Dear Parents and Carers Welcome to this half term's edition of the new style Nower Hill News - we hope you like the more modern format!
I do hope you will enjoy reading all about what's been going on at Nower Hill over this past half term - it has certainly been a busy one! Enjoy reading about the trips, sporting successes, Duke of Edinburgh expeditions and many other highlights. You can also share some of the fantastic work that our students have produced - I think you will be very impressed.
It has been the most incredibly busy start to the school year and it has been an absolute pleasure to see so many of you in school at our various evening events, the last of which was just yesterday, our wonderful Rewards Ceremony for our students in Years 8 to 11 for their academic achievement last year. It is a joy to me that a good old fashioned certificate and recognition of their consistent effort and achievement, still means so much to our students and their families in this age of instant gratification and materialism - long may it last!
Our young people have worked exceptionally hard over the past 7 weeks and I do hope they will have the opportunity for some rest and relaxation over the holiday. A reminder that we now have a slightly longer October half term, so we look forward to seeing them back at 8.40am on Wednesday 1st November. Last Wednesday, we also enjoyed the Rewards Ceremony for last year's Year 11 students, over 200 of whom are now in our 6th Form. Their achievement, effort and progress was not only recognised by the school, but also in the DfE Performance Tables, which were published yesterday and put Nower Hill's 2023 GCSE results into the very top category of 'Well Above Average'. We always knew that our students were well above average, but it's nice to have it rubber stamped by the DfE!

Nower Hill Open Week 2023
We are delighted to announce our new 6th Form House leadership team, who have been appointed after a rigorous application and interview process. Each Nower Hill House is led by a Year 13 Head of House and two Year 12 House Captains, who will work together to lead their House, inspire their House to victory in the 15 House competitions planned this year, and make key decisions about the overall House system. Congratulations to each of our House Leaders and we look forward to seeing you at House events throughout the year! It was fantastic to welcome a total of 1,355 prospective parents, carers and students to our open mornings last month. Satchel One
We have been delighted with our KS4 Leaders this half term who have really stepped up in their role as Faculty Prefects (Year 10) or KS4 Prefects (Year 11).
Satchel One is asking all parents to verify their email to ensure access. We have been told by some parents they are stuck in a loop when attempting this on their mobile device. As a result we've reached out to Satchel and they have given us this advice.
There have been countless evening functions where students in Year 10 or 11 have assisted staff by welcoming our visitors, serving refreshments and providing general support to families. In addition to this, we were blown away by their professionalism and work ethic during Open Week – they are a credit to the school and visitors commented many times on how impressed they were with the student guides who showed them around the school.

Last Wednesday we celebrated with students in our ex Year 11 cohort who returned to school after being nominated for an award by one of their subject teachers or pastoral leaders. All students who joined us on the evening were congratulated for their determination, commitment to success and overall excellence last year; the evening was a memorable occasion shared alongside their families. A fantastic achievement and well done to everyone involved!

NOWER HILL NEWS Black History Month Assemblies
As part of their assemblies last week to celebrate Black History month, students have been presented with 2 images of world maps. The first image is the Mercator projection map used for navigation and is the map our students will be most familiar with today. In contrast, Peter’s projection map illustrates the actual size of land mass per country and in particular shows the true size of Africa. When comparing these maps, students have been asked to consider the importance of Africa and reconsider perceptions of how countries have been presented.
Students were also shown photos from the British Museum to understand and recognise the rich cultural heritage of Africa, and particularly looked at the Benin Bronzes and statues of Pharaohs from the Egyptian era. All of these images and quotes are from a trip our current Year 10 students attended, when exploring a project on Africa before the transatlantic slave trade.

TRIP NEWS Year 11 Citizenship Parliament trip
A Level Physics CERN Trip A group of 29 Year 13 Physics students returned from 3 days in Geneva, Switzerland on Tuesday 12th September, where they were visiting the European Council for Nuclear Research (CERN).
The students were given a tour of the facilities, taking in particle accelerators used in ground breaking Physics research, as well as the vast data centre.
On Monday 11th September, 49 students from Year 11 GCSE Citizenship went to the UK Parliament for a workshop and tour of Westminster palace. The students were thrilled to walk through the chambers of the House of Commons and House of Lords. They also got the chance to stand in the Robing room, which the Monarch uses for the State Opening of Parliament. The trip helped students revisit key themes relevant to their GCSE examination and they impressed the parliament staff with their knowledge! Ms Issa
The research carried out at CERN seeks to answer some of the biggest remaining questions to understand the Universe and overlaps with the Particle Physics topic learnt by our students at the end of Year 12. As well as a boat trip and treasure hunt to discover more of the city, the students also visited the United Nations Geneva HQ. Here, they were lucky enough to be able to listen in to the Human Rights Council, which was in session discussing ongoing global human rights concerns. Mr Meunier 05

DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD NEWS Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award Enrolment 2023

We also wanted to share some of the students' reflections on completion - we hope that this might inspire our prospective Year 12s who have completed the Bronze award to sign up.
The Duke of Edinburgh award is a nationally and internationally recognised and respected award. Benefits to completing it include: supporting CVs, and powerful in interviews; supports university/college applications; builds on employability skills and provides growth and achievement opportunities. We are currently open for Year 10 student enrolment to the Bronze level of the award scheme as mentioned in student assemblies and the Year Ahead meeting. The enrolment closing date is Friday 3rd November (a Google Form has been sent out) and ParentPay closes for the enrolment fee (£50) on Friday 3rd November. Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award Expedition in the New Forest

We are so proud of our Year 12 Silver Award cohort twenty nine students braved the weather in October to complete their Silver Qualifying Expedition in the New Forest. The team's challenge consisted of planning and executing their routes between two different campsites over three days. In that time, they were totally self-sufficient, carrying all of their kit and cooking their planned meals. The group were supervised by the DofE team - Mr Blain, Ms Tomlinson, Mr Webster and Ms Serrao and all staff were very impressed with this cohort’s resilience, particularly when the temperatures reached -1 on Sunday morning! It was also fantastic to hear the students embodying the Nower Hill way expressing their gratitude to the staff that facilitated their expedition on our return. The final step to pass the expedition section is for the groups to prepare a presentation on their aim - these ranged from evaluating team performance at each checkpoint to monitoring the biodiversity in the New 06

YEAR 9 Year 9 TFL Safeguarding talks On Tuesday 19th September 2023, our Year 9 students had a talk from Transport for London representatives on sexual harassment on public transport. During the session, students looked at the different types of sexual harassment that could occur on public transport. From the statistics shared, students were reminded that this could happen to male and females, and the perpetrators are not always males. PC Mark Beharry, who has worked with the school extensively, discussed the importance of our young people always tapping in with their Zip card when they begin a journey. This way their journey can be tracked and if there was ever an issue, TfL and the Police can easily identify the bus or train they had boarded.
We were surprised to learn that CCTV on buses is only kept for 10 days, so please do discuss the above with your children, as it is important that they are always being alert and aware when taking public transport, and reporting any issues immediately. The Railway Guardian app was recommended by the team. The app allows young people to share their journeys with trusted contacts. The app also allows users to report any crime and works in real time, so officers can be deployed immediately depending on the report. Mr Suthesh

