She was the quintessential free spirit, wise woman and
talented artist, and she was my high school art teacher, Ms. Dodge. Her classroom, with paint, charcoal, canvas, drawing paper, clay and a bank of large windows for light was the perfect place for a rebellious teen and where I spent most of my high school years. Her room had a calming effect, I remember she always had music playing and would allow students to choose the album (usually Led Zeppelin or The Grateful Dead). She offered her young artists honest yet gentle encouragement to nurture our craft. At the time, I was not aware of why I enjoyed her energy so much but looking back, I recognize she valued us and there was a mutual respect that existed. There were few restraints as in other classrooms, like asking to use the bathroom or to get up out of one’s seat. We knew what was expected of us and it was up to us to accomplish our projects within a given time and do our best. Ms. Dodge later left teaching and is now a successful artist in New York but I will forever be grateful for experiencing her style of instruction and for her acceptance of the free spirit in me. The visual artist reflects the world through images that require freedom of self-
expression. The arts rely on those who view and appreciate art to interpret its meaning for themselves. Stunning landscapes like the cover image of the Castillo by Robert Stebleton are examples of beauty and perception that draw us in and inspire our imaginations.

ebecca Trimble is an accomplished fine artist, furniture artist and internationally recognized art teacher who has recently opened Urban Designs, a shop in Julington Creek. The shop is a wonderland for those looking for beautiful and interesting pieces as well as unique paintings, and other wall art for their homes. Rebecca along with other vendors whose work is available in the store use various painting techniques to re-imagine wood furniture, taking that boring old oak table and transforming it into a stylish art piece with gray legs and a refinished wooden top. There are many pieces already in the shop but Urban Designs will custom-make farm tables or reinvent pieces you have in your home. Rebecca is also the mother of four children and the wife of a Navy Officer. “We have recently moved here from the Pacific Northwest and I have to say I am in love with Florida, but especially this area of St. John’s. I am a huge fan of the weather (yes even in August!) and the people in this area are simply lovely." After their move, Rebecca, who has years of experience in all areas of painting and is the author of a series of art technique books and DVDs called Rebecca's Collections, continued painting furniture and murals, later deciding to open a store front to offer local customers a full spectrum of services. “We also paint kitchen and bathroom cabinets and, as a certified home stager, we offer home staging and design help”. Rebecca uses the artist’s eye when it comes to painting furniture and says her process involves viewing a piece and then imagining how she wants to recreate it with paint. As a well-known landscape artist who teaches painting classes across the US and Canada, Rebecca says she has always been an artist, never with-
out a paint brush in her hand. Her recent passion is for Tuscan inspired landscapes with their vivid colors and beauty. She also enjoys Impressionism art for its color and movement. Her favorite piece is Edvard Munch, The Scream. Rebecca offers painting classes at Urban Design for the experienced and novice alike. Stebleton’s artwork. His paintings have been described as using the brilliance of acrylics with the eloquence of watercolors to achieve a unique view of the artist’s world. Born in Michigan, Stebleton’s early work reflected his Midwestern roots. In 1982, following a workshop on Monhegan Island, Robert moved to Maine. He was hired by the Maine Maritime Museum as Artist-In-Residence and for the next 19 years he studied and painted the coastline and its inhabitants. These paintings captured a rapidly disappearing world of wooden boats and the lifestyle of generations of families that had a connection to the sea.

A smell, a taste, a simple photograph found in an old attic box, or hopefully, an album. Sitting on the couch with your kids, your parents, your loved ones, pouring over the images, telling stories of way back when…THAT’S why. Family connections rule.
EXPLAIN WHAT YOU DO IN 100 WORDS: I guess, in essence, I TRY to (and hopefully succeed) capture who you are, what you’re about, and the memory behind the image taken to the best of my ability. I want you to be on that couch, 40 years from now, laughing about the time Uncle Jimmy passed gas during the wedding party photo, or even tearing up about the last birthday party had for Aunt Marge. Memories matter, and I want to capture them for you.
HOW DO YOU WORK? I’m pretty goofy, and I know it. I can be serious when the moment has to happen, and I’m always professional when it boils down, but the best smiles come from real laughter…and if I have to stand on my head to get that, I will! WHAT’S YOUR BACKGROUND? I come from a pretty artsy family. Mom and dad were hands on artists with wood, glass, fabrics, you name it, they created it. It seems like I’ve always had a camera in my hands from the day I could afford one. I took a few classes back in college (film days, so I’m totally dating myself!), and have just been on a “roll” ever since…lol, pun intended. You’re welcome. (oh, photographer humor).

