THERE’S SOMETHING HAPPENING HERE
B
by Harold Bertz, Executive Director
uffalo Springfield recorded For What It’s Worth in the late 1960s. The song has a catchy opening line, “There’s something happening here. What it is ain’t exactly clear.” The American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF) has something happening here and the results are extremely clear. That something is the Scale & Rail Contest, AGF Steer Challenge and the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) Steer Profitability Challenge held at Kinsley Feeders near Kinsley, Kansas. For the past 11 years Gelbvieh- and Balancer®-influenced cattle have been delivered by purebred and commercial producers, fed and harvested to increase the volume of actual carcass data into the genetic evaluation and allow for better knowledge of a program’s performance. The AGF utilizes these programs to bolster their three primary focal areas of youth development, member education and research for the improvement of Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics. Money raised from the Steer Challenge portion helps fund other projects of the AGF centering around the three focal areas. The Scale & Rail program is one of the longest running, successful breed sponsored feeding programs in the industry. Since 2016, over 900 head of Gelbvieh- and Balancer-influenced animals have been through the program. Producers are provided gain and carcass information post-harvest and are eligible for awards. The data gathered is uploaded into the genetic evaluation to increase accuracy of carcass and growth EPDs. Prizes are awarded to Gelbvieh and Balancer individuals and pens for highest average daily gain and highest carcass value. Delivery to participate this year is December 7-11, 2026, at Kinsley

Feeders located near Kinsley, Kansas. Each participant may enter three or more steers or heifers from the same contemporary group (same ranch, arrival date and same harvest date). Steers should be a minimum of 650 pounds with a maximum of 900 pounds. Heifers should weigh between 650 and 800 pounds. Animals should be born between January and April 2026 and weaned at least 30 days prior to arrival. All animals will have a DNA sample taken at Kinsley Feeders for sire verification and paid for by the AGF. A complete list of requirements can be found at https://gelbvieh.org/foundation/ projects. The AGJA Steer Profitability Challenge is a partnership between the AGJA and the AGF to create an opportunity for junior members to participate in the feeding of their cattle and document the entire process through a portfolio of their experience. The requirements and delivery dates are the same as the Scale & Rail Contest. There are three age divisions for participation: Junior (ages 8-11 as of January 1, 2027), Intermediate (ages 12-15 as of January 1, 2027), and Senior (ages 16-21 as of January 1, 2027) Winners of animal performance and junior portfolios will be awarded belt buckles and an opportunity to earn a $500 scholarship sponsored by the AGF. The AGF Steer Challenge allows supporters of the foundation to donate a portion of a steer or heifer’s proceeds to the AGF. These donations are designated to breed improvement projects such as research, updating DNA markers, and EPD and economic index improvement. The requirements for this program mirror the Scale & Rail Contest and the AGJA Steer Challenge. Participants of the AGF Steer Challenge can donate
Gelbvieh or Balancer commercial and/ or registered animals. There is no limit to the number of animals a person or operation may donate. Donations will be withheld from cattle proceeds and sent directly to the AGF. Participants in the AGF Steer Challenge are eligible for awards and cash prizes up to $2,000 given to the top performing animals. For more information on participating in any of these three programs, contact Sydney Wilkinson, AGF liaison, at 719-680-7910, Tom Strahm, AGA commercial marketing director, at 785-547-7999 or Wess Anglin, AGA commercial marketing specialist, at 662-292-4582, or visit the website at https://gelbvieh.org/foundation/projects. The AGF has a rich history of supporting the efforts of the AGA and the AGJA. These three programs are a testament to Gelbvieh breeder’s commitment to the continual improvement of the breed and the supporting group that facilitates this happening. By measuring the cattle we raise, we can make constant improvement. 11 years of carcass and gain information has increased the predictability of data for every AGA member. There is something happening here and through these programs the results are crystal clear! I encourage you to support the AGF through a donation or participation in the programs outlined above. It is an investment in the future of the breed. Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle continue to pave the way for more profitable ranches through measured data.F

INFORMATION EXCHANGE DISCOVER THE COW POWER IN YOUR HERD!
