Summer is a critical out-of-school time when children benefit from enriched learning and unique adventures. That’s why YMCA camps offer activities that engage both the body and mind. Our goals are to eliminate summer learning loss, nurture self-confidence and sound values, and encourage healthy lifestyle habits. Plus, children make new friends along the way. Campers identified as non-swimmers or poor swimmers receive free lessons throughout the summer. The Y also offers financial assistance to ensure that all kids get the chance to experience camp. W
ith the opening of its own studio and classroom space, Apex Theatre Studio is thrilled to announce its first weekly day camp experiences. “This year the studio is offering lots of different kinds of experiences for students,” stated Ian Mairs, the studio’s founder and director. “The summer is a great time to explore and dream. Having as many different kinds of classes from improv to stage combat to our comic book workshops allows the student to experiment and explore with different formats and people, “ added Mairs. “We want to students to have that great sensation you feel when you get up on a summer morning, hop on your bike and decide to travel down a trail you have never experienced before.” “Since our first project in 2014, we’ve been lucky to partner with some wonderful hosting facilities. But nothing beats having your own dedicated space. We want students who are interested in the performing arts to have a space to gather, learn and make important connections,” added Mairs. “I can remember the moment in high school when I felt like I found my pack: the people who understood my enthusiasm for the theater. It was in a summer theater intensive the county used to have called the Summer Musical.” Acting and Improvisation teacher Jason Nettle echoed those sentiments: “At our high school, the drama teacher was married to the choral teacher so we ended up having a very strong program and community of young artists. I got married two years ago and my groomsmen were all guys I met doing at shows during that time. “ What started out as a three week intensive in the summer of 2014 for ten advanced level high school age performers who created production of Godspell in the fellowship hall at St. John’s Cathedral has grown into an exciting enterprise which offers year round programming for students ages 10-21. It has also attracted an impressive teaching faculty, most of whom hold a Master’s Degree in their area of expertise. “Teaching has made me such a better artist, I get so much from the students I work with because they make we want to apply all the things we explore to my own work. Because of the excitement generated in the classroom, I am hungry to get back onstage,” remarked Leah Page, acting and musical theatre instructor. In addition to the studio, Apex Theatre Studio will be partnering with the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall to offer a series of signature theatrical events throughout the year which will connect the ever expanding communities in Ponte Vedra, Nocatee and north Saint Augustine. “We are excited to host both of the summer offerings at the concert hall,” remarked Ryan Murphy, general manager of the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall. “Ian has consistently demonstrated his commitment to building community and energizing performance venues in the area. He and I both firmly believe that this area has the potential to become a frequent destination for world class artists and top notch students,” Murphy added. Classes begin May 30th and run thru August 5th. For further information go to apextheatrejax.com

It seems like the next article comes just in the nick of time. I am thankful but… You will see why. After earning the gray hair I have I no longer look ahead at the schedule the night before. This day was one where I wished I had. There was an appointment for surgery that I saw first thing in the morning yesterday. It was a “dental cleaning with an ablation.” An ablation can mean several things. After thinking about it for a minute I realized I was facing an enemy that I truly detest, feline oral stomatitis. This disease is a devastating disease where the mouth of a cat becomes swollen, reddened at the gums around the teeth and has pus around the teeth. It can lead to oral bleeding, weight loss, loss of appetite and severe lethargy for the cat. My heart truly feels for these kitties. It is a disease that we were not taught about in veterinary school. In other words, it probably did not exist before the mid 1990’s. I had seen the three year old neutered male domestic cat three weeks before. That’s why I did not realize what the appointment was for at first. I had slept at least once since then. He had responded to antibiotics and cortisone but the disease comes roaring right back most of the time if the treatment is not continued long term. We gave him another antibiotic injection and set up the appointment for his teeth to be treated. The treatment can be laser ablation in