WHAT HAS BEEN A SEMINAL EXPERIENCE? I decided to make this a business after my mom passed. I suppose the “wake up” moment (where I made a push to have others in front of the camera, AND myself) was going through my mom’s picture box…and there were barely any of her. She never let herself be on camera. You know the drill...”when I’m less heavy”, “when I’m wearing something nice”, “when my hair is done”. Here’s a secret from someone who’s lost someone… those left behind don’t care if you’re having a “fat”
WHAT’S YOUR STRONGEST MEMORY OF YOUR CHILDHOOD? I grew up on a farm with 5 brothers and sisters, so SO MANY MEMORIES! My mom having bread rise on the wood stove, helping daddy by taking off those durn potato bugs in the garden, swimming in the creek, summers at my grandma’s farm…good stuff. WHAT’S YOUR SCARIEST EXPERIENCE? I would say it was while I was shooting at a beautiful swampy pond. I heard an alligator hiss, so I stepped back…right onto a limb going across the path. I rolled my ankle and CRACKED MY CAMERA LENS (yes, that was worse than the ankle roll). WHAT JOBS HAVE YOU DONE OTHER THAN BEING AN ARTIST? I taught preschool for umpteen years, directed and managed a preschool summer camp for same amount of years, and was in the Air Force as well.
HOW HAS YOUR PRACTICE CHANGED OVER TIME: Photography is an evolution as all art is. I started with shooting EVERYTHING, and well…I still shoot everything, don’t I? But I’m better than when I started. :D WHAT WORK DO YOU MOST ENJOYING DOING? I LOVE birth photography. LOVE IT. To see the emotions flying during the eons of waiting in the hospital room from mom, dad, nurses, doctors…and then the moment of birth. BEAUTIFUL, and to be there DURING a new life entering the world? Chokes me up every time. When mom gets to hold that baby the first time? When dad cuts the cord? THOSE are priceless times you NEVER want to forget.
WHAT MEMORABLE RESPONSES HAVE YOU HAD TO YOUR WORK? I watched a photo video I had made of a birth story with the parents. We all held hands, cried, and hugged it out. It was a beautiful, wonderful, real moment that I will hold FOREVER. WHAT FOOD/SONG/DRINK INSPIRE YOU? COFFEE. ALL OF THE COFFEE. WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR WORK? Pretty much EVERYTHING. I love meeting new people, making the new friends that actually winds up happening, the locations I get to go, the events and celebrations taking place, the memories you see happening right in front of you, and knowing you get to be the one helping them remember it for the rest of their lives. ince coming to the First Coast and settling in Jacksonville in 2011, Kaytee Esser has been
non-stop busy. Self-described as an ‘artist first’, Kaytee enjoys painting in a variety of media, be it oil, watercolor, pastel or acrylic. However, her focus in recent years has been oil portraits of ‘classic cars, motorcycles, animals, and people.’ A few years ago, Kaytee and life-long friend Linda Carter began to collaborate on a book called "Classic Car-ma". Published in 2015, and partly inspired by trips with her husband to the Turkey Rod Run held in Daytona, “Classic Car-ma” takes a nostalgic look at

cars driven during different periods of the Twentieth Century and the ways they touched our lives. More recently, Kaytee became involved with Compassionate Families, a Jacksonville based non-profit that assists those in the area who’ve lost loved ones through a violent act. Believing that ‘art starts conversation and can be used as an agent of change’, Kaytee started ‘Portraits for Hope’, a traveling expose that focuses on those under 21 who’ve lost their lives due to violence in Jacksonville. My daughter and I recently attended the cutest (and I mean cutest, y’all!) party at the Studio. The girls, all 2nd graders, were asked to bring their favorite doll. My daughter decided to bring her stuffed Fro-Yo friend from the new Menchie’s on San Jose, which she has been carrying around like a baby, another girl brought a T-Rex named Sue, and there were plenty of Barbies and American Girl Dolls. The girls painted full-size ceramic tea cups and saucers for themselves and miniature ones for their dolls. The staff was helpful and attentive. After the items were painted, the girls enjoyed cupcakes and drinks brought in by the Birthday Girl’s mom, and then opened gifts. There was plenty of room and no rush for everyone to enjoy themselves and the party. It takes several days for the pieces to dry and then be fired in the kiln and returned to partygoers. As a special reminder of the day, the girls all put their fingerprints on a ceramic ornament that will be fired and returned to the Birthday Girl, so she’ll always have a sweet memory of her 7th Birthday. When it came time to leave my daughter was asking me if we would come back soon, and we are…my mom’s 60th Birthday is coming up and we have already booked our session!

by Elizabeth Loeser, B.S. Ed. Is your child prepared to meet his academic potential for the 20162017 school year? The beginning of a new year presents a clean slate. As parents, you want to make sure that your child keeps the slate clean and gets good grades without trouble. But while students often have little or no trouble keeping up with homework or assignments, they still struggle to do well on the tests. Or even though they are completing homework assignments, they are simply failing to turn them in. Often, students are very busy after school with sports or other activities, which causes a shortage of time for students to complete work or study effectively. These situations result in lower than expected grades and can be extremely frustrating for parents. Most of the time the problem stems from poor study skills. One of the biggest disadvantages that bright students face is their ability to understand and comprehend material quickly, with little need to actually study or memorize it. Eventually, usually in high school, they reach a point where their level of education requires them to work harder to comprehend and prepare for tests. For the first time, they are having to use skills of memorization, and multi-level learning, that has never before been necessary. Concepts become more complex and require more in-depth understanding, and the obstacles are too great to overcome alone. A solid study skills program that focuses on several key areas is a good way to assist a struggling student.

