As we come to the end of another successful half term, I am delighted to share with you this latest edition of Nower Hill News. It has been a term filled with achievement, opportunity and celebration, and I am incredibly proud of all that our students and staff have accomplished.
One of the most significant articles for me in Nower Hill news this half term is my opportunity to share our new school vision and values with you These have been shaped through a year-long consultation with staff, students, parents, carers and governors, and they truly reflect the collective aspirations of our whole community I am excited about the clarity and direction they provide for the future of Nower Hill, and confident that they capture both who we are and who we strive to be, a community where ambition is encouraged, commitment is recognised, creativity is nurtured, and every individual is treated with fairness and kindness.
Our examination year groups continue to demonstrate resilience and determination. Students in Years 11 and 13 have now received their mock examination results, and we are very proud of the maturity and focus they have shown. These milestones provide important stepping stones towards the summer examinations, and it has been encouraging to see students responding thoughtfully to feedback and striving to improve further
This half term also brought welcome external recognition of the exceptional outcomes our students achieve We were
praised for our excellent examination results by the Secretary of State for Education and are currently ranked in the top 7% of schools nationally for GCSE attainment This is a testament to the hard work of our students, the expertise and dedication of our staff, and the invaluable support of families at home.
Beyond the classroom, this edition highlights a wealth of enrichment opportunities and successes. From award winners to sporting achievements and a wide range of curriculum experiences, our students continue to embrace opportunities with enthusiasm and confidence. 6th Form Culture Day was once again a powerful and joyful celebration of the diversity that makes our school community so special. Events such as this reinforce the importance of inclusion, understanding and mutual respect
We are also incredibly proud of our Year 13 students, many of whom are already receiving offers from universities and apprenticeship providers Their success reflects years of sustained effort and aspiration, and we look forward to supporting them as they take their next exciting steps.

This year marks an important moment for our school community as we launch a renewed vision and set of values for Nower Hill
Our previous vision and values were established in 2013. Since then, much has changed, in the world around us, in education, and within our own school. Nower Hill today is a vibrant, evolving community, and it was important that our vision and values truly reflect who we are now, what we believe in, and what we aspire to become.
Over the past year, we have undertaken an extensive and genuinely collaborative consultation process We have listened carefully to voices from across our community: through two staff engagement events, a parent survey shared with all families, an additional inperson consultation with a focus group of Year 9 parents at the Year Ahead Evening, a full consultation with the Student Council, further discussions with our Head Students and Senior Student Leaders, and ongoing, thoughtful collaboration with our Governors. This breadth of engagement has been invaluable and has ensured that the outcomes are rooted in shared understanding and collective ambition.
The values that have emerged from this process reflect the behaviours we believe matter most at Nower Hill, the way we treat one another, the standards we uphold, and the attitudes that drive our continued success They are not abstract ideals, but principles shaped by our lived experience as a school community
Our renewed vision captures our belief that a Nower Hill education is both a gateway and a catalyst It secures strong foundations for success while also expanding horizons enabling our students to see more, aspire higher, and become more than they may once have imagined. We have summed this up in one simple but powerful line:

This phrase speaks to opportunity for all, empowerment and hope, and to our commitment to equipping every student with the knowledge, skills, confidence and character to shape their own future.
Over the coming term, you will begin to see this vision and our values embedded across school life: on our website, within school communications, and throughout our daily work I will also be launching the vision and values with students after the half-term break, ensuring they understand not just the words, but the meaning behind them and the role they play in bringing them to life.