order to try to save his teeth. All anesthetic patients get an exam. I looked at his mouth and remembered. His teeth were originally awful. We took dental x-rays. The gum around most of the teeth was eroded as was the bone where the roots are anchored. I realized that there was no hope for his mouth if I treated with the laser. The other treatment is removing the teeth. Ugh! There is no part of veterinary medicine that I detest more than tooth extractions. When I was in veterinary school we were taught that the highest suicide rate in the professions was among human dentists. I fully understand why, after so many years of veterinary dentistry. The thought of pulling teeth, i.e. being the cause of pain, is anathema to me. He needed 13 of his teeth removed. That would leave him with five if I remember correctly as I write this. We treated his mouth with local anesthetic, just like human dentists do. My staff shudders when I have to remove teeth. They know that I will be doing my share of complaining, etc., with emphasis on the etc. I extracted the teeth with great regret over the next two hours. He ended up doing fairly well by the end of the day. The bad news is he may need the last five removed if it is not 100% resolved. I just pray he won’t.
If you have ever received a healing treatment from IET Teacher and Therapist Nancy Cohen, you know that her pets are part of the healing experience. It is always nice when Swagger or Nitro (pictured above) come into the treatment room to say hello and share their love. What you may not know is that Nancy Cohen has a very special healing practice at Feeding The Body Feeding The Soul. Nancy is a trained Integrated Energy Therapy Master and Reiki Master of 14 years. She offers these healing modalities pets as well as people. These gentle, soothing practices can offer both pets and their owner’s relief and release from stress and other issues. The practice of offering IET® to animals is a wonderful way to offer your pet destressing and release from emotions that create behaviors that concern many owners. Pets love the energy they receive in an IET Session with Nancy. Most treatments are 30 minutes to one hour in length. Nancy’s work with Kaya reflects how IET helps animals release fear. “Kaya was a beautiful german shepherd in Colorado. Yet everytime it rained and thundered she ran into the shower stall and hid. The owner/parent of Kaya asked me to offer Kaya two IET(r) sessions, and she became able to tolerate future storms and remain in the company of her owner with greater ease and comfort.” Many other types of animals can be assisted with IET including horses, other mammals. Traditionally it is offered to family pets. Cats and dogs readily accept energy and allow the healer to place his/her hand on them freely. IET® can also be sent to animals through distant healing if they are skittish or confused by a healer’s touch. Another pet Nancy helped was Lady Bug. “Recently I had the opportunity to assist a dog named Lady Bug. She had been abandoned by previous owners and her new owner wanted to make her part of the family. Lady Bug had severe anxiety, growling issues, startled easily and wouldn’t come inside. Through the gentle process of Integrated Energy Sessions, Lady Bug first came cautiously into the house. Within a few days she was eating from a bowl in the kitchen, and today she is a “family member” interacting with her person, accepting affection, getting into mischief and sharing and receiving joy as any beloved pet should do. IET benefited this pet and her owner tremendously.”

Dear Minorcan Mama, I am having a hard time getting my preschooler to sleep at night—what should I do? Sleepless in St. Johns Dear Sleepless,
M
inorcan Mama is a 30-something, St. Augustine Native Minorcan, trying her hardest to raise her modern kids with an appreciation of their roots, their history and a love of the great out-of-doors. Send her your questions about family, parenting, relationships and whatever else you can think of to minorcanmama@gmail.com She loves being “social,” at www.facebook.com/minorcanmama and www.twitter.com/ minorcanmama Also, stay tuned for her new Website and Blog coming this month!
Dear Minorcan Mama, The 2016 Presidential Election is coming up and everywhere I turn, people are asking me who I am voting for, what should I do? What’s your advice on talking politics? Thanks, To Politic or Not to Politic Dear To Politic or Not to Politic, My first reaction is to tell you, “Don’t.” But, you know what, I come from a long line of speak-their-mind-Minorcans, and it was from those front porch politics sessions that I gained perspective and knowledge. Now, I am not encouraging you to get as “passionate” about it as my dad and my grandpa, heaven knows, but I do think that you should discuss what you feel comfortable discussing. The only advice I would give you is to know your audience and be gracious. The 2016 election will come and go, but you will have to face your friends, family, and coworkers, long after Bernie and Hillary give their last speech or Cruz, Kasich or Trump stump.

I hear ya! After many sleepless nights and coffee-fueled mornings we were finally able to get our daughter to go to sleep and sleep through the night. The sleep routine actually starts an hour or so before bedtime. After dinner, homework, television and the hustle and bustle of the early evening is over, begin to create a CALM and QUIET environment in your home by dimming the lights and switching the television off if not in use. This is a good time to take away any electronic tablets that your child may play with, as the light from the screen is said to interfere with the ability to fall asleep. Implement this calm and quiet time and use it every night, then with CONSISTENCY, follow the rest of the bedtime routine. Choose a routine that is most comfortable for your child and family, but whatever you do, stick to it! After some quiet play time at our house, I like to give baths, in a calm, unhurried manner, and then allow them 20-30 minutes more quiet play or reading time. I, myself, like to take this time to catch up on my latest copy of Better Homes and Garden or whatever new Chick Lit. Novel is out. I love it when, I am sitting on the couch, and I peer over my book to see my kids imitating me and reading their own books. If you want to create a behavior in your child, model it. After this 20-30 minutes, we brush teeth and then lay down in bed. At this point, keep it calm and quiet and COMFORTABLE. There are things that you can do to make your child more comfortable in their room and in their bed--let them choose glow stars for the ceiling (those are big in our house), a night light, even their bedding. Giving them a say-so in these things will make them excited about bedtime. Let them choose a comforting object—a stuffed animal, doll, or soft toy that they would like to cuddle with throughout the night. During this time we play soothing music or read books aloud. When you are reading to your child, don’t forget to snuggle up close, this can help your child to relax, feel comfortable and, FALL ASLEEP! I like playing music softly and then after storytime, sitting in the darkened room, with my children until they fall asleep. The music and my presence seems to lull them to sleep. Hang in there! Create a calm and quiet environment, be consistent , and provide a comfortable atmosphere to fall asleep in and they will be snoring before you know it and you will be free to check your Facebook, peruse Pinterest and catch up on Netflix!
Talk or not, but make sure to vote!
Love and Snoozes,