The Cow Power Female Genotyping Project is a collaborative effort with the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA), American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF), and Neogen, to increase the number of genotypes and phenotypic information on females in the AGA herdbook. Collection of this information helps to increase the accuracy and predicting power of EPDs used to describe Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle. Through participation in the project, members have the opportunity to receive a research price of $20 for a GGP-100k genomic test on females provided they DNA test at least 90% of their current active cow inventory. Additionally, participants who submit both mature weights and body condition scores electronically on at least 90% of their current active cow inventory will receive a GGP-100k genomic test for only $16. For less than the cost of a parentage test, members are encouraged to take advantage of this incredible opportunity and learn amount the cow power in their herd. To enroll in the Cow Power Project, contact Sarah Mumm, AGA performance programs coordinator, at sarah@gelbvieh.org.
INTRODUCING AMNESTY MONTH – FEBRUARY 2027
Amnesty Month gives members an opportunity to reactive eligible registered Gelbvieh and Balancer females for the 2027 production year without paying previously missed herd assessments. Program Rules: • Any Gelbvieh or Balancer registered female requiring a 2027 herd assessment is eligible to receive the 2027 assessment without penalty of previously missed assessments. Whether the female’s last assessment was completed in 2015 or 2025, she may be reactivated for the 2027 production year by paying only the 2027 herd assessment fee. • The female will receive only a 2027 herd assessment credit, which allows the member to register one natural born 2027 calf or set of twins, submit performance data for the 2027 calf, and complete an ownership transfer for the female sold in 2027. • This program does not cover missed herd assessments from prior years. Reactivation through Amnesty Month applies only to the 2027 production year and does not bring the female current for previous years. • If a member wishes to register calves from prior years, all applicable fees must be paid according to the current amnesty rules (last herd assessment applied in 2023 or before). • Foundation females, AMXX commercial females, and registration of ET calves are not eligible under this program.

JUNIOR CONNECTION
BUILT DIFFERENT: THE POWER OF GELBVIEH
F
By Clara Belle Bishop, AGJA Director
or a moment, everything in the championship drive seemed to slow down. The cattle stood in line, exhibitors exhaled and tightened their grips on their show sticks, and the crowd pressed closer around the ring. American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) board members lined the gates, ready to welcome the division champions to the final moment when the best of the best would be crowned. After days of preparation, competition, and anticipation, it had all led to this: one final walk down the line before the supreme champions of the 2026 AGJA Junior Classic were selected.
while showmanship, skill-a-thon, sales talk, livestock judging, and other contests challenged juniors to step outside their comfort zones. The AGJA Junior Classic isn’t just a show for the juniors. It’s an annual tradition; a place where familiar faces become lifelong friends and where younger exhibitors begin to look up to the ones above them.
As the judge made his way down the line, it was hard not to notice everything surrounding the cattle, too. Bright-eyed parents, holding paint cans, halters, and cameras, lined the gates, trying to find the secret way to help their juniors in the ring. AGJA board members moved throughout the ring, tailing heifers and providing support to the exhibitors. Friends and mentors waited by the exit, everyone holding their breath tightly, hands shaking nervously, heart beating fast, praying that their kid would have a shot at the backdrop.
The AGJA gives juniors opportunities to grow through leadership, education, competition, and the AGJA Junior Classic. The AGJA Board of Directors helps bring that vision to life by giving juniors a voice in the direction of the association and creating opportunities for the next generation.
Junior Classic has never been only about the banners we take home. It’s about everything that happens before and long after the champions are selected. It’s about the people we stand beside and the friends we make throughout the best week of the year. That feeling carried throughout the entire week in Grand Island, Nebraska, as juniors from across the country came together to celebrate not only their cattle, but the breed that brought them together. The show ring brought the familiar nerves and excitement of competition,
8 | GELBVIEH WORLD
AGJA: MORE THAN AN ASSOCIATION The future of the breed doesn’t happen by accident. It takes an association willing to invest in its juniors and juniors willing to invest in their association.
