Dear Parents and Carers Welcome to the Christmas edition of the Nower Hill News as we say farewell to an extremely long and eventful term - you can read all about it further on in the News.

And on that note, this will be my last Christmas Nower Hill News to all of you; it's a strange feeling having a series of 'lasts' after so long in the school. I was reminded of the Nower Hill life cycle once again yesterday when we interviewed yet another ex-Nower Hill student for a teaching post; it really is a joy to be able to boast so many ex-students amongst our staff - it makes the family feel we enjoy in the school so special, and long may it continue! And another last for me, the Nower Hill Christmas Panto - 5 performances this morning to a packed house every time. This is our annual gift to the children which hopefully makes for a memorable last day before Christmas - and the staff have a pretty good time too! You can see for yourself a little further on in the News.

I would like to start by thanking all of our Year 11 and 13 students for their excellent conduct throughout the mock exams period; this is an important experience for them to prepare for the real thing in the summer, and they will even experience the highs and lows of a results day later in January. I would also like to thank all of our staff who have been, and will be, marking exam papers over the holidays, so the students can receive useful feedback on their return. When they come back in January, it will be for that all important 4 months before they take their final exams, so we advise a suitable rest over the Christmas holidays in order to come back eager to 'up their game' and aim even higher!

So I end for one final time by wishing you all a merry Christmas and a happy, healthy, New Year. Thank you all for your continued support of the school over the year and for your very kind cards and Christmas gifts. School resumes for students on Tuesday 9th January 2024 at 8.45am, so until then, take great care and enjoy the break.

I would also like to say a very big thank you to all in the school community who represented the school so well during our recent Ofsted inspection. As we will all know from the unfortunate media reporting around Ofsted, this can be a hugely stressful event for schools, but our staff and students were amazing and navigated this intense process with ease. At time of writing, we are yet to receive the final report, but I will be sure to share it with you as soon as we receive it, which should be directly after the holidays.

NOWER HILL NEWS Careers Fair On the 9th November students in Years 8, 10, 11 and 6th Form attended our annual Careers Fair to learn about different industries and the wealth of opportunities available to them once they leave school. Employers from GSK, Bank of America, London Stock Exchange Group, London Ambulance Service, the Army, Metropolitan Police, Bristol Myers Squibb, Skanska Costain STRABAG JV, plus a dentist and a software engineer talked to students about their careers and roles within their organisations. Local college and university representatives also discussed their courses with students and apprenticeships and careers advice was given to students. The hall was buzzing with excitement throughout the day and our employers were very impressed with the questions that our students asked them. Thank you so much to all our guests who gave up their time to raise awareness of career and course opportunities with our students.

Save the Children Christmas Jumper Day ​On Thursday 7th December 2023, Nower Hill staff and students wore their Christmas jumpers for the Save the Children's annual event which raises money for children in the UK and across the world. Every December, millions of people put on a festive outfit at their workplace, school or with friends and make a donation to help make things better for children in the UK and around the world. NOWER HILL HOUSE UPDATE House Update It has been a busy term for the Nower Hill House System. In October, our team of Year 13 Heads of House and Year 12 House Captains delivered assemblies to their Houses.

The Great Humanities House Quiz took place in October, with 65 students from all Year groups competing for to be crowned champions. Congratulations to Franklin House on their victory!

We heard some well argued proposals for new laws in the SES ‘Be a Lawmaker’ House Competition, with Franklin being voted into first place by the panel of judges and cheered on by the audience.

The House Photography Competition drew over 80 entries and almost 300 votes from students and staff across the school. Congratulations to King House on taking first place!

The achievement points and behaviour points of every student contribute to the Overall Conduct competition, with the winning House engraved on the House Shield at the end of the year.

JACK PETCHEY FOUNDATION AWARDS Congratulations to our 2023 Jack Petchey Achievement Award Winners, the scheme that recognises outstanding young people across London and Essex.

Students were nominated by students and staff for their resilience, engagement and participation in school and for showing compassion, care and support.

Students have decided to spend their £300 prize money on a wide range of projects, including new resources for KS3 Art club, new equipment for the PE and Music departments, resources for the Daffon Wellbeing Hub and on school trips in Citizenship.

NOWER HILL NEWS Paul Hannaford visits Nower Hill

Year 7-10 Awards Evening Academic Year 22-23

In the final few days of last half term, we celebrated our Year 7 to 10 students who had been nominated for an award by one of their subject teachers or Heads of Year. All students who joined us on the evening were congratulated for their determination, commitment to success and overall excellence last year; the evening was a special occasion shared alongside their families.

