Welcome to our 6th Form

At Nower Hill, we are proud to focus on:  the relentless pursuit of academic excellence

providing outstanding, individual student support

preparing our students thoroughly for university or employment

a wide variety of valuable enrichment activities

a commitment to school community contribution

In summer 2022, our A Level students received the first set of public examination results for three years. Nationally, grades dropped this year as the Government started to bring back A Level outcomes to be in line with those achieved pre pandemic in 2019. However, at Nower Hill, the trend was bucked and we were delighted to deliver the school’s best ever A Level results, better even than the past 2 years of Centre Assessed Grades. 45% of all A Level grades were at A*/A and 70% of all grades at A* to B. The progress made by Nower Hill students at A Level was outstanding and the ALPS score of 2 put us in the top 10% of schools and colleges nationally. 82% of all A Level grades were at grades A* C.

In 2022, as in previous years, a significant number of students obtained places on highly competitive courses at Russell Group universities. Our students and staff work tremendously hard to ensure such outcomes, with the result that all of our students leave with very promising futures and Nower Hill’s reputation for academic excellence is further established.

In the last 3 years, 9 students have gone on to study at Oxford or Cambridge and 13 students have gone on to study Medicine, Dentistry or Veterinary Science. We have also sent a significant number of students to elite art schools and music conservatoires or colleges. Six of our students have gone to the world renowned arts and design college Central St. Martins. We have also seen the number of students securing places on highly competitive apprenticeships grow significantly, with students securing degree apprenticeships at organisations such as Google, Cisco, Dell, the Metropolitan Police, BP and PwC.

In our last inspection, Ofsted stated:

“The 6th Form is outstanding. Students are extremely keen to achieve. They engage quickly in lessons, maintain high levels of concentration and acquire knowledge rapidly. This, together with teachers’ exceptional planning, high expectations, positive relationships and examination focus, contributes significantly to students’ outstanding academic progress over time. The curriculum provides an extensive range of 6th Form courses.”

The Study Environment

Our 6th Form students enjoy their own IT room, spacious common room/study centre and by the time the new students arrive next year, there will be a new refectory Students also have access to the extensive school library.

The 6th Form Common Room and IT Room are open from 8.00am until 5.45pm and offer a comfortable environment, which is conducive to effective study and free from distraction.

Supported Study

We place great emphasis on the importance of supporting our students as they transition from GCSE to A Level and throughout their 6th Form courses. A comprehensive study skills, mentoring and support programme is provided from the start of Year 12 and is delivered by our specialist team. This programme of support, known as Supported Study, helps students to develop the independent learning skills that students need for success at A Level and beyond.

6th Form study mentors are available during Supported Study sessions to deliver and support in the following areas:

• Time management skills

• Personal organisation and work planning

• Independent learning skills

• Revision strategies

• Small group mentoring and motivation support

• Peer to peer learning and coaching

• Legibility of work for examination purposes

4

We offer a very wide range of subjects at Nower Hill. Most students will study 3 A Levels as these are all that are required by universities, but the more demanding option of studying 4 A Levels will be open to students with the appropriate grade profile at GCSE. Further Maths is offered as a fourth A Level.

The current specification A Levels are linear, meaning all the assessment is at the end of two years of study. In previous years, students were able to sit AS Level examinations that counted towards the final A Level grade. This is no longer the case. To reflect the fact that A Levels have become more challenging and students need a deeper understanding of their subjects, we provide students with an increased amount of teaching time over the two years compared to when A Levels were modular. Universities do not require students to sit AS Level examinations and therefore, students at Nower Hill do not sit AS exams at the end of Year 12.

Personal, Social and Health Education

Our 6th Form is focussed on preparing students thoroughly and effectively for adult life by equipping them with the skills, resilience, confidence and ambition to enable them to succeed. Our 6th Form assembly and workshop programme covers a wide range of topics to support students, including student finance; exam organisation and preparation; professional conduct/respect; self esteem and resilience; dealing with exam anxiety and preparing for post 18 transition. We also have 18 dedicated Form Tutors, who provide daily advice and guidance on both academic and pastoral matters.