THE POWER OF GELBVIEH So, what exactly is the power of Gelbvieh? Its strength lies in its versatility: the ability to bring value to the show ring, the seedstock operation, and the commercial cow herd while giving each person something different to appreciate. To a junior, it might be the heifer standing at the end of their show stick, the one they spent countless hours fitting, working, and dreaming about. To a breeder, it might be a cow family developed over generations or a young sire that represents years of genetic progress. To a commercial cattleman, it might be the genetics working quietly in a pasture, producing calves and building
a more productive cow herd. Different goals, different cattle, and different operations can all find value in the same breed. And perhaps that is what makes Gelbvieh so powerful. The cattle bring us together, but their versatility gives us a reason to stay. The power of Gelbvieh isn’t simply what the cattle do—it is what those cattle make possible for the people who believe in them.
WHAT’S NEXT? With the AGJA Junior Classic behind us, the AGJA calendar is far from slowing down. Gelbvieh cattle will head to the North American International Livestock Exposition, Cattlemen’s Congress, and the National Western Stock Show, bringing more opportunities to compete, learn, and represent the breed we are proud to call our own. And as the show season continues, so does the work of the AGJA. This year’s AGJA Board of Directors is excited to serve our members, bring new ideas to the table, and continue building an association that gives every junior a place to grow. The banners may mark where we’ve been, but the people standing beside them will determine where we go next. And if the championship drive taught us anything, it’s that the future is already standing in the ring.F

REGISTRY TIPS N’ TRICKS
GUIDE TO CONTEMPORARY GROUPING
W
by Shianna Ocken, AGA Registry Coordinator
ith the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Online Registry Service making herd data and EPD values easily accessible for producers to make genetic improvements within their herd, the AGA office often receives questions about the specifics of contemporary grouping, its importance, and how they are formed. Below we break down the answers to those questions:
WHAT ARE CONTEMPORARY GROUPS? Contemporary groups are a group of animals that have experienced a similar environment with respect to the expression of a trait, such as birth weight. Contemporaries are typically from the same location, are of the same sex, similar age, and have been managed alike. Grouping of animals for genetic evaluation is important because heritability of traits can be increased by adjusting for known environmental effects and by managing animals to minimize differences in performance influenced by the environment. It is not always possible for animals to be managed the same, particularly if you compare animals from different herds or even different areas of the country. Contemporary grouping makes it possible to fairly compare animals with different environmental influences.
IMPORTANCE OF CONTEMPORARY GROUPING Incorrect grouping of animals can distort genetic predictions for individual animals. Generally, this occurs when some animals receive preferential treatment in the herd but are contemporary grouped with animals that do not receive that special treatment.
10 | GELBVIEH WORLD
A common example of this situation would be show animals that are given extra feed and care apart from the herd. These animals typically grow faster than the rest of the herd because of the special management and feed, so they should be separated by the breeder into a different contemporary group. If all animals are grouped into one contemporary group, the potential for growth in the show animals may appear greater. While in reality, the relative performance of those animals is biased upward because of being compared to the rest of the herd that received no special treatment. Additionally, it is important to report information on whole contemporary groups: the good, bad and indifferent. When only the good weights are reported, the weights that would be in the middle to high end of the whole contemporary group would appear more towards the bottom when the less desirable weights aren’t submitted. Reporting whole contemporary groups allows your good animals to look even better when compared to all contemporaries rather than just the good ones.
FACTORS INFLUENCING CONTEMPORARY GROUPS The grouping of animals begins at birth and is done by herd. Calves are separated by a 90-day window for birth date, sex, service type (AI or Natural Service vs ET calves), birth type (twins vs single birth), and management code. The management code is set by the producer to denote groups of animals that are managed differently. If a management code is not set, all calves would have a management code of 1. If a producer wants to group calves differently, they can separate calves by management codes of 1, 2, 3, and so on.
Contemporary groups are additive, meaning they build on each other as time goes on. Weaning contemporary group, for example, is formed by birth contemporary group, weaning weight date, sex, and management code. Yearling contemporary group is formed by weaning contemporary group, yearling weaning date, sex, and management code. Each group (aside from birth) is based on a previous group. If you have many groups at birth, you will have subsequent contemporary groups as well. However, it is important to remember that contemporary groups cannot get bigger, they can only get smaller as they continue.