Nower Hill Christmas Panto Photos

After an exceptionally powerful visit last academic year, where Paul delivered assemblies for every year group in the school, we invited him back this December to deliver to our new Year 7 cohort. Although Paul's assembly is exceptionally hard hitting, we have found over time that it is the one which students have the clearest memory of. Paul recounts his personal experiences, going from a talented and eager Year 9 footballer and student, to becoming involved in drugs, a member of various gangs, and involved in significant crime. The harrowing descriptions of the impact that this had on his family and his life chances resonates with all students.

With a very unfortunate rise in crime and gang culture within Harrow, we were pleased with our students' response; they listened actively, and took on board the advice and information shared, to enable them to understand not only what to do to avoid the dark lure of gang culture, but also what to do when encountering threats on the street. Paul also ran two workshops with a variety of students across Year groups; these were also very well received. MUSIC NEWS Autumn Concert: Around the World On Thursday the 30th November, the Music Department held the annual Autumn Concert. The theme this year was ‘Around The World’ and audience members were treated to a wide range of musical styles from various countries and cultures.

On Friday 1st December, the Nower Hill Orchestra and Choir travelled to St Alban’s Church in North Harrow.

They were joined by Pinner High and Nower Hill’s Cluster primary schools, who all shared a range of vocal and instrumental performances. The Nower Hill Orchestra, led by Mrs Johnson, performed a selection of Christmas Carols for the congregation to sing along to and the choir sang a fantastic version of Hold My Hand by Lady Gaga. Our Head Students also gave the final readings. It was a lovely event and well done to everyone involved!

Year 12 Music Technology students were set the challenge of composing the music for the opening credits of a sci-fi television series called The Expanse.

MUSIC NEWS Senior Citizens’ Christmas Lunch

Glee Concert

Students from Years 8, 9 and 10 performed a selection of Christmas songs for our elderly neighbours at their Christmas lunch on Wednesday 13th December. They were accompanied by Mr Roberts on the guitar. Thank you to all who took part it was a lovely occasion.

The Glee Club performed at St Andrew’s Church for Capital Connection on Saturday 9th December. They were accompanied by Beth Leighton and Mrs Johnson. The concert was a huge success and Glee Club have already been asked to perform at more events next year! Congratulations to all who took part and a big thank you to Beth Leighton.

Drama Department: opportunity to write your own Radio Play!

Complicité are broadcasting a 12 part dramatisation of The Dark is Rising on BBC World Service this Christmas.

We invite young listeners to write their own radio play, to then have it recorded by a Complicité actor and sound designer and aired across Complicité’s

channels for thousands of listeners to hear their story.

SPORTS FIXTURES Year 7 Football

Girls’ Football

On Thursday 30th November, the Year 7 football team proudly represented Nower Hill in the Harrow borough football tournament. The Nower Hill A team was outstanding throughout the group stage, clinching the top spot without a single loss.

Nower Hill B were also fantastic, winning two out of the three games. However, due to another school in a different group having a better goal difference, our B team narrowly missed out on a semi-final place.

The A Team semi-final clash saw Nower Hill pitted against Park High. The game ended 1-1 and went to a penalty shootout. Thanks to the exceptional goalkeeping by Neel Patel, saving the first two penalties from Park High, the team advanced to the final.

In the final, we once again played Salvatorian College, and just like last time, the game finished 0-0 and went to a penalty shootout. Our first three penalty takers, Reuben Pinnock, Agozie Onyebuchi, and Abdurrahman Safraz, scored fantastic penalties, leaving the shootout to sudden death. Xavier Harrison stepped up and scored a great penalty, putting pressure on Salvatorian College. Neel Patel then made an exceptional penalty save, winning the penalty shootout and the Harrow Borough Tournament for Nower Hill.

Well done to both teams!

Well done to the U16 girls’ football team who beat Whitmore 7-0 in last week's league game with goals from Amelie Hogberg, Erin Fern and Anne-Marie Nakiganda.

In November’s Harrow Borough U16 girls’ football tournament, both our teams were successful, and made it out of their group, ending up playing each other in the semi-finals. One of our teams made it through to the final against Pinner High, but narrowly lost in the final 1-0. Well done to all the girls involved.

On Tuesday 12th December, the U16 team beat Claremont 6-1, securing themselves a place in the quarter finals of the Middlesex Cup. Well done to Neveah Rettenberg-Morris who made her debut in an age category up, and also scored 2 goals! Other goals came from Erin Fern and Amelie Hogberg.

