EVIEW FROM THE BOARD THE SHIP IS STEADY AND READY TO LAUNCH

arly January brought together Gelbvieh and Balancer® enthusiasts at two great events. The quality of cattle at the 2024 Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City and the National Western Stock Show in Denver were top notch. Thank you to all of the exhibitors and breeders who take the time to get cattle ready and make the trip to these events. It is a lot of expense and time committed but your efforts are one more path to help promote Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle to a broader audience.

Early January also brought about change at the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) office. Megan Slater after nearly 10 years of working for the AGA took a new position with Nutrien Ag in Loveland, Colorado. Megan started at the AGA office as an intern and then moved into a full-time position. She served in many roles at the association before being named Executive Director. During her time as Executive Director, Megan got the financial house in order and continued to present balanced budgets during her entire tenure. She also did a heavy lift with the Rules and Bylaws committee to update the AGA Rules and Bylaws, as well as started the process with the American Gelbvieh Foundation. We thank Megan for her continued dedication right to the end. Not every Executive Director during their last week of work would still attend and work at the National Show, but honestly that was just Megan Slater’s style. We wish her all the best on her next endeavors.

As I write this column, a three-member search committee and the AGA Executive Committee have completed initial Zoom interviews with candidates. We are working to narrow the field for in-person interviews with the full AGA Board of Directors. We know that this hire is exceptionally important to drive

the future of the breed. We are looking at candidates that have solid experience in the seedstock and commercial industries, as well as the people skills to help communicate the message of Gelbvieh and Balancer to a broader audience. I told the committee we need to look for the evangelist that can preach the Gelbvieh and Balancer advantages.

Our remaining staff has pulled together to take on additional duties during the interim as we conduct the search for the next Executive Director. We have a really solid staff and they are truly committed to serving our members. Please be patient with them if they don’t know the answer to a question immediately; they are likely confirming an answer to make sure they are giving you the right response.

At the AGA Convention we said farewell to Jake Renner as the Member and Youth Activities Coordinator. Megan didn’t know she would have an opportunity too good to resist when she posted the job the week after the convention. We were very fortunate to have several strong candidates for the position and interviews were completed before Christmas by Megan and the rest of the AGA staff. The position was offered to and accepted by Tawnie DeJong. Tawnie is a western South Dakota cattle gal that came to us by way of the University of Missouri. Tawnie served as the livestock judging coach for Mizzou and also coordinated the 4-H livestock shows at the Missouri State Fair.

Tawnie hit the ground running on January 22 and is already proving herself as an invaluable resource for our AGJA board of directors and the Oklahoma planning committee for this summer’s junior national. Tawnie will attend a few breeder bull sales this spring, so if you run across her at an event introduce yourself and say hi. She has a

deep background in the cattle industry and is excited to serve the Gelbvieh membership.

While it may seem the ship doesn’t have a captain, rest assured it is steady as she goes right now. I’m lending guidance where I can and we are fortunate to have the right people in place to keep moving forward. I hope in my next column we have a new Executive Director to announce but again we want to find the right person not just rush through the process.

Remember to have a little patience, take a deep breath and please say thank you to our staff. They are the glue that hold us together.F

4 | GELBVIEH WORLD

The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) is pleased to announce the addition of Tawnie DeJong to the AGA staff as the Member and Youth Activities Coordinator. In her role, DeJong will serve as the staff advisor to the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) board of directors and members, coordinate all junior activities, help plan the AGA National Show, and assist Gelbvieh members and customers with the AGA Online Registry.

“Tawnie comes from a strong livestock background and understands the cattle industry,” said Lori Maude, President of the AGA board of directors. “We are excited to have someone with Tawnie’s experience and talent join the staff to lead our junior programs and work with our members.”

DeJong grew up on a beef cattle ranch in South Dakota where her family raised club calves with primarily Maine Anjou genetics. Growing up, she was extremely active in both 4-H and FFA with her four younger siblings. She studied animal science at South Dakota State University where she was a member of the livestock judging team.

Following college, DeJong worked for a year as a graphic designer and sale barn consultant for an ag newspaper and two years as a recruiter for a community college in Wyoming. She returned to school for a master’s degree in animal

science with a focus in viral epidemiology at Michigan State University where she served as the assistant and then the head coach of the livestock judging team.