VIEWING CONTEMPORARY GROUPS IN YOUR HERD Contemporary groups can be viewed in your herd using the following steps: • Log in to your home page on the AGA Online Registry Service. • Locate and click the tab labeled “CG’s”. • It will then bring up tabs labeled “Birth”, “Weaning”, “Yearling”, “Ultrasound”, and “Carcass”. • Under each of these tabs you’ll also find the contemporary makeup and structure. • Choose the category of contemporary groups you wish to view. Once you’ve selected a tab, your contemporary groups, number of head, and details of each group will appear. For more information on contemporary grouping in your herd, please call the office at 303-465-2333 or email registry@gelbvieh.org and we would be more than happy to assist you.F

Recognizing the Year’s Top Maternal Inf luences: Annual Dams of Merit and Dams of Distinction Honors
G
elbvieh and Balancer® females offer maternal superiority and moderate mature weights, quiet dispositions, added fertility and greater longevity; truly, making them the maternal breed of choice. This year, as in decades past, the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) recognizes the top performing Gelbvieh and Balancer females and the AGA members who breed and own them through the Dam of Merit and Dam of Distinction program.
The Dam of Merit honor recognizes cows that meet strict selection criteria including early puberty and conception, regular calving intervals and above average weaning weights on at least three calves. Of the 32,730 cows assessed in 2025, only 5.77% qualify for this elite group. The Dam of Distinction award recognizes cows that meet the same high standards, in addition to exhibiting superior, long-term productivity with at least eight calves. Just over 1.17% of all
the active Gelbvieh and Balancer cows qualify for this prestigious group. To celebrate the accomplishments of our members, we’ve gathered the top 10 states ranked by the combined total of Dam of Merit and Dam of Distinction awards, as well as the top 20 owners, top 20 breeders and a detailed list, sorted by state, of those members who own Dams of Merit and/or Dams of Distinction honorees.F

POWER RECOGNIZING THE
OF GELBVIEH FEMALES by SARAH MUMM
T
Project, highlighting members who are committed to advancing the genetics of their herds and investing in the future of the Gelbvieh breed.
The AGA is proud to announce this year’s breeders who have participated in the Cow Power Female Genotyping
Cow Power Certified breeders have demonstrated their dedication by genomic testing at least 90% of their breeding-age females. This investment provides powerful insight into the hardworking Gelbvieh cow, helping breeders identify and multiply the most productive, maternally efficient, and profitable genetics in their herds. In addition to improving decision-making,
he Cow Power Female Genotyping project is collaborative effort with the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA), American Gelbvieh Foundation and Neogen to increase the number of genotypes and phenotypic information on females in the AGA herdbook. Collection of this information helps to increase the accuracy and predicting power of EPDs used to describe Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle.
this commitment adds long-term value to these females and their progeny. Breeders who take their involvement a step further earn recognition as Cow Power Elite breeders. In addition to meeting the Certified requirements, Elite breeders submit mature weights and body condition scores on their breedingage females and genomic test a full year’s worth of replacement or yearling heifers. This added level of data collection reinforces a full-circle commitment to herd improvement and the future of the breed.F

OVER THE FENCE with
Lanny Ford by GRACE SCHLUETER, AGA Intern
L
anny Ford’s roots in the cattle business run deep. A thirdgeneration cattleman, Ford grew up on the family commercial cow-calf operation, but his journey in the cattle business would take him well beyond the operation where he got his start. After graduating high school, Ford spent several years traveling throughout cattle country, taking on seasonal work from New Mexico to the Flint Hills of Kansas. Along the way, he built relationships that would later become the foundation for his future business endeavors. The Texas Christian University Ranch Management Program was the next stop on the map for Ford, and soon after graduating he got into the cattle order buyer business. The years Ford spent working and travelling around cattle country gave him the ability to procure and group quality calves within the area. Eventually the need for preconditioned calves brought him to transition into a stocker operation, where he sold load lots of preconditioned calves and gained experience on the marketing side of the business.
24 | GELBVIEH WORLD
At this point, Ford still operated the family cow-calf operation and was procuring groups of replacement heifers for other producers in the area that lacked the relationships and knowledge to source the right cattle. In 2013, Ford and two others decided to pull together their resources and form a commercial replacement female auction to fill the need in the local market, and LBJ Cattle Marketing was born. The sale auctions were a huge success and before long, the sales were full and people were asking for more. Ford was involved in yet another side of the cattle market – bull leasing. Similar to the replacement heifers, Ford assisted producers in the area with accessing quality herd sires and soon found himself with another business venture. Ford and his wife, Melony, currently reside in Hope, Arkansas, where they run their commercial cow-calf operation, F&F Cattle Inc.