We are really pleased to see that the school is renewing the vision and values I think it is important because it is adapting to what our community is now compared to what it was before. The new vision and values really encompasses what we as students really think is important. It has been reorganised to be a more modern and present expression of what and who we are.
I think the new focus on creativity is a really important value to have This doesn't need to necessarily mean subjects that we would traditionally think of as 'creative' like art, but it is about the way that we think
I also really like the focus on possibilities because there are so many options especially as you are leaving school. It is great to see that this is something that the school encourages so that we as students can explore
what is best for us rather than stay on one binary path. It has been a really big privilege and responsibility to be involved in the consultation. This is a really important change and to make sure that the senior student leaders were involved, and the student leaders last year too It felt inclusive of us and means that it isn't something that only the Headteacher thinks It has been important to hear that staff and parents have been involved too.
I am leaving the school at the end of this year, but these changes will stay. This is a really positive legacy to leave behind to know that there will be work in place for the betterment of everyone when we leave. It is a new modern direction for our school. Future generations of Nower Hill students will really benefit from this change

We’re excited to announce the first ever Nower Hill House Charity Week! Join in the fun by taking part in a range of fundraising activities planned by our 6th Form and raise money for our fantastic House Charities. Students can take part in carnival games, a Mothers’ Day pop-up shop, penalty shootouts and a keepy-uppy challenge, table tennis tournaments and bake sales!

Nower Hill School Council
120 members of the Nower Hill School Council have continued give their feedback on key issues affecting the school. This term they had an exclusive early look at the newly proposed Nower Hill School Values, which they have helped to shape over the last year.
The School Council also shared its feedback on the results of our whole-school survey and identified areas of the school and times of the day that the school could get even better. This led to our trial of a new one-way system and we’ll be working with the School Council throughout the year to make further improvements to this

Leader Award Winner
We are delighted to announce that Nower Hill High School has nominated Mr Blain for the Jack Petchey Foundation Leader Award for his dedication in leading the school’s first ever cohort through the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. Jack Petchey Foundation Leader Awards recognise the incredible commitment of adults who go above and beyond at the schools and youth organisations they support and who exemplify dedication to support young people

"From the very start, he believed in us and motivated us to achieve something our school had never done before. He dedicated countless hours to planning, training, and guiding us through every challenge, always offering encouragement and support Even when things became difficult, Mr Blain’s positivity and patience kept us going. His commitment went far beyond his role as a teacher - he truly cared about our growth and success."
Mr Blain was presented with his award by the Mayor of Harrow on Wednesday night and will be able to use a £1,000 grant for a school project. Congratulations to Mr Blain on his fantastic work!

This year’s Jack Petchey Assembly Final was a roaring success! The English department would like to wish Tessa Elmer, Rachana Solanki, Devpratap Rawat and Cynthia Chang, who are all in Year 10, huge congratulations on their outstanding performances during the Year 9 assembly final on Wednesday 21st January.
After being chosen as assembly finalists during the Jack Petchey Workshops, which took place earlier this academic year, these students worked tirelessly to perfect their speeches and showcase their excellent public speaking skills
Tessa Elmer and Rachana Solanki were chosen as assembly final winners and will progress to the next stage in the competition, the Regional Finals, which will be held at Bentley Wood High School on Wednesday 11th March. A huge well done and we wish you the best of luck for the next stage

Jack Petchey Awards Evening
Wednesday 11th February 2026
We are incredibly proud of our 2025 Jack Petchey Achievement Award winners, who were presented with their gold medallion by the Mayor of Harrow at the Harrow Arts Centre on Thursday 11th February Students received their award in front of a packed audience alongside 120 other award winners from across Harrow in an evening full of music, dance and celebration. All students had shown fantastic personal qualities to be recognised with their awards, so congratulations to Sabiha, Arian, Leo, Nikhil, Savana, Vicent, Sukhveer, Kavi and Ajay, and to Mr Blain for winning the Leader Award after being nominated by students
We also celebrated Nower Hill students who were nominated for the Jack Petchey Award by other organisations. Congratulations to Aryan, Aaryan, Cruz, Jareesh and Milo for their work with Headstone Manor Youth Football Club and to Ibrahim who was recognised by his previous school

Safer Internet Day
Tuesday 10th February 2026
This week our whole school community came together to mark Safer Internet Day Students reflected on how to use the internet safely, responsibly, and positively Our Personal Development sessions focused on real-life scenarios involving online safety, social media, and AI, encouraging students to explore how online actions can impact others and what responsible next steps might look like. Students also engaged with thought-provoking true or false statements, sparking valuable discussions on digital behaviours.
To deepen the reflection, all students took part in a 10minute end-of-day discussion centred on this statement:
“Research shows that social media can be addictive,

affect mental health, disrupt sleep, and influence body image The internet itself isn’t harmful, but how we use it matters ”
This allowed students to explore the effects of screen time on mood, sleep, focus, and learning - and to think about small changes they can make, like switching off devices before bed or limiting scrolling.
To finish off the week, students were invited to enter a poster competition promoting tips for healthy screen time and smart digital choices We look forward to announcing the winner after half-term!