6th FORM NEWS Level 3 Extended Project Qualification Presentations The main hall was brought to life once more with Year 13 EPQ presentations on the afternoon of 21st September 2023. It was fantastic to see such a wonderful array of topics being discussed around the room and the pride on the students' faces as they delivered their presentations to a live audience was so lovely to see. Their peers along with staff, parents/carers and governors left the hall truly inspired. Well done to all EPQ students; we are very proud of you all. Miss Cullum
SSL Committee Bazaar There are a number of different committees that our 6th Form students can join including: Sports & Leisure; Equality & Diversity; Environment; Wellbeing; Charity; Social & Prom; Volunteering and mentoring. Our Senior Leaders organised a lunchtime session to recruit new members and promote their ideas for the forthcoming year. GEOGRAPHY NEWS Geography entries to Royal Geographical Society competition 2023 In the Summer Term last year, all Year 8 Geography students created a piece of work for the RGS Young Geographer of the Year competition on the theme 'Blueprint for the Future'. Students had to choose two environmental issues and come up with creative solutions for them. Students' ideas ranged from a biomass robot to insect farms to solar panel cars! We have now submitted 8 entries to RGS from Nower Hill. Congratulations to Ayden 9NH, Zusanna 9FH, Mark 9BN, Aimee 9KH, Ayaan 9SH, Rayaan 9KN and Rian 9FH and well done to the whole year group for their hard work, creativity and innovation shown in their ideas. SPORTS FIXTURES Year 8 Netball
Year 9 Netball continued
Congratulations to the Year 8 Netball team, who have played three matches over the span of this week and last week and won every game. On Wednesday 4th October, their first match of Year 8 was against Hatch End High, away, which they won 30-5. It was a great game showing real teamwork and effort, starting off their winning streak on a high. Last Wednesday they played Whitmore and won 23 - 1 at home. It was a fantastic game and they really put Whitmore through their paces with amazing defence and shooting.
There was no rest for the team with their next game being played on Thursday 5th October against a strong Whitmore side. The teams were matching each other goal for goal right up until the final whistle, where Nower Hill were able to get one more goal past them to win 8-7. On Tuesday 10th October the team faced their next opponents in Rooks Heath. The girls displayed fantastic teamwork and continued their winning streak with a 20-0 victory! Congratulations to the following students: Nicole Alvarez, Hannah Nagra-Hoyle, Shiann McCallum, Anjela Lulbaddha, Monique Chumber, Wren Whiting, Jonelle Odika, Anaya Dharmaraja, Zyon Baugh-Russell, Cara Samuels, Eva-Rae Laylor and Nikki Lotay.
Lastly, they played Rooks Heath and unfortunately, Rooks Heath did not bring the age appropriate team and brought a year up, which resulted in us taking the automatic win. The year 8s still played Rooks Heath Year 9 team and beat the team 26-0! Congratulations to: Sophie, Amelie, Kaya, Leah, Mei, Neha, Anna, Isla, Melody, Ayaana & Francesca pictured below.
Year 11 Netball On Wednesday 27th September the Year 11 Netball team took part in their final tournament representing Nower Hill. This was an opportunity for the girls to prepare themselves for the upcoming season, as well as to enjoy their final tournament. The girls where in a tough group for the tournament and faced strong opposition from Park High in their opening game. Next followed a tightly fought contest against Sacred Heart. The girls then went onto face a strong physical challenge from Rooks Heath, before overcoming them in the final quarter to win this game. Unfortunately our performance was not enough to see us through to the semi-finals, but gave us lots to work on in preparation for the season opener of the league later in the term.
Year 9 Netball On Wednesday 4th October, the Year 9 Netball Team opened their season with a local derby against Hatch End High. The girls started the game strong and kept to their game plan. Demonstrating their range of passing and shooting skills, the girls were able to open their season with a 17-3 win.

The U15 team kicked off the season with a Middlesex Cup draw against Ruislip High, after just a few weeks of training. The score line was 1-1 at half time after a great goal from Elsie, and with Cara Samuels and Katie Lewis proving to be a real threat against the opposition. After some fantastic saves from our Goalkeeper Avni, keeping us in the game on many occasions, we unfortunately ended up losing 3-1. Well done to all the girls who played.
The U16 Girls Football team started the season with a Harrow League fixture against Pinner High. An evenly matched first half left us at 0-0, but with pressure from Pinner to score, and some great tackles and clearances from Anaya Johnson.

On Tuesday 10th October, Brett, Agastya, Zayaan, Hridhaan, Chin and Aminah, shown in the photo below, went to Avanti house to take part in the U16’s Badminton ranking tournament. We played against North London Collegiate School, Bentley Wood and Avanti House. The tournament consisted of playing in doubles and Nower Hill did amazingly, which led us to 1st place. There was great teamwork and support from those watching and on court while playing. A massive well done to Hridhaan and Brett for supporting and encouraging the younger players while playing.
We took two teams to the qualifying tournament this year to see what group we would get seeded into. After several strong performances from both teams, they met each other in the semi-final. The “A” team won convincingly, 5-1, to setup a final against Park High A team, but unfortunately losing 5-1 and finishing 2nd in the tournament. The “B” team came 4th, after losing to Avanti House in the 3rd place play-off.
Pinner managed to score in the second half ending the game 1-0, but with 3 of our core players unavailable, the team should be very proud to have only conceded one goal. Our player of the match was Katie Lewis.
Under 16 Table Tennis We took two teams to the qualifying tournament this year to see what group we would get seeded into and after several strong performances from both teams, they met each other in the semi-final. The “A” team won which set up a final against Park High A team. After a hard fought game, the A team came out victorious to claim 1st place. The B team won the third place play-off to finish 3rd overall. Two strong teams that will be battling it out for the Borough title this year!