Following graduate school, she served as the head livestock judging coach and an animal science instructor at the University of Missouri, coaching seven teams in total. DeJong also served as the 4-H Livestock Superintendent for the Missouri State Fair. She enjoys judging and officiating livestock shows and has been fortunate enough to evaluate livestock at events in 20 states.

In her free time, DeJong enjoys providing opportunities for youth to find success in the sport of livestock judging, spending time with her Welsh Corgi, Luna, and playing cards and board games with her friends and family.

“I’ve always enjoyed working with young people and families in the livestock

industry and am extremely excited to continue to help develop the next generation of livestock leaders through the AGJA,” said DeJong.

DeJong began her role with the AGA on January 22 and can be reached at tawnie@ gelbvieh.org or at the AGA office at 303465-2333. F

2024 HERD ASSESSMENTS AVAILABLE NOW

2024 Herd Assessments are now available for completion on the AGA Online Registry Service. As a reminder, the annual herd assessment process is not automatically completed by AGA’s registry system. Members must log onto the AGA Online Registry Service and fully complete a herd assessment for females in their herd. 2024 Herd Assessments are due March 15. View a written guide to completing herd assessments online at gelbvieh.org

INTERNATIONAL LETTER FOR 2024 IS ‘M’

The international letter code for 2024 is ‘M’. All animals within the AGA registry must be assigned a tattoo at registration that contains the proper international letter code. Beginning with calves born in 2018 and later, members can choose the permanent form of identification for that animal however, a tattoo must still be denoted at the time of calf registration for record-keeping purposes. Accepted forms of permanent identification with the AGA are tattoo, EID and freeze brand. The permanent form of identification denoted in the registry should be permanently affixed to the animal. International codes can be found on the AGA Online Registry Service along the left side of your screen.

EJUNIOR CONNECTION MANY MILES AND MEMORIES

xhausted would be the best way to describe how I felt after attending both the Cattlemen’s Congress and National Western Stock Show backto-back. But all the late nights and early mornings made it worth it. I always enjoy attending national shows because it gives me the opportunity to compete against high caliber Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle and a chance to network with breeders from across the country. I cherish the lessons that young producers like me take away from each of these events.

The fourth annual Cattlemen’s Congress took place December 28, 2023, to January 2, 2024. Once again, this event was a huge success for our breed. Our National Show and Sale and bull futurities were all excellent and did a great job of showcasing our breed. As breeders we should be proud of the quality of livestock that was exhibited. Congratulations

to all the exhibitors and consignors and this year’s national event. A huge congratulations to Butler Creek Farms and Braylen Schaeffer on exhibiting the fifth overall female in the Open Supreme Female Show!

Junior members from all over the country sold tickets for our annual donation heifer fundraiser bringing in over $25,000 which makes for one of our most successful years. All proceeds benefit AGJA programs, events and activities fostering industry education, growth, and leadership. This year’s female was graciously donated by Warner Beef Genetics of Arapahoe, Nebraska. Thank you to Dan and Kate Warner and the rest of their family for the donation of this exceptional female and for always being huge supporters of the junior program. I would also like to thank everyone who

purchased tickets. Each one of you play a vital role in the success of our program.

As Cattlemen’s Congress wrapped up, I headed to the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado. This was my first chance to ever spend time in the yards. For me this was an eye-opening experience and an opportunity to watch commercial cattlemen and fellow seedstock producers connect over their love of and interest in Gelbvieh cattle. While each event is different in the opportunities they present, they both create a chance to promote the Gelbvieh and Balancer breed.

No matter your preference, anytime that we as producers can get together to talk, laugh and bond over our mutual love of the breed is a good thing. I encourage everyone to mark their calendars for any industry events whether it be a cattle show, convention, or a sale.F

SREGISTRY TIPS N’ TRICKS COMPLETE FEMALE RECORDS TO PREPARE FOR SUCCESS

uccess depends upon previous preparation. Completing female records now prepares you for success when it comes time to submit your calf data to the AGA Online Registry Service. This starts with administering herd assessments on your females who are 13 months of age or older and disposing of the females you won’t be registering progeny out of for the year. The herd assessment annual fee of $30 per head acts as a one-rate fee that provides the opportunity for members to administer records on the female’s calf including recording and transfers. Both actions are available through the AGA Online Registry Service. Members are strongly encouraged to complete herd assessments prior to the March 15 deadline to avoid late fees.

