BREEDING SEASON GUARANTEE Buyers of all bulls selling for $3,000. or more that are injured during the first breeding season, will have a credit at the next Lone Oak bull sale, at the value of the purchase price minus the salvage value. Contact us promptly so the decision to return the bull to us, or to sell the bull for salvage, may be made. A breeding season being defined as a 90 day period following the first turn-out of the bull.

FEEDING AND CARE OF BULLS Lone Oak Cattle would like to take this opportunity to extend a huge “THANK YOU” to Terry Chapman and the students in the beef program at Kirkwood Community College. The yearling bulls arrived at Kirkwood in early October and have been fed together in one pen.

Bulls were fed for an average daily gain of three pounds. Weights were taken approximately 30 days apart throughout the feeding period.

Thank you, once again, to the Kirkwood crew for the feeding, care and preparation of the bulls.

Cattlemen & Cattlewomen, Our family would like to welcome you and your family to our Seventh Annual Production Sale. Thank you to all who have supported us and allow us to continue to live our PASSION! It is truly a joy each day to be working with, and surrounded by, those you love. Two of our boys, Cole and Cody, and their wives Nicole and Emily, are currently working with us as well. In early October, the whole family got together to celebrate Mom and Dad’s 50th Wedding Anniversary. What a blessing!!! That same evening, Emily and Cody announced that there will be a new little Ehresman in May! Wow! We are all so excited!

2018 brought many challenges and character-building opportunities to the Midwest. The hybrids (both corn and cattle), amaze us as they continue to produce above our expectations. The consistency of the bulls continues to increase, as we strive to produce a product that is relevant to the industry today. While our strong maternal focus continues to guide our program into the future!

One of the most rewarding parts of the business for me, is when a customer calls and is ready to sell their calves. We try to make it a point to bid on/buy your calves if we can. It’s fun to see the pride that each individual takes in the product they’ve produced. You all are doing a great job! Cattle are so much better than they were a few years ago! Keep up the good work.

The offering this year will sell in a typical auction format. Please register for a buyer number upon arrival and pick up a sale order and supplement sheet with ultrasound information. Video monitors will be set up, and videos will play while animals sell. Live lots will be penned outside for viewing prior to the sale. Videos of the bulls will be available approximately two weeks prior to sale day at loneoakcattleiowa.com.

Lots 56-69 are open spring females right out of the heart of our herd. This year for the second time, we are offering a few for your appraisal. They were all raised right here, both from AI and our natural service sires. They will be offered for sale in small groups, and the buyer will have the option to load these up and haul them home on sale day or leave them here with us to be cared for and bred. If the buyer chooses to leave them, after settlement, they will be turned back in with our own, synchronized, and AI’d around May 20th and pasture exposed to our proven calving ease bulls for 65 days. Generally, at least 60% of the females will settle AI. In the event that a heifer fails to conceive, Lone Oak Cattle will refund the purchase price of that female. DAM OF MERIT: Great bulls come from great cows!

Rapid changes in genomics and EPDs make bull selection more challenging all the time. Structural soundness, however, is a trait that should always be priority one. We select only the top 30% of our bull crop to become breeding bulls based on birthweight, conformation, disposition, and overall performance. The sale bulls will all be from solid, good uddered, hardworking cows. Each year the AGA recognizes programs with cows performing at the highest level. To become a Dam of Merit a cow must wean at least three calves with a weaning weight ratio of at least 101, all within a 365 day window, without falling behind. To become a Dam of Distinction she must do this 8 times! We are blessed to currently have 33 Dams of Merit and 3 Dams of Distinction residing here.

Numerous research studies have reported up to a 25 percent improvement in pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed when crossbred dams produce crossbred calves. There are three main types of heterosis: Individual heterosis is the improvement in performance by the individual crossbred animal above the average of its parents.

Increased weaning weight, yearling weight and carcass traits are examples of individual heterosis in crossbred compared to straightbred calves.

Maternal heterosis leads to the combined improvement in traits from the dam that cause increases in the performance of her and of her progeny. Examples of maternal heterosis in a beef cow include: younger age at puberty, increased calving

rate, increased survival of her calf to weaning, longevity, and pounds of calf produced in her lifetime.

Paternal heterosis is the improvement in productive and reproductive characteristics of the bull. Examples of paternal heterosis in a herd sire include: reduced age at puberty, increased in scrotal circumference, higher sperm concentration, increased pregnancy rate and greater servicing capacity.

The greatest benefits of a crossbreeding program are through direct, maternal heterosis with a crossbreed cow – increased fertility, better calf survivability, heavier weaning weights, and greater cow longevity. “Crossbred females are 30 percent more productive over their lifetimes,” said Dr. Larry Cundiff, Meat Animal Research Center (MARC), Clay Center, Neb. A planned crossbreeding program can add more than $1,000 over the life of a crossbred cow.

MARC studies have proven crossbred cows reduce breakeven production costs by as much as 10 percent. Other research shows the average crossbred female remains in the herd about two years longer.

Many crossbreeding systems are complicated. It takes multiple pastures and intense management to get the most value out of some crossbreeding systems. The American Gelbvieh Association’s SmartCross® system is different. With the SmartCross system, a Gelbvieh or Balancer bull can be used on any cow herd base to get you to the profit center of the beef industry in one mating.

FEEDER PROFIT INDEX (FPI) = An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on grade and yield. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as stay-ability and calving ease.