HOW DID YOU FIRST GET STARTED WITH GELBVIEH AND BALANCER ® GENETICS? The fall and spring replacement female auctions were a great success, and eventually we got to a point where we had the demand for bulls. The fall sale was always full and heavy with females. However, we were always a little lower on numbers in the spring, so we started implementing consigned bulls during the spring sale. That’s where the Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics were introduced to this part of the country, as nobody knew what a Gelbvieh or Balancer was before then. One of my other partners and I had previously bought some bulls from Seedstock Plus and had built a close relationship with them, especially John Burbank in particular. Burbank would bring us a handful of bulls to that spring sale, and the next thing you know, he’s got the most demanded product of the day. The bulls were so well-received, we started hosting an Arkansas Seedstock
Plus Bull Sale on the first Saturday every March. It went from him bringing six or eight bulls to the spring female sale, to now selling over 80 bulls during our annual Seedstock Plus Bull Sale. We put a few Angus bulls and some purebred Brangus bulls from Southern Arkansas University in the sale, but the majority of the bulls are from Seedstock Plus.
WHAT HAS KEPT BOTH YOU AND YOUR CUSTOMERS LOYAL TO THE GELBVIEH AND BALANCER BREED? Our customers keep on buying Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics because of the breed’s performance and mothering ability. The growth would be the first and most visible thing you’ll see. Performance and pounds shown by a heavy calf crop. Most of your Gelbvieh or Balancer bulls will produce a heavier calf crop than any Angus or Hereford bulls. That’s what most producers see. They see that first, and then if they’ve got a replacement program within their own herd, it doesn’t take them but one round of females to see how good of mothers they are, how well they milk, and how long they stay in production thanks to the breed’s longevity. When you keep Gelbvieh and Balancer replacement heifers and mix in a little bit of Brahman influence, it makes the results even better. The breed’s feet and structural traits also stand out to producers. The landscape down here constantly goes from being muddy and wet, to hard as a rock during drought. In any one year, cattle have to be able to traverse over both extremes and hold up well whether it’s hot and humid or cold and wet. These cattle are structurally correct with good feet and have been proven to handle these conditions well.
HOW DID YOU DEVELOP YOUR BULL LEASING BUSINESS AND HOW HAS IT GROWN? We were in the expansion phase of the cow cycle and everyone wanted to buy
heifers, but no one wanted to buy and maintain a heifer bull they’d use once. That’s exactly how the lease program started, back in 2014. At this time, I was still leasing around 180 roping steers for some ‘diversification’ on my operation. When customers began asking if they could lease bulls rather than purchase them, I saw an opportunity to apply a business model I already understood and was familiar with, thanks to my experience leasing roping steers. I eventually got out of leasing roping steers, and the bull leasing program took off. It started with the demand for heifer bulls, then producers started reaching out asking about cow bulls once they found out how cost effective it was to lease a quality bull for 60-90 days rather than spending a large sum for a bull they’d have to maintain year-round. That part of the business has just exploded, especially in the past couple of years with the increase in bull prices. When we first started, we leased 25-30 bulls a season, now we do around 100 bulls a season. I’ve branched out far, and I’ve never done any advertising at all. I never thought I wanted to have this many bulls to offer, but the demand is there. My saying is water runs downhill, and that’s where the water’s running, so that’s where I’m going to go. I’ve leased bulls as far as the Missouri line, East Texas, and central Oklahoma this year alone.
WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR WHEN SELECTING HERD SIRES? If I’m buying bulls for folks or for my leasing program, I want to be at breed average or better on most, if not all the traits. There’s probably a few that I’m not as concerned about as others, but that’s my goal. Unless I’m going totally performance on a full-grown cow herd, only then will I not even consider birth weight or calving ease. In this region, these cows stay in a little less condition than most other regions. Because of this, we don’t tend to have any calving trouble even out of the worst calving ease or birthweight EPD bulls on mature cow herds. Weaning weight, yearling weight, and total maternal EPDs and the performance indexes are what I look for a bull to be above breed average. And personally, I don’t want a bull that’s extremely strong in one trait and terrible in another. To me, balance is more important than the extremes. Regarding phenotype, producers in this area like a medium to large frame bull, with a lot of bone and thickness, and good feet and legs to live here. The disposition also needs to be good, because we handle the bulls often. Every time the bulls come back from a 60-90 day lease, we run them back through the chute for semen testing and testing for trichomoniasis.
WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN FROM GELBVIEH CATTLE, SPECIFICALLY IN YOUR SOUTHERN ENVIRONMENT? The summers here are tough. It’s been really bad this year, but it’s always tough with the heat and the humidity. The breeding season for a spring calf crop in this part of the country continues through August during the hottest part of the year – that’s tough. The red cattle don’t have any problems whatsoever, they don’t seem to struggle like the black cattle do. NOV/DEC 2026 | 25
cross these bulls on a quarter- or half-blood Brahman cow and keep the replacement female, you wouldn’t even know there was an issue at all with the heat and southern climate.
I do watch to make sure the cattle are slick haired. If cattle are black and slick haired, I have the opportunity to adapt them in the fall, use them in a lease program through the winter, and by the next spring they are well enough adapted they don’t suffer at all that summer. I can easily take a Seedstock Plus Balancer bull developed in Missouri, bring him to southern Arkansas and adapt him within six months to the climate. Once you
I do tend to struggle with virgin bulls that I buy in the spring to lease that summer. Sometimes they struggle, but once they get adapted that first year, they are good for the rest of their tenure.
WHAT ARE SOME GOALS AND ASPIRATIONS FOR YOUR OPERATION MOVING FORWARD? At my age, I’m finally to a place that I’m comfortable with. I spent around 20 years running the roads, buying cattle, and being gone all the time. I’ve been
a day hand cowboy. I’ve been a custom preg checker. I’ve stocked calves, trucked cattle, and leased roping steers. I’ve done everything you could do. I’m getting to the point now where I like being here and hanging around home, running the bull leasing program and working with customers. I’m not in love with the cow herd, but my theory is that the cow herd has made me more money in the last couple of years, and I think it will continue to do so for the next couple of years, that I won’t phase out of anything just yet. I’ve always sold cattle and would like to continue doing so with the customers I have built relationships with over the decades as long as I am able. Sometimes I don’t feel like I’m as much in the cattle business as I am in the people business. I enjoy what I do, and as long as I can keep it manageable, I’m going to stick with it.F

AGA Board of Directors Candidates
Greg “Bubba, Anderson It has been an honor to serve on the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Board of Directors for the past three years, and I am excited about the opportunity to run for a second term on the AGA Board of Directors. For those that don’t know me, I live in Marion, North Carolina, and am a fourth-generation cattle farmer on our family farm. In 1990, we had our first
Gelbvieh calf and have been committed to the Gelbvieh breed ever since. I am a big supporter of the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) as I have seen firsthand all it has done for my daughter, Molly and all the youth that participate in the junior program. Currently along with Todd Hodges, I operate Locust Hill Cattle Company, a 300+ head herd of Gelbvieh, Angus, and Balancer® cattle. Besides the AGJA Junior Classic and State Fair, we exhibit our cattle in Kansas City, Louisville, Oklahoma City and Denver.
Troy Forbes
NORTH CAROLINA Over the past three years on the board, we have hired Harold Bertz, an excellent AGA Executive Director, allocated the funds to add Wess Anglin, AGA Commercial Marketing Specialist, and increased the advertising budget, all while working within the budget. But the work Is not finished, we need to continue to push the advantages of the Gelbvieh female, grow market share, and increase the Gelbvieh herd registry. I also want to work to increase the scholarship funds for our junior members. I look forward to seeing you in Denver and would appreciate your vote as I work to help grow this great breed.
SOUTH DAKOTA
First of all, what an honor it is to be asked to run for a second term on the AGA Board of Directors. I am proud of what we’ve accomplished over the last three years and would be honored to serve another three.

