THE MOST LIMITING FACTOR FROM THE CORNER OFFICE BY HAROLD BERTZ, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
O
ne of the simplest economic principles I learned in school was that to increase profit, one needs to lower costs, increase income or both. The path to achieving any of these endpoints often proves much more difficult. I posed this question to my nephew who owns no cows and is strictly a corn and soybean farmer. His path to lower costs and higher returns was to focus on the most limiting factor, correct it, then move to the next most limiting factor. What is the most limiting factor in your cow herd? Many of the commercial ranches I visit would indicate their most limiting factor is any one of a multitude of fitness traits in their herd. The most often cited is fertility. As we dive deeper into fertility, we discover this can include heifer pregnancy, cow breed back and longevity to name just a few. These are all traits that are tough to measure, difficult to quantify and relatively lowly heritable. Hard traits to fix if they are a herd’s most limiting factor. A recent paper, “Heterosis estimates for heifer pregnancy in US beef cattle,” written by staff at the United States Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) and presented by Dr. Bailey Engle, indicated that, “Heterosis, or the increase in productivity resulting from crossbreeding, is expected to have the largest effect on lowly heritable, complex phenotypes; namely, health and fitness traits.” The study analyzed 18 highly
used U.S. beef breeds, Gelbvieh being one of the breeds included. Results from the study indicated that an F1 cross was estimated to increase the likelihood of heifer pregnancy over a purebred counterpart by 62.8%.
lower weaning weights are the most limiting factor, creating a cow herd with significant Gelbvieh influence has scientific evidence pointing to their ability to mitigate this most limiting factor.
The study also found, “The effect of breed on the likelihood of heifer pregnancy ranged between odds of -39% to 111%, as compared to Angus which was constrained to the intercept, demonstrating considerable between breed variation.” While the research into breed effect is ongoing, it is safe to assume that there may be advantages to consider crossbreeding with strategically selected breeds that excel in heifer pregnancy rate.
While every herd is different and would have a different most limiting factor, the consistent cure is crossbreeding with Gelbvieh. Balancer® cattle are perfect examples of complementary mating for improved cattle through heterosis. Utilizing Balancers in a managed crossbreeding system provides opportunities to address other most limiting factor traits not discussed in this article.
I would contend that one large step in addressing many commercial cow herds’ most limiting factor is introducing a greater level of heterosis or crossbreeding. And crossbreeding with cattle with a history of high fertility and early maturation, Gelbvieh. While a simple solution, planned crossbreeding is a convenient and effective way to address several factors, any of which might be a herd’s most limiting. Some herds I have visited in the past five years have indicated a drop in weaning weight due to lower milk production from their cowherd. Conveniently, Gelbvieh has data also from USMARC that indicates a Gelbvieh cow will increase weaning weight by 22.7 pounds when mated to any breed. If milk and
The best news for commercial cattle producers is Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle have never strayed from focus on the fitness traits that are so important to their bottom lines. In a managed crossbreeding system, significant improvement of most limiting factors can be addressed by using Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics. Heterosis addresses both sides of the profit equation — expense and revenue. As we consider ways to improve ranch profitability, using Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics is scientifically proven to work. I look forward to seeing you down the road.
Bertz recently served as the chief operating officer of the American Royal in Kansas City. He previously worked for the Red Angus Association of America for nearly 10 years focusing on growing the acceptance of Red Angus cattle with commercial cow/calf producers and feedyards. The Bertz family farm near Mayview has been in the family for seven generations. He and his wife, Melisa, are also involved with her family’s farm near Parker, Kansas. They have two grown children that are active in the beef industry.

IMPROVING YOUR BOTTOM LINE VIEW FROM THE BOARD BY DAN WARNER, AGA PRESIDENT
C
attle markets are seeing record prices and the pressure to invest in new technologies for our operations is stronger than ever. New equipment, new data management, new products, but how do we know they truly have an impact on our bottom lines? One of the greatest technology investments a rancher can make to increase profits has been around for ages. That technology is crossbreeding. Crossbred females are known to stay in the herd longer, increase productivity, and improve our bottom lines. Introducing Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics into your herd brings increased
weaning weights, added fertility, and stayability, all while being the smallest mature cow size of the four major continental breeds. New data from the United States Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) revealed the Gelbvieh-influenced female is the only Bos taurus female to have any maternal weaning weight advantage and her advantage is 22.7 pounds. In today’s market at $4.50 per pound on five-weight calves that advantage equates to an additional $102.15 of profit per calf just by introducing Gelbvieh genetics into your herd through crossbreeding.
