Life After Nower Hill Week
Year 12 students had an amazing week listening to university representatives, apprenticeship providers, employers and alumni talk about the range of opportunities available to students once they leave school and how best to prepare for interviews.
Students began writing their personal statements for university and some students went on an interesting trip to Royal Holloway, University of London, while others heard from university representatives in school.
On Thursday of that week students had the opportunity to practice being interviewed by an employer and to
receive feedback on their CV and interview.
They also learned about degree apprenticeships from alumni who are now apprentices and met with other alumni who were keen to share their careers journeys since leaving school and to answer students' questions All in all it was a very inspiring and enjoyable week.
Thank you to all our employers, apprentices, university representatives and alumni who came to talk to our students

Outstanding Success at the International Space Competition
We are incredibly proud to celebrate the fantastic achievement of one of our brilliant students, Myan Doshi, who recently took second place in a prestigious international space competition.
The challenge was truly out of this world, designing a space station orbiting Mars that will serve as humanity’s critical link between Earth, the Moon and a future Martian habitat. This required an immense amount of dedication, including producing a comprehensive research project detailing his design and the inspiration behind his choices. Additionally, he created an engaging 5 minute video presence to pitch his ideas to the judges.
His exceptional hard work, resilience, and creativity paid off, earning an amazing scholarship to a summer school at the University of Oxford.
A massive well done from all of us, what an incredible achievement!

Year 8 Natural History Museum Trip
From 13th May - 8th July, our Year 8 students went on educational trips to the Natural History Museum, where they participated in an interactive workshop about space exploration. During the session, students worked in small teams to design and build LEGO Martian rovers They coded, tested, and analysed their designs before launching them on a Martian surface. This experience allowed students to understand the importance of space exploration and the role museum scientists play in this field They also learnt how using models such as LEGO is essential for engineers when developing real world solutions.
Thank you to everyone who helped organise and accompany the students on this memorable trip. It would not have been possible without your support

Computing Faculties Murder Mystery Competition
Students put their codebreaking skills to the test in the Computing Faculty's recent Murder Mystery Competition. Teams were challenged to solve the mysterious murder of Mr Sammy by decoding a series of increasingly difficult ciphers and encrypted clues.
Using their logical thinking, teamwork and cryptography skills, competitors worked to uncover three key pieces of information: who murdered Mr Sammy, where the crime took place, and what weapon was used The race was on as teams battled against the clock to crack the codes and solve the case before their rivals
After carefully piecing together the evidence, teams discovered that the murderer was Mr Suthesh Only those who successfully decoded all of the clues were able to reveal the full solution to the mystery
The three fastest teams to correctly solve the case were crowned our winners As a reward for their impressive detective work, each winning team received either a wireless computer mouse or a novelty USB stick.
Congratulations to all students who took part. The competition showcased excellent problem-solving skills, perseverance and teamwork, and we look forward to hosting more Computing challenges in the future.

Celebrating 70 Years of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
This year marks a very special milestone as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) celebrates its 70th anniversary For seven decades the internationally recognised Award has inspired millions of young people to step outside their comfort zones, develop new skills, and achieve more than they ever thought possible.
Here at Nower Hill High School, we are proud to be part of this incredible legacy. In fact, Sir Roger Bannister, best known as the first person to run a sub-four-minute mile and one of our school house namesakes, was a dedicated supporter of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award He served as Chair of the Award from 1977 to 1983 helping to inspire generations of young people to challenge themselves and achieve their full potential
This year is particularly exciting as we celebrate another important milestone - our very first group of students embarking on the Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award Reaching Gold is a significant achievement, requiring dedication, perseverance, and commitment over an extended period. Each year, only around 6,000–7,000 young people across the whole of the UK achieve a Gold Award, making it a truly outstanding accomplishment We are delighted to offer this opportunity and look forward to supporting our students as they work towards completing the highest level of the Award.
The DofE continues to have a positive impact on our school community. Our students have volunteered countless hours supporting local organisations and our own extra curricular clubs, developed new talents and hobbies, challenged themselves physically, and created
lasting memories during their expeditions. These experiences not only build lifelong friendships but also equip our students with valuable skills that will benefit them throughout their education and future careers.
None of this would be possible without the dedication of our DofE staff, volunteers, parents, carers, and expedition leaders, whose encouragement and support enable our students to succeed. We are incredibly grateful for their commitment to making the programme such a rewarding experience
On that note, I would like to ask for your support. If you have any hiking boots, sleeping bags or waterproof clothing in good condition that you no longer require, please consider donating them to our DofE equipment store. Your generosity will help support future generations of Nower Hill High School students as they embark on their own DofE journeys
As the Duke of Edinburgh's Award celebrates 70 years of transforming young lives, we are proud to continue its tradition here at Nower Hill High School. We congratulate all of our current participants, as well as everyone who has completed their DofE Award with us over the years.
Here's to celebrating 70 years of adventure, service, personal growth, and achievement and to many more years of inspiring our students to discover just how much they can accomplish.

