Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

Saying Good-bye to Summer Once Again Summer is the best time of year to get out of your comfort zone and experience something different. This year our family traveled to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, a place of unbelievable beauty and majesty. As Floridians my children relished the cool dry air and hiking trails up steep inclines. At times, the scenery seemed surreal it was so different from our own, almost hard to believe it was even the same country.

As awesome as summer travel is, it was good to be home again in beautiful St. Johns County, Florida. That is the funny thing about traveling, it gives us a new appreciation for the stunning beauty we see every day in our own community. Our eyes look upon the vistas anew and we realize how blessed we are to have chosen to live here.

After vacations far away and beach days close to home, I’m ready to return to normalcy and get back in the swing of things, such as creating our August issue filled with helpful information about school and community.

Invo’s New Jacksonville Therapy Centers

Invo Behavior and Therapy recently opened two new Jacksonville children’s therapy centers located at 6859 Belfort Oaks Place and 6196 Lake Gray Boulevard. The therapy centers will help meet Jacksonville’s rapidly growing demand for high-quality therapy for autism and other developmental disorders. According to the Centers for Disease Control, approximately one in every 59 children across the U.S. is diagnosed with autism, a 15% increase from two years earlier.

The centers provide comprehensive outcomes-focused individual and small group therapy in a fun, distraction-free, convenient environment with customized plans to help each child reach his or her full potential. The centers also offer early learners classes to teach children behaviors to succeed in school, as well as social skills groups, life skills groups and parent training.

Invo provides comprehensive in-home and center-based therapy in Tampa, Miami, Northport and Venice. Invo also plans to open two therapy centers in Tampa and expand services throughout Florida.

St. Johns County Schools Continue to Shine in School Performance

chool grades released by the Florida Department of Education show that the St. Johns County School District continues to be a top performing district in the state and is one of only two that has consistently remained an “A” rated district. St. Johns County had 31 “A” schools, seven “B” schools, one “C” school and one “D” school.

Fourteen elementary schools, four middle schools, all six of the district’s K-8 academies, five high schools, St. Johns Virtual Franchise and St. Johns Virtual Instructional Program all received a grade of “A” this year.

“Our students have benefitted from the hard work and dedication of our teachers, and I am extremely proud of their efforts,” said Superintendent Tim Forson. “Our school grades reaffirm that our focus and resources are applied to help our students succeed. They also provide the opportunity for us to hone in on areas and schools that may need additional support in the coming year.”

The elementary schools receiving an “A” are Cunningham Creek Elementary, Durbin Creek Elementary, W.D. Hartley Elementary, Hickory Creek Elementary, R.B. Hunt Elementary, Julington Creek Elementary, Ketterlinus Elementary, Ocean Palms Elementary, Osceola Elementary, Palencia Elementary, Picolata Crossing Elementary, PVPV/Rawlings Elementary, Timberlin Creek Elementary and Wards Creek Elementary.

The middle schools with an “A” are Fruit Cove, Alice B. Landrum, Pacetti Bay and Switzerland Point. Freedom Crossing, Mill Creek, Liberty Pines, Patriot Oaks, Valley Ridge, Mill Creek, Freedom Crossing and Palm Valley academies received an “A” as did Bartram Trail, Creekside, Allen D. Nease, Ponte Vedra and St. Augustine high schools. St. Johns Virtual School also received an “A”.

Otis A. Mason Elementary, R.J. Murray Middle, St. Augustine Public Montessori, Gamble Rogers Middle, Sebastian Middle, Pedro Menendez High and South Woods Elementary schools received a “B” this year. John A. Crookshank Elementary School received a “C”, and St. Johns Technical High School received a Maintaining rating this year. The Webster School received a “D”.

What made you want to become a primary care physician?

I wanted to help people live healthier lives, and primary care physicians are in a perfect position to do that. Primary care physicians are often the first to recognize changes that could lead to serious health conditions, like heart disease, diabetes or stroke. Our job is to catch potential health hazards early to prevent chronic illness down the road.

What’s your patient care philosophy?

I like to develop personal relationships and build trust with my patients so we can work together to reach their personal health goals. I stress the importance of regular health screenings and educate patients about how their lifestyle choices have a direct impact on their health. Some need encouragement and I consider myself their health partner, providing that encouragement and guidance along the way. It’s rewarding to walk the journey with my patients and see their health improve.

How do you help patients make healthy lifestyle changes?