ACCESSING YOUR HERD ASSESSMENTS:

The following instructions are also available in a print-ready PDF found by scrolling to the bottom of the Animal Registration Resources page located under the Registry tab at gelbvieh.org. You’ll want to log into your account to locate and select “Herd Mgmt” on the left-hand side of your screen. From the drop-down menu provided select “Inventory”. Once in the inventory, you will have access to all the females currently listed as active under your ownership along with any others that may be associated with your account if you are listed as the cooperator ID for another herd.

You’ll notice a variety of tabs listed horizontally at the top of the following screen. It’s important to recognize the difference between these tabs so you know which females are listed under each.

HEIFERS:

As you view the list of females under the “Assessment Age” tab, you will notice a variety of options available to update the records of all currently active females including placing the assessment, disposing of cull cows and recording exposure data to sires for the 2024 calf crop.

Tabs showing “Assessed”, followed by a year (2023, 2022, 2021, etc.) signify females that have already been assessed for the year listed.

The tab reading “Assessment Age” designates females that need to be assessed for the current year. If a female is missing a herd assessment for any reason from a previous year, you must contact the AGA to place the proper records on the female(s).

COMPLETING HERD ASSESSMENTS AND CULLING COWS/

To place the herd assessment on females that are forecasted as dams of 2024 calves to be registered, simply click the 2024 button found to the left of each female’s details under the “Assess For” column. If you do not have any females to dispose of and wish to complete the 2024 herd assessments for all females listed under the “Assessment Age” tab, click the “Complete Yearly HAS Process-Assess all for 2024” button found in the top right corner of the screen. You will be asked if you are sure you want to assess all females. By selecting to continue and move forward you are agreeing to pay the associated fee of $30 (if processed before March 15) for each female listed on the “Assessment Age” tab at that time.

To dispose of a female, click on the small grey icon to the right of the female that looks like a trash can. Using the dropdown menu provided, select the disposal code/reason that best describes why this specific female is no longer in your herd. Be sure to select the green checkmark to lock in your disposal code. It is important to remember that disposal of a cow due to transfer into your commercial herd in an attempt to avoid registering a calf for that year is

discouraged. If the female moves from the registered inventory to the commercial herd in one year and is asked to be placed back into the active inventory to register a calf in a following year, she will be required to pay for the years she was not active per the AGA rules in keeping consistent records on all animals as part of practicing Total Herd Reporting (THR). To keep our data as honest and accurate as possible, please record all calves born throughout the year. The use of disposal codes is fundamental to the practicality and complete process of THR lending itself as a resource that the producer can utilize for future years. Disposal codes are utilized throughout the year, not just during herd assessment “season” and should be used properly regardless of when they are placed on an animal’s records.

TO RECORD EXPOSURE DATA:

While not mandatory, recording exposure data on females can be beneficial for multiple reasons including the convenience of recording the sire’s registration number and dates associated with sire exposure at the same time as the herd assessment, as well as eliminating the need to enter the sire’s registration number when you are ready to register the 2024 calves.

If you need to request a printed herd assessment form, please contact the office at your earliest convenience to allow time for those forms to be printed, mailed, completed and returned before the March 15, 2024, deadline to avoid late fees.

As always, if you ever run into problems or have questions, please contact the AGA office at 303-465-2333 or email registry@ gelbveh.org. We are happy to help!F

If the female was pasture exposed to a sire, you’ll select the PE button and enter the bull’s registration number along with the date the bull was put in with those females as well as the date he was removed. Be sure to select the green check mark to the right of those details after entering. If you accidentally select PE and need to return to the main screen to dispose of or select AI simply click the red “X” button to the right.

If the female was artificially inseminated, you’ll want to select the AI button to the right of the female’s details and enter the sire’s registration number along with the date the female was bred.

The AGA established the Ring of Gold program to honor the top animals shown at the conclusion of the show year. Points are earned for grand and reserve champions, as well as division champions and reserves, and are based on the actual number of animals shown at each show per division.

Animals must earn points in at least two shows to qualify for Ring of Gold points each year. The 2023-2024 Ring of Gold qualified shows in either the Gelbvieh, Balancer or both divisions were: Mississippi State Fair, Missouri State Fair, American Royal, and Cattlemen’s

The 27th Annual Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity was held on December 31, 2023, in conjunction with the Cattlemen’s Congress held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