Personal Social Ethics (PSE)

Such is our commitment to preparing our students for adult life that in addition to Form Time, all Nower Hill 6th Formers will also enjoy one period per week on PSE. These sessions will follow a carefully planned curriculum through the two years covering PRE, Citizenship and RSE (Relationships and Sexual Education) programmes of study. PSE is assessed through classroom activities and end of unit presentations. PSE is planned and delivered by subject experts and provides an important opportunity to explore issues that are relevant to the social and personal development of our students.

EPQ (Extended Project Qualification)

Around 20 30 students each year choose to complete an EPQ on a topic of their choice. It must be above or beyond their A Level studies and usually comprises of a 5000 word essay and log book or an artefact and 2000 word summary. The EPQ demonstrates a student’s ability to research and write in depth about an academic issue and is promoted by many of the most competitive universities. Some will reduce the offers made to students who have successfully completed an EPQ.

5 6th Form Curriculum 2022-23

Opportunities

We are pleased to offer an inspirational 6th Form experience combining excellent academic provision with outstanding extra and super curricular opportunities. Students at Nower Hill 6th Form take part in music and theatre productions, Young Enterprise, mentoring, volunteering, sports and charity activities, all of which build resilience, articulacy and leadership skills and this results in the creation of a vibrant student community.

Volunteering

At the start of Year 12, a comprehensive Volunteering Programme is initiated and all students are expected to contribute the equivalent of one period per week to volunteering within the school community. A wide range of opportunities are available ranging from assisting in lower school lessons to running after school clubs. This enables our students to gain experiences and skills that will enrich their applications for higher education and employment but more importantly, it instils a deeper community spirit where our 6th Form Students are able to add real value to the spirit of the school. As part of this programme we offer training to the students so that they are equipped and given the confidence to work with younger students. By volunteering, students learn the skills that will develop character, resilience, teamwork and empathy, preparing them for all aspects of their future.

Social and Charity Events

6th Form is not just about studying all the time and at Nower Hill we are keen for our students to enjoy social activities too. A number of social events occur during the year and are organised by the Senior Student Leaders. Charity events are also planned throughout the year to raise money for our six designated House charities.

UCAS Preparation

Guidance and support is directed at students throughout their courses and although we are very aware that university is not the only route for students, we do strongly encourage all students to submit a UCAS application in Year 13 as they can always withdraw at a later time. We are fortunate to have a designated UCAS Adviser on the staff team who will guide, support and advise students through the process. In particular, the UCAS Adviser assists on making course choices and preparing Personal Statements.

Oxbridge/Medicine/Dentistry/Veterinary Preparation (Early UCAS Entry)

We offer a full programme of application preparation with academic mentors who have the relevant expertise and experience. All students applying for Oxbridge, Medicine, Veterinary or Dentistry are given mock interviews with relevant teachers and professionals. In addition, personalised support is provided to all Year 13 students applying for competitive universities or apprenticeships.

Aspire Programme

The Aspire Programme runs from February in Year 12 and is designed to support all students with aspirations of applying to highly competitive university and apprenticeship courses. Students attend workshops on applying, interviewing, presenting, debating and critical thinking. Feedback is given throughout so that students are given the best possible chance of success.

Senior Student Leaders

We believe it is vital that 6th Form students play an important role in the running of the 6th Form and the leadership of the school. The Senior Student Leaders include the Head and Deputy Head Students and Heads of House for each of our six houses: Bannister, Franklin, Ghandi, King, Nightingale and Shabazz. In addition, the Senior Student Leaders organise and lead the following committees:

Charity

Environment

Equality and Diversity

Mentoring and Volunteering

Social and Prom

Sports and Leisure

Wellbeing

The Senior Student Leaders work alongside the 6th Form Staff Team to organise social events, run House assemblies, House competitions and events, give speeches and presentations to year groups, liaise with teaching staff and promote Nower Hill. We are very proud of our Senior Student Leaders and the skills that they demonstrate.