Further research from USMARC, indicates an F1 cross female is estimated to increase the likelihood of heifer pregnancy by 62.8% compared to purebred females. Capitalizing on maternal heterosis in your cowherd leads to trait improvement in the cow and not only increases her performance, but the performance of her progeny. Utilizing Gelbvieh genetics to increase maternal heterosis is sure to improve your bottom line though increased fertility, more pounds per calf weaned, and longevity. I encourage you to make your crossbreeding count by using Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics in your herd.
Warner Beef Genetics is ran by Dan, his wife Kate, their children and Dan’s older brother, Darren and his wife, Amy. The ranch manages around 1,000 cows with 600 of those registered with the AGA. Warner served as the president of the American Gelbvieh Junior Association in his youth and in multiple capacities on the junior board through 1995-1998. His commitment to service continued on the AGA board where he served for six years from 2008 to 2014 before being reelected to serve in 2024.

Next Level was the high selling yearling bull at the 2024 Boys from the South sale. This homo black, homo polled bull is heavy muscled, bold ribbed and super sound footed. He combines calving ease with performance and power. When it comes to cow families, he has 2 of Green Hills Gelbvieh’s best donors behind him - Lexie 2U1 and Contessa 310T. We feel this guy could be the next widely used Balancer bull. Semen available from Bull Barn Genetics or Cattlemen’s Connection.

Plainsman 115N8
Tomahawk is such a unique and valued breeding piece for our program. A complete outcross pedigree and a true performance and data outlier. He ranks in the top 40% CE, 4% WW, 10% YW, 1% Marbling and his index values are top 15% MPI, 5% FPI, and 4% TPI. His initial sire group posted incredible ratios of 96 BW, 104 WW, and 129 IMF. He is being used in our AI and ET program more than any other bull at Post Rock and we are not selling semen. His sons are the only way to access his genetics.
Tredegar M456
We are incredibly excited to add Tredegar to our bull battery. We feel he has as much to offer the purebred population as any bull in recent years. He posts incredibly individual ratios of 116 WW, 107 YW, 111 REA, and 108 IMF and reads incredibly useful on paper, double digit CE, top 25% BW, top 40% WW and YW, 2% CREA, and 1% Marbling. What we are most excited about is this purebred bull in the flesh. He offers as much fleshing ability and structural correctness that rivals any bull in the Balancer population.
Homo Black Homo Polled 50% Balancer
We are incredibly humbled and honored to have Post Rock Clock Work 164L8 selected as the 2024 People’s Choice Balancer Futurity Champion Bull. His dam was the featured and high-selling female in our 2024 Cowman’s Kind Sale. He will have another large sire group sell both by AI and ET matings.

MATERNAL MASTERPIECE. Rarely do we keep a bull back to use in our program but there was little discussion when it came to Plainsman. His donor dam, Queen Bee G534, is one of the true great purebred cows that’s been on the ranch and she’s populated our cow herd with mouth watering daughters that are making their own stamp in production. Sired by the Angus great, Ellingson Badlands, this young herd sire has incredibly high expectations. We used him heavy in our AI and ET matings this year and currently covering the Balancer heifers.
This Post Rock bred and raised steer was in the 2022 AGF Steer Challenge. We are proud that 6 of our resident herd sires, Game Changer D136, Young Gun C503, Probity 254D28, and Highlife H64 all sired the Champion Pen of Balancer Steers and Roy 32F9, and Top Gun 65F8 sired the Champion Pen of Purebred Steers in the official AGF Scale and Rail Contest. We continue to test all major herd sires in this highly structured AGF contest.

THE GOOD LIFE: MORE THAN A SHOW
T
JUNIOR CONNECTION BY MARTHA MOENNING, AGA MEMBER AND YOUTH ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR
here is something special about the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) Junior Classic. It is the early mornings in the barn, the nerves before a contest, the friendships made across state lines and the laughter that carries late into the evening. It is the lessons learned from a mentor, a parent or a fellow junior and the memories made long after the cattle leave the show ring. For nearly 200 exhibitors from 17 states and Canada, the 2026 AGJA The Good Life Junior Classic, brought those experiences to life June 21-26, 2026, in Grand Island, Nebraska. Hosted by the Junior Gelbvieh Association In Nebraska (Junior GAIN), the week welcomed 469 cattle entries representing more than 380 head and showcased the strength of Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle.
with industry partners including Neogen® and Sullivan Supply. They built relationships through the MentorProtégé program and enjoyed plenty of time to simply be juniors, from a Nebraska-hosted day at Island Oasis Water Park to the AGJA Junior Board of Director’s cornhole tournament and the final dance of the week. One of the most meaningful additions was the AGJA Ambassador service project. Led by Hadlee Ketcherside, “Champions Without Limits” welcomed individuals with disabilities into the show ring for a special showmanship event. The project embodied the spirit of the AGJA and reminded everyone that there is a place for everyone in the livestock industry.