Everyone wants to be healthy. But I know it’s hard to make big lifestyle changes all at once. I recommend making just one small change first and then building on that. For example, if a patient is struggling with their weight, we work together on solutions that fit into their busy life. Maybe it’s walking 15 minutes twice a day as a start. It’s important to get the patient’s buy in, so they are more likely to be successful.

What do you like about living in St. Johns County?

I have lived here since 2006 and I have seen it grow tremendously. I like that we still have nature preserves, like Guana State Park, where my family and I can enjoy the outdoors. I also love being close to beach and walking on weekend mornings as the waves roll in and out. It’s part of my own self-care.

taging not only shows the potential buyer the qualities of the home but also helps them envision themselves living there.

Statistics show that staging a home sells for more than the asking price with less days on the market.

According to International Association for Home Staging Professionals, un-staged homes were on the market for 84.6 days versus only 10.3 days after being staged, and 37% sold above list price.

Some professional stagers have several options to help one prepare their home for sale.

One would be for them to do everything from start to finish using the home owners furniture/accessories, or by using their own inventory. Some more budget-friendly options would be for them to do a ‘key enhancement feature’ using just accessories to highlight certain areas. Another option would be for the staging professional to do a walk-through and provide a written report for the home owner to follow.

Here are a few tips to help you get started‌ Curb appeal - People will not take the time to come look inside if the outside is untidy. Trim bushes; add some color with plants/flowers;

replace the front door; power-wash the walkways; and add a chair or bench to make it look inviting; if necessary, paint the exterior.

Declutter and depersonalize - You may be attached to all the little nik-naks in your home but you are not selling them with your home - you are showcasing the home and its qualities, so pack away your collections and majority of family photos; take down curtains, especially if you have a view; remove excess furniture to make it feel more open and spacious.

Repair & update - Show that the house has been taken care of. Replace cracked tile and leaky faucets; update light fixtures; fill holes and add a fresh coat of (neutral) paint; update appliances if necessary.

Last but not least - Clean! I recommend hiring a professional to clean from top to bottom, including grout and windows. Beat the competition. Be prepared!

St. Johns County

On behalf of the St. Johns County School District, it is an honor to serve your children and families. Our mission as a school district is to inspire good character and a passion for lifelong learning in all students, creating educated and caring contributors to the world. Through the dedication and caring nature of teachers, administrators, and support staff, our students are able to achieve high standards in academics, sports and extracurricular activities. Having remarkable students and parents has also helped us remain a high performing school district. Statewide, our students score exceptionally well, earning the top scores in many reporting categories. Students in grade 3-10 earned the top scores in the state in reading. In math, students in grade 3-6 earned the highest scores. Additionally, our students tied for first in the state on the

Algebra End-of-Course Exam. Students in grades 5 and 8 earned the top scores in science. Moreover, in 2018, our district graduation rate was 93.3 percent, which is above the state average of 86.1 percent. School grades released by the Florida Department of Education last month show that we continue to be a top preforming district in the state and one of two that has consistently remained an “A� rated district.

Throughout the summer, our administrative teams have been preparing for an incredible school year for your children. We continue to hire highly qualified personnel to provide students with an exceptional educational experience. It is our goal to ensure that all students graduate, prepared with 21st century skills to compete in the constantly changing world of digital and social environments.

This school year we will continue to expand our safety initiatives to ensure that we provide a safe, secure, and dynamic learning environment for our children. If you have not already, I encourage you to download the FortifyFL App. This app allows the user to notify school personnel and law enforcement to provide a description of any threat, share pics and videos and optionally submit contact information. We will have local law enforcement and/or armed security personnel at each school site offering increased security coverage. In addition, we will provide ongoing mental health support for our students through specialized training, programs and resources.

This year, we will be piloting an evidence-based program, Sources of Strength (SOS), at our high schools. SOS is a best practice youth suicide prevention project designed to harness the power of peer social networks to change unhealthy norms and culture, ultimately preventing suicide, bullying, and substance abuse. As a district, we are committed to making resources available to students and families who need assistance.

espite what most people in St. Johns County are telling themselves, the new school year is right around the corner, swooping in to disrupt their beach days, family vacations, and sleep schedules. Everyone has their own strong opinions on going back to school, but depending on what position you’re in, these perspectives can vary.

