Beauty at any age we bust the myths!

by Sam & Jordi Woods

There are so many fallacies around “age appropriate” makeup that it is no wonder women get overwhelmed and often lack confidence when the prospect of makeup application is desired.

I (Sam) have been a trained makeup artist for over two decades and Jordi for a decade herself. Therefore, in that time we have both made over many faces of various ages. The one common denominator is that no matter what the age of a client they always look better when the correct colours and correct products for their skin type and complexion have been applied. When makeup is used to accentuate and enhance our natural beauty it does just that – enhances and accentuates.

Now on the other hand, when the wrong colours and the wrong types of products are applied naturally the reverse happens.

So this article is not about “selling” you a particular brand or product (for that you may visit our Style Studio at Erina or the many local makeup stores). This article is designed to give you an insight into what you should be looking for, where those products go and their benefits. Plus we hope to abolish some of those fallacies and myths that our more mature clients have been exposed to.

So let’s look at some products to create a natural makeup and also the fallacies, generalisations and myths that surround them. Sam (52 years – proud to say has had no cosmetic surgery, botox or fillers!) is living proof that the below product application and the myths surrounding them can be busted, as she does EVERYTHING with her makeup that is often said not to be done (at her age)!

Below are 10 products and how and why you can use them at any age! 1 Foundation

Why Used to even out skin tone and create a smooth canvas. Myth Foundation will exaggerate any fine lines and wrinkles. How When foundation is in a colour/ tone that perfectly matches your complexion and is the correct consistency for your skin type a glowing, smooth finish is achieved. In the market today there are many “oxygen” foundations that are perfect for a more mature or dehydrated skin type.

2Concealer

Why Used to conceal dark circles or blemishes and lighten areas on the face. Myth Creates additional creases under eyes, exaggerates wrinkles and fine lines. How Always choose a shade that perfectly matches your complexion but is a shade or two lighter. Opt for a liquid cream as it will not be heavy and gluggy on the more delicate, finer skin around the eyes.

3Cream or Powder Highlighter on cheek bones & browbones Why Creates the illusion of defined bone structure ultimately uplifting the face and giving it a healthy glow. Myth It isn’t necessary if I am not doing a glamour make up.

These classes are ideal for seniors, those with disabilities, limited mobility, the chronically ill, Alzheimer’s patients and people pre/post surgery or anyone new to exercise.

How Apply a cream or powder highlighter along the apple of the cheek and along the brow bone under the eyebrow. Ensure the highlighter is a shimmer not a glitter finish.

4Contour Powder

Why Defines the cheeks creating the illusion of higher cheek bones. Can also be used under the chin to diminish a fuller chin/neck. Myth It looks too unnatural. How A correctly applied contour powder should not look like you have any contour on. Choose a shade that is similar to your skin tone only slightly darker. Avoid contour powders with shimmer as these can add fullness to the face and counter act the idea of contouring.

5Finishing Powder

Why To set makeup or to wear as a light coverage over a moisturiser. Myth Will cake and gather in fine lines and wrinkles. Making the complexion appear older looking. How Ensure you have a finishing powder that suits your skin tone and is fine in texture. With a large brush apply a light dusting of finishing powder down the nose, over the cheeks and across chin and forehead. 6 Brow Pencil or Brow Cream

Why Define the eyebrows which frame the face. Myth Will appear “drawn on” and not natural when the brow hair is minimal or grey. How Using light feathery strokes apply a brow product of your choice to fill in or emphasise the natural brow line. There are many brow products on the market these days from pencils, to waxes, gels and mascaras – talk to a professional to determine what suits your skill set and brow needs.

7Eyeshadow contouring

Why Creates definition to the eye socket – giving the illusion of an uplifted eye. Myth Too old to wear eye shadow as it will accentuate saggy eye lids. How Apply to the middle section of the eye just above the eye bone to create definition and shape without gathering in any creases.

8Eyeliner

Why Creates eye definition and variety to make up look. Can also make lashes appear fuller. Myth Too old to wear eyeliner as it is too harsh. How Using an eye liner of your choice apply light feathery strokes along the lash line and then blend with a fine eyeshadow brush.

9Mascara Why Opens up the eyes. Myth Will make lashes clump together and smudge. How Firstly, always ensure your mascara is not old, dried up or out of date. Secondly, NEVER “pump” your mascara wand in and out of the tube - this creates air bubbles and can form it to ‘clump’ once applied. When applying mascara start with your top lashes - in a sweeping motion apply mascara UP the top lash, back DOWN the top lash (this elongates the lashes), finishing with a final application UP the top lash (this will open up the eye). Finish by applying mascara in a sweeping motion horizontally along the bottom lashes – this will ensure you do not get any mascara under the eye.

10 Lip Gloss Why Will add a subtle vibrancy to the entire face. Is often softer than wearing a light lipstick colour as it will not gather in any fine lines. Myth Too old to wear shine. How In a shade that is correct for your colour palette apply a sweep of gloss along the top and bottom lip. Dab your lips together and finish by applying another sweep of gloss to achieve an extra glossy finish. Recently many companies have bought out lip gloss in a lip stick consistency – these are great as they are not ‘tacky’ like most lip gloss wands.

Great Dental Care and Then Some

From their beautifully restored heritage cottage opposite Terrigal Lagoon, Drs Tony and Lisa Appleton have created a practice that offers a wonderfully successful blend of ‘old’ and ‘new’.

In the patient lounge the beauty and heritage features of the property can be enjoyed whilst relaxing in plush sofas with the latest magazines to read and a choice of complimentary drinks served up by Amy, the practice’s friendly patient co-ordinator. The verandah offers alternative seating with comfortable cushions, planting and views of the Gunyah’s lovely cottage garden. The two treatment rooms and sterilizing suite are all equipped with the latest equipment and technology, a reflection of Tony and Lisa’s commitment to provide only the highest quality of dentistry.

The practice is deliberately small and intimate. Only one patient is booked at a time to ensure each receives the full and undivided attention of the caring and supportive team. We treat our patients as we would like to be treated ourselves, and this 5 star customer service is at the centre of all we do.

Gunyah Dental is a family owned practice, ensuring continuity of care – our dentists are here to stay and have a vested interest in ensuring that the practice maintains its high reputation. With 60 years of experience between them, plus the back up support of an excellent team, Tony and Lisa are very well qualified to provide an extensive range of dental treatments of the highest quality, in the shortest time possible.

We offer flexible appointment times and an emergency service for our patients, with 24 hour telephone access to speak directly to our dentists.

We are delighted to provide gap-free treatment for DVA Gold Card Holders.

The practice has its own car park, which includes dedicated disabled parking and easy access to the practice via a gentle ramp.