But, as always, the AGJA The Good Life Junior Classic was about much more than cattle.
The show ring also highlighted the next generation of Gelbvieh breeders. New this year, the separate bred and owned female shows recognized juniors who are not only exhibiting cattle but are actively developing their own breeding programs and investing in the future of the breed.
Juniors challenged themselves through educational contests and sessions
Throughout the week, the AGJA felt the tremendous support of its membership
and industry partners. Juniors also continued the tradition of giving back through the annual pop tabs collection benefiting the American Cancer Society. The week ended with the AGJA Banquet, where members and supporters were recognized, accomplishments celebrated and new AGJA Board of Directors members welcomed into leadership. As the barns emptied and everyone headed home, Grand Island left behind more than banners and memories of the show ring. It left behind new friendships, new experiences and a stronger connection to the Gelbvieh breed. “The Good Life” was more than a theme. It was found in the people, the cattle and the moments shared throughout the week. The AGJA extends a sincere thank you to Junior GAIN, families, exhibitors, sponsors, industry partners, donors and volunteers who made the 2026 AGJA The Good Life Junior Classic possible. We’ll see you next year in South Dakota!

WHO WE ARE
WHAT IS A BALANCER®?
The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) is dedicated to recording and promoting Gelbvieh, Balancer® and Gelbvieh-influenced cattle, while providing members and their customers programs and services to advance the breed. The AGA consists of approximately 1,100 members with a registry database that contains over one million animals including approximately 40,000 currently active Gelbvieh, Balancer® and Gelbvieh-influenced cows.
Balancer cattle are registered hybrid seedstock that have documented pedigrees and expected progeny differences. The AGA was the first beef cattle breed to recognize and include a hybrid animal as registered stock.
THE STRENGTHS OF GELBVIEH
AGA STAFF
FAST FACTS
The Gelbvieh breed is well known throughout the industry for their maternal strengths and superior growth. With attributes such as more pounds of calf weaned, added fertility, greater cow herd longevity and heavier carcass weights, just to name a few, Gelbvieh and Balancer offer genetics that work for the commercial cattle business. With the high costs associated with the development or purchase of replacement females, sustained production in a herd is essential. Gelbvieh females are proven to stay in the herd longer. U.S. Meat Animal Research Center data shows Gelbvieh females have the most moderate mature cow size of the seven major beef breeds. This reduced mature cow size allows for puberty to be reached at an earlier age, which leads to calving earlier in the season and producing a heavier calf at a younger age. Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle excel in traits such as growth, stayability and productivity. Using Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics in a crossbreeding program can help increase profitability of an operation. See additional pounds and added profit through more efficiency and greater longevity of cows as well as heavier, faster gaining feeder cattle.
HAROLD BERTZ Executive Director haroldb@gelbvieh.org
10 | SEPTEMBER 2026
TOM STRAHM
Balancer animals are 25% to 75% Gelbvieh with a balance of Angus or Red Angus. The Balancer cattle combine the Gelbvieh growth, muscle, leanness, fertility, longevity and low yield grading ability with the carcass qualities of Angus. Balancer cattle offer a simple and powerful way to maintain hybrid vigor and a profitable blend of British and Continental genetics without a complicated crossbreeding system. These cattle fit well into all aspects of the beef industry, including commercial cow-calf operations and on the rail.
HOW DO GELBVIEH AND BALANCER® CROSSBRED FEMALES PERFORM BETTER? It’s all in the heterosis, or hybrid vigor, described as the increase in performance of the crossbred animal compared to the average of the straight-bred parents. Heterosis impacts traits with low heritability, e.g., reproduction. Producers with crossbred cows can see a higher percentage of their cowherd breed back on the first cycle due to maternal heterosis.
INDIVIDUAL HETEROSIS Individual heterosis is the improvement in performance by the individual crossbred animal above the average of its parents. Increased calf livability, weaning weight, yearling weight and carcass traits are example of individual heterosis in crossbred calves.