For instance, Molly is going into 3rd grade at Liberty Pines Academy. When asked her opinion on going back, she claims, “There’s nothing I’m not looking forward to, I’m excited about it all.” Molly is very optimistic for the upcoming school year, and is doing everything she can to prepare for it. She knows exactly what needs to be done to prepare, such as finishing her summer reading book and buying all necessary school supplies. According to Molly, she cannot wait for the school year to start!

Sofia is a rising 8th grader at Switzerland Point Middle School. She says, “This being my 8th grade year, I am looking forward to the fun field trips and dances.” As an 8th grader, Sophia will be in her last year of middle school, and she is thrilled that this means she has a year of exciting events ahead of her.

“However,” she explains, “I am not looking forward to waking up early and the mounds of homework that awaits me when school starts.” With great privilege comes great responsibility, and Sophia knows 8th grade will challenge her academically.

Regardless, she is still optimistic about the upcoming year, and is still having a blast these last few days of summer! Sophia adds, “…before that 5:30am wake-up call on August 12th, I have one more fun-filled weekend with my family.”

Sydney is a going into her senior year at Creekside High School. This is both scary and exciting, as she works to keep her grades up, prepare for college, and make the most out of her last year of high school. Sydney writes, “I feel excited and prepared for senior year, but it’s also a little bittersweet. It’s the end of an era, and while I’m excited for a new beginning at college I’m sad to leave behind the school, dance team, and dance studio I’ve been a part of for years.” Keeping up with six AP classes and an officer position on the dance team will not be easy for Sydney, but she knows that her grades, activities, and the relationships she forms in her senior year will set the stage for success after high school.

Mrs. Rakov teaches art classes at Creekside High School, including AP Art History. As the summer comes to an end, she begins preparing material to Molly help her teach her students in the fastapproaching school year. For instance,

she explains, “If my students last year struggled on a particular topic, then I spend time working on that unit and trying to find more strategies to help them be more successful this year.” Teachers like Mrs. Rakov are constantly trying to improve and expand upon their methods of teaching to ensure that every student receives the best opportunity possible to learn and grow. Teachers go out of their way to make sure this learnSidney ing occurs, even spending their own resources. Mrs. Rakov says, “Like every teacher I know, I will spend hours of my time and lots of money out of pocket getting my classroom ready.” This can be tough, as teachers are only human. “Coming back to school often means stress and illnesses and I will often end up sick the first month of school,” Mrs. Rakov explains. In the face of this, she adds, "I love the anticipation of the upcoming year and the excitement that comes with my new classes, new curriculum, and new students.”

As a parent, the new year can be just as exasperating as it would be to the people actually attending school. Moms, Dads, and any other guardians wake up early, make lunch, give rides, help with homework, and do anything else they need to support their student. Ali, a parent of a rising senior and rising sophomore at Bartram Trail High School, explains that the start of the year “disrupts any routine I might have (or lack thereof).”

Ali also explains that, with a rising senior, a lot of emotions will occur for her at the start of the school year. She remembers when her kids were going into Kindergarten and the PTO of Timberlin Creek Elementary would host an event called “Tissues and Tea.”

The parents of new Kindergarteners were given breakfast and able to socialize. She remembers that there were always two sides of the room: one for parents who were happy that their kids were going off to school and ones that were sad.

Ali says, “I could never choose between sides. I was happy my kids were growing up and becoming their own person, but I was sad because I had this feeling of loss. That’s exactly how I feel right now, watching my baby grow up and experience her senior year of high school.”

Though there are many conflicting perspectives, the overall attitude towards the start of the school year is that it is both scary and exciting. People in all walks of life are curious to discover what the next nine months has in store for them.

Whatever adventure awaits, whether it be a challenging class, a school dance, or an amazing opportunity they never would have dreamed of, no one can deny that the school year is coming faster than they think.

New YMCA opens at Flagler Health+ Village at Murabella

T

he Northwest St. Johns community is getting healthier in spirit, mind and body at the new YMCA at Flagler Health+ Village, which opened its doors to the community on July 2.

Together, the Y and Flagler Health+ are providing area residents with one-stop access to a wide spectrum of health and wellness services for children, adults and families.

“At the Y, we are committed to strengthening community by transforming lives through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. But we can’t do it alone. Partnerships with organizations like Flagler Health+ are critical,” said Eric K. Mann, President and CEO of the YMCA of Florida’s First Coast. “We know this new location will have a critical impact on the growing Northwest St. Johns County community for generations to come.”