Nower Hill students got things started way back in March last year when they visited the UCAS Exhibition at ExCeL London and have been supported ever since by their teachers and the 6th Form Team.

Celebrating Year 7
Halfway Through Their First Year at Nower Hill
As Year 7 reach the halfway point of their first year at Nower Hill, it has been a pleasure to reflect on just how far they have come and to celebrate their many successes
Since joining us in September, Year 7 have settled into secondary school life exceptionally well. They have become confident navigating the school site, embracing routines, and developing positive learning habits. It has been especially heartwarming to see new friendships form and a strong sense of year-group community emerge.
Academically, the Year group has made a very positive start Collectively, Year 7 have accumulated an impressive total over 46,000 achievement points so far this academic year Their first Tracking Point A results are strong, with an average Commitment to Learning score of 3.6 and an average Homework score of 3.5, demonstrating a mature and enthusiastic approach to their studies.
We recently celebrated these achievements in a Year 7 rewards assembly, which was extremely well received. Students demonstrated an excellent celebratory attitude, applauding one another’s successes and showing genuine pride in their year group
Year 7 have also embraced learning beyond the classroom All students had the opportunity to visit the British Museum as part of a Year group trip, enriching their curriculum learning and supporting their cultural understanding. In Physical Education, students have shown resilience and determination by successfully completing the road run, a significant milestone in
their physical development
Beyond lessons, Year 7 have thrown themselves into the rich range of clubs and extracurricular opportunities on offer Students are taking part in activities such as Coding Club, Classical Greek Club, 3D Printing, Glee Club, Football Club, Science Club, and many more, reflecting the wide range of interests and talents within the year group.
Sporting success has also been a highlight, with the Year 7 Basketball Team reaching the final of the Harrow Basketball League. We look forward to supporting them in the final on Wednesday 12th February 2026 and wish them the very best of luck
Year 7 have engaged positively with a series of targeted assemblies focusing on road safety, digital safety and healthy eating, all of which were well received and supported their personal development and wellbeing.
As we look ahead, we are excited for upcoming events, including the Year 7 Spring Party on 20th March, which promises to be a well-deserved celebration of a fantastic first half of the year.

News from Year 8
From form time activities to assemblies to visits to the Careers room, all of Year 8 have been really busy this half term with the GCSE Options process.
So far, students have thought about their personal qualities, skills and goals for the future, using these to guide their choices for GCSE. They have been introduced to new subjects as well as finding out more about subjects they already know well from Key Stage 3.
Students have been introduced to Unifrog, a comprehensive online platform that helps students to explore and compare education and career opportunities. This is not only something for them to use at school, but can be explored further at home with family.

Focusing on Masculinity, Mental Health and Self-worth
On Tuesday 27th January, our Year 11 students took part in a thoughtprovoking assembly focusing on masculinity, mental health and selfworth. The session encouraged students to reflect on how social media, peer pressure, and expectations can shape identity and behaviour, especially for young adults Students were invited to consider more authentic and healthy ways of expressing emotion and ambition, with a strong message that there is no single way to “be” and that individuality and self respect are key to wellbeing.
Following the assembly, a selected group of students took part in a smaller workshop where they were able to explore these themes in greater depth. Looking at social influences on what it meant to be a man and whether these perceptions were always positive or negative The assembly and workshop together provided an important opportunity for Year 11 students to reflect and engage in meaningful conversations around wellbeing and stereotypes, and evaluate what masculinity looked like to them

Year 11 Zaza Restaurant Trip
The Year 11 Food Preparation and Nutrition class visited Zaza in Pinner for lunch this half term. Each student enjoyed a two course lunch which included a main course and dessert.
This was to support students with the research element of their NEA2 All of the students were polite and demonstrated exemplary behaviour on the way there and whilst at the restaurant