In addition to our ranching operation, I sell beef semen for Genex and Beef 360, as well as provide nitrogen service to a large part of eastern South Dakota. My children, Wyatt, Cody, and Jaycie, are all active in our operation and have each served on the AGJA Board of Directors. Because of the impact the AGJA has had on my kids, I continue to be a strong advocate for this great youth organization.
a spade, and I try to bring that same approach to my role as a board member. I truly believe our current board brings a very diverse set of skills and experiences to the table and has done an excellent job of keeping the best interests of the association first and foremost in its decisions. If reelected to the board, I will continue to push breed promotion and will always be willing to listen to any and all concerns from our membership, no matter how big or small. I am committed to doing what I can to help strengthen our association and promote the breed we all believe in. Thank you for your consideration.

Jared Nowack I am Jared Nowack of Owensville, Missouri, where I own and operate Nowack Cattle Company with my wife, Caisie; our daughters, Brooke and Cam; my parents, Gib and Debbie; and my son-in-law, Levi Perry. My family has been involved in the seedstock business since 1948, and in 1991, we began raising and showing Gelbvieh cattle. What began as a new direction for our operation quickly became an important part of our family’s life. For more than three decades, Gelbvieh cattle have allowed us to grow our program, travel across the country, and build lifelong friendships with people we are proud to consider part of our Gelbvieh family. I have had the opportunity to serve the breed in several capacities, beginning as a
MISSOURI
director on the AGJA Board of Directors. I have since served multiple terms on the Heart of America Gelbvieh Association (HAGA) Board of Directors, where I currently serve as president. I have also been involved in organizing the HAGA Breeder’s Futurity & Elite Showcase Sale, currently serve as an advisor to the Heart of America Gelbvieh Junior Association (HAGJA), and have served for several years on the AGA National Show Committee. These experiences have given me the opportunity to work with breeders from a variety of backgrounds and gain a greater understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing our association.
banners they have earned, but we place even greater value on what those cattle accomplish after they leave the show ring. Seeing them develop into productive cows, influential donors, and A.I. sires through consignment sales and private treaty is ultimately how we measure the success of our program. Those relationships have reinforced my belief that the future of our breed depends not only on producing quality cattle, but also on understanding what our customers need and continuing to demonstrate the value Gelbvieh genetics can bring to the commercial cattleman to expand our presence within the beef industry.
At Nowack Cattle Company, our goal has always been to produce cattle that are functional first – cattle that are sound, productive, and capable of working in a variety of operations. We utilize an extensive A.I. and E.T. program and have been fortunate to raise cattle that have been successful at the local, state, and national levels. We are proud of the
The Gelbvieh breed has given my family countless opportunities, experiences, and lifelong friendships over the past three decades, I would greatly appreciate your vote and the opportunity to serve on the AGA Board of Directors. It would be an honor to give back to the association that has provided so much for me and my family by serving in this new role.
Justin Taubenheim I am honored and humbled to be nominated to serve a second term on AGA Board of Directors. I grew up in the Gelbvieh breed, attending every AGJA Junior Classic I could and serving on the AGJA Board of Directors for two terms. As some may know, I met my wife Janelle at a Gelbvieh event, and we still share the same passion for Gelbvieh cattle and the beef industry. Today we have four children – Turner (10), Callaway (9), Haven (6), and Heston (3). We have already attended two AGJA Junior Classics as a family, and my hope and dream is my children will be deeply rooted in the Gelbvieh breed as well. It’s a privilege for my experience in the

Gelbvieh breed to come full circle with this opportunity to serve a second term on the AGA Board of Directors. My parents and grandparents bought their first Gelbvieh cattle in the early 1980s, and demand for their genetics quickly led to the growth of our herd and the start of an annual production sale. Today, my dad, Mike, my brother, Tanner, and I, along with our wives own and operate Taubenheim Gelbvieh. It truly is a family affair with all hands-on deck every day. We run 550 head or registered Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle along with an additional 150 head of commercial cattle. Our operation is multifaceted. Each spring we promote and sell 125 performance tested bulls along with 50 bred females. Then in the summer we sell 300 head of feedlot cattle that we collect carcass
data on, and in turn use for genetic selection in our herd. It’s my desire to run for the AGA Board or Directors so I can better serve our breed and the beef industry as a whole. My experience in the industry will offer a well-rounded perspective and fresh ideas to the board. I am dedicated to giving back to the breed that has given so much to my family and I. The Gelbvieh breed has opened so many doors for me in my 35 years of life, and I wish to keep that ball rolling for other families. Finally, I want to say thank you for considering me to serve a second term. I would greatly appreciate your vote and would consider it a high honor to serve another term on the AGA Board of Directors.
