Don’t risk it Simple steps to reduce your risk of breast cancer

Get moving Maintain a healthy weight.

Avoid alcohol Alcohol increases the risk of breast cancer. If you do drink, limit yourself to one alcoholic drink per day.

Make that mammogram appointment

Monitor for changes in your breasts

If you are 40 or older, schedule your annual mammogram. You may need to get screened earlier if you have a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors.

his month is the grand opening of Bartram Dental Center just east of I-95 on CR210. The new facility offers a state-of-the-art, full-service dental office with expanded services including implant therapy, adult orthodontics and sleep treatment. Bartram Dental is also home to its very own dental assisting school. The doctors, Dr. Jason Lewis, DDS, FAGD, and Dr. Royce Barlow, DMD, live and work in St. Johns along with their families.

Having been in business since 2005, Bartram Dental Center is all about positivity, compassion, teamwork, and family with the goal of providing patients with the best possible outcome. We had the opportunity to meet the dentists and their team, and tour this beautiful new dental practice right in the heart of northern St. Johns. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE ST. JOHNS? Dr. Lewis: We love the family-friendly spirit that thrives here in northern St Johns County. We see it daily with our patient family and our own family’s life. We are raising our twin sons Carson & Connor here and appreciate the world-class public schools, opportunities for youth sports, and the friendliness of our neighborhoods. We know that we are blessed with an amazing quality of life here. We also did a lot of research before we moved to Jacksonville, and determined that St Johns County had the best school system. Traci was a high school math teacher, so it was important for both of us for her to have a great school district to work in.

WHAT IS YOUR PRACTICE’S MISSION? Dr. Lewis: We made an investment years ago in becoming a “Complete Health” dental practice. There are only a select few Complete Health dentists in the U.S. It involves training, resource commitments etc. For our patients it means we are focused on helping them maintain their very best “complete health” -- not just ideal “dental” health. Patients see our Complete Health mission when we ask about their sleeping habits, diet challenges, new

medications, other health issues. We believe the mouth is the gateway to your overall health. We can help people with issues way beyond having a beautiful and fully-functioning smile. Our mission statement is ‘We create healthy, happy people, one smile at a time’.

Dr. Lewis: We want our patients to relax and have a pleasant dental experience knowing that we will be compassionate while we expertly address their issues. Many patients also benefit from various forms of sedation dentistry. Overall, the most important aspects to me in providing dental care are the patient experience, as well as the team experience. Dr. Lewis: We want our current and "future" patients to know that we are committed to providing state-of-the-art dental services from our brand new facility just east of I-95 at CR-210. Our modern new office is designed with the patient experience in mind. We want you to be relaxed and confident that our dentists are going to successfully treat you. We want our patients to know that Bartram Dental is locally-owned -- our dentists live here and intend to be leading Bartram Dental for years to come. Any member of our team of dental health professionals at Bartram Dental could work anywhere, but they choose to be a part of our very special Practice. Customer service is a lost art in the medical profession, and it is our passion to bring it back.

HOW DO YOU WORK TOGETHER AS A TEAM TO HELP PATIENTS?

Dr. Lewis: Recently, we had a patient referred to us by another patient, who has very severe dental anxiety. We listened to her concerns, and presented clinical and financial options to help with her anxiety about dental treatment. We offered this patient conscious sedation, which is a form of sedation that involves taking a couple of pills. When I followed up with the patient after treatment, she was ‘blown away’ about how wonderful her experience was (she had an extraction and 2 dental implants placed) and she was looking forward to coming to her future dental appointments.

She loved our customer service and overall work environment. We also communicated with her medical doctors to keep them informed of her treatment and how this procedure could impact other areas of her health.

This type of experience is one example of many that fuels our passion as an office to provide exceptional care to our patients.

HOW DO YOU KEEP UP WITH CURRENT DENTAL TECHNOLOGY AND EDUCATION?

Dr. Lewis: Our dentists and other dental health professionals are routinely enrolled in training classes and coursework to make certain we are providing our patients with the latest advances in Dentistry. It's part of who we are at Bartram Dental to fully embrace modern technology especially when it reduces patient discomfort and dramatically improves patient outcomes. We also make sure we are up to date for our assisting school. We are very proud of the men and women that have graduated our Florida Department of Education approved program. We are honored that they have chosen us as a resource to better their lives and the lives of their future patients.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BEST NEW TREATMENTS PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT?

Dr. Lewis: Our newest laser technology allows us to treat cavities and other minor procedures without anesthesia. We also have 3D X-ray technology that gives us information about the patient’s airway. Speaking of airway, our laser technology will also eliminate snoring by treating

the palate area. This can be done without anesthesia as well. That is life changing!

WHAT ARE SOME SPECIAL FEATURES YOU OFFER PATIENTS AT YOUR OFFICE TO MAKE THEIR EXPERIENCE ENJOYABLE?

Dr. Lewis: Starbucks only wishes their coffee was as good as what we offer (haha). In the mornings, we make freshly baked Otis Spunkmeyer cookies to give to our patients as they leave (there’s no job security there!).