Year 11 Time Management
Practical skills workshop focused on developing effective time management
On Wednesday 21st January, some of our Year 11 students took part in a practical skills workshop focused on developing effective time management. Rather than learning about time management in theory, students were challenged to apply it through completing a hands-on task
Working to a strict one hour deadline, students were given the task of making biscuits This involved organising instructions into the correct order, baking successfully and ensuring all equipment and workspaces were cleaned up by the end of the session. The challenge encouraged students to plan ahead, prioritise tasks, work out what could be completed simultaneously, whilst working efficiently under pressure. Students responded positively to the challenge and demonstrated strong problem solving and collaboration skills throughout the session

Westminster University (Harrow Campus) Visit
On Thursday 22nd January, our Year 11 Textiles and Resistant Materials students visited Westminster University (Harrow Campus) for an inspiring day that highlighted the value of creative courses. The visit included a guided campus tour, hands-on creative workshops exploring both the importance of creative degrees and practical design skills, including using everyday shapes in fashion, and an engaging Q&A session with university ambassadors. The trip gave students a positive insight into university life, highlighting its flexibility and the many possibilities available Even those not considering creative pathways found the experience valuable in shaping their understanding of higher education and future options

Year 10 Mock Interview Event
On Tuesday 20th January 2026, 27 employers kindly gave up their time for the 1:1 Mock Interview Event for our Year 10 students. During the event, every student had a 20 minute interview with an employer and were then given valuable feedback on their performance. Each student also had to bring their CV with them, in order to make the experience as realistic as possible.
Prior to the event, students had completed a preparation programme covering CV building, interview questions, listening skills, body language, eye contact, handshakes and dress code The employers were very impressed and complimentary about the array of skills and qualities our students possess. They thought our Year 10 students were extremely polite, smartly dressed, punctual and answered their questions very well.
Students found the day most rewarding and commented on how beneficial the event was, as for many of them, this was the first time they had ever had an interview
Employers were also impressed with the warm welcome they were given by Year 9 students, who were helping at the event.

National Apprenticeship Week
Monday 9th – Sunday 15th February 2026
This week we have celebrated National Apprenticeship Week in school. This is an annual week-long celebration of apprenticeships, which aims to shine a light on the amazing work being undertaken by apprentices, employers and training providers across England It is also an opportunity for students to find out more about apprenticeships and to consider them as a potential future pathway
The Careers Department was delighted to welcome two employers to school to talk about their apprenticeship schemes for young people. A former Nower Hill student working as a senior scientist at Autolus, a biotechnology company that develops new cancer treatments, talked about the Autolus science research apprenticeship for school leavers.
On Wednesday, a client partner from IBM, who is also Nower Hill parent, came with two apprentices and to talk about all the amazing apprenticeship programmes in business, technology and consulting that young people can become involved in

Transport for London Assemblies
Last month, we were thrilled to have London Transport join us for assemblies presented to Years 8, 9 and 10 TfL provided a vibrant and informative assembly, ensuring that our students understood that they are privileged as young Londoners to be able to enjoy free bus travel They were surprised that this is not the case in other large UK cities Rob's message to students included a range of points, but ones we would appreciate families reinforcing are:
* Consideration for other members of the community is key, including the hardworking bus drivers. Having a Zip card is a privilege, and sadly this can be removed if there is anti-social conduct on buses;
* Zip cards should always be tapped on buses; this ensures that London Transport will know when to put on additional buses when they are over crowded, plus it provides a measure of safeguarding and security should accurate CCTV be required to support any incidents on buses;
* Students should only ever use the front door of the bus, and always move down the bus to enable others to get on safely;
* For students' own safety, during quieter times, it is a good idea to sit near the bus driver, and to always sit in an aisle seat; this will ensure that they do not feel trapped and unable to leave their seat if someone sits next to them who they would rather move away from.