U14 Badminton Our young team consisting of Cynthia Chang, Ishaan Sharma, Reyansh Sharma and Jayden Tang competed against Avanti House, Bentley Wood and North London Collegiate School. Three of our Year 7 players were playing against players two years above themselves and went on to finish third in the group, winning against Bentley Wood and losing to Avanti and North London Collegiate.

Year 11 Football On Thursday 2nd November 2023, the Year 11 football team kicked off this year’s Harrow Borough League campaign with a comfortable 4-3 win over Whitefriars School. Goals from Mehdi Al-Mufadal and Dhyan Sharma helped to seal the victory. The team finished top of their group and will go in to the semi finals in March, with the confidence to hopefully go all the way to the final.

Nower Hill won games against all the teams and all our players should be proud, especially considering they have jumped up 1 or 2 year groups.

They will be playing Vyners School in the third round of the Middlesex Cup on Wednesday 10th January 2024 at Bannister Sports Centre.

SPORTS FIXTURES Year 9 Basketball

Year 11 Basketball

After competing well in the tournaments over the last two years Year 9 had to try and transfer their good run into full court games. Unfortunately they narrowly lost to Whitmore and Salvatorian in thrilling games. Still a team with enormous potential!

On Wednesday 8th November 2023, the Year 11 basketball team travelled to Salvatorian College to play the first of their group games in the Harrow Borough Basketball League competition. They came up against a very strong team, but considering it was their first game and they hadn’t had much time to practice and train beforehand, they put up a good fight, but did eventually lose the match.

Outstanding effort and performances from Shabaan Ahmed, Hashim Youssouf, Joey Odika and Mugilan Anbalakan.

Year 10 Basketball Our Year 10 Basketball team embarked on an outstanding journey this season, securing victories in all three games within our group. The opening clash, away at John Lyon School, proved to be a nail-biter, ending in a 33-33 tie. However, Darren Stefanescu hit an incredible buzzer-beater, clinching the win 36-33 and instilling confidence in our group. Pravinthe Subaschandrabose and Wesley Chang showcased their prowess in shooting and seamlessly transitioned the ball from defence to attack.

The Year 11’s second match was against Whitmore High School on Thursday 30th November 2023. The team showed great improvement and fight to take an early lead in the game. The match finished with Nower Hill winning 40-18. This meant they finished second in their group and set up a quarter final showdown against Park High School on Wednesday 13th December. The team tried hard with a few key players missing, but unfortunately ended up losing the game 40-17. Although they were unsuccessful in this years campaign, they showed fantastic team spirit and determination throughout the season and should be very proud of their efforts and achievements.

The next game was at home against Salvatorian College, resulting in a commanding 41-16 triumph for Nower Hill. Yago Mechahougui skilfully controlled the game’s tempo, while Arthur Joseph and Jack Joseph dominated the boards, securing rebounds with consistency. Legend Baxter made a debut, displaying aggression in the rebound and contributing to our success.

In our final game against Whitmore High School, both teams entered with unbeaten records.

Demonstrating our best performance yet, we emerged victorious with a convincing score of 3912, claiming the top spot. Gabriel Teixeria De Mederio stood out with his positive attitude and relentless running throughout the game. Zannai Prescott dominated his opponent, ensuring a comfortable win.

THE POWER OF LANGUAGE – A STUDENT’S PERSPECTIVE I decided to learn a new language in my own time, outside of school because I believe that in modern British society, there is an unwillingness to immerse oneself in other cultures and the belief that people from other countries must learn our language, rather than us learning theirs. This belief perpetuates an “us versus them” mind set, which in turn fosters xenophobia and hostility.

The language barrier between people within our community prevents us from truly knowing and appreciating one another. Learning each other’s languages brings us together and provides a sense of unity and understanding, which is (in my opinion) what is most needed.

I chose to learn 2 languages, one of which was Mexican Spanish. I chose this because, in a few years, I plan to travel and believe learning the language of the countries I wish to travel to will break down any language barriers thus enhancing the experience. This allows me to fully communicate with people I wouldn’t otherwise be able to communicate with. I am not only attempting to learn a few simple phrases in Spanish but I aim to become fluent and converse with people on my travels. The second language I chose to learn was Hebrew, as I am of Jewish heritage and want to connect more with those closest to me and strengthen my cultural identity.

In summation, the decision to learn languages outside of school, I believe, can fuel an ambition to learn more in and out of the classroom for any of those who choose to do so.