Year 7 Globe Players Visit
Tuesday 30th June 2026
On Tuesday, 30th June, our Year 7 students enjoyed a lively performance of ‘What You Will’ by the fantastic Globe Players.
The performance introduced students to Shakespeare through a selection of his most famous scenes, with extracts from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Twelfth Night, The Tempest, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, and more brought to life with energy and humour
Our Year 7 students were thoroughly entertained and in fits of laughter as the talented cast brought Shakespeare’s iconic characters to the stage. The performance was made even more memorable by some brilliant cameo appearances from our very own Nower Hill students!
Having nearly completed their study of Much Ado About Nothing, the performance was a fantastic way for Year 7 to celebrate their learning and see Shakespeare brought vividly to life

Year 8 World War 1 Battlefields Trip
13th & 14th June 2026
Over the weekend of the 13th and 14th of June, forty-six Year 8 students and 5 members of staff travelled to the World War 1 battlefields in France and Belgium
This was an opportunity for students to physically see the places that they had been learning about in History, and to gain a deeper, more personal understanding of the sacrifices made by those who died in the War. The weekend included visits to various cemeteries, trenches, battlefield sites, and memorials. One of the highlights for the students was undoubtedly stocking up at the Belgian chocolate shop in Ypres! The students seemed to really enjoy the experience and engaged really thoughtfully at all of the sites.
We were also incredibly lucky to have been asked to lay a wreath at the moving Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate Sophia (8FH) and Kian (8GN) laid the wreath on behalf of the entire Nower Hill community, and were exceptional ambassadors for the school - they received many positive comments from veterans and members of the public about how smart and confident they looked.
One of the students said: “this trip was the highlight of my year and it was so cool to see all the places we looked at in class. We also got to reflect on how many people sacrificed their lives for the freedom we have now. Thank you to Mr Kilroy, Mr McDyre, Mr Sohel, Miss Zaabar and Miss Koomson for giving up their weekend to take us!”.

Gaelic football All-Britain competition
On Thursday 2nd July, we had 3 teams make Nower Hill history as our first teams to compete in the Gaelic Football All-Britain competition in Sudbury-on-Thames.
Students have trained very hard this term for the competition, with the majority of students having never played Gaelic football before.
All 3 of our teams faced very competitive leagues against schools entering from all over Britain Our Year 7 boys were in the plate quarter-final, very narrowly
conceding a goal in the last minute to be knocked out at 3-2. The Year 9 boys also got knocked out in the quarter-final, but both of these teams played up an age category and their resilience was a credit to them.
Our Year 7 and 8 girls team put in a great team performance and made it to the Shield final, winning 15-4! All students had a fantastic day and they should be very proud of all their hard work to get this far