Ben Kinsella Trust Workshop
On Wednesday 21st January we took a group of KS3 and KS4 students to the Ben Kinsella Trust to attend a workshop on trust, choices and consequences. The workshop explored the serious consequences of carrying knives, highlighting not only the immediate dangers but also the broader impact on individuals, families, and communities.
Ben Kinsella was a 16-year-old who was sadly stabbed to death in a horrific act of senseless violence on 29th June 2008. We were given an insight into his life both before and after his untimely death. Ben advocated to end knife crime in London and his murder shattered the lives of all who encountered him.
As part of the session, the students watched a short film in which Ben’s family and friends shared their personal experiences, reflecting on the effect his loss still has on their lives We also looked at the longterm implications of a criminal record on employment and travel opportunities The concept of joint enterprise was explained and how assisting or encouraging a crime to take place, even just by being there and recording with mobile phones could lead to a criminal record.
Our students engaged very well in the workshop and were constantly praised for their exemplary behaviour and participation.
The Trust run a 2 hour free workshop for Parents and Carers, titled “Helping our Children Stay Safe” with a range of topics, including:
• Understanding knife crime from the perspective of young people;
• The signs and stages of child exploitation;
• Gangs and gang-life;
• Having meaningful conversations about difficult topics.

A Year 9 and Year 10 GCSE PRE class took part in an online interfaith conference exploring the concept of Religious Discrimination
The main theme this year was ‘Why Remember?’ Students looked at a range of images and were encouraged to work out what was happening. They then listened to representatives from a range of faiths to hear their communities views on oppression and discrimination.

Holocaust Memorial Day
Tuesday 27th January 2026
30 students in Year 9 attended a Holocaust Memorial Day service at Northwood and Ruislip Synagogue who kindly invited us.
Our students were engaged and showed great maturity exploring such an important topic Shortly after returning to school we received this email : “ We were very impressed with the quality of some of their questions, their engagement in the program and their behaviour in general ”

This term Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 students received assemblies on the Holocaust Memorial Day theme for 2026 of 'Bridging Generations’, a call-to-action and a reminder that the responsibility of remembrance doesn't end with the survivors - it lives on through their children, their grandchildren and through all of us
Part of the assembly gave students a chance to reflect on the importance of using their voice to challenge and stand up as a call to action
Bridging Generations Workshops
This term Year 11 and 13 students have completed workshops on the Holocaust Memorial Day theme. Part of the workshop reflected on the Holocaust and recognised other genocides, with a focus on the Bosnian genocide. The theme of ‘Bridging Generations’ encourages us to engage actively with the past - to listen, to learn and to carry those lessons forward By doing so, we build a bridge between memory and action, between history and hope for the future

The Srebrenica Memorial Centre for the victims of the 1995 Genocide. This serves as a place of remembrance for the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica
Citizenship Workshops
Stand up! Education against discrimination
Throughout January 2026, Year 9 students have been taking part in anti-discrimination workshops in their Citizenship lessons. The workshops were delivered by Stand Up! Education against Discrimination with a focus on tackling anti-Semitism and anti-Muslim hate.
Students have learnt about equality legislation in the UK and have discussed key relevant issues in relation to stereotypes, discrimination and hate crimes. Students were also educated on how they can play an active role in reporting and challenging hate speech especially on social media.
These workshops formed an important part of the work that has been done throughout the school in commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day

Jack Petchey Glee Club Challenge
We are incredibly proud of our Glee group, who attended the semi-finals of the Jack Petchey Glee Club Challenge on Sunday 18th January. They delivered two outstanding contrasting performances, competing against talented teams from across London and Essex.
In preparation for the challenge they had the opportunity to refine their songs with West End star Dean Read, who is currently starring in Moulin Rouge! After months of hard work, their dedication truly paid off; the group were awarded 1st place, securing a coveted spot in the Grand Final on Sunday 19th April at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London’s West End. What an amazing achievement!