Balancer® Edge
Maternal heterosis leads to the combined improvement in traits from the dam that cause increases in the performance of her and her progeny. Examples of maternal heterosis in a beef cow include younger age at puberty, increased calving rate, increased survival of her calf to weaning, longevity and pounds of calf produced in her lifetime.
Balancer® Edge is a source and age verification program for feeder cattle sired by Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls. Offered by the AGA in partnership with IMI Global, this program fives producers the opportunity to participate in a breed-identified feeder calf marketing program with the option to customize. Balancer® Edge customers can choose additional value-added programs, which open the doors to additional markets and the opportunity to generate even more value for their feeder calves.

Made to Mother Data continues to prove Gelbvieh is the maternal breed of choice. BY MEGAN UNDERWOOD, M.S.
14 | SEPTEMBER 2024
“USMARC JUST RELEASED NEW RESEARCH REGARDING BREED-SPECIFIC HETEROSIS FOR GROWTH AND CARCASS TRAITS IN 18 UNITED STATES CATTLE BREEDS, AND GELBVIEH-SIRED FEMALES WERE THE ONLY BOS TAURUS FEMALES WITH A MATER NAL WEANING WEIGHT ADVANTAGE. THE DATA REVEALED THAT GELBVIEHINFLUENCED FEMALES HAD A MATERNAL WEANING WEIGHT ADVANTAGE OF 22.7 POUNDS.”
T
he United States cow herd is at an all-time low due to weather challenges across the country, leaving many farmers and ranchers to contemplate when the next herd rebuild will happen. Some believe the rebuild may happen soon while others believe it could still be a few years. No matter when the rebuild decides to take place, it’s important for farmers and ranchers to evaluate their current herds to determine what is going well and what could be improved. Incorporating Gelbvieh genetics into a cowherd can drastically improve the herd’s maternal heterosis. Gelbvieh-influenced females offer maternal superiority through increased longevity, added fertility, and more pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed. In addition, the females offer a reduced mature cow size, more maternal milk, greater calving ease and reach puberty at an earlier age. Gelbvieh females have the genetics to be the foundation the next herd rebuild, and research continues to show the maternal strengths of the breed. The United States Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) located in Clay Center, Nebraska, is the home of the historic Germplasm Evaluation Project that has contributed data to the beef industry for more than 50 years. This project is designed to compare genetic change across beef breeds and their crosses, which allows producers to make the best genetic selection decisions in crossbreeding systems. The research goals are to identify complimentary breed utilization for traits that impact producer efficiency and cater to consumer preference, sustainability, and marketability.
THE PICTURE OF SUSTAINABILITY USMARC Progress Report No. 22 data shows Gelbvieh females have the smallest mature cow size of the four major continental breeds. The Gelbvieh breed was the only breed in the study to reduce
mature cow size – at an average of 1,382 pounds Gelbvieh-sired females had the lowest five-year-old cow weight. This reduced mature cow-size allows for puberty to be reached at an earlier age, which leads to calving earlier in the season and producing a heavier calf at a younger age. Gelbvieh females are the smallest mature cows however, their decreased size does not negatively influence their maternal ability, it continues to improve their efficiency and makes them the picture of sustainability. Growth in your calf crop begins with the Gelbvieh female and the latest USMARC research proves this fact even more.
MORE PAY WEIGHT USMARC just released new research regarding breed-specific heterosis for growth and carcass traits in 18 United States cattle breeds, and Gelbvieh-sired females were the only Bos taurus females with a maternal weaning weight advantage. The data revealed that Gelbvieh-influenced females had a maternal weaning weight advantage of 22.7 pounds. This increase in weaning weight is thought to be the result of maternal milking ability in Gelbvieh females as Gelbvieh is in the top two breeds for average maternal milk production. In today’s market, the increased 22.7 pounds of weaning weight has a significant impact on the beef producer’s bottom line. At a market price of $4.50 per pound on five-weight steers with a 22.7 pound weaning weight advantage, the Gelbvieh influence would equate to an additional $102.15 of revenue per head. On a group of 100 steers, Gelbvieh-influenced females would generate $10,215 in additional calf crop revenue. Gelbvieh-influenced cowherds generate more pay weight which is more profit for the producer. Gelbvieh genetics grow more than just weaning weights, they grow your profitability. USMARC research continues to show that Gelbvieh females are made to mother, reinforcing their position as the maternal breed of choice.