Spotlight on staff professional development: From Mexico to Japan
By Lil Weetch
Walking across Hayle Beach in Cornwall, I realised I had never seen it in the September light Normally, I would already be back in the classroom teaching GCSE and A Level students Instead, I found myself caught between fierce winds, heavy rain, bursts of sunshine and sudden darkness. That ever-changing landscape marked the beginning of my sabbatical and the return to my own art practice.
I spent hours knee-deep in rock pools with my camera, completely absorbed by what I was seeing. Afterwards, soaked through, I drove to the nearest coffee shop to upload and review the photographs Looking through them, I felt something I hadn't experienced for a long time: the excitement of reconnecting with my own creativity For many years, I had happily poured that creative energy into the thousands of students I have taught This was the first time in a long while that I was making space for my own artistic voice.
I had just under a year to make the most of my sabbatical. I knew I wanted to travel to places I had never visited, deepen my understanding of art, experience different cultures and immerse myself in new landscapes. The photographs I made while driving from Penzance to Exmoor became the foundation of an application for an art residency in Mexico City To my joy, I was invited for an interview, where I spoke about my practice
At the heart of my work is the idea of using landscape to poetically explore the human condition I see strong parallels between the way landscapes are shaped over time by weather, erosion and change, and the way we, as people, are continually shaped by our experiences. We harden and soften, evolve and adapt, influenced by turbulence, environment and moments of calm.
A few weeks later, I received the news that I had been accepted. It was something I had never imagined possible, but applying taught me the importance of being brave enough to try. Suddenly, my journey to Mexico had a clear purpose I lived in a beautiful house just south of Mexico City alongside five other artists from America, Spain, Lithuania and France My bedroom was on the top floor, and every morning I simply walked downstairs into a large shared studio My routine became beautifully simple: coffee, studio clothes and straight to my workspace beside a window overlooking a lush garden.
For five weeks I experimented, wrote and made art every day. The residency gave me opportunities I never would have experienced otherwise: one-to-one mentoring with a renowned Mexican art critic, group critiques, gallery visits, conversations with practising artists and, perhaps most importantly, uninterrupted time to focus entirely on making work Researching local history, ancient mythology and the surrounding landscape became an endless source of inspiration
By the end of the residency, I had developed a new body of work titled Microscapes. During the final exhibition, attended by over 100 people, I presented my work and spoke publicly about my practice. I was subsequently invited to exhibit again in Mexico and to participate in an art fair. The encouragement and generosity of the artistic community there was incredibly validating and gave me the confidence to believe that this path was possible
Once the residency had finished, I continued travelling through Mexico, making lifelong friendships and building new artistic connections One particular highlight was spending time with a family in San Cristóbal de las Casas, where I helped renovate part of their home and supported them in developing their business into an Airbnb, while also learning Spanish and experiencing daily family life. From there I travelled to Namibia, where I completed a two-week road trip with close friends through some of the most breathtaking landscapes I have ever seen India followed, where I visited the Kochi Biennale and spent time with friends in Bengaluru, before continuing to Japan
While flying from India to Japan, I was anxiously waiting to hear back about another residency application, this time on the southern island of Kyushu As soon as I landed in Tokyo and connected to the airport Wi-Fi, I opened my emails to find I had been accepted The work I had produced in Mexico, alongside a letter of recommendation from the residency, had given me the confidence to apply for new opportunities. My cousin, who lives in Tokyo, had been expecting me to stay with him for several months, so I had to apologise and explain that I would be leaving for Kyushu the very next day!
After three train journeys, I arrived in Takeo Onsen, a peaceful town surrounded by green hills, ancient trees and wonderful cafés For another five weeks I lived in a traditional Japanese house with four artists from Korea, Canada, America and Mexico Each morning I cycled through quiet streets to my studio, a journey that became one of my favourite parts of the day
During this residency I created a new body of work titled Face Forward Working with traditional Japanese washi paper and handmade canvas, I combined visual work with poetry while researching local history, ceremony and mythology, particularly the ways nature is woven into Japanese cultural traditions. Following the residency, I spent several weeks in Kirishima National Park, fully immersed in forests, volcanic landscapes and nature before returning to England.
Looking back, this year has given me far more than I could have imagined It has strengthened my confidence, challenged me creatively and expanded my understanding of contemporary art practice It has also enriched the subject knowledge and experiences that I can now bring back into the classroom
The journey has not ended there. I am currently planning an exhibition for October, and I have already shared my experiences with the HCA Art group, speaking about art residencies and the importance of nurturing your own creative practice.
One exciting outcome is that next summer we will be holding a teachers' art exhibition at Harrow Arts Centre I hope many of you will be able to come along, and I look forward to sharing the work with you

The Great British Scheme
Attraction Finder
Rising prices can make life's little treats harder to afford, especially during the school holidays when costs build up for families This Government is determined to help, and that is why last month the Chancellor announced the Great British Summer Savings scheme
From 25 June to 1 September 2026, the Government is temporarily cutting VAT from 20% to 5% on children's meals in restaurants, children and family tickets to cinemas, theatres, concerts and exhibitions, and admission to a wide range of attractions. Combined with free bus travel during August for children aged 5 to 15 in England, families and young people will be able to enjoy experiences that make summer special, including visits to the kinds of cultural and educational attractions that enrich children's lives outside the classroom.
This forms part of a broader effort by the Government to ease financial pressures on families. From ending the twochild limit and expanding free school meals, to rolling out free breakfast clubs and delivering 30 hours of free childcare, this Government is taking action to put more money back into parents’ pockets and give every child the best possible start in life
As part of this campaign, an attraction finder website has been launched, which allows families to type in their postcode and find participating venues near them to make the most of summer savings. To use the attraction finder, please visit https://summersavings.gov.uk
Businesses can find out more about the VAT reduction by visiting GOV.UK and searching 'Temporary reduced rate of VAT for family attractions'.