Among the services currently available are an array of group exercise classes, personal training, senior fitness programs including SilverSneakers and Renew Active, diabetes prevention programs, weight loss programs and nutrition services. Additional fitness, prevention and educational opportunities will also become available as community needs are discovered.

SAiRA Kicks Off A Weeklong St. Augustine Culinary Celebration in October by Bridget L. Van Landingham

SAiRA’s Food & Wine Festival provides guests opportunities to explore dishes from SAiRA member restaurants plus over 100 wines.

S

t. Augustine Independent Restaurant Association (SAiRA) kicks off two culinary events in October.

First, SAiRA’s Food and Wine Festival on October 6, 2019. Followed by St. Augustine’s Restaurant Week the week of October 7 - 13, 2019, giving diners opportunities to enjoy specially-prepared dishes from many of the city’s popular restaurants.

A dozen independently-owned restaurants throughout St. Augustine will present special lunch and dinner menu experiences for Restaurant Week.

2019 marks the fourth year of this annual culinary event when diners can try a variety of cuisines and flavors prepared by local chefs at SAiRA member restaurants.

Lunch menu experiences are $20. Dinner menu experiences are $35. Participants can pick up a Restaurant Week Passport at any SAiRA member establishment listed at StAugustineRestaurants.com/RestaurantWeek. Diners who receive passport stamps from four different restaurants throughout the week will get $25 off at a fifth SAiRA member restaurant.

St. Augustine’s Restaurant Week immediately follows SAiRA’s Food and Wine Festival held on October 6 at the River House on 179 Marine Street. Guests to the event can feast on foods from locally-owned restaurants and sample over 100 wines. This year, the event will feature a VIP-only reception providing early access, featured dishes, and champagne reception.

2019 marks the 10th year SAiRA has hosted the Food and Wine Festival, which benefits the Boys and Girls Club of Northeast Florida. Ticket information can be found at StAugustineRestaurants.com/ food-winefestival.

“Between the two events, it’s a weeklong culinary celebration of St. Augustine’s best local restau-

rants. Both events are exciting opportunities for people to sample the creative, delicious and flavorful foods available at SAiRA member restaurants,” said Jeremy Ticehurst, President of SAiRA.

SAiRA membership is made up of independently-owned restaurants located in St. Augustine. The association’s mission includes building relationships through the sharing of information and supporting local independent restaurants.

Member restaurants work side by side to help each other exceed the expectations of their guests and advance St. Augustine's unique culinary and cultural diversity. Together, they leverage resources and hospitality to financially and physically support organizations throughout the St. Augustine community. Additionally, members support the SAiRA Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to helping workers within the hospitality industry in times of extreme need and to promote hospitality-based education.

When is it Time to Retire Your Old AC?

E

very homeowner dreads the day when their AC goes out.

You’re sweating or freezing; who do you call, how long will it take, will they be able to fix it? The issue could be simple, and easily repaired. Or, it could be an expensive waste of your money. What should you do?

First, ask, are you happy with the comfort? Are the temperatures even, humidity comfortable, air clean? How are your utility bills? Those are minimum criteria.

Next, how old is your system? Energy Star says any system’s over 10-years old is a candidate for upgrade. Average life of an A/C is 10-12 years, even less in FL!

Repair vs Replace

This can be a difficult decision, requiring an investment into your home to keep life humming along uninterrupted. Anything can be repaired, and 80% of the time a repair is all that’s needed. It’s the other 20% that’s tricky. How do you make a smart decision? Here are a few factors to guide you:

Age

Cost of the Repairs

There is a simple formula to help make the initial determination of whether it makes more sense to repair or replace.

If you make the following calculation, and it is more than the average cost of replacement, typically $5000-7000 for a basic system, replacement is recommended.

Repair Cost X Age of System > $5000 (replace) Repair Cost X Age of System < $5000 (repair)

Efficiency

Anything with an efficiency rating less than 13-SEER is a good candidate for upgrade, depending on the other factors.

Your AC is a mechanical system, and over time it starts to wear down. As is wears down, efficiency starts to decrease a little more every season. New systems can operate at almost TWICE as efficient as old ones!

Repair Frequency

12-years is the magic number. Breakdowns get more frequent on older systems, and costs start piling up to the point where you might actually be “paying for a new system” but just not getting one! Over 15-years, you’ve entered the Danger-Zone.

Typical HVAC systems require some type of repair every 3-years+/-. If your system has experienced more than three repairs in 10-years, it could be time to consider an upgrade. As your system ages, the frequency of repairs (and repair costs) are only going to increase.