Dan Warner I am Dan Warner from Arapahoe, Nebraska. My wife, Kate and I, along with my family operate Warner Beef Genetics. We currently run approximately 900 commercial and registered Balancer females and market 130 bulls and over 300 females annually.

We have four children, Gentry, who is a senior at Kansas State University, Berkley, who is in her first year of pharmacy school at Creighton University, Kallan who is a freshman at Arapahoe High School, and Creyton is 10 years old. Each one of our children is active in the operation and has all shown at an AGJA Junior Classic. I am a product of our outstanding junior program, it shaped me as a person, as a breeder and later-on as a parent,
nearly 30 plus years ago. The knowledge and experiences that I have obtained because of this breed drive my passion for Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle. I have served on the board before and truly believe that the best days for our cattle are yet to come. We fit the needs of the industry perfectly in the current state. Thank you for consideration and your support of this great breed of cattle.
Sydney Wilkinson C O L O R A D O My name is Sydney Wilkinson, and I am a lifelong Gelbvieh breeder, cattle producer, and agricultural educator from Model, Colorado. I serve as the Colorado State University Extension Specialist for Las Animas County, where my work focuses on agriculture and 4-H youth development. While extension is my profession, cattle remain my passion. I live on my family’s ranch and am actively involved in our operation while also maintaining a cow herd of my own. My involvement with the Gelbvieh breed began long before I could appreciate what it would to mean in my life. I was raised on Wilkinson Gelbvieh Ranch, where my family has been raising Gelbvieh cattle since the 1980s. Growing up in the breed shaped not only my understanding of the cattle industry, but also many of the values that guide me today. The relationships, opportunities, and experiences I gained through the Gelbvieh community has a tremendous impact on my personal and professional development. As a member of the AGJA, I had the opportunity to serve on the AGJA Board of Directors and as the AGJA
Ambassador. Those experiences helped develop my leadership skills, introduced me to lifelong friends, and instilled in me a desire to give back to the breed that has given so much to me. Today, I continue that involvement through service on the AGA Breed Improvement Committee and the American Gelbvieh Foundation. I previously served on the AGA National Show Committee. Our family’s breeding philosophy has always centered on functionality. Running cattle across large, rugged pastures in southeastern Colorado requires cows that are productive, efficient, structurally sound, and built to thrive in challenging environments. To us, however, functionality extends beyond the pasture. We believe cattle must create value throughout the entire beef supply chain, from the commercial cowherd to the feedyard and ultimately to the rail. Producing cattle that work for both seedstock and commercial producers remains a primary focus of our program. My educational background reflects that passion for both cattle and genetics. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science and a Master of Science in Animal Breeding and Genetics from Texas A&M University, followed by an Educational Doctorate from Texas Tech University. These experiences strengthened my appreciation for the role that science, data, and research play in helping producers
make informed decisions and improve profitability. I am seeking a position on the AGA Board of Directors because I care deeply about the future of the Gelbvieh breed. I believe we have an incredible story to tell and tremendous opportunities ahead. Throughout my career and involvement in the beef industry, I have seen firsthand the value Gelbvieh genetics bring to commercial producers through maternal strength, efficiency, longevity, and overall profitability. I want to help increase awareness of those strengths and continue expanding the breed’s influence within the broader cattle industry. I am also passionate about the future of genetic evaluation, research, and breed improvement. As our industry evolves, I believe it is critical that we continue investing in science-based tools that help producers make better decisions while ensuring our breed remains relevant and competitive. At the same time, I believe we must never lose sight of the commercial cattleman and the practical value our cattle deliver in real-world production systems. The Gelbvieh breed has given me opportunities, friendships, and experiences that have helped shape who I am today. Serving on the AGA Board of Directors would be an opportunity to give back to a breed I care deeply about while helping position it for continued success in the future. NOV/DEC 2026 | 33