LAW SOCIETY TALKS & CITIZENSHIP Central Criminal Court (Old Bailey) Judges Last month, Nower Hill High School’s Law Society continued its series of expert talks by legal professionals.

With a warm welcome, we invited Her Honour Judge Judy Khan KC (Senior Circuit Judge) and Mr Gary Langley (Magistrate). During this panel discussion, Judge Khan KC talked about her wide-ranging experience in the legal profession. Our students were intrigued to know more about her years as a criminal defence silk (Barrister) often defending young offenders on trial for murder. Judge Judy spoke passionately about her sense of justice in the legal system and what it was like to work her way up the career hierarchy as an ethnic minority woman.

Mr Langley spoke enthusiastically about how he has developed and used transferable skills over time. Having started and ending his career as an Accountant at a wellknown consultancy firm, Mr Langley decided to volunteer as a Magistrate after he witnessed the miscarriages of justice that can occur when being part of a jury.

Our students found this event hugely inspiring and interesting. They showed their curiosity when participating in Q&A discussions with the judges and there is no doubt that the students found it a valuable experience

ACT ‘Teaching Citizenship’ Journal Contributions This term our talented GCSE Citizenship student, Shashmy, became an author in a nationally published educational journal called ‘Teaching Citizenship’. She teamed up with Ms Azam, who is an Ambassador for the Association for Citizenship Teaching, to write a review of Sathnam Sanghera’s latest book for young people ‘Stolen History’. In this book, Sanghera introduces young readers to the British Empire and its lasting impact on society today. In doing so, Sanghera has given our students a voice to form their own judgement about the intertwined history of Britain. Shashmy’s review of this book poses a powerful message to young people, to become educated on the matter, the importance of being anti-racist and developing the skill of reading in school. Now she can incorporate this knowledge into her class essays on migration and living together in the UK. A copy of her review can be found via this hyperlink.

YEAR 10 TECHNOLOGY COMMUNITY ENTERPRISE Making and packaging chocolate boxes for the Christmas Lunch for the elderly Ms Francis 1) The process started with the Engineering class creating the 3D designs on computer working out draft angles to ensure the mold will work.

4) Hospitality and Catering students ‘tempered’ chocolate and prepared the fudge and caramel. This was the phase needing the most skill as the chocolates were hand decorated with edible gold, very delicate to handle once set. Foils and wrappers used with attention to detail.

HOSPITALITY & CATERING Thanks to The Food Teachers Centre and The Fishmongers Co, we were one of 250 schools to receive some of the 2,000 kgs of rope-grown mussels donated by Offshore Shell.

Hospitality & Catering and Food Preparation and Nutrition students have learned about nutrition and health, as well as how to cook mussels perfectly!

TRIPS Y7 Classics/Art trips Year 7 students have been out on trips to the British Museum & National Gallery as part of their Art & Classics curriculum.

They have been studying myths in art and we look forward to seeing the pottery that they will create using the ideas they saw from ancient artists next term!

Future Frontiers Success Our first cohort of Year 10 students have successfully completed phase 1 of the Future Frontiers programme.

The students visited GenTrack, an energy software company in Euston, to have 1-1 career coaching sessions. We had students speaking to actors, pilots, psychologists, sound engineers and illustrators to name but a few! We are very proud of how well the students represented Nower Hill and their enthusiasm for the programme.

TRIPS We hope that you have enjoyed seeing your children participate in the many Educational Visits that have taken place this term. This image represents a small selection of the 33 trips (with almost 950 student places) that have been organised by staff at NHHS this term.

Next term, there are many more local trips planned and we will be wishing ‘Bon Voyage’ to our Computing students, who are visiting San Francisco in February half term.

These opportunities are so enriching for our students and we are very grateful to the teams of colleagues working together to make them safe and enjoyable. Thank you!

Year 11 Visit to Uxbridge College

A-level Biology in Action Trip On Tuesday 28th November, 26 students from Year 12 and Year 13 visited the Emmanuel Centre, Westminster to attend a series of lectures organised by the 'Biology in Action' team. Talks ranged from hearing how advances in genetic diagnosis have changed the way eye diseases are treated, the earliest evidence of plague in Britain and the evolution of pathogens, the vitality of insects in biology, the dilemmas of modern-day conservation, and how understanding blood clotting has changed trauma treatments. Each talk also focused on STEM related careers and pathways. Students were also given top tips by an examiner and the Head of Biology from Primrose Kitten - a much beloved source of YouTube revision videos by our students, on how to ensure success in exams. They thoroughly enjoyed their time and asked insightful questions to the guest speakers.

