I believe that designers should be multidisciplinary in different aspects. Design is not parallel but rather diverging. I aim towards this belief, and to master different skills in different aspects for different identity.

Airbnb is a meeting point that connects between the local and foreigners, where the travellers seek authetic accommodations with hosts who offer unique places to stay; where guests get to experience the true localised home. The aim of Airbnb is to connect people and foster a borderless relationship from different countries through living in a localised home. With the site located in a shophouse, my concept is an idea of homesharing living in the olden days of Singapore, with the inspiration of the past accessories through its form and materiality and reuse them into a modern and contemporary taste. It becomes an eclectic mixture of moments, textures and experiences.

Where the modern and the heritage can unite and illustrate how the past elements are still capable of making a contemporary design today.

Upon leaving the private space (bedrooms) is the immediate public space (kitchen).

Despite that transitory spaces are the metamorphosis for people to engage in an interaction, I have blurred that impression by having a straightforward transit from spaces to spaces by implementing them parallel to each other, giving no allowance for bridging between the different spaces.

2 MOVEMENTS

THEME: Sonia Delaunay’s colours and shapes movement DURATION: Approximately 6 months SITE: Wheeler’s Yard, 28 Lor Ampas, Singapore 328781

Sonia Delaunay started out as an artist who was inspired by the post-impressionist and fauvist art, but her legacy was left specifically for her avant garde patterns that were influenced from the ‘Simultaneous Contrast’ movement. In addition, her patterns and colours were further composed into her dress designs that were fashioned to suit the female’s body and movement; where she believed that art should be applied to everyday life. This exhibition will stimulates and inaugurates her idea of colours contrast and patterns unity by implementing the combination of primary colours and generic geometrical shapes.

To incorporate the idea of ‘everyday life’, where people are living at a slower pace of life and freedom of movement.

17 | Doreen Lau

Portfolio | 18

MOVEMENTS | Development

In Michel Eugene Chevreul’s 13 law of Simultaneous Contrast, it was made clear that colour is not static, but is dynamic and relative. The appearance of a colour changes according to its context, particularly in terms of hue and chroma. When the eyes look at the overall of the model, the colour in the affected portion will appear as dissimilar as possible. In each model, there are 3 colours involved, but it appeared to have 4 colours combined and vise versa.

KEYWORDS

• Simultaneous Contrast • Rhythmic Flow • Freedom • Movement • Abstract shapes and colours

The effect of a gradient of colours overlaid on the shadows to achieve a kind of atmospheric effect.

• Zig-zags, chevrons • Not of specific geometric shapes • Red, green, blue, neutral tones and hues mixed into her desired colours

• Freedom in space = less ‘guided’ with partitions but of artworks • Visitors will decide what they want to see at their own choice

• Neutral coloured and generic furniture (dark/white/neutral) • Make her art pieces and colours to stand out on its own without additional disruption

• Her textiles inspired to be part of the exhibit accessory • Incorporating site with her philosophy of ‘colours’ that create an effect of different spaces

This will exhibit the history of Sonia Delaunay, specifically into the starting point of her career. It will also document other artists / writers who had included Delaunay’s idea into their works.

This exhibits the photographs and sketches that show the people who wore her designs. Some sketches will show the conceptual ideas of certain theme. Visitors can observe the patterns and colours combination from a different perspective.

This third section (or alternate session from supporting documents) will display her avant garde patterns creation. It will also consists of the book keeping of her patterns design. Visitors will get to interact with the textiles via the flipping panels to have a sense on the materiality of the fabrics.

This displays the actual scale and proportion of dresses on human bodies. Visitors are able to interact with the dresses through mirrors to see how they may look like in these dresses.

After a range of different studies and getting inspired through different mediums, visitors will have the opportunity to create their own unique patterns and have them printed on their ideal textiles.

Other than fabricating your own textiles, visitors can go to the smallscaled fabric stalls to purchase large quantity and artsy type of fabrics for their personal uses.

The model shows the gigantic entrance of the space and greeted by the patterned textiles designed by Sonia Delaunay. Her textiles were used as part of an exhibit artefact, as well as an accessory of the space. Through this, visitors get to have a sneak preview of the exhibition and her ideas of colours and shapes. The lighting has also cast the shadows of the structure at the model (that was used to hold the hanging artefacts) at an angle. It was attempted to create a kind of ‘shadow cast shape’ onto the white curved panels.

Home is a place where family members of different personalities and habits are held together by elements that hold a meaning. The spatial elements layout and its relationships play a major part in establishing the interactions between the members. It is a bi-annual architectural magazine-journal, published in English language. The content of the magazine is largely based in essays format thus it is text heavy and the design is kept formal. The journal privileges ideas over references, an originality of argument over the reiteration of existing positions. It mainly explore the developments in architecture, engineering, landscape and urbanism that touch on the philosophy, history related and criticism.