On Thursday September 28th, the Year 7 football team proudly represented Nower Hill in their inaugural tournament of the year. The Nower Hill A team exhibited an outstanding performance throughout the group stage, clinching the top spot without a single loss and securing a coveted place in the semi-finals.
The Year 9 boys Football team produced a stunning overall team performance to beat Salvatorian College 9-2 in their first league fixture last Monday. With the score being deadlock at 1-1 fifteen minutes into the game, the boys upped the intensity to be 4-1 up at half time, with Nicklas Sutherland bagging two of the goals.
In contrast, the Nower Hill B team, despite their commendable efforts, finished third in the group, narrowly missing out on a semi-finals match.
In the second half, the boys continued where they left off, by scoring another 5 goals, with Nicklas completing his hat trick. Abdou Al Nemangham, was trying to complete a hat trick too in the second half. After a considered amount of effort he didn’t manage to do so, but scoring two was still fantastic. There were a few other players who scored a goal too!
The semi-final clash saw Nower Hill A team pitted against Pinner High A team. Thanks to an exceptional goal by Xavier, Nower Hill A emerged triumphant with a 1-0 victory, earning themselves a well-deserved spot in the final. In a tightly contested final, Salvatorian college narrowly bested our team in a penalty shootout. Both Nower Hill A and B did an excellent job and we are looking forward to the next tournament.
Overall a brilliant result and the boys most importantly represented themselves and the school impeccably.

6th Form Boys’ Football
The Year 8 Boys’ Football team have progressed from the group stages, beating Whitefriars 11-1 in the first game. Goal scorers were Khalil Chung x 3, Leo Duggan x 2, Shay Kothary x 2, Thomas Morris, Ariyan Patel, Leighton Thomas, Arjan Tankaria. Player of the match was Khalil Chung.
The 6th Form team won their opening game of the Brigg Cup competition against Whitmore 3-2, thanks to a Ryan Ford header in the last 2 minutes. This stands us in good stead going into the remaining group games against JFS and St John’s Catholic school.
In the second match we lost to a strong John Lyon team 5-3, but showed that we can be more than competitive against good opposition. The goal scorers were Raul Purohit, Leo Duggan and Khalil Chung. Player of the match was Raul Purohit.

ARTS Year 11 Stage-Ed Blood Brothers Workshop
Macbeth Our Year 10 students watched an excellent performance of ‘Macbeth’ by The Globe Players who visited the school on Monday 18th September. The company gave a captivating performance that absorbed the attention of students and their English teachers. As well as breaking character to discuss scenes, the performance was followed by a question and answer session on subjects ranging from ‘What are the best tips for remembering quotations?’ to ‘What characters would you explore if writing an essay on supernatural?’ The performance was thoroughly enjoyable, and served as live exam preparation for our students. Many students fed back to their teachers that they were able to recall lines from the play and also how it aided their understanding of key themes, proving how beneficial the experience was.
On Thursday 12th October, Year 11 GCSE Drama students took part in a workshop focusing on the play Blood Brothers by Willy Russell, which is the play the students study for part of their written exam. The workshop was led by Stage-Ed. Stage-Ed is a company that was formed by two Actors who held lead roles in the West End production of Blood Brothers, so they have extensive knowledge and experience of the play! The Year 11 students thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and it was a fantastic way of giving them a practical experience of the play they will be writing about for their GCSE exam.

OTHER NEWS Law Society Talks - Dean of Law & Criminology Last week, Nower Hill High School’s Law Society launched its first talk by an external speaker in a series of events to be held throughout the academic year. With a warm welcome, we invited Bill Davies; former commercial lawyer and current Dean of Law and Criminology at University of Winchester, to speak with students about what it is like to study Law or a Criminology-based degree. He answered our students’ questions skilfully and gave them tips on how to make their university applications stand out. Bill taught our students how to start mooting (formal mock trial competitions) and the terminology that must be used by Barristers when referring to a Crown Court Judge (‘Your Honour’) or other Barristers (‘my learned friend’). Students were captivated and thoroughly enjoyed being ‘wigged and robed’. We look forward to hosting Judge Judy Khan and Magistrate Gary Langley in November. Miss A Azam
Debate Mate Workshop This term, students from across the school in Years 7 - 12 participated in a formal debate workshop run by Debate Mate in preparation for the NHHS Debating Society. During this our students impressed staff, the event organiser and each other, by displaying their oracy skills and working as a team. In one round, our students showed off their creative and critical thinking skills by competing against each other to persuade their audience who should be thrown out of a hot air balloon! Many of the debate activities honed in on student confidence, resilience, empathy and emotional capacity. This was especially highlighted during closing debates, where students worked together across all Year groups to analyse the statement ‘this House believes that teachers should also be subject to uniforms in school’. It provided for some fun, heated and thought-provoking conversation. Miss A Azam 16

