Four years ago, she discovered George Mark Children’s House in Oakland through a mother-daughter organization she and her daughter belonged to. George Mark provides a place for families of children with life limiting illnesses to stay, teaches parents how to help care for their child and offers much practical and psychological support to the entire family.

DiMaggio works at fundraising for the non-profit. A recent gala raised $240,000 in one night, a fact of which she’s justifiably proud.

She’s also volunteered for Children’s Support League for 10 years. “Charities that make an impact on a child’s life continue to inspire me,” she said.

She finds it easy to share information about the charities she supports with clients, colleagues and friends. She integrates this through the DebbiDiMaggioBlog.com, spreading the word about how to help in the community.

GEORGE MARK CHILDREN’S HOUSE in San Leandro provides a safe and comfortable home and haven for children with limiting illnesses. Here, these two children are able to become friends and interact with each other with the aid of specially equipped chairs and other compassionate services that the home provides.

George Mark Children’s House The first and only freestanding residential and pediatric palliative care facility in the United States. George Mark Children’s House “gives the gift of time to children with life limiting illnesses and their families.” The organization is an alternative to Hospice (which usually focused on adult patients), hospital or home care and provides a compassionate home-like atmosphere for children and their families.

The San Leandro based house has doctors and nurses who provide 24/7 medical care for its children and are an interdisciplinary team that includes a licensed social worker, psychologist, child life specialist and chaplain.

What year did you start Fever Charm? together?

How did you come

“We founded Fever Charm in 2010. Theo, Yianni, and I had been best friends for years before forming Fever Charm. There came a time where we needed to find a drummer to play with us. Yianni knew Kendrick through the high school's Lacrosse team, and Theo and I met him and got to know him in our AP Music Theory class which we all took together. Our first show was at Blake's on Telegraph in Berkeley, and we haven't looked back since then.”

Who are your musical inspirations? What are your favorite songs?

What are some funny or unusual stories you can share with us?

“We have a lot of great memories... Our first tour ever, we were stuck in Santa Barbara with no place to stay, and no money. So we decided to try and spend the night in the van (classic broke musicians). We were woken up by the flashing lights of the building's security, and drove away to the closest beach. From there, we just decided to spend the night on the beach. We woke up to a bunch of people staring at us, startled to see four smelly teenagers sleeping on the beach.

When recording Sail Away, our newest EP, we once again found ourselves broke. So, instead of paying lots of money to record, we took a computer, cords, headphones, and a microphone into the Boston Guitar Center, and recorded all of the guitars there. They even allowed us to use over $20,000 worth of equipment.”

“We all have different musical inspirations, which is what makes our music so unique. We listen to everything from The Clash to John Coltrane, and anything in between. Some personal favorites of the band are The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, The Thank you, Fever Charm! I hope you become famous! And, for Beach Boys, Weezer, and Iggy Pop and The Stooges. Participating in the Children’s Support League 2012 VIP house, I talked to many attendees about where they were in the “nesting spectrum”. Some plan to stay in their homes for 20-30 years, others were hoping to add an in-law unit, still others were looking forward to “right-sizing”-- living well in an efficient space. What we all agreed is that our homes are our recharging stations—they have to nourish our lives for today and tomorrow. I spoke with them about a design revolution that is taking place. Here it is: It’s called Universal Design (UD) As a designer of 20+ years, I create homes that are dramatic, welcoming, and fun. But I am also committed to the most ‘future-planning’ approach to make homes universally accessible to people of all ages.
