TRANSPORTATION

TRUCKING

Commercial air service is available into Bismarck, ND and from Aberdeen and Pierre, SD. Each are approximately 85 miles from the ranch. Rental cars are available at these locations. Private planes may land on a 4,400-foot, hard surface runway at Mobridge. Call us at 605-649-6262 for a ride to the sale site.

BREEDER’S GUARANTEE Bulls are guaranteed for everything (death, injury, dissatisfaction) for the first breeding season. If not satisfied, half of the purchase price (less salvage value) will go towards credit in a future sale.

Bulls will be 100% fertility guaranteed the first year. In no event shall the seller be responsible for more than the purchase price of the bull.

Sale terms and conditions will be the same as those that are recommended by the American Gelbvieh Association. Every precaution will be exercised for the safety and welfare of those attending the sale. However, all persons attending the sale do so at their own risk. Lazy TV Ranch assumes no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents which may occur.

REGISTRATION PAPERS

Cattle are trucked free anywhere in the continental U.S. or the nearest Canadian Port of Entry when 10 or more bulls are purchased or a total of $25,000 is spent by one buyer. If you purchase less than 10 head or spend less than $25,000, we guarantee the trucking cost will not exceed $300/head anywhere in the continental U.S. The bulls are trucked at no charge for the first 250 miles.

Option 1 - If you haul your own bull home sale day, deduct $100 per bull.

Option 2 - We will deliver your bull within the next 2-3 weeks.

Option 3 - We will feed your bull at your risk until May 1 at which time you will will need to pick him up.

The sale will begin at 1 pm with Balancer and Gelbvieh bulls. The Angus bulls will start at approximately 2 pm.

BUYER ATTENDANCE INCENTIVE Sale buyers who are in attendance March 2 will be given a Carhartt jacket.

HEALTH Cattle will be eligible for interstate shipment with all the necessary health papers furnished. Bulls selling outside the country may need to have further testing coordinated after the sale. We practice a Zoetis calfhood vaccination program. Dams of all the bulls in the sale have tested negative for Johne’s disease on an annual basis.

SEMEN TESTING All of the bulls have had a breeding soundness evaluation (including semen test) prior to the sale. You may want to re-test the bulls at turnout, but all the bulls selling passed a semen test on Feb. 8.

YARDAGE Bulls will be kept free of charge, in lieu of free shipping, at the buyer’s risk for 45 days. We recommend purchasing mortality insurance if they are left for us to deliver.

Greetings Cattle Enthusiasts, Lazy TV Ranch was blessed to enjoy a good 2018 ­— the rains came just in time and we had average or better crops and pastures. We have had a very nice fall, but now winter has set in and makes writing my letter seem like a good option for today.

We had some growing pains this past year as we added more cows, mostly Angus, and attempted different management practices. The one that really influenced this set of calves was mob grazing — grazing large numbers intensively on small pastures while regularly moving them. This worked very well for the ground and pastures, but not as well for the calves. Our weaning weights were down 75 lbs. at our north ranch so please pay attention to indexes and EPDs rather than actual performance data as it is a bit skewed on this offering.

A change that will be good for each of you is our addition of sale bulls from Rod Dikoff’s FX Ranch at Onaka, SD, and Heinje’s North Fork Gelbvieh Ranch from Wilmot, SD. Both are very progressive breeders who do a great job sourcing some of the best genetics available. We are selling just a few bulls from each ranch, and they will be fully guaranteed and warrantied the same as our own. All claims or problems will be directed to us. We are selling only the top animals off these ranches so it gives you, our buyers, more options and quality to select from.

The bulls were fed a high roughage ration that is properly balanced to ensure long useful life. We feed approximately a 48-megacal ration so the bulls have a chance to separate themselves according to rate of gain for the performance test. Where we differ from most other producers is that we feed a balanced ration made up of three different silage mixes: corn silage, oatage and pealage. We also use different types of hay as well as mineral and protein supplements, but no distillers grains. This balanced diet, along with plenty of exercise, should ensure a long useful life for the bulls... Time and again we get comments (especially on our Balancer bulls) from our customers getting 5 on up to 9 years of use. This makes our bulls a better value than those from some of our competitors who may post heavier actual weights, but the performance our bulls sire is equal or better along with increased longevity.

The bulls will be sold mostly in catalog order starting with Lot 1. We will sell only one-third of the black Balancers at the front of the sale and then conclude the sale with the rest. There will be a sale order, videos and carcass ultrasound data posted on our website approximately one week prior to the sale.

Lazy TV Ranch continues to rank 2nd in nation for elite dams Lazy TV Ranch consistently ranks high among Gelbvieh breeders for the number of Dams of Merit and Dams of Distinction bred and owned. In 2018, owning 16 Dams of Distinction and 80 Dams of Merit ranked us second in the nation for the third consecurive year.

Only 6.3% of the 37,429 Gelbvieh cows assessed in 2018 qualified for the Dam of Merit award and only 1% for the elite Dam of Distinction honor.

A dam of Merit must have produced at least three calves and a Dam of Distinction must have produced at least eight calves. In addition, the dams must meet the following qualifications: -Age at first calving must not exceed 25 months -Produced a calf born between January 1 of the prior year and March 1 of the current year -Possess a minumum average progeny WW ratio of 101 on all her calves -Maintain a regular calving interval

Understanding Feed Efficiency and Residual Feed Intake Feed is a major expense for cattle producers, second only to fixed costs. With 60-plus percent of the total feed cost used for maintenance in breeding cows, improving feed efficiency can have a big economic impact. A 5% improvement in feed efficiency could have an economic effect four times greater than a 5% improvement in ADG. What is residual Feed Intake? Residual Feed Intake (RFI) is defined as the difference between an animal’s actual feed intake and its expected feed requirements for maintenance and growth. RFI is the variation in feed intake that remains after the requirements for maintenance and growth have been met.

RFI is calclulated as the actual intake of the animal minus its expected intake. A negative RFI number of 2 (-2) would mean the animal consumed 2 lbs. less feed per day than the average of the group it was tested with (its contemporary group). Likewise, a positive 2 RFI value (+2) would mean that the animal consumed 2 lbs. more feed than the average animal did in the test group.

Efficient animals eat less than expected and have a negative or low RFI, while inefficient animals eat more than expected and have a positive or high RFI. Just like a golf score, you’re looking for the lowest number or the animals with negative RFI numbers.

How is Feed Efficiency Measured? The data required to measure RFI are individual animal intake, ADG and average on-test metabolic body weight. Animals are measured in a GrowSafe equipped station for a period of about 70 days. ADG and average body weight are both computed from body weight data of animals measured during the on-test period. ADG is computed as the change in body weight per day during the intake test period.

A GrowSafe feed intake system electronically monitors the feed bunk each second of the day recording all cattle feeding activity at the bunk. Data records cannot be changed or altered. Good or bad, GrowSafe numbers don’t lie. A GrowSafe System is an advanced data acquisition that:

--reads animal and non-animal activity at the bunk every second of the day.

--reads an EID (animal RFID ear tag) every second when an animal is consuming feed.

--identifies when feed is consumed and a tag is not recorded.

--records feed disappearance from the trough load cells every second of the day.

--records substance appearance into the trough (feed, rain, snow).

--uses data auditing software to automatically and continuously to confirm whether the data is valid.
