Welcome to THE CONTENDERS LONDON IT’S MY GREAT PLEASURE TO WELCOME YOU to BAFTA’s 195 Piccadilly for Deadline’s inaugural The Contenders London event.

Deadline has been running The Contenders in Los Angeles for seven years now, offering American voters an opportunity to get up close and personal with the films and talent we think are going to be key players in the annual awards race. And it’s been a dream of ours to bring the event to London to introduce BAFTA, Academy and guild voters in the UK to some of the biggest names in cinema.

We think The Contenders is really the best way to get a sense of where to direct your attention over the next six months or so. In an increasingly connected world, the choice for voters doesn’t get any simpler. As new players invest heavily into quality filmmaking, and established studios are charged to raise their games ever higher, the number of great movies released every year grows.

So The Contenders offers a snapshot of what’s to come by way of personal interaction with the people behind the pictures. Interviewed on stage by Deadline’s editors, they’ll share clips from their films and give you an overview of what went in to making them.

No event like this comes together out of thin air, and so, as I thank you all for coming to our very first The Contenders London, I also want to shout out the people who worked tirelessly to make this a reality.

First of all, Madelyn Hammond and Javier Infante, who spent many sleepless nights figuring out every arrangement, making every booking and juggling every minute of the schedule. I also want to thank the teams at DDA PR and BAFTA 195, who have been a joy to work with.

I suspect many of you can relate, which is why we’re all gathered for Deadline’s inaugural The Contenders London. After many years of running The Contenders in LA (where they get the good films and the good weather), I’m thrilled we’re now able to bring this event to my home city, and the roster of films for our first London event couldn’t be more exciting.

It’s a great pleasure to welcome so much local talent to our stage today. Amongst the British and Irish names we can expect throughout the day: Claire Foy, who will intro the great British story Breathe, from director Andy Serkis; Will Poulter, who delivers a truly frightening turn in Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit;

and Martin McDonagh and Graham Broadbent, whose Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri just won the coveted People’s Choice award at the Toronto Film Festival.

Damian Jones and Domhnall Gleeson will bring Goodbye Christopher Robin to the stage, and Brits Simon Beaufoy and Andrea Riseborough will join American directors Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton to discuss Battle of the Sexes.

Representing the true wealth of our local industry’s behind the scenes talent, costume designer Jacqueline Durran, production designer Sarah Greenwood and set decorator Katie Spencer will walk us through the rich world they created for Beauty and the Beast. And British/Indian author Shrabani Basu will represent Victoria & Abdul, which is based

on her book about Queen Victoria’s close friendship with an Indian servant.

From further afield, we welcome to London a whole roster of incredibly talented international names. From New Zealand, writer/producer Anthony McCarten will discuss Darkest Hour, the Working Title film about Winston Churchill, and director of photography Michael Seresin will bring us into War for the Planet of the Apes. Australian actors Garett Hedlund and Jason Clarke will join American director Dee Rees and actor Jason Mitchell to discuss Mudbound.

Also from the U.S., we’re proud to welcome Todd Haynes, Christine Vachon, Oakes Fegley and Jaden Michael, who will present Wonderstruck. Noah Baumbach, Dustin Hoffman and Adam Sandler will be here to walk us through The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) and Lois Smith will talk about her stunning turn in Marjorie Prime.

There’s a good chance that the eventual winners of some of cinema’s biggest prizes will be amongst the group of people appearing on stage today. At the very least, we hope you’ll come away that little bit more informed about where you might like to direct your votes.

BLEECKER STREET/PARTICIPANT MEDIA Breathe British actor Andy Serkis makes his feature directorial debut with this true story of producer Jonathan Cavendish’s father, Robin, who was given only three months to live after being paralysed by polio at the age of 28. Andrew Garfield stars as Robin Cavendish, who would defy his physicians and live for decades longer, along the way pioneering breakthroughs that would increase his quality of life and that of his fellow sufferers. It is, Serkis says, the purest of love stories, since Robin’s wife, Diana (played by Claire Foy), refused to be cowed by his condition, and stuck by his side for the rest of his life.

Bryan Cranston, Steve Carell and Laurence Fishburne play the former soldiers who must re-evaluate their shared experience—and the separate lives lived in its wake—as they grapple with, at turns, the sense of pointlessness and purpose of their service.