During treatment, the patient has the option to watch one of their favorite shows on Netflix, Disney+ or Hulu. We also offer warm, scented towels as a finishing touch to your visit with us. Lastly, we have a beverage bar that includes coffee, water, and Gatorade. You may just want to sit next to a fireplace and drink a nice cup of coffee or tea in one of our cozy sofas and relax as well!

HOW DO YOU HELP PEOPLE WHO ARE EMBARRASSED BY THEIR SMILES?

Dr. Lewis: Our dentists will work with you to develop a “realistic” plan that will get you the beautiful and fully-functioning smile that you deserve.

We will make sure you understand every step of the process and we will always be mindful of your budget. We also "listen" to your concerns and goals. We fully appreciate that we are working with you to create a smile that will last a lifetime.

They also enjoy spending time at home and enjoying all the outdoor activities available in Northeast Florida.

Engaging Teens Over the Summer

School is out for the majority of St. Johns County teens and tweens, leaving parents everywhere to wonder: How do I keep my teenagers busy during summer break while I’m at work? For young kids, there’s nothing more enticing than summer vacation: two-plus months free from school with playdates, pool days and summer camp. But for parents of older kids, the summer months can be a source of anxiety. Instead of fretting about summer, make this break the best ever for your teenager. The next few months are the perfect time to help your teen find their true passion or at least try out a new hobby or two on their journey to adulthood.

CONSIDER THESE FINDINGS:

•Teens who engage in service are 50 percent less likely to engage in risky behavior.

1. SUMMER CHANGEMAKER:

A summer job at the First Coast YMCA can set your teen on a journey toward a life-long career.

Just ask our president and CEO Eric Mann. He started as a YMCA camp counselor in North Carolina and worked his way up through various positions and Y branches across the country to his current role as president and CEO.

We are actively hiring teenagers starting at ages 16 to be summer day camp counselors at one of our 23 sites across the First Coast, in addition to counselors for our overnight resident camp at Camp Immokalee and teens to help out in our KidZone program at local branches.

Each week at camp, your teen can help campers Learn, Explore, Accept and Play as they discover new skills, build self-confidence and feel a sense of achievement and belonging. As a camp counselor, your teen will learn valuable skills such as communication, problem-solving, flexibility and confidence, all of which are key factors in the workplace!

2. LIFEGUARD ON DUTY:

Safety around water is one of the First Coast YMCA’s most important community missions as we try and keep kids and adults safe around all bodies of water. One of the best summer jobs you can have in Florida is being a lifeguard and there is no better place for your teen to get

certified than the YMCA. Lifeguards are trained in numerous skills such as first aid, CPR and AED. Your teen will take this knowledge with them and know how to react during an emergency. More so, lifeguarding offers flexible hours, a built-in summer job for life, the opportunity to form new friendships, responsibility and is a great resume booster.

3. ENROLL IN TEEN LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS:

This summer, the First Coast YMCA is also offering teens ages 12-15 the opportunity to participate in several Teen Summer Leadership Camps to broaden their skill sets. From June 14-August 6, teenagers can join their peers at the YMCA at Nocatee and YMCA at the Flagler Health+ Village in St. Johns County in this fun program to earn 60 community service hours, while learning about career readiness and project management. They will also be mentored by YMCA leadership staff. While at camp, teens can also train and earn their junior lifeguard certifications, CPR/First Aid certifications and sports official certifications for free! Baptist Medical Center South earns highest mark for patient safety The Leapfrog Group awards Baptist South an A-rating for dedication to providing safe, quality patient care.

aptist Medical Center South received an ‘A’ rating in the spring 2021 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, a national distinction recognizing achievements in providing the safest health care for patients.

“To receive an ‘A’ patient safety rating shows our consistent and unwavering approach to making sure our patients receive the safest, highest quality care in all situations,” said Hospital President Nicole Thomas, FACHE. “Our dedicated team members and physicians make safety their No. 1 priority each and every day.”

Baptist Nassau, Baptist Beaches and Baptist Jacksonville also received ‘A’ safety ratings.

“Our health care teams are committed to constant monitoring and improving our patient safety standards,” said Elizabeth Ransom, MD, FACS, executive vice president and chief physician executive for Baptist Health. “Safety is ingrained in our culture through collaboration and open communication – which are vital in achieving the highest quality standards in our hospitals.”

Baptist South’s safety and quality protocols have been further enhanced since the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis through a number of additional measures. Separate respiratory care units for COVID-19 patients, designated staff and equipment for COVID-19 rooms, and the use of advanced UV technology for decontamination are among the many safety reinforcements the health system has implemented.

“An ‘A’ safety grade is an elite designation that your community should be proud of,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “The past year has been extraordinarily difficult for hospitals, but Baptist Health shows us it is possible to keep a laser focus on patients and their

Developed under the guidance of a national expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,700 U.S. acutecare hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public.

The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization committed to health care quality and safety. The Safety Grade is a letter grade assigned to all general hospitals across the country and updated every six months, assessing how well the hospital prevents medical errors and other harms to patients.
