A Note About the Catalog:

Every female in the sale has been DNA tested for a low-density panel to have Genomic Enhanced EPDs. If they don’t have the ‘AGA GE-EPDs’ logo on the right side of the pedigree, their DNA tests are not finished and will be available on a supplement sheet. To help you ascertain the EPD comparison within breed, we have included a line with the percentile ranking within breed per EPD. The numbers correspond directly to the EPD above them.

All of the AI dates and Pasture Exposed information is noted in the ‘Breeding Status’ area and Page 33 in the back of the catalog has all of the Reference sires for ease of checking EPDs etc. A supplement sheet will be posted at the www.seedstockplus.com website as soon as more data becomes available. Sandy Knoll Farm has been raising Gelbvieh cattle since 1982. The cattle business and the Gelbvieh breed have transitioned over 35 years, as has Sandy Knoll with the inclusion of feedlot & carcass data, DNA genomics and RFI testing. We began with a base herd of red, horned Fullbloods & Purebreds. Currently, the herd consists of polled, black & red Balancers & Purebreds as well as a group of Fullbloods.

Sandy Knoll Farm is offering 1 PICK from our 2016 natural born spring bred heifers, which consists of 85 head. They are about 70%/30% black to red in color. 65% Balancers and 35% are Purebreds. Fellow Cattlemen and Cattlewomen, I bought my first Gelbvieh heifers and bull in the spring of 1981. My AGA# is 2072. One of the main things that drew me to the Gelbvieh breed was the solid red color. At the time I thought we should have called our herd Calico Cattle Company. After using Gelbvieh bulls for a few years and keeping replacements, we chose to use Red Angus on the heifers. That worked great, so since then we crossed back and forth and got the cattle herd all red. With the demand for black cattle so strong, I opted to buy some top notch blacks to also capitalize on that market. They have been well received and have sold well.

With that being said, and being sixty one and a one man show, I felt I wanted to focus all of my energy on raising Red Balancers. They are my passion, and I feel they have a lot to offer the cattle industry. I will be using Red Angus and Red Balancer dams mated to both Gelbvieh and Red Angus sires. So here is your opportunity to take these awesome blacks home, as well as our Red Purebred matrons, and reap the rewards of years of selection pressure. Many offspring of these cows have sold extremely well through this sale, Seedstock Plus Bull sales and the Gelbvieh Gold Sale.

POLLED: An animal with absence of horn growth (An animal can have scurs and still be genetically polled) DOUBLE POLLED: An animal whose sire and dam are both polled or scurred, this gives this animal the possibility of being homozygous polled for the polled trait but it is not yet proven so.

HOMOZYGOUS POLLED: An animal who carries two polled genes, and will produce polled or polled/scurred offspring with every mating.

DILUTER GENE: A gene carried by some Gelbvieh cattle that affects the degree of red color in the hair coat. Bulls carrying this gene can produce gray calves when mated to black cows or cream colored calves when mated to each other.

DILUTER FREE: All Red Angus are free of the diluter gene as are all red Gelbvieh cattle resulting from a double black mating. Red Gelbviehs can also be proven diluter-free by mating to black cows and producing all red or black offspring DOUBLE BLACK: An animal whose sire and dam are both black, which give the animal the possibility of being homozygous for the black trait but its not yet proven so.

HOMOZYGOUS BLACK: An animal who carries two black genes and has been proven by mating or genetically tested to produce black or black factor (gray when mated with diluter-based genetics) calves with every mating.