Nower Hill Law Society
The leaves are falling off the trees; it's getting darker and colder now halfterm is here. This is an opportunity for everyone to read a book from the library.
The Nower Hill Law Society returns this academic year for Years 8 to 13 with a mixture of film/TV screenings, expert talks and debates on the agenda.
To make this easy, we have extended our return time for books that have been borrowed over the half-term period. Students can also borrow eBooks. If they go onto the Student G-Suite and scroll down to the VLeBooks sign, click on it and follow the instructions to choose an e-book for free.
Students will be exposed to a range of opportunities that will boost their cultural capital and there will be top tips available for those interested in applying for a legal career. Students are welcome to bring their lunch with them and engage their advocacy or problemsolving skills. A sign up sheet will be available for expert talks by external speakers. Miss A Azam

CHARITY NEWS Fundraising for Nower Hill A message from Naomi Larner - Fundraising for Nower Hill As part of my half century celebrations (delayed by a pandemic!) I am running the New York City Marathon on November 5th 2023️ and as I run past Nower Hill School on my training runs, I have chosen to raise funds to help build their new Drama theatre. I am lucky enough to work at Harrow Fire Station as part of the Babcock training team training firefighters, so in addition I am supporting my employer Babcock's core principle of collaboration with communities surrounding our training centres. So if you see a lady with purple hair running past you in the morning, please feel free to say hello or give me a high five! Macmillian Coffee Morning Thank you to all the staff for supporting this year's Macmillian coffee morning on the Inset day in October. We have raised over £315 for the charity. Macmillan Cancer Support is one of the largest British charities and provides specialist health care, information and financial support to people affected by cancer. ONLINE SAFETY End-to-End Encryption Encryption is the method of scrambling data into a secret code that hides the information's true meaning. Previously used by spies, large, international organisations and those seeking to exist beyond the realms of the law, this feature is . unfortunately now being introduced by many social media platforms/apps to enhance the privacy for their users. Whilst you may have seen the use of End-to-End Encryption (E2EE) being used on messaging apps like WhatsApp over the last few years, we are now seeing various other social media and messaging apps like Instagram introduce this feature to their platforms. The use of End-to-End Encryption poses a huge risk to young people, with the potential for users to screen shot/capture private images and messages and then share these private images and messages, without other people knowing, often with very little risk of detection. Live Streaming & Messaging Apps Does your child use livestreaming and messaging apps like Instagram or WhatsApp? These popular apps allow young people to connect, share and communicate with friends and family, in real time, over the internet. Whilst apps like WhatsApp appear harmless on the surface, WhatsApp is probably the application that young people across the world misuse the most. VAPING & PHYCICAL HEALTH FOR STUDENTS Launch of Youth Smoking and Vaping Consultation Next half term, all students will have an extended registration session where we will proactively teach the risks of vaping, alongside healthy eating. However, families may wish to also become involved and have their say regarding smoking and vaping in youth culture, and exploring some of the proposals being consulted upon, which include: • making it an offence for anyone born on or after 1 January 2009 to be sold tobacco products • restricting the flavours and descriptions of vapes so that vape flavours are no longer targeted at children – we want to ensure this is done in a way that continues to support adult smokers to switch • regulating point of sale displays in retail outlets so that vapes are kept out of sight from children and away from products that appeal to them, such as sweets • regulating vape packaging and product presentation, ensuring that neither the device nor its packaging is targeted to children • considering restricting the sale of disposable vapes, which are clearly linked to the rise in vaping in children. These products are not only attractive to children but also incredibly harmful to the environment • exploring further restrictions for non-nicotine vapes and other nicotine consumer products such as nicotine pouches • exploring whether increasing the price of vapes will reduce the number of young people using them • introducing new powers for local authorities to issue on-the-spot fines (fixed penalty notices) to enforce age of sale legislation of tobacco products and vapes
The London Tobacco Alliance and Stop Smoking London has welcomed the launch of a UK-wide Government consultation to stop the start of new smokers and address youth vaping which launched on 12 October. Read their response here.
Teenagers, parents, teachers, medical professionals, academic experts and others have 8 weeks to submit views on government plans and to share experiences. The London Tobacco Alliance is encouraging all of its partners to read the consultation and to respond before it closes on 6 December 2023.

BRILLIANT PARENTS Each month ‘Brilliant Parents’ offer free discussion groups on commonly encountered problems by parents. Parents are given tips and suggestions for dealing with their children’s challenging behaviour, looking at short video clips and sharing their thoughts with other parents. Parents and Carers are actively involved throughout the 2-hour small group format discussions. The PTFA has a long history of working alongside the school community and raises money for additional resources for the students. The PTFA Quiz and Supper Night, will take place on Saturday 18th November 2023 and is always popular with the school’s families and friends from the local area. We warmly welcome all adults that are part of the Nower Hill community to make their own team of up to 10 people, or let the PTFA find a table for you to join.