OVER THE FENCE BY SIDNIE SAVILLE
D
ana Kerns and his family own and operate Double Rafter Cattle Drives, at the foot of the Bighorn mountains, in Ranchester, Wyoming. For more than 135 years, the family has trailed their cattle from the foothills to summer grazing allotments in the mountains, continuing a tradition that predates the establishment of the national forest. As a working family ranch, they still make these cattle drives a part of their regular operation, regardless of whether guests join them. The season runs from early July through early October and includes taking cattle to the mountains, moving them between summer pastures, and bringing the herd back in the fall. Participants spend six to eight hours a day on horseback, camp in tents, and experience authentic ranch life in all weather conditions, from summer heat to the possibility of snow at 9,000 feet.
18 | SEPTEMBER 2026
WHAT INITIALLY DREW YOU TO THE GELBVIEH BREED AND WHAT HAS KEPT YOU COMMITTED TO IT? It’s very, very simple. The first Gelbvieh bulls we bought were in 1976. I love the disposition of the Gelbvieh breed. The person that put us on to those first bulls was Lennis Hall, out of Carnation Farms. We have been using Gelbvieh cattle since then. I love their milking ability, and disposition is a huge, huge part of it for me. I’m just totally sold on the breed.
HOW HAS YOUR BREEDING PHILOSOPHY CHANGED OVER THE YEARS? Well, the big one, of course, when we were in the seedstock business, we were doing a lot of AI and doing embryo transfer, and the fantastic thing with that, of course, is the daughters that you get as a result of that. So, we have done
a couple of things. We have gone to a later calving season, because when I was a young man in my 20s, I didn’t mind working 20 hours a day. Being in the seedstock business, we started calving in late January. We don’t start calving now until about the 20th of April, so our calves are a little bit younger. We wean them generally in December, background them until February or March, and catch that green grass market, and those younger age calves, they go either way. Your buyer pool, in my opinion, is greatly enhanced. Whether they want to go directly into a feed lot and feed them to finish weight or whether they want to go back to grass with them. They work very, very well both ways.
WHY IS DOCILITY SO IMPORTANT IN YOUR OPERATION? To me, it is one of the most overlooked economic factors in the beef business. Cattle that stay calm, you know you’re
going to have a better carcass when you hang it because they don’t get riled. The majority of our trips to the mountains have twenty people along. These people know nothing. So, these cattle are used to people being in the wrong places at the wrong time. They’re really, really good at it. There will be a cow, and she stands there until the people get out of the way. If I’ve got to put a teat in a calf ’s mouth, seven or eight times out of ten, I can do it right in a stall without having to put her in a head catch. We cull pretty hard on disposition. We don’t get equipment torn up. We can load 90% of our cattle out in the middle of the pasture with just two people on horseback and never have to get rope down or have to set up corral panels to get them in the trailer. And so, it’s a tremendous time factor. That goes all the way through, from the bulls to the cows. To me, there’s just a tremendous time saver with quiet disposition cattle other than the economics.
CAN DOCILITY AND PERFORMANCE GO HAND IN HAND, OR DO PRODUCERS THINK THEY HAVE TO SACRIFICE ONE FOR THE OTHER? I think the issue with attitude is people honestly don’t know. They think their cattle are normal. They’ve never really been around a really quiet set of heifers. I don’t think you really know what the potential is of making their life easier with quiet, quiet cattle. So, they don’t feel like it’s a problem because they’ve never had anything other than the way they’re doing it.
WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU FACE WITH RAISING CATTLE AT HIGH ELEVATIONS? Without a doubt, altitude sickness was the first thing. One of the allotments we have right now is just about 9,000 feet in
elevation. We were pretty much Angus and Hereford during the late 1960s, and we couldn’t even figure out for a couple of years what was killing these calves. We just knew that we had something, and they finally got it diagnosed. It seems to me that the only cattle that don’t have it to the extreme are Gelbviehs. Now, we buy all PAP-tested bulls, because of it. One of our key things because of the elevation we run in, is we look very hard for PAP-tested bulls.
IF YOU COULD TEACH A YOUNG BREEDER ONE LESSON, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
nearly a month before turnout, one bull traveled more than 66 miles over 10 days in search of the mountain pasture where he had spent every summer with the cow herd. When he was finally found, he trailed five miles through heavy brush and high alpine pastures and stepped onto the trailer with perfect manners. It’s a story that speaks not only to the breed’s intelligence and natural instincts, but also to the quiet disposition and dependability that Gelbvieh breeders have long valued. Those qualities are why producers continue to rely on the breed generation after generation.