"As Head Student I work with Travis to help organise everyone's ideas and make all the committees work together to make Nower Hill a better school. It is a great opportunity to give back to school and help grow the community within the school. Senior Students Leaders (SSL) team get to engage with younger years and be a voice for them " Niamh - Head Student

"The SSL team is a group of like minded individuals who work together to implement new innovative ideas that help improve the lives of 6th Formers and lower school students. As Head Student, I work alongside Niamh and the SSL team to devise and implement ideas for students to have an incomparable high school experience. I am proud to give back to the school and help strengthen the community as a whole."

Bursary Payments

Bursary payments are available for 6th Form students who are facing financial barriers to participation in education. Any student who thinks they might be eligible should indicate this in their online application.

Rhianna, Y12

Studying: Fine Art, Psychology & English Literature

Future aspiration: I plan to go to university to study Law

I decided to stay at Nower Hill, not only because of its high quality teaching, but because of how supportive and encouraging the teachers are. The teachers really helped me reach my full academic potential during my GCSEs and I am certain that will continue throughout these next two years. I am really looking forward to the leadership opportunities in the 6th Form. For example, being able to volunteer in one of the Fine Art classes and offering my advice to the lower years based on my experiences. I am also excited to do my own EPQ after having watched the Year 13s insightful presentations. I would recommend Nower Hill 6th Form because of the incredibly helpful teachers and variety of subjects and opportunities offered.

Leon, Year 12

Studying Further Maths, Physics & Computer Science

Future aspiration: To study a Masters Degree in Computing at a Russell Group university

I chose to attend Nower Hill 6th Form as it has some of the best results for A Levels. Along with the teachers being helpful and supportive with the transition to 6th form, the lessons are very productive and engaging. I am enjoying my A Levels so far and think they are the key to my success in the future, whether it is going to university or getting a job. I am part of the Equality and Diversity Committee, where we organise events for heritage months, such as Black History and PRIDE month. I would recommend Nower Hill 6th Form because they accept students with grades 5 6, who then go on to become high achievers through their own hard work, alongside the teachers pushing their students to reach their full potential.

Maria, Year 12

Studying: Psychology, Maths & Biology

Future aspiration: I would like to attend university and build a career involving either Finance or Psychology

I knew I wanted to stay at Nower Hill as the opportunities that were presented by the 6th Form were inviting. Having been a student at Nower Hill for five years also made it easier for me to begin my A Levels here. I feel like I have settled into the 6th Form well. A Levels are significantly harder than GCSEs, but my subjects are interesting and I am enjoying the challenges they give. I am really looking forward to the social and charity events that will take place this year. I strongly recommend attending Nower Hill 6th Form. The teaching staff and 6th Form team are incredibly welcoming and helpful. Nower Hill 6th Form has allowed me to develop independence as well as interact with a wide range of different people which has helped develop my confidence.

Zohaib, Year 12

Studying: Geography, PRE & Maths

Future aspiration: I plan on going to university to further pursue my education

I personally really like the system at Nower Hill as I know the school, teachers and other peers. With the Nower Hill system and the correct mindset, I feel I am more likely to achieve my plan of going to a top university. I am looking forward to volunteering in lessons and I am also part of the Environment Committee as I want to help make Nower Hill a more biodiverse and eco friendly school. I would definitely recommend Nower Hill 6th Form to all. The staff are very supportive in making the jump between GCSEs and 6th Form. The facilities provided for the 6th Form students are top class, with the Common Room being a great place to study during Supported Study sessions and to meet friends at break. Finally, the Nower Hill 6th Form allows for individuality between students, allowing them to wear their own clothes.

Year 13 students in their own words…

Husna, Year 13

Studying: English Literature, Politics and PRE

Future aspiration: I hope to go to University and study for a degree in International Relations and pursue a career in Politics.

I would recommend Nower Hill as a 6th Form as they offer a wider variety of subjects in comparison to other 6th Forms. Furthermore, the staff are committed to helping their students achieve the best grades possible. Nower Hill strongly encourages its students to involve themselves in extra and super curricular activities. This is not only to enhance your personal statement, but also to build you as a person with qualities that are needed for the future. Alongside my studies, I have volunteered at a Philosophy club and also had the opportunity to complete an EPQ. My EPQ, which was on the 2003 UK and US led invasion of Iraq, enabled me to work on my time management and also enhance my passion for Politics.