In January, we welcomed Miranda Mufema, who stars in the critically acclaimed West End prequel stage production of Stranger Things: The First Shadow, to the Drama Department Miranda led a series of workshops with our Year 11 GCSE Drama students
At the beginning of the academic year, the Year 11 GCSE Drama cohort attended a performance of The First Shadow in London, in which Miranda plays Patty. Set in 1959 Hawkins, the prequel explores the early life of Henry Creel (the future Vecna) before the events of the television series The play follows his arrival in town, his budding romance with fellow outcast Patty Newby, and the discovery of his powers and the Upside Down These storylines intertwine with younger versions of Joyce Byers and Jim Hopper as they investigate a series of local disappearances, culminating in a visually spectacular origin story for the show’s main villain.
Moulin Rouge! & Glee Club Workshop
During the workshops with Miranda, students explored how Stranger Things: The First Shadow was directed and designed, examined approaches to character development, and received valuable career advice about working in the arts. The experience will directly support their studies, as students will go on to write about the Stranger Things production in their Component 2 written examination at the end of Year 11.
On Monday 12th January 16 students from our Glee Club attended a performance of Moulin Rouge! We were invited by Dean Read, who is currently playing the role of Harold Zidler. The next day, all of our Glee Club members took part in a 2 hour workshop with Dean Dean supported students with their songs for the Jack Petchey Glee Club competition, working on their characterisation, stamina, enhancing vocal performance, working on the light and shade and phrasing

Year 11 Basketball
The Year 11 basketball team started their campaign this year with their first group game against Park High School on Wednesday 19th November 2026 The team started strongly and were only within a few points by the end of the first half, but Park High fought back and managed to win the game 56-29.
In their second group match, they came up against last year's runners up, Canons High School. Again, Nower Hill made a strong start to the match, but unfortunately fell away towards the end of the fourth quarter and were eventually beaten 51-35.
In their final group stage game, Nower Hill played local rivals Pinner High School The game was end to end and very tight throughout, with Nicolas Brooks scoring a 3 point winner with only 4 seconds remaining on the clock to seal a fantastic win for the team going into the finals.
In their quarter final match against Salvatorian College, they came up against a very well organised team. The boys' fought hard, but were unable to match the quick distribution and attacking threat from Salvatorian and unfortunately lost 57-36. Although Nower Hill were unable to progress further in the competition, the Year 11 team has shown excellent progress since the start of the season and should be very proud of their progress and development this year

Badminton
The U16 girls and Year 7 badminton teams produced excellent performances at their recent tournaments Competing in both singles and doubles matches, the teams played confidently from the very first round and quickly established themselves as strong contenders. After winning several games in the group stage, the teams progressed to reach the semi-finals, where they delivered another determined performance to book their place in the final.
The final proved to be an extremely close and exciting match The U16 girls fought for every point in both singles and doubles games and very narrowly missed out on the title
The Year 7 team managed to secure the win with an impressive performance throughout. Well done to all players involved for an outstanding tournament performance.

Year 7 Basketball Semi Final
On Friday 30th January, the Year 7 basketball team played in the semi-final of the Harrow Borough Cup It was a very close and competitive game against a strong side from Salvatorian College.
We started the game well, taking an early lead thanks to excellent teamwork, some great interceptions, and quick transitions from defence to attack. By the end of the second quarter, we were in control of the game with a 10–2 lead. However, in the third quarter, Salvatorian College came back strongly, levelling the score at 10–10 and setting up a very tense final quarter
Our athletes from Years 7-9 put in a fantastic effort at this year’s indoor athletics tournaments, delivering consistent performances across a wide range of events. The team showed real strength on the track, particularly in the running and relay races, and also impressed in the field events, including long jump, triple jump and vertical jump.
Well done to all teams who competed for their effort, teamwork and positive attitude, particularly the Year 9 girls for coming 1st place, Year 8 girls for coming 2nd place and Year 7 Girls for coming 3rd place! Congratulations to all students who took part

The last quarter was a great watch, with both teams attacking throughout as they pushed for the winning basket Luckily for us, Paddy scored the winning basket with a brilliant two-point shot, following some excellent teamwork with Thomas.
Massive congratulations to the Year 7 team, and we now look forward to the final against Cannons High. Well done to Buvindu, Vincci, Thomas, Paddy, Aarav, Ashrith, Ajmer, Zachariah, Carina, and Dhyan.
