“She sits at home with the lights out, seeing life in different colors” Unpredictable, 5 Seconds of Summer

I was particularly excited for this project when we were first introduced to it, because it dealt with song lyrics, and interpreting them. I chose the song Unpredictable, by 5 Seconds of Summer. My sketches didn’t translate well onto the computer, so I decided to start from scratch with a new idea. The words “she sits at home with the lights out” made me think of dark, vulnerable, but with the capacity for having many ideas. This led me to the next lyric, “seeing life in different colors,” which gave me my idea for my project. I decided to start with a dark object, and create a crazy story out of it.

In the process of making my graphic representation, I learned a lot about what each stroke does to the final product, how the width and intricateness of each shape really does affect the overall product. My radial expanded circle began with a lightning bolt, lined on either side by various sharp shapes. It reminds me of an undersea forest, or some type of big explosion.

Color

I had a lot of fun doing this project. I liked the freedom of using color in a project for the first time. Learning about how to accurately use a color wheel was fun and interesting. Once I got some inspiration from the people around me and how they were using gradients and shapes for their mandalas, I began experimenting on my own. I found new ways to use the gradients, and I loved making the analogous mandala the most because there was a little freedom in the colors you could use, and they always meshed really well together. The monochromatic mandala was a little harder to make because it required many gradients of the same tints and shades, so it required a little more creativity. I finally decided to make it green, with tints and shades like a plant has. I had a lot of fun exploring the possibilities of making mandalas, and they are really really fun to make. Typography is the art of designing with letters. Each different type creates an effect and has an influence on the viewer. The Beverly Way poster illustrates this. The word passion expressed in plain black font holds so much potential. The meaning of passion mixed with the possibilities that type offers allows for the creation of something incredible.

When I first began my study of Tessellations with the MC Escher research, I honestly did not understand the concept and I thought it was kind of boring. But as I began to experiment with the different possibilities within the world of tessellations, I found just how fun and captivating they can be.

tessellations tessellations tessellations I experimented with patterns and different shapes within the tessellations, sort of using expanded square concepts. One of the only problems I encountered while doing this was figuring out which way to flip my shapes so it would look the best, and also what would work and what wouldn’t as far as shapes inside the tessellations goes.

I liked playing with how to design a logo that is not only simple and easy on the eyes but powerful and gets the point across accurately. I realized that making logos in the industrial and advertising world is an extremely intricate process that requires a lot of insight and skill. In the beginning of making my logos, I played around with the fact that my initials are the same letter, S. I played with intertwining the S’s. I thought it would be too simple with just the two letters, so I added ribbon-like additions to the letters to connect both sides to each other.

Collage

I began with just editing each of the pictures individually. I sent myself all the pictures I loved from my iPhoto on my computer at home. I began playing with the saturation and effects of the Photoshop tutorials. I had fun seeing all the different effects possible on Photoshop. However, when it came time to actually create the collage, I had a really difficult time figuring out where I wanted to go with my design. I’m not sure whether it was because I was so used to working in Illustrator that when I started using Photoshop I had trouble finding my creativity. So, I went with a simple collage mixed of all of my favorite things. I added a quote I really liked from Audrey Hepburn and arranged my photos, enlarging some that I liked more than others, which I made smaller.

Photoshop In the beginning, I really liked picking up the colors and creating each little section of the picture with the different brushes, however as the project went on, it became a little bit overbearing to get each piece the correct color and click so many times to create a dark enough color. I liked the fact that I could just put in headphones and get to work, it was very calming. I used a picture from Photobooth and made my brushes somewhat similar, but I made a flower-looking one just for my hair, because my hair is really curly, so I used that brush to give my hair that kind of texture. I used a more simple brush for my skin and a simple brush for my glasses and my shirt. I blurred the background with the Art History Brush tool.

This project was interesting to me because this year is my first year living in Beverly Hills. So, what I decided to do was put together an image featuring everything I had previously thought about the city. It is a representation of the reputation of the city as well as my perception of it. Before I moved here, I saw the city as super expensive, rich, and full of stars and movies. Since moving here, I have learned that there is much more to the community than that. I took a modern picture of the Beverly Hills Hotel and put pictures of black and white figures from Beverly Hills history on the lawn of the hotel, to represent the past and the present. I added scattered bags and stacks of money to show that people see Beverly Hills as a city built on money, which it is, as well as culture and education. I added a man with a camera on the roof and characters from the movie Beverly Hills Cop to show the Hollywood-movie side of Beverly Hills and men and women having lunch. I also put in men running the LA Marathon to show the modern application of Beverly.