Rashardo, Year 13

Studying: Physical Education, PRE & Business Studies

Future aspiration: Hopefully to study Sports Science at one of the top universities that specialise in sport.

The continuous support provided by all teachers and assistants made attending Nower Hill 6th Form a certain choice for me. I thoroughly enjoy the freedom and independence that comes alongside A Levels. Captaining the football team has been a highlight of my time within the 6th Form. Additionally, coaching and mentoring the younger years in various different sporting activities such as Sports Day and the Year 7/8 girls’ football tournament. I would definitely recommend Nower Hill 6th Form due to the assistance, support and friendly environment. Teachers go above and beyond to ensure each child achieves their potential.

Aneesha, Year 13

Studying: Maths, Physics and Business Studies

Future aspiration: I plan to study Mechanical Engineering at Loughborough University

Nower Hill’s reputation for being strong in STEM subjects was one of the main reasons I chose to be here, along with the comfort of knowing the teachers, students and school from lower years. I joined the Senior Student Leadership team which has simultaneously given me a sense of leadership and teamwork. Being able to work with different year groups and plan events that would be enjoyed by all is extremely exciting. I would highly recommend Nower Hill as the teachers treat you like young adults and yet are always there to support you.

Milo, Year 13

Studying: Music, Music Technology and Psychology

Future aspiration: To study Music in the UK’s most prestigious Conservatoires, with the hope of a career in this area.

My subjects are going really well as the teachers are highly qualified and the equipment in the Music Department is excellent. Volunteering is strongly encouraged and is something that I have enjoyed and gained many skills from. There are numerous opportunities for 6th Formers to organise social and charity events that are great fun to get involved in. The staff are very supportive and the relationships that you can form with teachers can really help you feel more comfortable when learning or asking for help.

Timeline

“My six years at Nower Hill gave me the rigorous education and life skills that have helped me reach where I am today. Since completing my A Levels at Nower Hill, I have graduated from Cambridge University with First Class Honours in Mechanical Engineering and am now working in London as an Associate at The Boston Consulting Group, a world leading strategy consulting firm. Looking back, I am immensely grateful to have had such dedicated teachers at Nower Hill, who believed in us, encouraged us and went above and beyond to help us reach our goals.”

“My time at Nower Hill both through high school and 6th Form were incredibly enjoyable and gave me a strong foundation to then move on to university. The staff took a personal interest in the success of their students and often went above and beyond to give us the best opportunity to do well. I'm very grateful for my time there and the opportunities that it provided. Whilst at university, I applied for internships across a variety of industries and opted to accept an offer in the banking industry. Following this, I undertook a Graduate role with Lloyds Banking Group where I have worked in Risk, Compliance to Regulatory Change, Corporate and Commercial Finance, International Private Banking and have recently joined permanently as an incident Response Manager in Group Security and Fraud.”

“Since completing my A Levels, I have attended Exeter University to read Philosophy with proficiency in Italian, and graduated from there in 2011 with a 2:1 honours BA. After a PGCE in Secondary Religious Education at the Institute of Education in London, I am now a teacher at Haydon School. The opportunities and support that Nower Hill gave me whilst I was a student here and have continued to give since leaving the school, has definitely helped me get to where I am today! I could not have done it without them.”

“After completing my A Levels, I have gone on to study a BSc in Mathematics and Computer Science as well as an MSc in Human Computer Interaction at the University of Birmingham. I graduated with a 2.1 in my BSc and a Distinction in my masters. Nower Hill definitely helped to solidify my interest in Computer Science and Technology and I would have not chosen the higher education that I did without their support. I now work as a Technology Consultant at the Management Consultancy firm Deloitte, who are widely regarded as one of the top five places to work for graduates. I thoroughly enjoy my job and owe a great deal of my achievement to Nower Hill. Without the opportunities and support I was given, I would not be where I am today. From my experience of Nower Hill, if you put enough effort in, you can (amongst other things) expect to establish life long networks, cultivate an arsenal of transferrable skills and go on to achieve above and beyond expectations.”