I would say for me, it would be how to handle cattle. I think a lot of people, even if they’re a seedstock producer, could learn a lot about handling cattle and handle it in a manner that would improve their quiet disposition. That enhances other areas of your economic production and whatnot. I’ve known not only seedstock producers, but I know ranchers who have been For all your AI needs: around cattle their entire lives, and I just shudder when I have to go help them. They know nothing about it. It’s a science that needs to be pushed more towards teaching people how to handle cattle. • Sheaths • Salers • Gelbvieh

GELBVIEH:
THE MATERNAL BREED OF CHOICE BY MEGAN UNDERWOOD, M.S.

Docility is one of the most appreciated Gelbvieh traits among commercial cattle producers who value cattle that will
The added fertility of the Gelbvieh cow and her productivity made Gale Rippey, Gale Rippey Farms in Galax, Virginia, a believer in the breed. He sees a 95-98%

conception rate on his virgin heifers but credits the most phenomenal aspect as their breed back rate that next year. They see a 98-99% pregnancy rate on their first-calf heifers. “Through time, first-calf heifers are the hardest thing there is to get bred back and these cattle will perform. If you get
them bred back the first time, they’re going to breed back and stay in the herd,” Rippey said. The Marriotts looked at other breeds over the years, but they always came back to Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics. They love the way the cattle act, grow and the well-rounded set of traits the breed has to offer. The Gelbvieh and Balancer cows give them the complete animal they’re looking for in their operation. “We’re really interested in our cows being good mothers, staying in the herd for a long time, and breeding back,” explained Stacey Marriott. “What we have really focused on is the maternal side of our cow herd.” Rippey puts a tremendous emphasis on the disposition of his herd. The cattle need to be able to be handled and moved without having people get hurt or any fencing issues. Gelbvieh cattle are easy to handle and keep themselves and everyone involved safe. Their quiet temperament and docility make safe cattle handling and care an easy task to achieve. “What makes this breed shine is not when times are good, it’s when times are hard. Across the five breeds, we work with, there is no question in my mind that a Gelbvieh cow can be a full body condition score less than her other breed contemporaries and still breed at the top of the pack,” explained Bill Tucker, Tucker Family Farms, Amherst, Virginia. “Their innate ability to turn what resources they have into fertility; it’s just the way their bodies work that sets them apart from the other breeds we’ve worked with.” When choosing quality females, producers value cattle that stay in the herd for a long time and raise a calf each year regardless of climate. These producers recognize that Gelbvieh and Balancer females excel in both longevity
and the ability to adapt to different environments. “The most overlooked trait, in my opinion, in the commercial beef industry is that the Gelbvieh cattle in our database blow away other breeds in longevity. It doesn’t matter if you’re buying a car or putting together the factory, we call the cow, if you can monetize that out over 14 to 15 years instead of eight years, look at her return on investment,” explained Tucker. “Gelbvieh cattle are solid, they’re the oldest cows in our herds no matter how we use them in any composite. They’re there because they hang in there and do their job right.” The Powles family continues to choose Gelbvieh because they are a strong maternal breed, and they want to make their own cows. They don’t want to go out and buy their cow herd; they want to producer their own along with producing a steer calf that is comparable in the marketplace. Gelbvieh has done this repeatedly and is a great fit for their environment. Located in the Sandhills region of Nebraska, it’s basically a desert with about 14-16 inches of annual rainfall. They must be careful in management decisions, so they don’t overgraze their environment. “Maternal ability is important to us because, in a Sandhills operation, the cows have to fend for themselves a lot of times to take care of that calf in some pretty unique conditions. We supplement them and feed them in the wintertime, but on the maternal side, they’ve got to be a good mother who’s going to look out for their calf in all kinds of conditions in the Sandhills region,” explained Bryon Powles, Powles Ranch, Bingham, Nebraska.
Balancer female is still going to breed back and wean that heavy calf. These females are going to stay in the herd longer and continue to influence the genetics of the operation. Additionally, her calf excels in feed efficiency to have a heavy carcass weight, grade well on the rail, and do so at a young age. “Our customer base understands moderation in the cow herd and functional traits. They understand you can have a 1200-pound cow with a 600-pound calf. You don’t have to have a 1600-pound cow to make the big calf. We’re not making huge cows, we’re making functional cows,” Tucker explained. Maternal efficiency is an important trait in any cow/calf operation and is on the Gelbvieh female excels in. With a more moderate mature cow size, Gelbvieh females consume less while weaning heavier calves. Gelbvieh and Balancer maternal influence in a crossbreeding system offers more pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed. Heavier weaning weights combined with feed bunk efficiency and heavier, fastergaining feeder cattle can increase profitability. “The Gelbvieh cattle have been a true asset to our operation through the ability to utilize their genetics to set up a nche market with opportunities to meet new people and to help the beef industry,” said Rippey. Gelbvieh and Balancer females offer maternal superiority and moderate mature weights, quiet dispositions, added fertility, and greater longevity; truly, making them the maternal breed of choice.