Extent of Problems

Sizing

Minor issues should be repaired; clogged drains, minor electrical problems, simple control upgrades, capacitors, topping off refrigerant charge, etc. Major issues should raise a flag to consider replacement as the smarter alternative; coil replacements, blower or condenser fan motors, compressors, refrigerant leaks, etc. You want to avoid throwing good money after bad.

If your system doesn’t work as well as it once did, it might be time for a replacement. Similar to efficiency, as your system wears down, capacity will decrease a little every year, so it’s just not able to keep up anymore. Additionally, if your system is UNDER or OVER sized, upgrading is smart decision.

A Little Perspective

If your AC were a car, you could potentially drive 8760-hours annually. Cut that in half, that’s still 4380-hours of run time. At 55-mph, you’d drive (“run”) over 240,000 miles a year! That’s 10-trips AROUND THE WORLD every year.

We upgrade our cars every 4-5 years, and I’m guessing it’s way before anywhere close to a QUARTER OF A MILLION miles. Even at the 10-year mark, your HVAC system has gone enough “miles” to go to moon and back five times!

GRAIN-FREE AND EXOTIC-INGREDIENT DIETS

A

s pet owners, we always want what is best for our pets, and most of us understand that good nutrition is paramount for a healthy pet. The pet food industry is very competitive; marketing is clever and powerful, and with tools like the internet at our fingertips, information and “research,” is available to us 24/7. But as human food trends change, the pet food industry has also changed- and in some cases, initiated fads that are completely unsupported by veterinary nutritional science.

One such fad is the grain-free diet. As of late, the news has been widely reporting the FDA’s ongoing investigation of a possible link between a type of canine heart disease and grain-free, or exotic-ingredient boutique diets. Canine Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a type of heart disease caused by a weakened heart muscle that cannot pump blood efficiently, causing heart enlargement, and eventually heart failure. There are certain breeds long known to have a genetic predisposition to DCM: Dobermans, Great Danes, St. Bernards, Boxers, and Cocker Spaniels. But over the last year or so, veterinary cardiologists have seen an alarming spike in cases associated with mix breed dogs, and other dogs typically not known to be prone to the disease, (>500 cases!). Based on the information compiled by veterinary cardiologists across the country, approximately 90% of these dogs were being fed a grain-free diet. One potential cause they are investigating is that some grain-free diets may not be able provide the proper nutrients needed for a dog’s body to make the amino acid Taurine, which is essential for cardiac health. However, they are still doing extensive research and Taurine deficiency is not evident in all of the cases, although many dogs in the study who are supplemented with Taurine are recovering from DCM.

Grain-free diets initially rose to popularity presumably because people have been changing their diets: low-carb, gluten-free, vegan, etc. We are told it’s healthier for us, and there is little argument to that. But pet owners are falling victim to marketing ploys that portray exotic ingredients as being

healthier or more natural than typical ingredients.

Grains are often misreported as “fillers with no nutritional value,” and on the contrary, grains contain proteins, vitamins, and minerals that are essential to canine health. Many dog owners also hold a misconception that food allergies are from grains; on the contrary, primary protein sources are more often the culprit. It’s important to understand that true food allergies in dogs are rare (<1% of dogs) and require extensive testing to truly diagnose.

In Grain-Free diets, grains (corn, oats, quinoa, rice, barley, and wheat) are often replaced with another carbohydrate source, like potatoes, or legumes like green peas, chick peas, and lentils. In the cases the FDA is investigating, legumes are the major grain substitute in 93% of the diets in question.

There are also exotic proteins in question, like kangaroo or lamb. Different protein sources have different nutrient profiles, and different digestibility. The metabolism of taurine is different in a lamb-based diet than that of a chicken-based diet; also, increased dietary fiber affects the metabolism of taurine as well.

All nutrients need to be bioavailable, meaning they need to be in a form the pet can utilize, and that is not always the case with these boutique diets.

So what if you are feeding your pet a grain-free diet?

When doing your own research be cautious when consulting Food Rating websites and internet articles; many are based on opinion and have no true veterinary scientific info. The best option is to seek the advice of your veterinarian; they have the best understanding of what is healthy for your pet, and if there is testing or dietary changes that should occur. Your veterinarian can help you choose a food that comes from a manufacturer known for quality and nutritional expertise, not clever marketing – remember, pets require nutrients, not ingredients!