On 23rd November a small group of Year 11 students visited Uxbridge College to find out about the different courses that are run for students after year 11 and to learn how they can be supported as they move from high school to a more relaxed college environment. Our students were given a tour of the college, which included workshops where college students were learning the practical aspects of motor vehicle engineering, plumbing and electrical installation. We bumped into a former Nower Hill student who was very enthusiastic about his motor mechanics course. Students even had the opportunity to sit in a mock aircraft cabin, which is used on the travel and tourism course. Our Year 11 students enjoyed their taster of college life.

NEW YORK MARATHON FUNDRAISING – NAOMI LARNER We send our thanks and congratulations to Naomi Larner, who you may remember was training to complete the New York Marathon and raise funds for our new drama theatre project. Well she did it and has raised a tidy sum for Nower Hill in the process! Please see her short write up below: I had always dreamed of running the New York Marathon, so when I finally laced up my trainers and lined up at the start, I couldn't contain my excitement. The energy of the crowd was infectious as we set off on the 26.2 mile journey through the city streets. The sheer magnitude of the event was overwhelming, but I was determined to cross that finish line.

As I ran through the five boroughs, I was thrilled by the support of the spectators lining the streets, cheering on every single runner. The camaraderie among the participants was palpable as we encouraged each other to keep pushing forward. The iconic landmarks of the city served as a backdrop to this incredible experience, and I couldn't help but feel a surge of pride as I made my way through the course.

Despite the physical and mental challenges and knowing I was raising money for a worthy cause; I was determined to conquer the marathon.

Every step brought me closer to the finish line, and when I finally crossed it, I was overwhelmed with a sense of accomplishment. The cheers and applause of the crowd filled me with a sense of euphoria, and I knew that I had achieved something truly incredible.

Running my first New York Marathon was an unforgettable experience, and it has inspired me to continue pursuing my passion for running. The sense of achievement and the overwhelming support from the community has left an indelible mark on my heart, and I can't wait to take on my next marathon challenge.

ONLINE SAFETY BLOG New Christmas Presents With Christmas a matter of days away, we wanted to advise parents on the purchase of new gadgets and technology for Christmas presents.

New devices and technologies are always popular Christmas presents but they can also pose a risk, especially when they are new to the user. Quite often, young people can be at risk (completely unintentionally) when they are using new technologies and devices for the first time.

Social Media Age Ratings

We would therefore like to ask for the support of our parents and carers when purchasing these gifts to be extra aware of the dangers they can pose when young people are learning and experiencing their new Christmas presents.

We’d like to also take this opportunity to remind everyone about the different age ratings that apply to the various social media platforms. As you will see from the image above, the vast majority of social media platforms have a minimum age rating of 13.

WhatsApp have increased their age rating from 13 to 16.

If you do need advice and support, please visit the Nower Hill website for information on Online Safety (you will find the information under the ‘Parents’ tab). This area is frequently updated with tips, advice and parent guides on the use of social media.

We know that unfortunately, underage use of social media is incredibly common, with social media companies doing very little to prevent it. Can we therefore ask for parents and carers support in actively monitoring their children's use of these apps over the Christmas break, when our young people will almost certainly be using their smartphones and social media for longer periods of time.

BRILLIANT PARENTS Great opportunity for parents / carers who are keen to participate in training regarding managing teenage conflict The organisation "Brilliant Parents" has had a lot of positive feedback from families who have previously attended training. In the new year, they are offering a session especially for interested Nower Hill parents /carers and full details are on the flyer. There are a very limited number of places available, so please be sure to book quickly if you are interested. It will be hosted in person at Nower Hill by the organisation. Parenting Support Discussion Groups Each month "Brilliant Parents" offer free discussion groups on problems commonly encountered by parents. They are given tips and suggestions for dealing with their children’s challenging behaviour, looking at short video clips and sharing their thoughts with other parents. Parents and Carers are actively involved throughout the 2-hour small group format discussions. The following discussion groups are coming up;

Work Experience

YEAR 12 Are you able to offer one of our 6th Form students a work placement?

Year 12 go on work experience from Monday 24th June - Friday 28th June 2024 The placements will be linked to the degree course or apprenticeship they wish to study at University.

YEAR 10 Are you able to offer one of our Year 10 students a work placement?

Year 10 go on work experience from Monday 29th April – Thursday 2nd May 2024

The placements will help our students understand the world of work, develop skills and motivate them at school.