Rippey credits the feed conversion of the Balancer female to her efficiency as she can take forage and turn it into pounds. However, when the environment isn’t prosperous in forage production, the

he graphs below illustrate the genetic trends for the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breeds for the past 20 years. It is exciting to see the continuous genetic progress that has been made by an American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) membership dedicated to 0 0 2006increasing 2008 2010weaning 2012 2014 2018 weights, 2020 2022 2024 as an improving Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle. Lowering birth weight while and 2016 yearling as well CW MARB increase in fertility and carcass traits are proof that traits continue to see improvement. Figures within the graphs charted here are representative of both the Gelbvieh and Balancer populations combined.
American Gelbvieh Association EPDs and Economic Indexes Calving Ease Direct (CED): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd. Milk (Milk): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic pre-disposition to calve unassisted as heifers. Heifer Pregnancy (HP): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressed as a percent. A higher value of this EPD is favorable, meaning that a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters get pregnant as first calf heifers compared to other sires in his contemporary group. 30-month Pregnancy (Pg30): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as first-calf heifers. This EPD is expressed as a percent, again, with a higher number being more favorable meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters will calve at three years of age, given they calved as first-calf heifers.
Weaning Weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.
$GAIN: Reports the difference in expected marginal value of gain less the cost of feed to achieve that gain. Reported in dollars of marginal profit with more positive values representing increased efficiency and profit.
Yearling weight (YW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling.
Maternal Profit Index (MPI): In this production scenario, Gelbvieh bulls are mated to Angus-based cows with surplus calves marketed at weaning, with replacement heifers retained from the calf crop. EPDs weighted in this index are Calving Ease Direct (CED) and Maternal (CEM), Weaning Weight (WW), Milk (MILK), Mature Weight (MWT), Dry Matter Intake (DMI), Stayability (STAY), and Heifer Pregnancy (HP). Mature weight is the primary driver and represents the significant cost of maintenance energy requirement in the cow-calf sector. Weaning Weight and Milk (expressed in pounds of calf weaning weight) represent the principal revenue stream. Stayability helps account for differences in replacement costs in the system and the effect of heifer retention on revenue streams. This index should be used by commercial cattlemen whose production scenario includes the traditional marketing of calves at weaning and replacement retention from the herd.
Mature Weight (MWT): Body weight of cows adjusted to six years of age at body condition score 5. MWT is reported in pounds and is computed from a genetic model that leverages information from weaning weight, post-weaning gain, and mature weights of cows. Reported weights are adjusted for both age at observation and for body condition. Body weights of cows 2 to 12 years of age are utilized in the evaluation. Cow Energy Requirement-Yearly (CERY): Mature body weight, lactation potential and birth weight are primary predictors of energy requirements. Mature Weight, Milk and Birth Weight EPD are utilized to inform prediction equations from beef cow nutrition research to estimate differences in energy requirement over a production year. The CERY EPD is reported in pounds of Total Digestable Nutrients (TDN) required for an age 6 cow. Yield Grade (YG): Differences in yield grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio.
Stayability (STAY): Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six year of age. The stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity.
Carcass Weight (CW): Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint.
Docility (DOC): Is reported as a percentage, with higher numbers indicating a higher percent of offspring receiving a disposition score of 1 (docile).
Marbling (MARB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades.
Scrotal Circumference (SC): Predicts the difference, in centimeters, of scrotal circumference of an animal’s male offspring at yearling compared to the SC of other animals’ male offspring. Birth Weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf.
Ribeye area (CREA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable.
Fat (CFAT): Differences for fat thickness, in inches, for a carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fat thickness are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to yield grade. Dry Matter Intake (DMI): The genetic difference in pounds of expected average daily dry matter intake of progeny.
