Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation Estates Update I am writing to share an update on our estate, outlining the major improvements that have taken place across the Foundation this summer. This update is focused solely on our buildings and grounds – teaching, enrichment and pastoral life remain unaffected, and pupils will return to the same vibrant, busy school they know and love. This summer has been one of the busiest in recent memory across our Foundation, with the Estates Team working hard to restore, upgrade and reimagine our historic estate. From behind the scenes improvements to the transformation of learning and play spaces, the work represents both respect for our heritage and a strong investment in the future of our pupils. Across both Durham School and Chorister School, a wide programme of essential checks, and improvements have been carried out, ensuring it is welcoming and well cared for. Extensive work has taken place, ensuring that facilities remain efficient and ready for the demands of a busy school year. At Chorister School, pupils will return to bright and modern new classrooms, with the former DT room completely transformed into a stylish dining hall. The French Room has been refreshed with new carpets, decoration and lighting, while the Chorister Kitchen has been carefully serviced and updated and continues to provide high quality facilities at the heart of daily school life. For our youngest pupils, the Secret Garden has been given new life. Fresh paving, a central soft fall play area with a monkey climbing frame, and the addition of a sparkling water feature and sand pit have created a truly magical space. Restored benches, sheds and gates complete this hidden gem. Durham School has also benefited from significant works. Major roofing, masonry and structural restoration projects across Big School, the Library and Languages have combined traditional stonemasonry with modern reinforcement, protecting these much-loved buildings for generations to come. As part of our commitment to sustainability by reducing our energy use, our LED lighting programme roll out has commenced across the Foundation, something our pupil led Eco Club has a keen focus on. Our language classroom has been fully revitalised with new rooves, suspended ceilings, and decoration, creating a bright, modern space ready for teaching. Our grounds have also seen careful attention. Cricket pitches at Durham and Palmers Close have been renovated to first-class standard, the Astroturf has been deep cleaned, decompacted and re-marked in preparation for the winter season, and new picnic benches and seating areas have been introduced. These improvements sit alongside the ongoing care and maintenance of our pitches, ensuring that sport and outdoor life remain at the heart of the Foundation.

As part of this wider programme of improvement, we must now undertake essential boundary wall repairs along Quarryheads Lane – the road adjacent to the School site. These works commenced on Tuesday, 19th August, and are expected to last for approximately seven weeks. To facilitate the work safely, temporary traffic lights have been installed, with one lane of Quarryheads Lane closed for the duration. While this is necessary to complete the repairs, we recognise it will cause some disruption to school access and traffic flow, particularly around the start of term. To ease congestion during this period, Potters Bank Field (see attached map) will be opened temporarily for both staff parking and pupil drop off during fair weather. Clear signage will be provided, and a member of staff will be present during the first few days of term to assist with directions and flow. The entrance gate will also serve as the exit, so it will be important to keep this area clear at all times. If the weather turns wet, we may need to suspend use of the field to protect the playing area, and we will communicate alternative arrangements where possible. By starting the work in August, we have been able to reduce the impact on the School community by around two weeks. However, I appreciate that the timing, coinciding with the start of term, is far from ideal. This is part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining and improving our historic estate for the benefit of all pupils and staff. An added benefit of the wall repair project will be improved drainage for the Playground pitches. Thank you for your patience and cooperation while we carry out this essential work; your support will help us to minimise disruption for everyone.

Yours sincerely, Dr. M. Alderson