A short drive south of Marineland Dolphin Adventure at the St. Johns/
Flagler County line, sits one of northeast Florida’s best contemporary art galleries just a block from the ocean and across the street from a popular Farmers Market.
Ocean Art Gallery, which celebrated its 4th Anniversary last month,
has become the cultural center of Flagler Beach. In its attractive 2000 square foot high-ceiling space, the gallery offers a dynamic display of every medium by over 25 of the top artists from across Florida. Several artists are well-known to residents of St. Johns and Duval counties, including Tom Sadler, Sally C. Evans, RoAnn Elias, Charles Schaefer, and Rachel Lynn Thompson. Each month the gallery selects one of its contributing artists to be its featured artist for the month. September’s featured artist is William Lurcott, a Flagler Beach artist known for his plein air paintings in pastel and oil.
The gallery offers musical performances, art workshops by expe-
rienced artists for beginning or intermediate artists, and BYOB Paint Parties. Presentations about art, conservation, and other topical subjects of interest to residents and visitors are offered regularly. The gallery partners with Gamble Rogers State Park to conduct conservation talks in the gallery and gallery owner Frank Gromling, a well-known conservationist, gives talks about right whales, sea turtles, and other marine life at the park.
One of the most exciting new gallery activities happens at Marineland Dolphin Adventure. Marineland and Ocean Art Gallery teamed up
to create an exciting new program called the Arts & Culture Series, a combination of art-based activities and talks about nature and conservation. Frank Gromling crafted two workshops to teach guests how to paint in acrylic or take better photographs, all focused on the natural setting provided by Marineland. In these three or four hour workshops presented by professional artists, students advance their knowledge and skills to new heights. Snakebites In Dogs
It is summertime and you and your pets are spending a lot more time outdoors enjoying the pleasant weather. Well guess what? You’re not the only creatures enjoying the nice weather. About this time of year veterinarians begin to see dogs and cats come into the hospital for treatment of snakebites. Here are some things that you should know to help keep your pet safe from these slithery creatures There are 50 snake species here in Florida, only 6 of which are venomous. The venomous species include the Copperhead, Cottonmouth, Eastern Diamondback, Canebreak Rattlesnake, Pigmy Rattlesnake and the Coral snake. The first 5 are pit vipers, which have a pit between and slightly below the eye and nostril. Pit vipers also have long movable fangs, a "cat's eye (vertical)" pupil, undivided scales under the tail, and a large triangular-shaped head with a small shiny cap over the nose. The Coral snake is a very different kind of venomous snake, more closely related to Cobras. It has no pits and its body is ringed with black, yellow, and red bands with a black snout. It is helpful to be able to identfy the type of snake that has bitten your pet, however, it is not imperative for getting the proper treatment. Do not attempt to handle a snake or get too close to it in order to identify it. If you can, pay attention to the colors and features or snap a picture with your cell phone. Snake bites are usually found on the pet’s head or neck. The first thing you will see is one, two or several puncture wounds with bleeding, bruising, pain and immediate swelling at the site of the bite. Factors that affect the severity of the bite include the amount of venom injected, the size of the pet and the location of the bite. The severity of the signs does not necessarily reflect the severity of the systemic envenomation. The onset of clinical signs after envenomation may be delayed for several
hours. The systemic signs that may develop include shock, lethargy and weakness, muscle tremors, bleeding problems, nausea, vomiting and neurological signs. There are a number of treatments for snakebites that have fallen out of favor over the years. Here are some things you should NOT do: Do not put any sort of tourniquet on your pet. Do not apply ice. Do not make any cuts into the skin and do not try to suck the poison out. Do not apply a compression bandage to the wound. These treatments can cause harm to your pet or harm to you. One of the most helpful things you can do is to not allow your pet to walk if possible because that distributes the venom. Venomous snakebites are medical emergencies requiring immediate medical attention at your veterinarian’s office. Treatment for rattlesnake and coral snake bites involves supportive treatment including antibiotics, pain medications, iv fluids and administration of the appropriate antivenin. Your veterinarian will want to perform some blood tests to determine the severity of the bite. The bite wounds are clipped and cleaned and the patient is monitored frequently for increased swelling and bleeding times. The pet will need to stay in the hospital for a minimum of 24 hours, but many patients are treated for many days. It is common for more than 1 vial of antivenin to be needed for an individual patient and there is a small risk of a reaction to the antivenin. Approximately 80% of pets survive snake bites if treated quickly. The survival rate is much lower for pets that are left untreated. Immediate aggressive treatment offers the best outcome for your pet so it’s important to have a plan for where you will go to seek medical care during the daytime and after hours.