Feeder Profit Index™ (FPI™): Envisioned as a completely terminal index, FPI assumes all calves are marketed as finished beef carcasses priced on a value-based grid. Thus, it shouldn’t be used in production scenarios where replacements are kept from these matings. The new FPI formulation more precisely weights Economically Relevant Traits (ERTs) available for selection, including the key carcass traits of Carcass Weight (CW), Ribeye Area (REA), and Dry Matter Intake (DMI) that were not included in the original formulation. The new FPI also weights Fat Thickness (CFAT), post-weaning Average Daily Gain (ADG), and Calving Ease Direct (CED). Carcass value determined by carcass weight, quality, and yield grade influencing traits accounts for approximately 75% of the index as principal revenue drivers. Dry Matter Intake (DMI) captures differences in expected costs to the terminal carcass endpoint. Total Profit Index (TPI): Combining replacement female retention from the herd with carcass endpoint for marketed surplus heifers and all steers, TPI balances both maternal and terminal selection criteria. Because of the challenges faced by commercial cattlemen by the antagonisms in selection for this production scenario, TPI includes the largest and most diverse set of EPDs in the model, including carcass traits as the primary revenue drivers with cow Mature Weight (MWT), Stayability (STAY) and Dry Matter Intake (DMI) as cost drivers.

ADAPTABILITY IS THE FOUNDATION OF COW EFFICIENCY RESEARCHER DISCUSSES TIPS FOR SELECTING COWS THAT FIT THE WESTERN U.S. RANGE.
D
BY KAITLIN DONOVAN, BEEF IMPROVEMENT FEDERATION
o your discussions on beef cow efficiency center around growth and feed conversion? That’s where many producers start, but Tim DelCurto, Ph.D., tells cattle producers that is the wrong place to focus. “The cow has to calve every spring, breed during a defined breeding season, wean a calf each fall and do it all over again the next year,” DelCurto said. “Reproductive success is our most important metric for efficiency.” DelCurto presented “Beef Cow Adaptability: The Western Range Cow as an Example,” at the 2026 Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) Research Symposium and Convention in Boise, Idaho. The annual meeting was established to bring together science and industry professionals to improve beef cattle genetics. DelCurto is professor and head of the Department of Animal and Range Sciences at Montana State University, where he is known for his research in range beef cattle nutrition and management. His studies have shown that efficiency isn’t determined by a single measurement, but it is instead documented by how well a cow matches the environment in which she’s expected to perform. DelCurto said producers should consider thinking beyond popular selection trends and focus on biological adaptability.
WHAT IS BIOLOGICAL ADAPTABILITY? Rather than searching for a universal “ideal cow,” DelCurto recommends identifying the type of female best suited for the forage base, climate and management system.
30 | SEPTEMBER 2026
In the arid and semi-arid rangelands of the western United States, where growing seasons are short and forage quality declines quickly, cattle must do more with less. Those conditions reward cows that maintain body condition, breed back consistently and efficiently utilize available forage. “It’s an environment where you don’t maximize production,” DelCurto said. “It’s an environment where we try to optimize production.”
FOCUS ON COW SIZE While larger-framed cattle often excel in feedlots or high-input production systems, DelCurto said moderatesized cows with moderate milk production frequently outperform larger counterparts when feed resources become limited. However, that doesn’t mean producers should assume that bigger cows automatically require more feed. “Be careful when you read some of these studies looking at cow size,” he said. “A lot of times they assume intake is proportional to the size of the cow. It is not.” Instead of focusing solely on mature size, DelCurto said producers should evaluate how genetics interact with available resources. Selecting for ever-increasing growth and milk production may improve individual performance traits, but this can also increase nutritional demands and reduce longevity in harsher environments. “There’s no such thing as normal weather here in the western U.S.,” DelCurto said. “There’s an average, but everything deviates from the average.”
That annual variability makes adaptability one of the most economically valuable traits in a cow herd.
BUILDING AN ADAPTABLE COW PROFILE DelCurto said there is value in evaluating feet and leg structure, pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) scores and residual feed intake (RFI), but only when done in the context of the production system. Ultimately, he said, producers should strive for cows that require fewer inputs while remaining productive throughout their lifetime. “The cattle we try to fit in an environment are the cattle we’d like to minimize nutritional inputs,” DelCurto said. “Those are the animals you’re really trying to match to your resources.” As genetic technology continues to advance, DelCurto encouraged producers not to lose sight of the fundamentals, from reproduction onward. “What do we need them to do? What are our expectations? What kind of resources do we have?” he asked. Answering those questions, he said, is the key to building a cow herd that is both biologically efficient and economically sustainable. Access the 2026 BIF Symposium presentation archive, which is continuously updated, at BIFSymposium. com. DelCurto’s full presentation is available on the BIF YouTube page at youtu.be/lzcF5onKTkQ.
