 Impact Fund allocated funds at group and regional levels to projects including.

• Creation of a water tool that enables rapid assessment of pathways to zero net water for projects across North America • Comprehensive review of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) workflows and software platforms that has led to the establishment of best practices in fluid flow simulation • Application of gaming engine technologies to create immersive experiences for reviewing Revit models of our projects

Integral Awards Our annual Awards program celebrates technical excellence and innovation in all forms.

Teams prepare a single board that is judged by independent industry experts with winners announced annually at Greenbuild in the USA. Awards are made in 8 categories: Trust Elevates the role that engineers can plan in tackling the big challenges of the day.

PROJECT:

A multi-phase project, Integral Group firstly developed a Net Zero Buildings Strategy for the Canada Green Building Council. The scope of work included assessing existing terminology associated with Net-Zero Buildings and reaching consensus among various experts and stakeholders as to an appropriate definition of terms for the Canadian context. The outcomes of this exercise were then used to explore the principal building types in Canada and help identify key strategies and performance characteristics of Net Zero Buildings for each one.

Following the development of the renowned framework, Integral Group continued to work with CaGBC to release a full Zero Carbon Building standard for Canada. The process of developing the standard involved additional research and industry consultation, as well as technical analysis. Integral also helped to launch the program in May 2017, and will be working with several pilot projects to apply the standard in 2018.

The Zero Carbon Building Standard assesses the carbon performance of commercial, institutional and multi-family buildings in Canada. The CaGBC Zero Carbon Building Standard provides a pathway for both new and existing buildings to reach zero carbon.

Adopting a highly ambitious, deep green approach to sustainable development, EcoLock Storage Facility will be developed as a 5 storey, 110,000 sq ft selfstorage locker facility which will also include ground and second floor co-working office spaces. Our design ethos was centered around supporting Carbon Capture’s vision of disrupting the self-storage industry by designing a building that would be utilized as a hub for activity and community gathering while promoting sustainable development and design practices; a stark contrast to traditional model of aesthetically unpleasing and unproductive buildings.

The building will incorporate leading edge energy efficiency in design through an envelope-first approach utilizing Just Biofiber blocks to significantly reducing thermal energy for the building and sequestering carbon, while leveraging energy generation on-site through a 150 kW solar photovoltaic array. A 70,000 L below-grade rain water cistern is sized to provide 100% of the project’s irrigation needs: A first for the arid dessert like conditions of the Okanagan and the City of Kelowna.

The project is pursuing the International Living Future’s Petal Certification as a minimum requirement with the intent of meeting the Net Positive Energy Petal, as well as the CaGBC Zero Carbon Pilot Program. By taking an active leadership role within the integrated design team, Integral Group’s Mechanical, Electrical and Energy Modelling services were able to challenge the building and operational norms to deliver a facility that will be utilizing 91% less energy consumption than its counterparts.
